Other news - is that I've been selected to be given a Wikimania scholarship so I'm in the process of drafting up FOUR abstracts in order to present at Wikimania on a variety of my projects. All four will have co-authors and even possibly co-presenters. The four abstracts will cover the Te Papa Research Project, the Hidden Figures CURE university course materials project, the Women Genera project and the International Botanical Congress Project. I'm also considering adding an abstract about BHL-Wiki Project but it will depend on whether I've actually got the capacity to do this as I'm worried I won't get to see any of the conference if I put in five.
Other work - all the above projects are progressing with the Hidden Figures CURE currently going on a bit of a go slow as the publishers are swamped at the moment and are delaying giving us feedback. The Wikidata module is definitely making progress with my colleague testing out our instructions with her graduate students this week. We'll then incorporate their feedback, finalise everything and then submit it to the publishers for their feedback. Once we've incorporated that we can get that module published and the course will be complete at least from my perspective. Makenzie and I are also starting to draft up a scholarly article on the CURE to help advertise it. The Women Genera project is progressing with us continuing to write the data analysis paper. the international Botanical Congress Project is also progressing. In disappointing news our abstract on how Wiki engagement can be of benefit to the botanical community has been rejected. However the organising committee has suggested we do a poster instead. Poster sessions often have less impact so we are now strategising how we can make ours fun, engaging and get folk to come over, make sure they've got a Wikidata item, connect them to their work etc. All the organisers are working hard on "wikifying" the conference and getting resources ready for the workshop. The BHL-Wiki working group is progressing well. I'm the chairperson and help liaise between the Wikimedia Foundation, BHL and editors as well as help organise and run the monthly meeting. If anyone is interested in attending the meeting you can find the agenda and zoom link here. Anyone interested in or working with BHL in any Wiki project are welcome to attend and also add to the agenda. As the chair of this working group I've been invited by BHL to come to Chicago in May to give a presentation to the Annual General Meeting on the progress the BHL-Wiki group are making. As they are flying me out all that way I'm also planning to give another presentation to their public symposium giving some examples of BHL work I've been doing with Wiki and also with institutions that contribute or fund BHL.
  • Einebillion presented on copyright and creative commons licensing at the Picture event last week. Has also been working with the Committee to lodge the 2024/25 business plan and budget for WANZ. We've reviewed our position descriptions and accepted these. We're also working on draft policies for operational reserves and grantmaking. Reminder that the WikiCon is happening next weekend. Places still available, please remind anyone from Auckland that there's a fun weekend happening at AUT, cost $10.
  • Gertrude206 has been only doing gardening. Has in mind to photograph some buildings associated with Chinese history in Wellington to use for the April photography workshop.
  • Midstrath - has been painting his house. But he's done about half a dozen edits. Run a problem about a source being used in a Wikipedia article. It's a book but it's marked as fiction when it is really non-fiction on Google Books. Group discussed and came up with a solution of contacting the British Library to get the metadata organised and pushed out for the book.
  • Avocadobabygirl- Been helping/supporting Ambrosia10 with Te Papa research expeditions work. Thinking about what can Te Papa do with this information? Working on a base level of directory of NZ museums into Wikidata. Very light info at first will be uploaded. Intend to do this light at first and then add information. Also working on making Nancy Adams images of collected specimens and water colours openly licensed and uploaded into Wkicommons under a CC BY for image specimens licensed. This is signed off and she is updating data.
  • Noracrentiss - mainly committee work but with some wiki gardening. Has also been working on Wikidata but has some questions and wants to discuss these with Ambrosia10.

Future events

[edit]
If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
If you're interested in organising a Wiki event, Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) provides support funding. Contact admin @ wikimedia.nz for more information on how to apply. It's really simple - we promise!
This is the link to register for the event at our ticket provider Humanitix
Please note there is a $NZ10 booking fee for the event. The organising group will be applying for funding to cover the catering and other costs and keep the conference affordable. The cost of the Conference dinner is not included in registration.
Presentations and workshops will be held in two classrooms at the Auckland University of Technology, Sir Paul Reeves WG Building, 2 Governor Fitzroy Place, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010.
Scholarship funding to cover travel and accommodation information is on the event page. Link above.

Wikidata Levelling Up Days

[edit]
  • Wikidata Levelling Up Days events This is an online event designed to welcome new people to Wikidata and to provide an introduction to a selection of useful tools and topics so you can start getting involved with Wikidata. During April 5-7 and April 12-14 there will be presentations, live editing and social events.

Outstanding Action Points to Progress

[edit]
  • Otari-Wilton's Bush event ideation and organising We need an organiser! Group agreed to move the dates to autumn. User:Noracrentiss will talk with User:Ambrosia10 about organising resource. WANZ application could easily include an event organiser but we need someone to lead it and shape the agenda of the event. - Next steps? Stitchbird and Ambrosia10 are keen to organise but both are committed up to the middle of August due to Wikimania. Both intend to commit to this after that date.
  • Parliamentary Library The library has had it's Wikipedia guidance for staff approved. Any update on support for project? User:Giantflightlessbirds was organising a lifting of the IP address block on editing Wiki projects. Any update?

  • Content: New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. There is also a video on how to add thesis to people's pages. This work is ongoing and could use more editors to help out.
