The Meeting

[edit]

Socially Anxious or Want to meet a Friendly Face first?

[edit]

We know it can be difficult for some people to walk into a group of strangers without knowing anyone. If you'd like to meet up with a friendly face before the meeting or to have a chat to see if this group is for you please contact Dianne on info @ wikimedia.nz Dianne will be overjoyed to introduce you to one of the group who will be available to meet up with you for coffee and chat. They can also be on hand to meet you prior to the meeting and walk in with you and introduce you to the group. Whatever will make you comfortable.

Round table for participants to say what you’re working on

[edit]
1) Getting back up to date with Critter of the Week, editing four species for 2024 Powelliphanta superba, Neochanna diversus, Kalotermes brouni, Tachysphex nigerrimus (plus associated Wikidata stuff and using iNat2Wiki tool[1] to import images to Commons and use in Wikipedia).
2) User:Ambrosia10 and I continue to meet fortnightly with international colleagues including some from Wikimedia Spain to plan our Wikidata workshop at the upcoming International Botanical Congress. I am helping User:Ambrosia10 disambiguate several important botanists associated with this conference.
3) I took User:Pakoire's idea from last month's meetup to heart and have a goal of creating one plant species page per week! This month I've done four NZ native Plantago species pages (start or C class): Plantago aucklandica, Plantago triantha, Plantago triandra, Plantago obconica.
4) I'm helping User:marshelec compile a list of plants endemic to Kahurangi National Park (with citations, and making sure references are in Wikidata) .
5) I've made some other Wikipedia edits of scientists (e.g. Mary Sutherland), and Wikidata edits to their scientific stuff like papers, prizes and places e.g. Mary Sutherland, The Ian Wards Prize, The Michael Standish Prize, Colin J. Webb, the Auckland Islands, among others.
  • Porrhothele Te Papa has uploaded data on to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata on Te Papa's spider and harvestmen type specimens. Porrhothele has been working on adding Wikipedia pages using this specimen data and images. Completed work on one genus. Still learning to edit.
  • Little_Cat_x is a new editor and has been working on background research to update New Zealand endemic species.
  • CopperAlchemy has been working on updating WANZ events page. She has hit her first 100 edits. She's also been working on the Erskine College article. Administration work for WANZ has included contributing to events management with the Photography event and the WikiCon.

Future events

[edit]
If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
If you're interested in organising a Wiki event, Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) provides support funding. Contact admin @ wikimedia.nz for more information on how to apply. It's really simple - we promise!
This is the link to register for the event at our ticket provider Humanitix
Please note there is a $NZ10 booking fee for the event. The organising group will be applying for funding to cover the catering and other costs and keep the conference affordable. The cost of the Conference dinner is not included in registration.
Presentations and workshops will be held in two classrooms at the Auckland University of Technology, Sir Paul Reeves WG Building, 2 Governor Fitzroy Place, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010.
Scholarship funding to cover travel and accommodation information is on the event page. Link above.
  • 9 March & 13 March 2024 Photography and Wikimedia Commons Event Currently timetabled for 1 - 5pm at Photospace at 37 Courtenay Place, Wellington .Quilt Phase's WANZ funding application successful. More information to come.

Outstanding Action Points to Progress

[edit]
  • Otari-Wilton's Bush event ideation and organising We need an organiser! Group agreed to move the dates to autumn. User:Noracrentiss will talk with User:Ambrosia10 about organising resource. WANZ application could easily include an event organiser but we need someone to lead it and shape the agenda of the event. - Next steps?
  • Parliamentary Library The library has had its Wikipedia guidance for staff approved. Any update on support for project? User:Giantflightlessbirds was organising a lifting of the IP address block on editing Wiki projects. Any update?

Good Article / Featured Article Work

[edit]

Wiki News - add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of

[edit]
  • Content: New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. There is also a video on how to add thesis to people's pages. This work is ongoing and could use more editors to help out.

Questions and Requests for Assistance

[edit]

The group of editors broke into groups with a natural environment group helping build the knowledge of Little_Cat_x, a group to look at the Mozart Fellowship list page that has a notice put on it by another editor, and a group to talk about the Dashboard for the Photography event.
