Yvonne Rust Editathon

[edit]
Left Bank
  • Left Bank Art Gallery, Tainui St, Greymouth
  • Saturday 26 November 2022
  • 10:30 am – 4:00 pm
  • Tea and coffee supplied

This is a meetup to improve the Wikipedia coverage of potter, teacher, and artist Yvonne Rust (1922–2002), on the occasion of her 100th birthday. Rust was an important figure in West Coast art and was teacher and mentor to a circle of creative people locally and throughout New Zealand. An excellent 2011 biography by Theresa Sjoquist, Yvonne Rust: maverick spirit (her Wordpress site) will be a key reference for this event. The editathon is kindly hosted by the Left Bank Art Gallery.

  • Any resources such as books, journals, magazine or newspaper articles relevant to Yvonne Rust and West Coast artists.
  • Photos you've taken, especially of people or places relevant to the topic; we can help you upload these to Wikimedia Commons so Wikipedia articles can use them.

Media

[edit]

We'll be taking photos for the record. If you don't want to be in a photo, just choose a red name lanyard; if you don't mind, pick a green one.

Outcomes

[edit]

The day was a great success, with many people turning up who knew Yvonne and had photos to donate. Katrina Brown of the Left Bank was kept busy scanning and identifying prints, and Mike spent several hours interviewing, including:

  • Grant Hudson, who spent a year working in the Brewery with Yvonne in the 1960s, and later moved to Barrytown. Grant was not interviewed for the Sjoquist book, so this interview will be written up and published in the Left Bank's blog.
  • Evelyn Hewlett and Glenys Birchfield, who were students of Yvonne for five years at Greymouth High School.
  • Paul Caffyn, who first met Yvonne in 1970 and later visited her in Parua Bay.
  • Roger Ewer, who worked with her in the Studio of Design in Christchurch in the early 1960s.

Evelyn also brought along a huge pot of Yvonne's made during her Greymouth period, which will be photographed, copyright cleared, and added to the Wikipedia article.
