About Amakuru

I've been a member of Wikipedia since February 2006, and I was promoted to administrator in April 2016. I currently live in London, United Kingdom, having previously lived in Rwanda for several years. When I'm not reading some of the fine articles written by others, I tend to divide my Wiki-time between three main areas:

  1. Article writing, particularly those related to Rwanda, with occasional excursions into other topics. My long term goal is to get all Rwanda related articles up to B class or better, but it's slow work!
  2. WikiGnome activity, making minor fix ups here and there, links to disambiguation pages etc. I recommend WP:AWB for this kind of work.
  3. Administrative tasks and consensus building - my favourite haunt is WP:RM, where I involve myself in some discussions, close others, and work with the editors there on the direction of that process and all the policies around article titles, primary topics and notability. Now that I'm an administrator, I intend to start slowly learning the ropes in the other areas of admin activity.

I am happy to consider any reasonable administrative requests, please just leave me a message on my talk page and I'll look into it.

My current username is a Kinyarwanda word, whose literal meaning is news. It is the most common greeting in the country, equivalent to the English "how are you". The dialogue goes as follows:

  • Amakuru? (What's the news?)
  • Ni meza. (It is good.)

I started editing under the separate account User:Steverwanda in 2006, and this user account has been renamed twice - it started as User:SteveRwanda, and was briefly also User:Muraho. I currently have three WP:Alternative accounts set up - User:Amakuru-Mobile, User:Amakuru-Confirmed, and User:Amakuru-NotConfirmed.

A photograph of northwestern Rwanda

Rwanda is a country in central and eastern Africa located a few degrees south of the Equator, bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. All of Rwanda is at high elevation, with a geography dominated by mountains in the west, savanna in the east, and numerous lakes throughout the country. The climate is temperate. The predominantly rural population of 11.7 million people forms three main groups: the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. After Rwanda was first settled by hunter-gatherers in the Stone and Iron Ages, the population coalesced into clans and then into a Tutsi-led kingdom. It was colonised by Europeans in the 19th century and gained independence from Belgium on 1 July 1962 after a Hutu revolt led to massacres of Tutsis and the establishment of a Hutu-dominated republic. In 1990 the Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) launched a civil war, which was followed by the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, in which Hutu extremists killed an estimated 500,000 to 1 million Tutsi and moderate Hutu but were ultimately defeated by the RPF. The economy suffered during the genocide, but has since strengthened and depends heavily on subsistence agriculture. (more...)

For your contributions to bring Rwandan Revolution to Good Article status. Thanks, and keep up the good work!  — ₳aron 09:18, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you! I was really impressed by the constructive and non-acrimonious tone and contributions from everyone involved in the recent AFD discussion on the Alliance of Women Directors article. What could have been—with the wrong editors involved—a very nasty debate, turned into a very positive discussion. Even editors who strongly felt that the article should be deleted worked hard to find sources and fix problems with it. This is the kind of positive collaboration people don't hear a lot about in Wikipedia-land and I'd like to recognize it. Carl Henderson (talk) 19:58, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your help! Mc twizzle (talk) 20:42, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
