Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.

If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.

If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.

If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

1. Introduction to meet up by organisers

• Group welcomed new user Dactylantha to the meetup and explained the format and the purpose of the meetup. Dactylantha has a mentor in Prosperosity.

2. Wikimedia User Group of Aoteaora New Zealand Update and Discussion (15 minutes)

Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand Inc (WANZ)

• Note: Transparency of meeting agendas and minutes is limited at the moment due to a lack of a website for WANZ. This is being worked on to make them publicly available. If you want copies please contact secretary-at-wikimedia.nz.

Update from President, WANZ

• Committee has been working on documenting the benefits to membership of Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand Inc. Soc. in preparation to recruit formal membership of the society in preparation for the Annual General Meeting due in March
• Also been working on establishing the bank account and transferring funds from the User Group account to the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand account - seeking permission from Wikimedia Foundation to do so
• Affiliate members have attended the ESEAP and WOW conferences in Sydney in November. Update on agenda item below.
• President supported a small grant going to a Fijian editor to translate into Fijian Hindi and communicate to the Fijian Hindi editor base the Movement Charter information https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/MSIG/Suyash.dwivedi/Movement_Charter_Ambassador_program_for_hif_speaking_community
• Everyone in the User Group is encouraged to add their activities to the 2022 Yearly (January to December) Annual report. Ambrosia10 noted that they had added a lot of their activities but now it's reading like they do everything so it would be great for other editors and organisers to add in their project work. Some added the information to the talk page of the report. Einebillion agreed this was fine as there's going to be a final edit in early January. Closing date to add content is 31 December.

Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2022

Don't forget to add your program to the Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. • New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this. Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10.

Update from Ambrosia10 that the bulk of the project is completed as far as wikidata edits and imports are concerned. DrThneed is focussed on documenting procedures used so this can be used by others. Group is focussed now on communication including writing papers and publishing results of project. Einebillion encouraged the group to submit a presentation proposal to Wikimania 2023 in Singapore. This project could easily be replicated around the world by other university libraries with thesis repositories.

Update Einebillion reported that the conferences were extremely useful in establishing a benchmark for the Aotearoa New Zealand user group. We are doing very well not only in content but also in organisation and strategic direction. The ESEAP conference was particularly useful in terms of providing an energy boost to the seven user group members that attended and showed a diversity of projects that could be replicated in New Zealand should organisers be interested in setting these up. The overall report for the affiliate details the usefulness of conference attendence and includes links to the individual reports of New Zealand attendees. Reports from other attendees are available in the Report tab of the conference page.

• 2023 February WikiCon Wellington
• 2023 Annual Wikidata Fellowship Grant One New Zealand and two Australian fellowships available. Applications opened on 9 January and close on Sunday 26 February 2023. We are open to applicants from all backgrounds and skill levels, and support proposals that involve investigations. We are looking for proposals that are enthusiastic and innovative as opposed to requiring pre-existing technical skills. This is an opportunity to get paid to learn. Curate a data set, develop a prototype or undertake an investigation using Wikidata. You will be matched with a Wikimedian who will mentor you throughout your project offering resources, feedback and support. • 2023 August 16-19 Wikimania 2023 in Singapore
• Other suggestions for themes around events include Library Week, Conservation Week, International Volunteers Day, 24hr editathon for Ada Lovelace Day, WikiSource Women's History Month for Wikisource, Winter Olympics, Matariki Event, Library Week. We should think about the focus of the work - is it to onboard folk or to focus on content. Any further update?

Anything to update / discuss?

• Congratulations to Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum for their recent success in their Wikimedia Alliances Fund grant application https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Alliances_Fund/Understanding_our_past:using_Wikipedia_as_a_tool_to_support_local_history_in_T%C4%81maki_Makaurau.

Group warmly endorsed the congratulations and agreed that supporting Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum is a priority, particularly the proposed new tertary editors. The group noted that this would build capability and editors within the Auckland region and hopefully this would result in regular attendence of the Auckland Meetup. New editor Dactylantha noted that they had put their hand up to facilitate the regular Auckland meetup. Einebillion supported this and said this was a great opportunity to learn to do new pages when setting up new meetup pages and editing meetup notes. Einebillion offered assistance with this if this was something that Dactylantha would like to learn.

• Survey of favourite content tools currently running. The Content Partnerships Hub wants to help to support important tools that are crucial for Wikimedia content partnerships - maintain them, and make sure they keep running. To know better which tools we should prioritize, this survey asks you: what are your favorite (and most crucial) tools to do content partnerships? Survey closes 8 January 2023.

This survey is useful as it is another way to escalate the issues a number of members have been having with the Internet Archive bot IABot. This is now partially working with raw url links but not for the full page of links as it was prior to breaking. Marshelec has asked Einebillion to escalate the issue to Wikimedia Foundation in the hopes that someone at headquarters can help fix the bot. Einebillion has contacted Jacquline who is liaising with other Wikimedia Foundation employees in the hopes this issue can be picked up and resolved.

• I'd like talk briefly about music notation, and a patch for the Score extension I've been working on to output SVG files. Does anyone have experience dealing with upstream PHP devs? I've got a ticket T49578 and a patch on Gerrit waiting for review, but it's all gone suddenly quiet. Anyway, check out the lovely SVG output I've coerced from the latest version of Lilypond on my test wiki, here.—Jon (talk)

Jon (talk) showed an example on Bass trombone and discussed the improvements to the music notation tool. Jon was encouraged to keep reminding the Gerrit community about the review as little and often persistance has had results for others in the past.. There was a general discussion on CiteQ and the possibility of reversion by other editors that do not like the relational nature of CiteQ with wikidata.

4. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated – You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

• Jon has been working on musical instrument articles removing uncited and inaccurate statements, adding correct content with citations, and uploading images to Wikimedia Commons for use in the articles.
• Marshelec has recently been focussing on Good Articles. He submitted the article Wangapeka Track for GA review, then decided to undertake a GA Review (although there is no "quid pro quo"). He has reviewed Shipyard Railway (passed), Tellico Dam (failed), and is currently reviewing Perry County, Tennessee. An editor has offered to review Wangapeka Track, but this only happened this morning. Also helped out on Wikisource with proof reading S:Beautiful Shells of New Zealand

There was an enquiry as to what GA meant and the group explained the article rankings and that GA meant Good Article and referred to the WP:GA page. Further discussion on how to nominate articles for Good Article review and the process for Wikipedia:Reviewing good articles

• Prosperosity has been working on Auckland War Memorial Museum publications and ensuring these are properly reflected in Wikidata. The publications are in a number of different repositories and this work is in preparation to getting these items into Wikisource for transcription.
• Paora has been working with Schwede66 on inserting family trees for relevant New Zealand families see example Category:Elworthy family. He has also been doing general gardening of content and creating a new article for the position of the Chief Coroner of New Zealand.
• Dactylantha works for Auckland War Memorial Museum and has just started their wikipedia editing journey. Very interested in Wikidata but starting with Wikipedia and taking baby steps. For Wikidata and collection information Einebillion suggested getting in touch with Gareth Watkins, Te Papa as a good contact.
• Ambrosia10 has had their peer reviewed paper printed and will receive a copy. They have also continued to work on the Revealing Women in Genera project and ensuring data is in wikidata with their group of core reserachers. A recent presentation was delivered at BIOME2022. Preparing for publication of a paper in a data journal so the data needs to be pristine. A data review is being completed to review the entire dataset to ensure it meets the highest standards. Has also been working on creating education resources for universities in USA.
• David Nind has been working in Wikisource reviewing and transcribing. Has been experimenting with Collection Builder. Also, for those of you that want to use Open Refine but don't want to install the software there is a Wikimedia Foundation cloud project to enable use via the web. Also recommeded editors check out Wikipedia Weekly - a weekly videocast available via YouTube. The videocast recently completed a retrospective session showing all the tools used throughout all the sessions.
• DrThneed has written 4 articles of female professors in New Zealand. Also significantly edited the Olveston (house) article and asked the house staff to review the article for accuracy and provide openly licensed images to no response. Contacted New Zealand universities about the lack of press releases regarding promotion of staff to higher positions. It's difficult to keep Wikidata up to ate otherwise. Also added photographs from the New Zealand Royal Society Awards event, extracted headshots and added them to their Wikipedia article. Still two more awards dinners to go to gather content.
• Einebillion has been working on setting up pages for this meet up and the Wellington meetup, writing reports for the affiliate and a personal report back on the ESEAP conference, and doing more organising and activity work for the committee of the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand Incorporated Society.

5. Review of questions raised during round table

• David Nind demonstrated adding book and edition metadata to the Internet Archive's open library. Doing this work improves the Internet Archive and ensures that book metadata appears appropriately in a reciprocal way.
