Replaceable non-free use File:1946 peace 1.2d 300px.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:1946 peace 1.2d 300px.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Vanjagenije (talk) 23:54, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, the same user is bugging me as well. It's a shame that they don't seem to be capable of actually reading the free-use rationale. You might want to follow the links from my talk page to how I've responded to those deletion nominations. Schwede66 08:03, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that your files have been deleted and the same has happened to me. Should we ask for a deletion review? Should we touch base via conference call to align our ducks? Schwede66 00:23, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Future West Coast plans

[edit]

Kia ora Mike, hope you're doing well. I just wanted to touch base quickly to see whether you've got any further plans for West Coast-related events this year? I'm sure you're aware of the WPNZ National parks collaboration, and I was wondering whether there would be an opportunity to align the two projects by focusing on West Coast national parks at the same time as your event is going on. This worked well with Kahurangi National Park earlier in the year and could help prevent duplication of resources - no stress though if you haven't got anything planned, we can just try and improve those articles independently! DYK for Richard Washbourn

[edit]

On 28 March 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Richard Washbourn, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Rear Admiral Richard Washbourn bought the bell of HMS Chevron for £8 and donated it to Collingwood School? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Richard Washbourn. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Richard Washbourn), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Recent Aotearoa New Zealand meetup

[edit]

Hi ya, just thought I'd let you know of a discussion point that came up at the recent meetup suggesting a topic to be raised at Wikicon 2025. See the discussion on the review of questions raised during the roundtable. Ambrosia10 (talk) 02:35, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uncertain genera placement

[edit]

Kia ora Mike, do you know much about moving genera in GBIF and other databases? I've just made an article on the genus Alloecentrella, which based on papers from 2007/2008 should be in the family Helicophidae. This isn't recognised in many major databases (GBIF, iNaturalist, NCBI, ITIS), but is on others (IRMNG, NZOR, Manaaki Whenua). Do you have any experience in making changes like this (and if it's appropriate to change genera structure in Wikidata if it's different on GBIF)? --Prosperosity (talk) 03:11, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Christchurch Meetup - September 1st

[edit]

Hello, in case you are interested, fellow Ōtautahi-based Wikipedians are planning to have a meetup at The Pedal Pusher restaurant in Addington on September 1st at 6pm. If you are interested in attending please see the event page for more details. Hope to see you there! David Palmer//cloventt (talk) 01:05, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ngā Wai Hono i te Pō

[edit]

The name is tricky - its use is so variable. I'm not sure about the capital for 'te'. 'Te' ('the') is not normally capitalised in title case. Nurg (talk) 02:03, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've discussed name issues with another editor too - User talk:TheLoyalOrder#Nga wai hono i te Po. Nurg (talk) 02:05, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Death of Tuheitia

[edit]

Kia ora! I just wanted to leave a message. I’m concerned that the page I started for the Death and tangi of Tuheitia will be deleted. The reasoning is that the page does not include enough detail and could be simply merged. I haven’t finished writing the page - it still needs a lot of work regarding the tangi - but deleting it I think would be a very poor idea. The events of the King’s death and tangi were of major national significance, being the first Māori monarch’s tangi to be nationally televised, and that it reached a wide audience within New Zealand. I also am concerned that articles on events significant to Māori, like this one, will get deleted, and what that means for Māori engagement with Wikipedia (which is low). Dhantegge (talk) 10:13, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've added my suggestion on the Talk page. Bear in mind nobody's talking about deleting information; pages are merged and split all the time, it's all about what works best for presenting information clearly for the average international reader (the person we're doing all this work for, after all). Worst case, the content in Death of Tūheitia will be merged back into Tuheitia, then, when you've continued to expand it, split out again. Which is a wee bit of extra work but not a big deal in the long run. Note that many editors from other countries have their own concerns and increasing the visibility of Māori in Wikipedia is a long way down that list, so appealing to the importance of representation or increasing Māori engagement won't be very effective in changing their minds. It's best to stick to arguments from Wikipedia policy that everybody agrees on: notability criteria as set out in Wikipedia:Notability (events), the guidelines for when topics are split off into stand-alone pages WP:PAGEDECIDE, and so forth. Also it can be a good idea to start by expanding a section in an already-existing article, then, when that content is so voluminous that it overshadows the rest of the article, post a Talk page message suggesting it be split off—at least until someone else improves the other sections to match it—wait for responses, then split off the new article. That's less likely to get push back from other editors, and won't put you in the position of defending the significance of an article that's not finished yet. Anyway, good work, and keep it up. — Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 11:49, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fensham Reserve

[edit]

Kia ora. Thanks for photos of Fensham Reserve you took back in 2020. I visited the reserve in February this year, and have finally got around to writing a new article. I have put one of your photos into the article. See: Fensham Reserve. Ngā mihi _Marshelec (talk) 21:54, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh that's excellent—glad to see those photos came in handy. Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 04:56, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to Present Wikisource at CSIR Event on November 22nd

[edit]

Dear User:Giantflightlessbirds,

I hope this message finds you well. I am User:Mwintirew, and I had the pleasure of attending your session on Wikisource at the Knowledge Beyond Boundaries event last year in Singapore.

I’m reaching out because we, Global Open Initiative are organizing an event with the Institute for Scientific and Technological Information (INSTI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Ghana, and I believe your expertise would greatly benefit our participants, who are primarily librarians and researchers. We would be honored if you could present Wikisource to them and guide them on how they can contribute their research and collections to the platform.

The event is scheduled for the 22nd of November, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM UTC. I realize this is on relatively short notice, so please let me know if you're available, and we can discuss the details at your earliest convenience.

Thank you for considering this invitation, and I look forward to your response.

Best regards, Mwintirew (talk) 14:23, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Akaroa

[edit]

For your position at large you could get in touch with Linda Wallace at Akaroa Museum. Might also be worth talking to the Friends of the Akaroa Museum (FOAM) whose members might have capacity or interest to volunteer with Wikipedia. David Palmer//cloventt (talk) 04:26, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Great minds think alike! I've already had a chat with Linda, and will be heading to Akaroa in a few weeks for a day of meetings; will suggest working with FOAM (great name) and recruiting some editors. Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 09:32, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Avondale photos

[edit]

Hi Mike, are you ever in the Burwood/Avondale area? I stumbled across the article for Avondale, Christchurch recently, and I was surprised to see that the only photos of the suburb are from the 2011 earthquake. As far as I can see, this is the only suburb in Christchurch where the only photos are earthquake related (though I only checked the eastern ones). --Prosperosity (talk) 00:24, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Curiously enough, I grew up in Burwood/Avondale, and it's not far away. Quite a lot of Avondale is grassy Red Zone these days, but I'm sure I could take some photos of both suburbs this coming weekend. Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 06:38, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Got photos of both, upoladed, and added to Wikidata and the articles. Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 17:18, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Amazing, thanks for that! Prosperosity (talk) 00:02, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
