Control copyright icon Hello Stitchbird2! Your additions to Myosotis matthewsii have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 14:15, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Diannaa, Thank you very much for your message. I am sorry this happened! I wrote the original article and made an error in not paraphrasing the content I wanted to add to Wikipedia sufficiently. I will attempt to ensure this doesn't happen again. I am going to check the other Myosotis pages I've created recently for Wikipedia to make sure original content is paraphrased sufficiently.
Stitchbird2 (talk) 23:41, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I've been trying to figure out exactly what part of the article breached copyright by comparing versions, but I just can't see it. Could you please let me know what it was so I can correct it here and also for future reference in avoiding similar paraphrasing mistakes again. Thank you.

Did you know ...

[edit]

... that another editor has nominated your good work for DYK?

There's nothing for you to do, unless you want to get involved. Your user name is on the nomination because you wrote the article. When you produce quality work like that, you could nominate that for DYK yourself. It'll then get some Main Page exposure, where items usually get a few thousand views while there. Pretty cool, eh? Once the nomination gets closed (you'll see what I mean when that happens), you'll find your work in the "queue". From the table at the top of that page, you can work out when the item will be on the Main Page. And at the appointed time, you can celebrate that with friends, colleagues, and fellow editors.

If you want to get into DYK yourself, let me know and I can give you a hand. I once gave a presentation how DYK works. The first five nominations are "free"; after that, it's expected that you review another nomination for each further nomination from yourself. Schwede66 04:13, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Myosotis pansa subsp. praeceps

[edit]

On 2 January 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Myosotis pansa subsp. praeceps, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that one threatened species of plant (pictured) endemic to the North Island of New Zealand is colloquially known as a forget-me-not? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Myosotis pansa subsp. praeceps. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Myosotis pansa subsp. praeceps), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

[edit]
Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Selection and placement of images in articles

[edit]

Further to discussions, here is guidance about placement, including avoiding sandwiching text between left and right side images:MOS:IMAGELOC. Further guidance is given here: WP:IMGPLACEMENT. However, I note that in this second reference, there is a sentence "Some subjects easily lend themselves to image-heavy articles for which image galleries are suitable, such as plants (e.g., Lily), ". Going to the article Lilium, there is a section that includes multiple galleries: Lilium#Classification_of_garden_forms. This article seems to be a good exemplar._Marshelec (talk) 00:52, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I've fixed this now. Stitchbird2 (talk) 07:07, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The article you created has a contradiction. In the lede you write that the plant "is listed as Threatened - Nationally Critical." In the body and infobox, it is listed as Not Threatened by NZ TCS. Could you fix or source the lede statement? Thanks, --Classicwiki (talk) If you reply here, please ping me. 06:12, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I see the information might be copied over from Ourisia macrocarpa based on your edit summary saying you used that article as the template. It might just be those two sentences in the lede, but could you do a thorough review and make sure nothing else was copied over accidentally as well? --Classicwiki (talk) If you reply here, please ping me. 06:17, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Patar knight. I noticed that you have been adding short descriptions to articles. However, the short descriptions you added are too long to be effective, such as at Rae Natalie Prosser de Goodall. The guideline is that short descriptions should ideally be under 40 characters long, and no longer than needed. For more information, see the short description guidelines. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you. -- Patar knight - chat/contributions 14:24, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
