Your GA nomination of Sheesh!

The article Sheesh! you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Sheesh! for comments about the article, and Talk:Sheesh!/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! Good article reassessment for Barry Bonds

Your sister's BLP article

I am sympathetic to your situation and will gladly help you with the COI problem if I can! I have experience with that. I am totally neutral and uninvolved regarding your sister's BLP draft article. I commented on the AN as I happened to be there looking at something else.

One small point: You said "@Honest social medias such as Instagram, LinkedIn or Facebook" in your comment at AN. I'm unsure what that means. I suggest avoiding WP:SOAPBOX if you're suggesting that Twitter is dishonest. I like Twitter. Don't alienate people who want to help you, unless my fondness for Twitter makes you consider my assistance unacceptable. It is possible that you meant something totally different with @Honest social medias. If so, please disregard this second paragraph. Let me know on my talk page if I can help with the BLP article. FeralOink (talk) 13:07, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

User:FeralOink, I completely missed this point. I'd love the assistance. I mostly use Instagram myself and know my sister was on IG stories. Her story was preserved here. I don't know if this was posted on Twitter.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:09, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
Hi Tony! Good to hear from you. I assisted COI editors with updating organization articles, so I know the process. For BLPs, I became more of a detector of undeclared COI editors (e.g. wives, graduate students, see Connected contributors list, husbands, close relatives) of article subjects! I am eager to help you, because you weren't surreptitious. Also, I'm a woman: I want to help you determine if your sister is appropriate for a WP BLP. I realize that an event that took place, and it would have been helpful for your sister's BLP to be approved in main space by Jan2023 month end. It's never too late! Tell me (here or my talk page) what the draft space or sandbox URL of the BLP that the drive-by editor submitted. I will have a look, see what I can do with it.
P.S. Re Twitter, I use it for professional contacts in banking and data security. Almost overnight, Elon went from a tech bro, Silicon Valley celebrity (revered for Tesla and SpaceX), to a bad guy of the New Right, NOT Alt-Right! Yet Fox News (Musk’s biz ties to China create unease in Washington for GOP and Dems) and left-wing tech blogs ("Free speech absolutist" Elon Musk’s ties to Chinese censorship) both suggest that he is looking out for himself. Twitter was losing $4 million per day for years; the former owners couldn't turn a profit, so whatever Elon does can't be worse! Sorry for going off topic. FeralOink (talk) 21:10, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
User:FeralOink, the current draft of the article is at Draft:Carla Vernón, I am having trouble using sources that I would ordinarily use because I think the perception is that as CEO my any press release was crafted by my sister. Then the camplaints are that everything traces back to my sister's press releases or her own quotes/voice.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:02, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Okay, Tony, I understand what you're saying. Press releases aren't good sources in general. However, articles written about her, that quote her, should be okay. I'll have a look and let you know in a few days.--FeralOink (talk) 06:15, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Tony, I haven't forgotten. Can you please obtain a photograph that is compliant with Commons (and/or en Wiki requirements) for the BLP? She is so pretty and chic! Also, it is consistent with WP:MOS to include a pic for a BLP. I found many pics online but none for which the licensing was appropriate. You were 100% correct, about the many Internet announcements of her recent professional appointment as CEO of a NASDAQ-listed company, all of which are essentially just copy-and-pastes of the original press release. HOWEVER, I found many WP:RS and WP:NPOV sources (primary AND secondary) that chronicle her history of accomplishment and recognition. I re-wrote the article on The Honest Company as a start, realizing that she only joined recently. Wikipedia has a tendency to consider mediocre tech bros, insignificant academics, women of minimal talent in the fine arts, and various professionals with weird quirks as BLP-worthy. Yet Wikipedia rarely includes people like your sister, who is Ivy-League educated, has a record of ascending accomplishment in a traditional career path while praised and recognized by her peers, and is compensated as deserved (if we had a genuine meritocracy). I will work on your sister's BLP draft tomorrow and/or Saturday.--FeralOink (talk) 01:51, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
User:FeralOink, I believe that I will be seeing my sister next week. I will try to get a pic. Thanks for the encouragement. Can we move further talk to her talk page.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:25, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
Tony, I finished my work on Carla's BLP and submitted it for review via Afc. I left a detailed note for you on the talk page. Your sister is amazing! I hope she is very happy in her role as CEO. She is definitely notable for a Wikipedia BLP!--FeralOink (talk) 07:33, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

WikiCup 2023 July newsletter

The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Contestants achieved 11 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 47 good articles, 72 featured or good article reviews, over 100 DYKs and 40 ITN appearances. As always, any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 (talk) and Cwmhiraeth (talk). Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

You mentioned "previous judgment of editors"...it happens to be me that placed Crockett at VA5 under politicians and elsewhere, the logic being that he held a Congressional seat and was a purported 1836 presidential contender before getting himself killed in Texas (compare Bowie, who I don't believe ever held elected office). This is YET another vindication that politicians, military, activists and jurists need to be a single section (I proposed this at VA3 but nobody seems to understand what I'm saying). If you would like to move Crockett to activists or military leaders, I wouldn't stop you

On a related note, there's a hatchet job going on with removal proposals of American politicians, orchestrated by a couple of fellas who dont seem to know much about American history and institutions. Recent American politicians was their first target and earlier American politicians is next. I fear Crockett may be one of their targets, and even Daniel Webster (one of the greatest American politicians and orators ever) may be a target. I hope I can count on your support to retain Crockett, Webster and others pbp 17:05, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

  • User:Purplebackpack89 I supported your big merger discussion at VA3 about 3-5. It is at 4-3 so it has a chance. Every so often there will be big hatchet jobs in some field unless we consider expanding the project gradually over time (I proposed in proportion to main space articles). I will probably get back to this next year. Sorry about the cities. It looks like about 8-10 are going down. I am thinking about proposing in multiple levels like I have done for the hurdle rate increase from 55%. Given we are at 6,750,940 articles 1% is 67,509, 0.9% is 60,758 and 0.75% 50,632. Numbers like 67,500, 60,000, would be numbers now 50,500. I figure I need to wait 6 months or a year before bringing it back around. Instability in the project comes from 1. nomination flow which causes variation with recentism and pop culture bias and 2. quota undulations which cause variation with biases of the power bases of the day at the project. We are going to try to improve the nomination flow with an increased hurdle and increased support minimums. I think if we could gradually expand in proportion to the encyclopedia size, we would not have to take a hatchet to various fields every so often to quell the demand for space from others. I'm watching how the hurdle rate nom goes, but I think we are headed to a good place for the project. At 1% or 0.9% you might be able to get those cities back.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 23:49, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Vital article top icon

Hello, TonyTheTiger! It's a shame that the proposal for a top icon has been getting so much opposes recently, it's probably due to the proposal being posted on the centralized discussions and as so it attracted many people who don't understand nor care about the Vital Articles WikiProject. I think it would be only fair to ping a few VA active users to try to counter-balance it. What do you think? The Blue Rider 20:35, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

User:The Blue Rider, There is not much we can do to counterbalance it. I think it is a project decision, like GA and FA did. There is an argument for centralized discussion. I just don't think we should have to if the other projects didn't.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 01:38, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
I think that would violate the Wikipedia:Canvassing guideline.
Tony, I dropped by about this comment, to say that the script at the top of m:User:WhatamIdoing/global.js might be useful to you. It turns timestamps into URLs that go straight to the specific comment. WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:37, 13 December 2023 (UTC
User:WhatamIdoing, I don't understand your point.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 01:40, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
No more canvassing than posting at the centralized discussions. The Blue Rider 08:20, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
The script lets you get a URL for an individual comment, which you can add as a link, so that you don't have to write something like "see my answer (time-stamped 13:13, 11 December 2023)". You can instead say "See my earlier comment". WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:46, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
User:WhatamIdoing Is this going to be a template or something in the future?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:44, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
It may become a default-on software feature in the future (part of the Discussion tools in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion). However, "the future" could be years from now. WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:17, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
@The Blue Rider, posting at WP:CENT is considered acceptable in terms of canvassing because anyone can be watching that page. Pinging individuals who support a particular viewpoint (e.g., "a few VA active users") is not considered acceptable because it's deliberately selecting people who are expected to vote in a particular way. A partisan Get out the vote effort is accepted in the real world (e.g., one can legitimately call all the neighbors and offer a free ride to the polling station to those who say they support your favorite candidate and to not make the same offer to those who support a different candidate), but it is not generally accepted here at the English Wikipedia. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:22, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
User:WhatamIdoing polling at their project is how GA and FA became top icons. Not sure about page protection.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:34, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
Precisely, people from CENT are excepted to vote in a particular way as much as VA users. The Blue Rider 21:33, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
Do you genuinely believe that editors you personally hand-pick from among the regular participants/supporters of WikiProject Vital Articles will have the same breadth of views about WP:VITAL as editors selected on, well, any other basis? WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:40, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, we already had people from VITAL opposing the proposal and I'm sure if you do the percentages between people from CENT and VITAL that support/opposed you will even perhaps get an higher percentage of people opposing from CENT than VITAL. The Blue Rider 10:32, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Sure. But I wasn't talking about people who have VITAL on their watchlist. I was talking about "editors you personally hand-pick". WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:24, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
User:WhatamIdoing what is the difference between hand-pick and WP:CANVASS?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 21:36, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
None. Hand-picking editors to invite to a discussion, especially if it looks like your side is "losing" at the time, will basically always be deemed a violation of the anti-canvassing rules. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:52, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
(Apologies for the length; and this seems like the most active discussion of this particular issue, feel free to move if desired.) The FA discussion was in 2006, which was a very different time for Wikipedia as I'm sure you're aware, so even if it wasn't advertised (which I tried to find but could have failed in searching) I'm not sure how relevant that is for modeling consensus building today. Even still, it attracted 35 vote-like things. The GA discussion that applies now, I believe, was from a 2010 proposal (which also is a long time ago now; earlier less discussed attempts at adding the GA icon seems like they were stopped in various ways and was at the time listed as a perennial proposal and a 2008 discussion listed how adding the GA icon was proposed/rolled back in various ways, including deletion discussions), and although held on the project talk page, the 2010 proposal was at advertised at Village pump proposals, a FA project talk page, WikiProject military history, WikiProject ships, WikiProject aviation, and WikiProject U.S. roads (that I could find). So the GA topicon decision was not solely a project-level decision, based on my understanding. Skynxnex (talk) 17:20, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
User:Skynxnex, It is interesting to learn what GA went through. Do you have an understanding of what changed for the final attempt to make it successful?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:33, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
@Geometry guy might know the history. To give you an idea of how much things have changed, I wrote WP:PROPOSAL in 2008. Before then, policy and guideline status was basically determined through an absence of edit warring to remove the tag. Things are much more formal and much more vote-based now than they were back then. WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:55, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
No, I don't other than what I've read now as I was not involved in that discussion at all at the time, and just was not involved on the back house part of Wikipedia then. But my read is the 2010 proposal succeeded because GA was see as more rigorous/reliable than it was in 2006/2008 and the proposal was somewhat framed correctly and done in the right way so sufficient support was found. It still had significant opposition (including some people who expressed doubts about the FA topicon still). Skynxnex (talk) 20:08, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
I was asked a related question recently. The 2008 GA icon debate is discussed (with links) in Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-05-19/Dispatches. I suspect GA Sweeps, which checked all early GAs for quality, had a significant impact on the 2010 acceptance of a GA icon: see Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2010-03-15/Dispatches. I agree that the 2010 proposal was carefully done and appropriately advertised. Also there was a more of a sense that this was not such a big deal, and so less strongly expressed views on each side than in 2008. Geometry guy 17:44, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Now that you mention it, I recall participating in Sweeps.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 17:52, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
User:Geometry guy, are you involve in WP:VA. This sweeps makes me think about the issues recently raised about VA. It seems that there is broad consensus that VA has problems that would offend or confuse the reader. I am pondering whether it is possible to create a WP:WIAVA type set of criteria (similar to WP:WIAGA) that could be swept for and that would be generally supported as making VA a palatable and presentable focus for a top icon.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 18:05, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
I don't recall ever being involved in WP:VA, but I had a look at the topicon discussion there. I think the main issue that needs to be addressed is that a topicon (as with anything on an article page) has to have some value for readers as well as editors.
I actually like the idea of highlighting what is the core and most important content for readers: an "outline of knowledge" has precedent in the Propaedia, and can be useful for home-schooling or self-study. From this perspective, I think the term "vital" is unfortunate, as it suggests the importance to editors and the encyclopedia of the article, rather than its value to readers.
The other issue is the one you raise: if these "core" articles are to be identified to readers, then the process by which articles are assigned a core/vital level needs to be transparent and widely accepted by the wikipedia community. Setting up criteria and reevaluating the current list could be part of that process. Educating the community about the process would be another part. I hope that is helpful. Geometry guy 18:40, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
User:Geometry guy, can you clarify your perception of the difference between importance to the encyclopedia and value to the reader.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 21:17, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
My understanding is that WP:VA is motivated by the desire that articles on vital topics should be of high quality and hence prioritised for improvement: the motivation is to attract editors and enhance the reputation of Wikipedia. I cannot speak for what readers want in general, but my hypothetical reader is someone who wants to be broadly well-educated about the core of human knowledge. Such a person may study a level 1 or 2 article in detail, but only care about the lead of a level 4 or 5 article. As your question highlights, there is a strong overlap between both interests, which is why I like the idea of a WP:VA top-icon in principle. Geometry guy 21:43, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Ivy League POY

Tony – not sure where your article creation motivation lies these days, but I've been chipping away at the Ivy League POYs this year and I've gotten it down to 4 red links. Among them, one remaining Princeton player, Sean Jackson (basketball) (1992). I know you're a Princeton guy, so I thought I'd throw this player out there for you just in case you have the proclivity. No pressure either way. SportsGuy789 (talk) 20:47, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

  • User:SportsGuy789, I guess I have created at least 6 guys on that template. I guess I will get to him at some point. This is a likely season, since Prineton basketball has something to be excited about and he may have a post season run to time with a DYK. I might starts something in a month or so if Princeton basketball is still looking good.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 21:03, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
Princeton is the real deal this year, carrying momentum from last season's S16 run. A coordinated DYK during their ramping-up run this year could be neat. SportsGuy789 (talk) 21:12, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Campbell's Soup Cans

The article Campbell's Soup Cans you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Campbell's Soup Cans for comments about the article, and Talk:Campbell's Soup Cans/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On this day" column do not affect DYK eligibility.
