Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference

[edit]

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

The video conferencing meetup is a replacement for the in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link in the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Agenda and Notes from Meeting

[edit]

1. Introduction to meet up by organisers (if there are any newbies joining us)

2. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on

  • Giantflightlessbirds Attended the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand Incorporation meeting as did the other attendees of this meeting. See Incorporation Also working with Left Bank Gallery in Greymouth. They have good representation of pounamu carving and trying to exhibit it. Working on a Creative NZ grant pitch for a catalogue, exhibition, and book. Looking for openly licensed images. Attending Wikidata morning presentations. Also reported on the workshop on Wikidata-based infoboxes in Commons this morning at the Wikidata Reuse conference.
  • Gertrude206 Uploaded protest photographs. One day I would like to learn pattypan to automate bulk uploads. Petticoat Pioneers book - working through that book to add to women’s wikipedia entries.
  • Marshelec Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand inc work including setting up a bank account with KiwiBank, role descriptions and standard operating procedures drafting. Western petrel work is next. Helping an editor on energy article on Turkey to GA is also being worked on.
  • Ambrosia10 National Herbarium of Victoria. Workshop went well on Wikidata and Binomia workflow but delivery over video conference was difficult. No one wanted to make themselves vulnerable. A lot a people edited wikidata but Siobhan spent a lot of time cleaning up afterwards. Didn’t go onto Binomia as next step. Other thing she’s been working on is DigiCol Norwegian conference. 20 minute presentation. It’s a citizen science event. Main people will be archives and library people. Also working with international botanists on plant genera named after women in a peer reviewed article / main author looking at presentation at international botanist conference. Working with Tamsin on NZ thesis project into Wikidata. Tamsin is doing the majority of the work. Also working on Hudson 1928 watercolour illustrations of NZ moths. Now cropping each moth individually and making sure its not just name from publication but also current name, creating and adding category, adding to wikipedia pages and wikidata pages and then adding it into iNaturalist when no images exist. There is a photographer openly licensing images and using this workstream to id and taking images.
  • Oronsay Had a pause and only created one bio since our International Women’s Day takeover. Have done a bit of work on cleaning up the New Zealand new articles. Awarded the Precious award - this can be seen on the talk page. Very pleased about this. Had an article as the leading DYK with pic and also had a recent death articles on the front page. Really helped out by other editors. Have question about NZ pages (below).
  • Jonathanischoice Trombone articles. Got into an argument about style superscript characters. Use Unicode! Have you been using the app? Its gamified a bit of work which is interesting. Short descriptions, image captions etc. Leaving a couple of battles behind.
  • Einebillion working on ATL mix n match sets. Also doing some work at Te Papa as part of my employment there. Looking at setting up a GLAM page to document staff outreach / contributions and setting up editing standards for staff.

3. Progress on Action Points and future events

  • Creation of overarching campaign on the outreach dashboard
User:Ambrosia10 has created the overarching campaign dashboard for the Aotearoa New Zealand User Group for 2022. If you are holding any events or editathons and you create a dashboard for them to track metrics could you please add it to this campaign to make reporting back to the Wikimedia Foundation easier at the end of the year. User:Ambrosia10 has added the joint upcoming #1Lib1Ref event to this campaign as well as the International Women's Day event dashboard to it. - Ambrosia10 (talk)
  • International Women's Day Editathon on weekend of 5 and 6 March How did it go? Any update from Ambrosia10 and Pakoire ?Ambrosia10 Was great! We produced great content. Pakoire did most of the organising and everyone popped in and out.
  • Edit-a-thons at Te Papa Any update from Pakoire or Einebillion ? Not happening due to omicron cases in New Zealand as it was linked to Pakoire Creative New Zealand’s Wikipedia editing project.
  • One Lib One Ref campaign Australia Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand are working on the One Lib One Ref campaign in June. No update
  • New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Any update from DrThneed? There is a meeting next week to keep going on this with the Lincoln University librarian leading the group and DrThneed to demo subset of data. Update from DrThneed: Sorry I missed the meeting, I was playing with thesis data! I've added a sample of 116 theses to Wikidata as a demo, and am seeking feedback this week from librarians and other Wiki editors to check the model is how we want. I have also been working on the main dataset (66.5k dissertations) to tidy things like uppercase titles and resolve a surprising number of duplications. I may end up uploading the main dataset an institution at a time as these issues get resolved.
  • The Postponed Wellington WikiCon Any update from Pakoire or Giantflightlessbirds? Group decided to postpone until the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand Inc. society is fully in business.
  • Visit to Parliamentary Librarians Any update from Marshelec? Pakoire is trying to arrange a meeting to start up the conversation post-protests.

4. Further discussion on getting to Good Article / Featured Article status. Do we want to select another candidate? Considering Westland Petrel or New Zealand Wine article.

5. Wiki News - add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of None.

6. Demonstration of a tool

Group will watch as homework.

7. Get on with problem solving, editing, and chatting

  • Oronsay showed two articles that need more information to include in wikidata structure. This prompted a discussion on demonstrating to editors to engate with Wikidata as an beginner entry into Wikipedia edting.
  • Resolution that our group will engage more with Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Zealand and Wikipedia:New_Zealand_Wikipedians'_notice_board
  • Giantflightlessbirds requested help with the Dave Hansford Photography project. A hard disk of a large photo library has been received. Giantflightlessbirds needs help with importing metadata and bulk import of images. Discussion on bulk copyright permission. Recommendation from others to contact digital archivist / preservation specialists at National Library and Archives NZ as they deal with this sort of format shifting to retain metadata and extracting metadata. Jonathanischoice also offered Python help.
  • Giantflightlessbirds and Jonathanischoice discussed project to update New Zealand maps. May list in WikiProject New Zealand as something to work on due to other work being of higher priority. example. Oronsay advised that WMAU president, Alex Lum (aka User:Canley) is giving talk/demo on mapmaking at April Australian community meeting at which NZers are welcome.
  • Giantflightlessbirds with Caddie from Wikimedia Australia a new GLAMR training program Also noted the usefulness of having a second raw account with no preferences added for training purposes. Has an account called Giantflightlessbirdsdemo for training / demo purposes.
  • Group reviewed Wikipedia User display preference settings in Preferences -> Gadgets and Oronsay demonstrated the usefulness of XTools available in the Appearance section.
  • Jonathanischoice offered help with possible WordPress website for Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand website (see his Pukerua Bay Residents' Association website.
