[edit](The afghan is the unofficial biscuit of Wikimedia Aotearoa.)
Kia ora Lisa; I just wanted to thank you for all your hard work organising the (rapidly pivoted) performing arts edit-a-thon on Saturday, and for introducing so many people the the world of Wikipedia. It's really paying off in terms of articles created and getting institutions to consider their Wikimedia strategy. Good on you. [edit]Kia ora, I've created a link for the International Women's Day event here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:WPNZmeetups Essentially all you do is edit the table by clicking on the E in the top left of the table, go to the bit you want to insert a new page link, then copy the code for the previous page, update the information for your new page and save and it creates a red link for you to edit. Autopatrolled granted
[edit]Hi Pakoire, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. However, you should consider adding relevant wikiproject talk-page templates, stub-tags and categories to new articles that you create if you aren't already in the habit of doing so, since your articles will no longer be systematically checked by other editors (User:Evad37/rater and User:SD0001/StubSorter.js are useful scripts which can help). Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Schwede66 01:55, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Getting the arts "wiki-fied"

I have brought the attention of the article to Women in Red but have not given your user name as it is not included on your user page. can you help?
[edit]At this edit to Don Selwyn, you added a new paragraph that includes this {{cite book}}
template:
{{Cite book |last=1945- |first=Smythe, John, |url=http://worldcat.org/oclc/474403154 |title=Downstage upfront : the first 40 years of New Zealand's longest-running professional theatre |date=2004 |publisher=Victoria University Press |isbn=978-0-86473-489-1 |oclc=474403154}}
- 1945-, Smythe, John, (2004). Downstage upfront : the first 40 years of New Zealand's longest-running professional theatre. Victoria University Press. ISBN 978-0-86473-489-1. OCLC 474403154.
{{cite book}}
:|last=
has numeric name (help)CS1 maint: extra punctuation (link) CS1 maint: multiple names: authors list (link)
- 1945-, Smythe, John, (2004). Downstage upfront : the first 40 years of New Zealand's longest-running professional theatre. Victoria University Press. ISBN 978-0-86473-489-1. OCLC 474403154.
Can you tell me how you created that citation? There are a couple of issues with it:
|last=1945-
–1945-
is not an author surname so does not belong in|last=
|first=Smythe, John,
–Smythe, John,
is not the author's given name
I would be surprised if you created this citation manually so that suggests that you used a tool to create it so I filed a bug report because visual editor (which you apparently used to make the overall edit) should not have created this broken citation. How did you create the citation?
—Trappist the monk (talk) 20:18, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hi - I typed the title of the book in the automatic citation field and then picked the book which came up as an option. Pakoire (talk) 18:15, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks
[edit]Thank you for the "Thanks" re: Sabine Marcelis article --> WiR. I didn't actually originate the article (thanks go to Electriclamb for that), although I did contribute quite a bit of what's now there. I also added her name to this conversation, which is what resulted in the article being moved to mainspace (by MrsSnoozyTurtle). There may be other subjects in the thread that interest you (and there's a very active community of good editors exchanging thoughts and advice too) — if it's not something that you already read. Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 07:15, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
PS: I also nominated Sabine Marcelis article for DYK.
PPS: Article appeared in March 15, DYK selection!

Te Pouhere Kōrero
[edit]Kia ora Pakoire. Thanks for creating Te Pouhere Kōrero - nice work. I linked it this morning to Aotearoa New Zealand's histories an article I created a while back and thinking we need to update the Activities section on Te Pouhere Kōrero to reflect this important response to the new curriculum. I will have a look at this and begin to archive some of the citations. Keep up the good mahi! Realitylink (talk) 21:45, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks and great Realitylink. I just created an article for Haeata Māori Women arts collective. I also want to do one for Ngā Puna Waihanga, the Māori Artists and Writers Society that was founded in 1973. I am not sure which name to use as the article title? The Te Reo or the English or both? Do have any thoughts? Pakoire (talk) 20:08, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
- Ah well we all know the current controversies off-Wikipedia in Aotearoa about bilingual signage etc....but hei aha! Personally I love te reo being clearly visible. Not sure what the Wikipedia policy is, but why not just put the whole title as Ngā Puna Waihanga, the Māori Artists and Writers Society? Or what I have also seen: title - Ngā Puna Waihanga then in the introductory section add: also known as The Māori Artists and Writers Society. A good point to raise. Also, are you familiar with the process of reflisting citations? It just means that the full reference lives below in a modified reference section and only the name is shown in the source editing window? Then obviously the name can just be used again if required. It makes editing much easier. I can go and do a couple for you? And note, that others can still add references as they usually would - the two systems happily co-exist. Just a thought I had while thinking about archiving which is becoming a passion for me these days! Ngā mihi Realitylink (talk) 21:15, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Realitylink thanks for your thoughts. Yes please show me a couple of examples! I don't edit in source though if this is why it is good? Pakoire (talk) 22:43, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, so probably not a big deal then if you don't use source editing...(I do all the time except when doing a final proofread). Anyway, I have reflisted the first citation, so have a look in source editing. Certainly not mandatory to do this. I work with a group of editors who do it. All good.Realitylink (talk) 23:59, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
- Yep, so I see the problem if you only edit in visual, when you click on a reference after it has been reflisted, it shows Generated from: R So no use really I guess. Well, you learn something every day here!Realitylink (talk) 00:20, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi Pakoire,
I've just added a small section on Te Ao Māori to the Māori culture article, but - being a typical clueless pākehā - I've probably got the details of the exact meaning slightly wrong. I see you've done quite a bit of work on the article so could you please look over what I've done and amend if needed? Ngā mihi! (PS - I'm also posting a similar comment to User:Paewiki, who's a go-to person for me on Māori WP matters)
Grutness...wha? 07:28, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know. There is a lot of thinking around the use of the two terms Māoritanga and Te Ao Māori and they are both used a lot in various contexts so having them in the article is valid. Are there references you got the statements from?
- If you can please add some references to your article additions, ideally citing Māori scholars and leaders for any information about Māori culture. Pakoire (talk) 22:44, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Of course. Been busily hunting for some that would confirm what I wrote. Grutness...wha? 03:18, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Grutness great. If I come across anything relevant I'll put it on the article talk page and ping you :) Pakoire (talk) 03:56, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay
[edit]Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.
Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Troubling edits on Lingua Franca, about te reo
[edit]Kia ora Pakoire
Sorry to bother you, I'm an IP editor who had edited seldom, but I was recently concerned to see changes made to a description of te reo Māori as a historical lingua franca on the page Lingua franca, by an editor called "Roger8Roger". He deleted the initial passage, describing it as an "offtopic agenda based rant with nothing about the topic. No evidence to show a language called classical maori [sic] ever existed." He then made a lengthy comment on the talk page about it, in which he stated "If you don't already know, as part of the Maori Renaissance in NZ, there is a widespread promotion of all things to do with Maori culture and language, a project enthusiastically adopted by certain sections of society prone to such causes. This subsection is an example... Maori were illiterate until European arrival in the late 18thC". I felt worried that he is pushing an agenda here. His tone is quite nasty - and the statement about Māori being "iliterate" makes about as much sense as criticising the Romans for not being able to drive.
He removed one source from Te Ara describing Māori spoken before English overtook it by number of speakers, claiming it wasn't good enough. He also took issue with Māori being described as a lingua franca at all, claiming it simply wasn't, and it was simply "some Europeans used Maori with varying levels of fluency to communicate with the locals, such as in barter and by Church missionaries..."
This goes against an abundance of source both in this passage about Māori and ones I later found myself. A few of which are here, here,, here, here and here.
I feel as if an experienced editor should take over, maybe? What should happen next? I'd be grateful for any advice. 222.152.26.228 (talk) 00:02, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
DYK for Mussel Inn
[edit]On 23 March 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mussel Inn, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the proprietor of the music venue the Mussel Inn (pictured) in Onekaka built tables strong enough for up to eight people to dance on? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Mussel Inn. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Mussel Inn), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

WiR #1woman1week
[edit]Hi there, Pakoire, and thank you for your active participation in one biography a week from January to March. As far as I can see, you actually created ten new biographies during the period and therefore did not quite achieve the minimum of at least one per week. I hope you will continue to participate from April to June. Your detailed biographies are in any case much appreciated. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 07:36, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
