[edit]- Pakoire (talk) 10:17, 5 July 2023 (UTC) I was looking forward to attending but an opportunity came up to do a clay vessel course with artist stevei houkāmau which overlaps. I have told lots of people about it so there might be one or two newcomers.
- Marshelec (talk) I can't attend this one unfortunately, because I am the organiser of a club athletics event today. I have provided my report in absentia.

3. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on
- Two things to note (1.) I gave a presentation about Wikipedia this week to the Theatre Aotearoa day - Performing Data in Australasia symposium, at Victoria University of Wellington. Present were members of AusStage an Australian data base who are absorbing the data from the Theatre Aotearoa database. I introduced Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons also to the attendees. I have some data questions that arose that I'll discuss when I am next able to attend a session. (2.) I was also part of a meeting with Nina Tonga and Kasi Valu and a discussion about potential and value of Pasifika Arts and Wikipedia. It was highlighted that the articles created as part of this project are being noticed and valued by the biography subjects for the visibility they bring. Pakoire (talk) 10:34, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- Marshelec provides this report in absentia. Work in the past month includes creating new articles: The White Swan Hotel, Greytown and Colin Pugh Sports Bowl. Marshelec has been active as a reviewer for Articles for Creation and has assisted in getting these draft articles published: Tom Sainsbury, Dominic Hoey, and Lloyd Godman. Another draft article that was accepted after some tidy up was: Nate Wilbourne about a teenage environmental activist from Nelson. This work led on to some minor improvements to Wharariki Ecosanctuary and Farewell Spit. Also did a major rewrite and expansion of Pariwhero / Red Rocks. Other recent activity includes Treasurer work for WANZ, and preparation of a white paper on prioritisation of content development initiatives, as an input to WANZ strategy.
- Chocmilk03: I've been fairly tied up with work and personal commitments so have only done the odd bits and pieces recently. I now have a contact at Read NZ Te Pou Muramura who has been very helpful with keeping me posted on their new writer bios, and was pleased to create pages for Ruby Solly and Anthony Lapwood as a consequence. She is open to future opportunities for collaboration which I'd be keen to chat with this group about. Other new bios include Rachel Buchanan, Nora Sanderson and Noelle McCarthy, and I've also worked on expanding and updating the page for Read NZ Te Pou Muramura. Also very much looking forward to Wikimania, just waiting for confirmation of flight booking. :) Chocmilk03 (talk) 22:08, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
- Stitchbird2 (talk) 05:58, 7 July 2023 (UTC) I've been steadily working in wikidata, wikipedia and Bionomia. I created 7 new forget-me-not species articles Myosotis australis, Myosotis mooreana, Myosotis lytteltonensis, Myosotis australis subsp. australis, Myosotis australis subsp. saruwagedica, and Myosotis amabilis. I made substantial edits for Critter of the Week to Belgica antarctica, Creophilus oculatus and Cavolinia tridentata as well as to the following biographies: Elizabeth McCoy (microbiologist), Esther Lederberg, Rosa Luxemburg, Masatoshi Nei, and Phil Kerslake. Plus I added dozens of mostly scientific publications of these and other scientists to wikidata, and did several disambiguations for botanical collectors in the Te Papa database-wikidata-Bionomia. I continue to learn A LOT from Ambrosia10, to whom I am very grateful. I am all booked to go to Wikimania 2023 (thank you WANZ!) to give a presentation with Avocadobabygirl and really looking forward to that. Our fortnightly staff informal wiki meetups are going well at Te Papa and I'm helping mentor a new wikipedia editor who is working on NZ harvestmen species.
- Ambrosia10 - I've recently presented to the natural history team at Te Papa see Connecting Te Papa natural history collectors and identifiers and have been working on some Critter of the Week articles, continuing to work furiously on the Harvard Index of Botanists and have been adding entomologists who have worked for or donated their collections to the Field Museum to Wikidata and then Bionomia. I'm going to be visiting the Field Museum and getting a back of house tour of the entomology collection and so want to show them their collection Bionomia profile with Wikidata items for deceased collectors. I've also put time in drafting and submitting a funding application to the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand committee to go to TDWG2023 in Hobart. Fingers crossed! Wikimania flights & registration admin is progressing and I'm hoping to officially register when I get my scholarship email! I've also been helping work on a scholarly paper for the NZ Thesis project, still progressing on the Women Genera 2 scholarly publications (both relying on Wikidata) and continuing to work on the Course Undergraduate University Experience (CURE) modules in my other project Hidden figures including now a module on Wikidata and a module on Bionomia (that uses Wikidata for deceased collectors).
- Avocadobabygirl - Got Ambrosia10 in to talk to the natural history team at Te Papa and join in our wiki lunchtime. Lots of positive responses and more people getting ORCID/Bionomia profiles, which will beautifully populate when we release our specimen data on GBIF. Stitchbird2 and I had our Wikimania submission confirmed - we'll be doing 30 minutes on packaging up images, data, and knowledge from heritage collections in a sustainable way. I've roped in someone to help with agent disambiguation once we replace the current Te Papa Mix n Match set. Loaded a small set of photographs from Through shaded glass, which involved updating the TePapaColl template to handle some humanities fields and updating the previous Myosotis uploads with OpenRefine.
- Wainuiomartian (talk) 21:59, 7 July 2023 (UTC) I've been adding sources to an existing article abut Shane van Gisbergen and have started a draft article about wharves in Wellington.
- Gertrude206 added a section on NZ to Repatriation and reburial of human remains and has been thinking about how to add similar info to Te Papa page. Finally finished and published an article on Green Lane Hospital, Auckland after someone else published an article on Greenlane Clinical Centre. Now planning an article on National Women's Hospital.
- Noracrentiss has been editing article but made mistake then unedited it. Secretary of WANZ so has been doing a lot of work in related to this. Has a Wikisource question - will reach out to Giantflightlessbirds for advice and pass on the information to Wainuiomartian.
- Quilt Phase He has been taking photos of sculpture and adding them to Wikidata. Taking photos at night as well as during the day. Winter is getting in the way of taking these images. But he is going away on a trip to Rarotonga in a couple of weeks. He's looked at Wikipedia articles needing photos by country - 51 pages are requesting photos. Colleagues based in Rarotonga have expressed concern about taking photos without cultural respect. He suggested a collaboration with the editors based in Rarotonga to avoid issues. He's also used the Wikicommons copyright permissions process and has been getting used to this.
- Porrhothele - A new editor! Being supported by Wants to give love to endemic harvestman species. Morphed into a full project. Nearly all type specimens are photographed at Te Papa. He's getting all the type specimens for arachnids into Wikicommons and plans to use in 250 articles. First article is nearly finished!
- Einebillion, - Mostly worked in mix’n’match on the Alexander Turnbull Library sets. I've got frustrated with Te Papa set and I'm thrilled that Avocadobabygirl is organising improving this as the current set is almost unusable with frequent 404 links and data improvements on Te Papa's end. Most of my work has been WANZ committee work including updating the position description for Executive Advisor and the job ad. The poisiton is advertised on Seek so please circulate it to suitable people. It is up for a month. I've also been organising the annual in-person Committee strategy weekend happening on the 22 -23 July. Final organising with the facilitator next week. Voting on items next week. Some catering to organise and travel booking organised. Also beginning to collate information for the end of year WMF general grant funding report for 2022 - 2023. There is a stack of metrics that need to be done for it but she now knowns what she should be reporting on.
4. Progress on Action Points and future events
- Don't forget to add your program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page.
- Draft annual report 2023 for folk to edit with their contributions.
- New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref.
- New information: Video on how to add thesis to people's pages has been completed.
- Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10
- 2023 Annual Wikidata Fellowship Grant Wikimedia Australia in partnership with Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand announced their 2023 Wikidata fellows Alistair Kwan, Brodie Hoare, and Mike Dickison. There is a Fellowship up for grabs as one person has had to drop out. If NZ editors are interested talk to Einebillion for information on this.
- 2023 August 16-19 Wikimania, Singapore and online The application process for scholarship to attend has closed. A number of the Wellington group have received scholarships to travel.
- Visit to Parliamentary Librarians After a year, they have finally had their Wikipedia guidance for staff approved. So now they are ready to move ahead with a project. They said "Thanks for your patience as we manoeuvred through this." I have added it to the next WANZ committee agenda but there may be an opportunity for an intro workshop or two for anyone here interested. I will find out. Let me know if you are interested / have time during a workday. Pakoire? both Ambrosia10 and Gertrude206 offered to support if any event or workshop is undertaken going forward.
5. Good Article / Featured Article Work
- Focus article is: Matiu / Somes Island
- Wainuiomartian nominated the article for Good Article status. The GA review of the article commenced on 29 May. See:Talk:Matiu / Somes Island/GA1 However, after commencing the review, the reviewer appears to have made no further progress. Marshelec and Wainuiomartian have both made enquiries of the reviewer on their talk page. We did get an acknowledgement, but there has been no progress. Looking at the reviewer's contributions, there is only a single edit in the past 7 days. I propose we wait for another couple of weeks and send another enquiry. If there is still no progress we may need to ask for a new GA reviewer (ie back to square one). A bit disappointing, but no doubt we will get there eventually.Marshelec (talk) 21:54, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
6. Wiki News - add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of
- On Thursday, 15 June at 17.00 UTC, upon kind invitation from Wiki Movimento Brazil, Sandra Fauconnier gave a fresh introduction to uploading files to Wikimedia Commons with OpenRefine. Did anyone participate? See this youtube video for the presentation.
