Agenda and Notes from Meeting
[edit]1. Introduction to meet up by organisers (if there are any newbies joining us)
[edit]2. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on
[edit]- Marshelec's major work on Wikipedia in the past month has included: a) publishing a substantial new article Wharves in Wellington Harbour (in collaboration with User:Wainuiomartian), (b) supporting a new editor to prepare an article Violet Bowring for publication, (c) creating and publishing a new article Samson Setu (about a New Zealand-born opera singer of Samoan descent). As part of the articles for creation process, in the past 6 weeks Marshelec has assisted in the improvement and publication of the articles: Lloyd Godman, Tom Sainsbury, and Dominic Hoey. Also made significant improvements to Bushy Park Homestead (after staying there last week), Lake Ferry, Mangaweka and Karamea, and made some small contributions to WP:WikiProject New Zealand/Critter of the Week.
- Work for Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand during the month has included preparing presentations on Importance of articles, and a proposed carbon foot print policy for the strategy weekend on 22-23 July, participating in the strategy weekend, commissioning a new online accounting system for WANZ (using Xero), publishing a call for proposals for the planned Wikipedian-at-Large project 2023-24, preparing the final outturns for the General Support Grant 2022-2023, and preparing a draft application to The Wikimedia Affiliations Committee for Chapter status for Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Einebillion (talk) has been contributing to Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) in the last few weeks. I've organised the annual in-person strategy weekend for the Committee of WANZ. This was completed on 22/23 August. I've been recruiting for the Executive Advisor contract position for WANZ. This position closed on 4 August and the recruiting panel is in shortlisting mode. I have also completed the annual general funding report for 2022/23 to Wikimedia Foundation. It's been submitted and once it's been reviewed by WMF staff and approved, it will appear here. I've worked on changing the Wellington meetup page to ensure the headers allow sections to be separately edited and I've negotiated a new meeting space in the library - the room we're meeting in today.
- Wainuiomartian (talk) 19:17, 2 August 2023 (UTC) I created an article on Wharves in Wellington (with Marshelec's help), which has been published. I added lots of photos of wharves to Commons. I've started an article about notable ship visits to Wellington (is this worthy of an article?) and at Marshelec's suggestion I have drafted an article about a flock mill on the Waiwhetu Stream.
- Gertrude206 (talk) has improved the article on Wellington Hospital, New Zealand which led to a field trip to the hospital to find and photograph the stained glass windows in the chapel. Updated Red Mole (theatre company) with references to new film about them. Created a draft article on the University of Auckland Festival Choir + a COI statement.
- Noracrentiss (talk) has been doing WANZ things mainly: attended Strategic Planning Weekend, Committee Minutes and Planning for next meeting, assisting with Executive Advisor selection process. And actually did a tiny bit of Mix and Match(ing) on the Turnbull 2 Names!
- Stitchbird2 (talk) 10:54, 4 August 2023 (UTC) I have completed 10 more Myosotis species pages in Wikipedia! This means I have now achieved my goal (drum roll please) of creating pages for *all* 65 southern hemisphere forget-me-not species and subspecies! It is a big milestone and one I was hoping to achieve before Wikimania (phew). As usual this means I also added quite a few scientific papers and people to Wikidata in the process. I also substantially edited two WP:WikiProject New Zealand/Critter of the Week species articles, and convinced one iNaturalist user to make his 14,000 iNaturalist observations and images CC BY! I edited pages of NZ mountaineer Peter Graham (botanical collecting legacy) and entomologist Richard Siddoway Bagnall (biography). Finally I've been helping Avocadobabygirl get organised for our talk at Wikimania.
- Avocadobabygirl - I've been working on a project manual for GLAMs to do contained, sustainable projects releasing a combination of images and knowledge, which Stitchbird2 and I will be presenting at Wikimania. I've also been working with Porrhothele on his arachnids project. We're also making good progress replacing Te Papa's Mix n Match set so (eventually) all our people records will be linked up with Wikidata.
- Chocmilk03 (talk). Looking forward to Wikimania, at which I will now (briefly!) be joining Rosiestep and Lajmoore for a presentation about organising Women in Red events as part of the WikiWomen Summit, which is very exciting. Since our last meeting I've created a few articles including Margaret Frankel (founding member of artist's collective The Group), Annie Julia White, Terry Sturm and Davina Porter.
- Jonathanischoice has been reviewing one article White Diamonds as there is an improving to good article drive on at the moment. Also helping Marshelec with a dam article.Updated brass instruments articles looking at expired US patents and reproducing images of valve types.
3. Progress on Action Points and future events
[edit]- Don't forget to add your program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page.
- New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. There is also a video on how to add thesis to people's pages. This work is ongoing and could use more editors to help out.
- Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10
- 2023 Annual Wikidata Fellowship Grant Wikimedia Australia in partnership with Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand announced their 2023 Wikidata fellows Alistair Kwan, Brodie Hoare, and Mike Dickison.
- 2023 August 16-19 Wikimania, Singapore and online A number of the Wellington group have received scholarships to travel.
- Parliamentary Library The library has had it's Wikipedia guidance for staff approved. They are in the process of developing their project. Possible workshop and training might eventuate. Pakoire and Giantflightlessbirds met with the librarians. There is a block on the IP address so Giantflightlessbirds is working to have this lifted. Momentum starting to build.
4. Aotearoa Pasifika performance ~ DRESS REHEARSAL 12 AUG ~ 11am - 11.30am
[edit]The Pasifika group who are going to Wikimania Singapore invite you to our dress rehearsal Saturday 12 August at 11am location TBC. You will get to see what we have been up to, and we get an audience. We'd love your feedback. It is 30 minutes long.
This is the current blurb: "A cutting edge showcase that weaves multiple disciplines within Pacific arts. As proud descendants of Te Moana Nui-A-Kiwa, a group of young artists from Aotearoa, New Zealand, illustrate the distinct voices of Tonga, Samoa, and Niue, through traditional and contemporary visuals, movement and song." Pakoire (talk) 21:30, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
5. Good Article / Featured Article Work
[edit]Focus article is: Matiu / Somes Island
Wainuiomartian nominated the article for Good Article status. The GA review of the article commenced on 29 May, but stalled after the reviewer became inactive. See:Talk:Matiu / Somes Island/GA1. We have reset the GA review process and are now waiting for another editor to start afresh and agree to take on the review. We have asked for volunteers in a post on the WikiProject New Zealand page, but no offers so far.Marshelec (talk) 08:11, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
