WP:ERRORS

[edit]

Hello! I reverted you on T:ITN. The use of "COP28" was explicitly discussed and not opposed at ITNC, so if you'd like to see that changed please feel free to start a new discussion at WP:ERRORS so I've just started a discussion about it on WP:ERRORS. Ed [talk] [OMT] 20:38, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've just reverted back to your original, to let Errors decide. WP:BOLDLEAD is an article guideline to include the article name in bold near the start, not sure why you're using that to justify the removal of the specific 'The' rather than the general article? Stephen 21:05, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for not being clear enough there. I've linked that because none of the examples have "the" bolded, and I've not seen a good reason or consensus for why ITN would differ from all our articles. Ed [talk] [OMT] 21:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Because there's a difference between the United Nations Climate Change conference and the United Nations Climate Change Conference that ran this year. The examples wouldn't have "the" bolded because the guideline is about including the article name in bold in the lead of an article. ITN is not an article. Stephen 21:32, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, ITN is not an article. What I don't understand is why it would choose to differ from our article guidelines. We wouldn't typically bold or link "the" in either circumstance there, especially when the context is clear. Ed [talk] [OMT] 05:15, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not banned from MP talk. – Sca (talk)

a) It was Errors not MP talk, b) No, you're not banned from there, c) There's no chit chat on Errors, the discussion was regarding British English and your comment was irrelevantly concerning US English. Stephen 22:37, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ARBPIA ITN question

[edit]

Does ARBPIA apply to ITN? i.e., is that IP comment qualified to be considered in determining consensus? Or does "broadly construed" mean non-ECs can't even vote in I-P ITN nominations? I noticed you removed my SPA note but I'm still wondering if as an IP it's still supposed to be struck. JM (talk) 20:05, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it applies site wide as far as I can tell. Stephen 20:09, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, mind if I strike that IP comment? JM (talk) 20:10, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all, delete it. Stephen 20:35, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, there's an IP who has now made 6 edits to that nomination, including two separate votes, both left unsigned. I've left the notice on their talk page and pointed out their edits but both votes are still up, I've already reverted them and I don't think I'm allowed to do so more than I have. What do to? JM (talk) 23:50, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I hadn't noticed they'd come back. Votes removed and blocked them. Stephen 00:07, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JOBTITLES

[edit]

Morning, hope you're well.

President of Chile and Prime Minister of Pakistan are proper name job titles, so should be capitalised accordingly. This was raised at WP:ERRORS as it creates a weird inconsistency when we also have President of Ecuador on the same template. I don't see that the former part is relevant, it's still a named job title. Please could you self-revert, as I was responding to a specific point raised at ERRORS and we should present a consistent approach to readers. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 10:54, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Swap pic for variety

[edit]

Hi Stephen! I appreciate swapping the pic for variety, but can I request instead of swapping one white man for another white man (best actor/best supporting actor), we go with either best actress Emma Stone or best supporting actress Da'Vine Joy Randolph (pics taken from the article)? Thanks for considering it, Levivich (talk) 01:27, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Protection of ITN doc page

[edit]

Hey Stephen, I noticed there's an edit request to the ITN template doc page. You had protected it two years ago saying that there's No reason for non-admins to edit the ITN template documentation. Given that there has been vandalism in the past, but still a need to edit it, wouldn't it be sensible to lower the protection to be autoconfirmed? SWinxy (talk) 23:08, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The one edit request in two years has been handled. Stephen 01:39, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was here to comment similarly. Perhaps extended confirmed would be sufficient. In the spirit of openess, I can imagine someone that might be inclined to tweak just wouldn't bother if they had to format an edit request. —Bagumba (talk) 09:05, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

News: Iranian embassy vs consulate

[edit]

Hi Stephen, re. your change here[1], I'd ask you to read the lengthy discussions at Talk:Israeli_bombing_of_the_Iranian_embassy_in_Damascus. In short, there's no consensus to use the term "consulate", in fact there're strong arguments that the premises were not a consulate (not on an official list of consulates, not a separate compound, questions re. sourcing, etc.). Therefore, editors have settled on the term embassy per the majority of sources and since the building appeared part of the Iranian Embassy complex. May I expect you to self-revert? Cheers, — kashmīrī TALK 09:58, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No, you may not expect that. I don’t have time to read all that. The ITN blurb was changed after a discussion at Errors noting that consulate is given in the first sentence of the article. Stephen 12:33, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

July music

On a friend's birthday - she is pictured on my talk - I have another RD death article that needs reviewing, Martti Wallén. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:05, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Pictured on the Main page: Brian's Mozart family grand tour, my story today, and Mozart related to all three items of music on my talk: our 2023 concert, an opera in a theatre where a Mozart premiere took place, and those remembered, the bass and Liana Isakadze, a violinist from Georgia (whose article would be better with more details about her music-making). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:39, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I remember today Bach's 1724 cantata for this Sunday which is unusual in many respects. The violinist made it to the Main page, but another woman needs attention for RD, Marina Kondratyeva. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:58, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

She's on the Main page now. My story today is - because of the anniversary of the premiere OTD in 1782 - about Die Entführung aus dem Serail, opera by Mozart, while yesterday's was - because of the TFA - about Les contes d'Hoffmann, opera by Offenbach, - so 3 times Mozart again if you click on "music" ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:18, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Today's story is about a photographer who took iconic pictures, especially View from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Manhattan, 9/11, yesterday's was a great mezzo, and on Thursday we watched a sublime ballerina. If that's not enough my talk offers chamber music from two amazing concerts. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:01, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Main Page history/2024 July 30b had a baritone, a violinist, a composer and a Bach cantata, - almost too much, and the composer's article, Wolfgang Rihm, improved much over the last days, could still grow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:23, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Job title

[edit]

Question on this. Does it not fall under the first bullet point at MOS:JOBTITLE? I imagine I'm missing something, but I doublechecked MOS and thought the alt had it right. Appreciate any insight you have! Ed [talk] [OMT] 04:33, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Because it has a modifier, Incumbent U.S., it's not a title but a job title. At least I think that's where we've landed. Also makes it consistent with the other president on there. Stephen 04:56, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. I figured it went the other way because the title was followed by the name. The MOS table should probably have an example that speaks to this scenario... but it's not really that important, I suppose. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity! Ed [talk] [OMT] 05:12, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Today I have three "musicians" on the Main page, one is also the topic of my story, like 22 July but with interview and the music to be played today -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:16, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

On 13 August, Bach's cantata was 300 years old, and the image one. The cantata is an extrordinary piece, using the chorale's text and famous melody more than others in the cycle. It's nice to have not only a recent death, but also this "birthday" on the Main page. And a rainbow in my places. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:02, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

He got attention, now some for Helmut Bauer (bishop) would be nice because his Requiem (livestream) will be tomorrow. - Today I remember an organist who was pictured on the Main page on his birthday ten years ago, and I found two recent organ concerts to match, - see top of my talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:27, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Today brought his timely promotion to the Main page on the day when pieces from Mozart's Requiem were performed for him. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:38, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Now it's Leif Segerstam. Listen to the music in my story: I put it on DYK 10 years ago (mentioning Ukraine) and heard it today for the first time. That violinist/violist was incredible! Last month someone added to her article that she died, - a year ago OTD. Not recent enough to be mentioned, and we can't celebrate her birthday, - we don't even have a year. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:31, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I made Segerstam my big story ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:19, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Precious anniversary

Precious
Eight years!

Another cantata turned 300, Mache dich, mein Geist, bereit, BWV 115. Another bio last day for RD: Walter Jacob. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:57, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you followed to a rich day. Today a caricature, for a change. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:35, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Happy whatever you celebrate today, - more who died, more to come, and they made the world richer. Greetings from Madrid where I took the pic of assorted Cucurbita in 2016. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:07, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

2024 BiH floods

[edit]

Hello. Just to help with updates: the government of H-N County issues daily reports (usually from 7 to 8 PM). Here is the latest one (bottom line: "18 dead in Jablanica and Konjic"] (Fojnica is in another county.) KWiki (talk) 22:45, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Best to make sure the numbers in the article are aligned, as that's what people will look at for consistency with the main page. Stephen 23:25, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oct 16 OTD

[edit]

I saw that you removed an entry from OTD. On my resolution, the OTD has a huge gap, and one more entry doesn't cause the template to go past the DYK template. Does your version of the Main Page have any gaps in OTD? I'm tempted to revert your edit but I wanted to check in with you first. Z1720 (talk) 01:25, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, we only have 3 ITNs, albeit one of them is long so probably the equivalent of 4 ITNs. We've never usually had 6 OTDs in that case. It was very unbalanced in my widescreen view. Stephen 02:45, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Main page balance

[edit]

Just letting you know that I removed an OTD item just before midnight UTC to achieve main page balance. I know that it's a bit subjective, as it depends on screen size etc, but it looked "perfect" after the OTD removal. Schwede66 04:29, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It’s a fine line for sure. I’ve undone my removal, I’ll let others tweak it as it does look ok now, Stephen 08:08, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
