A meetup event to edit and learn about creating content on Wikipedia held at the Home Of Compassion in Island Bay, Te Whanganui-a-Tara. SATURDAY 8 OCTOBER 11AM – 2PM. What's it about?

In honour of Ada Lovelace Day 2022 we are holding an event to improve the coverage of New Zealand women in Wikipedia. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM). Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that YOU can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia articles. We will offer training so that attendees of all experience levels can learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia enabling attendees to contribute to improving articles on New Zealand women contributing to science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

COVID

To keep everyone safe please follow our COVID health and safety requirements. Our goal is to be a welcoming safe space for people including those with compromised health conditions and to ensure all measures are taken to prevent the spread of COVID and other airborne diseases.

Masks are expected to be worn (by those who can). Please stay away if you sick.

If you are feeling unwell, have any Covid-19 symptoms, were recently in close contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID, or have been instructed to isolate, please do not attend.

Our event will be masked and our expectation is that people will wear a quality N95 or KN95 mask (supplied) at all times apart from when eating or drinking. Those who are unable to wear a mask are also welcome. People eating and drinking will manage their own safety in a variety of well ventilated spaces with the ability to social distance. Masks will be required in the main hall during all the editing sessions.

As a further measure only facilitators who have passed a negative Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) on the day will attend. We will have RAT tests available if participants want to do one.

10.30am – Venue open – come & set up computers etc

11.00am – Event start – Welcome, housekeeping & round table

11.30pm – EDITING – pair up and either learn about Wikipedia or start editing.

1pm – Lunch (catered)

1.30pm – Closing round – what people have learnt & next steps

2pm – Finish or stay and keep editing


Goals:

  • New editors / writers will be trained to make their first contributions
  • Expand information on women in STEAM in Aotearoa on Wikipedia
  • Increase the number and quality of biographies of people who identify as women, indigenous women and women of colour to address the existing bias in Wikipedia.

This event is being hosted by Our Lady’s Home of Compassion – Te Piringa Pūaroha o Te Whaea Tapu and coordinated by Lisa Maule, Siobhan Leachman and Sofia Roberts. Lisa is a Pākehā theatre practitioner who also loves knowledge and research, and uses Wikipedia to increase the coverage of notable women particularly in the performing arts. Siobhan is Pākehā and is an experience editor of Wikipedia with an interest in increasing Wikipedia's coverage of women in natural history. Sofia is also pākehā and works as the Events Coordinator at Compassion New Zealand, and has a background in museums and heritage.

Preparation

  2. Create a Wikipedia account beforehand: best not to wait until the day to do it. Here's a form you can use if you like. Creating an account makes editing much easier (here's more info on why you should). You'll need to pick a "handle" for your username. Here's some advice on picking a username.
  3. Read up on Wikipedia: there are lots of tutorials, like the Wikipedia Adventure, and useful guides, like the Editing Wikipedia brochure.

What to have

  • Resources that can be cited in Wikipedia if you have any – media clippings, books etc
  • Photos to upload (if you own the copyright)
  • A computer is better than a tablet for editing on Wikipedia
