Have a read if you are interested in this work.
Round table for participants to say what you’re working on
[edit]- Avocadobabygirl (talk). With Eyeup I ran two editathons about Te Maori at Te Papa. There's a blog up about it now. I've had some great chats with Winnieswikiworld and been chipping in on WikiProject Migrants of Colour Stories Aotearoa, which lines up nicely with WikiProject Aotearoa Asian Artists - I've made articles for Bepen Bhana and Dilohana Lekamge. We've held sessions for staff about Women in Red and fixing bias, which has really grabbed their attention.
- Stitchbird2 (talk) I attended both of the two editathons about Te Maori at Te Papa mentioned above. I enjoyed adding information on birth/death dates, iwi affiliation, and other information about contemporary Māori artists to their Wikidata items and Wikipedia pages (if they had one), for example Elizabeth Ellis. I also attended Avocadobabygirl's Te Papa staff session on Women in Red, creating the article on NZ botanist Margaret J.A. Simpson. Together with User:Ambrosia10 and User:Noracrentiss we have successfully run day 1 of the [NZ species edit-a-thon] held at Ōtari Wilton's Bush on 19 October, with day 2 coming up next Saturday (all welcome). We were 15 people, and an even mix of experienced vs new editors, and it was a brilliant day. Since 15 Sept I've created 3 new pages in English for Ourisia microphylla, Ourisia serpyllifolia and Ourisia polyantha, and as these are South American species, I have used the translation tool to translate them into Spanish, e.g. [Ourisia microphylla].
- Ambrosia10 (talk) 18:03, 25 October 2024 (UTC) attended the two Te Maori editathons and enjoyed them immensely. I learned a lot about the impact of that exhibit and had a great time adding content to articles outside my normal editing sphere. I encourage other editors to take advantage of these events when they can as it is always an opportunity to learn more. As Stitchbird2 has summarised our first New Zealand species editathon went really well and we are well on our way to organising the second event. We recently held the monthly meeting for the BHL-Wiki working group where we got an update on the Internet Archive issues. IA is now again online and as a result so is BHL. I'll update the GLAMwiki newsletter with the meeting highlights. I've been busy with my normal set of projects with progress being made on the Women Genera analysis of data paper, the International Botanical Congress/Annals of Botany paper as well as the paper I'm co-writing for the Hidden Figures CURE. The Bionomia module of that CURE is now in its final stages of being published with it being uploaded to the site and co-authors just giving their final approvals. We're received feedback on the Wikidata module and are now working our way through that feedback before sending it back to the publishers. The end of this project is in sight! I've also been working hard on my Open Education Global keynote with the slides and script being in the final polishing stage. As for editing I've been working on my normal Wikidata mix'n'match datasets, my list of botanists from the International Botanical Congress, creating and enriching articles as well as working on the new book out A guide to the butterflies & moths of Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Einebillion (talk) Attended one of the Te Maori edit-a-thons and the first of the Species edit-a-thon and I worked on topic items. Working mainly on the New Zealand women photographers dataset from Te Papa and adding to it in Wikidata. Have asked Auckland Libraries to release the dataset of photographers and they have declined. Will try again in 12 months. On the President front I've been talking with Creative Waikato and Manutū Taonga making connections. We've also hired our Mar/Comms coordinator, Sophie Sparrow. She starts on Tuesday.
- I also discussed the copyright clause I have in my will waiving ownership in all my creative works. The clause is:
- To the greatest extent permitted by, but not in contravention of, applicable law I HEREBY overtly, fully, permanently, irrevocably and unconditionally waive, abandon and surrender all of my Copyright and Related Rights and associated claims and causes of action, whether now known or unknown (including existing as well as future claims and causes of action) in the creative works in which I hold Copyright or Related Rights:
- (i) in all territories worldwide,
- (ii) for the maximum duration provided by applicable law or treaty (including future time extensions),
- (iii) in any current or future medium and for any number of copies; and
- (iv) for any purpose whatsoever, including without limitation commercial, advertising or promotional purposes.
- I request my trustee to release and distribute the creative works in which I hold Copyright or Related Rights to the public using the Creative Commons Zero CC0 Public Domain Dedication
- Jon (talk) — a busy month, just a bit of copy editing around the bass trombone, serpent, keyed trumpet and cornett from the amazing trumpet books from Sabine Klaus. Got a mention in the September 2024 issue of the Serpent Newsletter for my efforts/sins.
- Marshelec has recently been in Kaikōura and has been working on articles related to the town. Two new articles include: Kaikōura Dark Sky Sanctuary and Whale Trail (New Zealand). In the past month, I have had an article I nominated accepted as a Good Article. See: Bushy Park (New Zealand).
- Wainuiomartian has created an article for the Fahnestock South Sea Expeditions after working on the Whitney South Sea Expedition.
- Gertrude206 Edited pages for artist Lydia Larden and her daughter Ethel Birch with help from the Sarjeant Gallery who had to verify the artist. Photos of Larden's paintings on Commons had to be moved and renamed. Now working on creating pages for composers who’ve won APRA SOUNZ contemporary awards e.g. Michael Norris and Janet Roddick. Enjoyed recent edit-a-thons Te Māori and Species at Ōtari.

Future events
[edit]- If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard July 2024 - June 2025. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
- If you're interested in organising a Wiki event, Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) provides support funding. Contact admin @ wikimedia.nz for more information on how to apply. It's really simple - we promise!

Content Projects that need help
[edit]- Content: New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. There is also a video on how to add thesis to people's pages. This work is ongoing and could use more editors to help out. Mix'n'match dataset.

- Content: WikiProject Aotearoa New Zealand Asian Artist - A project to import and build information on significant Asian New Zealand artists.
Anyone know of or organising any other events or content projects? Note here to let the group know.
Wiki News - add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of
[edit]- GLAMwiki Newsletter: [1] has New Zealand and other information that might be of interest to Wellington editors.
- Wikimedia Commons structured data - depicts statement. A new script has been created by TiagoLubiana to help those adding depicts statements to Wikimedia commons files. You install it to you Wikimedia Commons common.js page. See Ambrosia10's common.js page here. You add the following line to your common.js page:
importScript('User:TiagoLubiana/hasDepicts.js');
- This then installs an on/off box for the tool when you are in a Wikimedia Commons category and when the tool is switched on it will show either a green or red dot beneath each file in a particular category showing you which files have depicts statements.
Outcomes
[edit]- Here is the Wikipedia Task Centre
