WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

A fox for you!

I cam across a number of your articles while working on Trade unions in Chad, Trade unions in the Republic of the Congo and appreciate your efforts to counter systemic bias on enwp. I enjoyed reading your User:page and would love your suggestions and editorial lens on some of my recent article creations.

Hi Shushugah, many thanks! --Soman (talk) 22:36, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just came across one of your DYKs (and you might update the total on your user page!) and I'm so impressed by your consistent and notable, politically fascinating contributions. I watched Here Comes Tobor and made a few edits on the article, too. Keep up the good work! ProfGray (talk) 02:39, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your reverts of "Communist Party of XXX" INCDAB pages

[edit]

Hi, you re-installed 3 WP:INCDAB pages, which make them show up in Category:Disambiguation pages with (qualified) titles for likely cleanup. I do believe that at least Communist Party of Bangladesh (disambiguation) is already extremely short, and Communist Party of Nepal (disambiguation) isn't bad either (although, yes, it could be sectioned up for better readability/navigation). Either way, none of the 3 INCDAB pages are (as you see it) "legit dab pages" per WP:Disambiguation. What is your stance? :-) – sgeureka tc 12:24, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The use of "(M-L)" or similar in names of various communist parties is not a disambiguation, it is a proper part of the names. A dab page for Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist-Leninist) makes sense, because it links parties with identical (rather than similar) names. --Soman (talk) 09:53, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Then I stand corrected; I had already noticed that CPI (ML) was probably legit and didn't touch that. Thank you for your time. – sgeureka tc 08:05, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for State Publishing House of Ukraine

[edit]

On 17 September 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article State Publishing House of Ukraine, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that 1920s belles-lettres books published by the State Publishing House of Ukraine (symbol pictured) sold out more rapidly than similar books published elsewhere in the Soviet Union, despite the higher average price? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/State Publishing House of Ukraine. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, State Publishing House of Ukraine), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Why are you clearing ideology sections

[edit]

you have removed like, a LOT of the ideologies from party infoboxes, and the reason from what I could find seems to be... none at all... Can you explain please? 🤓 WeaponizingArchitecture | scream at me 🤓 11:54, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure how far back into my editing history you're looking, but en bref: there are some inherent problems with infoboxes of political parties on Wikipedia. It appears that stuff like 'ideology' and left-right 'position' is a low-hanging fruit for many junior editors, who repeatedly add or modify entries based on feelings or perceptions.
A common issue is to confuse 'ideology' with various policies that a party may espouse at a given moment. The ideology of a political party would be its core values. Thus the drives to add stuff like 'soft Euroskepticism' as ideology for a lot articles is misleading, as in most cases policy positioning on EU matters would not necessarily be a core identity of most European parties. Likewise, if you like to argue that a political party would the 'Russophilic' then the burden of proof would be heavier than just pointing to (and interpreting) a policy statement. We rarely come across clear-cut and ambiguous third party references to fit political parties into neat categories, there is almost always some ambiguity and interpretation. As such, when in doubt, it is a better rule of thumb to stick to broader categorization schemes as opposed to being exhaustive in listing all possible labels.
Having said that, in the past weeks in particular I've reverted a lot of edits of an anon IP editor (the guy behind edit drives like this, although appears with many different IPs), who repeatedly adds outright false claims to political party infoboxes. For example look at the edit history of Wesh Zalmian, which is essentially a case of WP:HOAX. --Soman (talk) 21:22, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Remove Socialism and Anti-capitalism in CPI(M)

[edit]

Remove Socialism and Anti-capitalism in CPI(M). Communism and Marxism-Leninism itself represents socialism and anti-capitalism. No need to mention it seperately. Commie Eagle (talk) 15:21, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
