April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Tramaine Isabell, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Garfield High School (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 09:16, 7 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I reverted your edit to Mona, Jamaica because the school is not in Mona. It's in a neighbourhood bordering Mona. The article that you cited does not say that the school is in Mona.–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:08, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

FloridaArmy pages

[edit]

Thanks for the sterling work in cleaning up the articles and moving them back to mainspace. As you may have have noticed from my edit summaries it is mostly a problem with sourcing rather than potential notability that was my main concerns when I draftified them. It is a shame that FloridaArmy did not do this work themselves with each article before moving on to their next creation. That said a certain number of their creations were fine which is why I left them in mainspace. You may consider the ban stupid but as patrollers we have had to deal with a very large number of unacceptable articles pouring into the feed that an experienced editor should not have left in that state. If you have read the noticeboard you will have seen 17 !votes to support the ban and not a single one opposing it. The most frustrating thing was the absence of any reaction from FloridaArmy despite having been asked to comment. The responsibility for this ban lies clearly on his the shoulders. You might want to have a look at my !vote here to also understand what the problems were with his behavior in Afd. Dom from Paris (talk) 22:29, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And you'll find in the long run that the ban will benefit him as well as the rest of the community; he will be forced to become a more considerate and useful editor and may eventually become a valued contributor. Deb (talk) 12:16, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Allow me, please, a small remark: FloridaArmy has not been, so far, a "net positive" in Wikipedia but a huge negative. We are supposed to evaluate Wikipedia as users and not just as editors. A user coming to Wikipedia will encounter an avalanche of poorly written, carelessly sourced articles written by FA. Where's the good or the "positive" in that? The number of the articles FA discharges, and it is a big number, is unimportant and irrelevant. When I look in Wikipedia for subject XYZ, and I come upon a poorly written article about XYZ, it does not matter at all how many other articles the creator of XYZ has created. Quantity is good only if quality is good. Take care. -The Gnome (talk) 10:33, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Here's what I nearly posted in response to their latest replies to RegentsPark on their talk page re: supposed hounding and the Demerara window article.

Your contributions have been tracked by numerous people for a reason, and that reason ultimately led to the recent editing restrictions imposed upon you. Following and cleaning up the edits of an abysmal contributor would be an exception to the rule, for example. I predict that unless your attitude changes soon, you will find yourself prevented from contributing to the project at all. You treat almost everything as a combat between you and everyone else. I am tempted to take you back to ANI right now because things are not really improving. WP:ROPE might be worth a read.

The only reason I didn't is because I am not supposed to post to their talk page. That just means it will end up at ANI without any prior warning from me, although they have previously been told by others that such stuff is not hounding. . - Sitush (talk) 15:55, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Draft:Lizzie Doron requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Hi you moved the above article back to mainspace without making any improvements especially to the sourcing with the comment "Seems notable to me". The trouble is I don't think you took the time to look at the sources enough. The VG article is in-depth coverage but the Kampanje article has a banner at the top of the page that says "Annonsørfinansiert innhold" which means "Advertiser-funded content" and the line at the top where the author's name would be it says "Reklame" which means "Advertising". It's fine to move these articles back but please only do it if you've addressed the sourcing problems and 1 RS is not enough to prove notability. I've tagged it for notability as I don't want to get into a move war. cheers Dom from Paris (talk) 06:06, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

D. J. Hogg moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, D. J. Hogg, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published and may not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines including those for basketball players. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please follow the confirms on the Articles for Creation template atop the page. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 00:46, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:12, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I see that you undid my request to delete an article about me on the basis that the subject of the article is not notable. I wholeheartedly agree that the subject (aka ME) is not notable and should not have a Wikipedia article. The page was created a long time ago under pressure from a former employer. It is no longer relevant, will never be updated and is largely inaccurate. Please delete the page. I will go along with whatever verification process you want to prove I am the subject of the article.

"Asserts notability"

[edit]

While anyone is free to remove a PROD, "Asserts notability" is a rather crappy reason to remove one. PROD is not CSD, which means that the mere assertion of notability is not enough to prevent deletion normally. In at least one case, notability wasn't even the only valid reason for deletion. If you're going to patrol PRODs, please consider leaving a better rationale or actually doing work to see if you think it is notable, rather than just muse that it might be. Notice

The article Isom Butler has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Does not meet WP:NHOOPS. Fails WP:GNG with lack of significant coverage in multiple, reliable, independent sources. Predominantly trivial mentions in sources.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. —Bagumba (talk) 10:02, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Cape May

Hey there! I live in the county, so I like editing about places nearby. That said, do you think all of the properties in Cape May Historic District even need an article? Only Cape May City Hall is needed IMO. There are four redlinks on National Register of Historic Places listings in Cape May County, New Jersey that could be made. Individual properties on the NRHP are a lot easier to create as articles, as their application for the status usually has a ton of information. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:05, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think there is enough information on Mad Batter? I just did a Google search, and this Boston Globe article popped up, but it didn't mention anything of note happening there. Candidates

[edit]

The issue is that candidates are not deemed to pass WP:NPOL just for being candidates — but since every candidate always receives some campaign coverage during the election, if the existence of some campaign coverage were all it took to get a candidate over WP:GNG in lieu of failing NPOL, then there would never be any such thing as a non-notable candidate anymore. Every candidate in every election would always get that "campaign coverage exists" exemption from having to pass NPOL, thus completely disembowelling our notability standards from politicians (which exist for real reasons, including the tendency of politicians to try to hijack their articles as campaign brochures) from actually having any meaning or application at all anymore.

So campaign coverage is not enough all by itself to get a candidate over GNG. There are two ways to make a candidate notable enough for an encyclopedia article without their having to win the election first: either you can show sources which demonstrate that they had preexisting notability for other reasons that would already have gotten them an article independently of the candidacy, or you can show that their candidacy has received so much more coverage than everybody else's candidacies (e.g. the way Alexandria Ocasio Cortez is already a nationally famous figure who's already flying around the country to endorse and campaign for other candidates even before she's actually been elected to anything yet, when it's incredibly unusual for a first-time candidate who's never held office before to already have that much power and national name recognition) that the candidacy has a credible claim to being a special case. "Some campaign coverage exists" is not enough all by itself, because there's no candidate anywhere for whom some campaign coverage ever doesn't exist. Bearcat (talk) 16:30, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that some biographical information can be sourced doesn't make her more notable than other candidates in and of itself, and neither do namechecks of her existence in articles about larger phenomena that she happens to be a part of. For a candidate to attain notability just for being a candidate in and of itself without having to have a stronger notability claim on top of that, the test is not "some sources exist" — it is "sources exist which demonstrate that she's already so nationally megafamous that even if she loses the election this year people will still be looking for an encyclopedia article about her ten years from now anyway". Christine O'Donnell hit that mark, Jon Ossoff hit that mark, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez hit that mark — but the vast majority of candidates don't. Bearcat (talk) 16:50, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Please read WP:ONLYESSAY — essays are not ignorable just because they're essays, because they still represent actual explanations and clarifications of real Wikipedia principles. Essays still have to be taken seriously — the key to rendering an essay inapplicable is not to say "that's just an essay", it's to address substantive reasons why this situation is different from all the other cases where the essay was applied. 10YT is an accurate summary of how Wikipedia tries to evaluate notability — in all human careers, our inclusion criteria are not based on the principle of "who happens to be temporarily newsy today", but on the principle of enduring notability that has valid claim to permanence. And what about the article suggests that Mary Gay Scanlon has accomplished anything that suggests that people will still be looking for an article about her in 2028 even if she loses her election in November? If she wins the seat in November, then the article will obviously get recreated within hours — but what evidence does the article show that she's already earned permanent notability regardless of whether she wins or loses the seat in November? Bearcat (talk) 17:13, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, even settlements don't just need to exist — even WP:GEOLAND requires that a settlement's existence is reliably sourceable to sources which enable us to say more than just "Settlement is a place that exists, the end." But that said, we have to have stricter notability standards for people than we do for inanimate objects, because people are uniquely prone to misusing Wikipedia to promote themselves in an advertorial manner and/or to make attack edits against their enemies. People have reputations that can be harmed if we get stuff wrong, a person can sue us for libel if we make a mistake, people can make false claims about themselves in order to appear more notable than they really are, people can wrap their articles in an advertorialized writing tone that doesn't follow Wikipedia's NPOV requirements, and on and so forth.
The bottom line is, this isn't about my own personal standards at all — Wikipedia has an established consensus that the inclusion standards for people need to be tight, precisely because our open "anybody can edit" structure leaves us incredibly vulnerable to advertorial or attack-editing abuse. We have an established consensus that the inclusion test for politicians is holding a notable office, and not just standing as a candidate for one — and we have an established consensus that because every candidate always gets campaign coverage, and thus every candidate could always claim that they'd passed GNG and were thus exempted from having to pass NPOL, a candidate does not pass GNG just because the expected campaign coverage exists.
You need to keep in mind that across the United States right now, with all the offices that are up for election (Congress, state houses, governor's mansions, cabinet positions, city or county councils, etc.) the number of people who are candidates for something is approaching or possibly even exceeding 50 thousand. Every last manjack or womanjack one of them has received enough campaign coverage to at least attempt the argument that they pass GNG, and are therefore exempted from having to pass NPOL, just because the campaign coverage exists. Most of them are going to lose, turning their candidacy into a WP:BLP1E fail. Then multiply that by the fact that there will be at least as many candidates again in the 2020 elections. Then keep in mind that Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, France, Germany, New Zealand, Japan, India, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Poland and dozens of other countries also have democratic elections with multiple candidates for multiple offices. All of this, remember, in a subject area which requires very special heightened monitoring for NPOV issues, because politicians and their campaign staff regularly try to misuse Wikipedia to whitewash themselves and dirtwash their opponents — meaning that all of this scales far, far beyond Wikipedia's capacity to monitor and manage that risk. So the consensus was established that the base criterion for a politician getting a Wikipedia article is holding a notable office, not just running for one — and while there are rare situations where a candidate might qualify as a special case over and above most other candidates, that doesn't happen just because some campaign coverage exists, because some campaign coverage never doesn't exist: it happens only when the campaign coverage explodes really far out of scope with what every other candidate is also getting. Christine O'Donnell's article, for example, cites 168 distinct footnotes from sources that don't just expand past Delaware, but even expand completely outside the United States into Canada and England, and even the actual senator she lost to doesn't even have a third as many footnotes in his article as O'Donnell has in hers. That's the standard that a candidate needs to match or exceed to have her candidacy deemed to pass GNG in and of itself: not just "some campaign coverage exists", but "so much more coverage exists than normal that she's got a strong claim to her candidacy being special".
And none of this is because I have artificially inflated personal notability standards for politicians — my personal notability standards for politicians are in perfect lockstep with Wikipedia's established consensus, and are not something I made up myself just to be ornery. Bearcat (talk) 18:06, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I endorse what Bearcat wrote above. We have a real problem with campaign brochures masquerading as encyclopedia articles. If we eliminate the existing consensus described above, the problem will immediately get 100 times worse, because professional political campaign staffers will instantly learn that Wikipedia allows campaign brochures. Tens of thousands of terrible articles will flood the encyclopedia. That would do grave damage to Wikipedia's reputation. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:02, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made: you may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Thank you. Dmartin969 (talk) 01:59, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. ArbCom 2018 election voter message

[edit]

Hello, Editorofthewiki. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. DYK for Shannon Evans

[edit]

On 3 December 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Shannon Evans, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the mother, grandparents, and great-aunt of basketball player Shannon Evans (pictured) helped him pay for prep school? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Shannon Evans. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Shannon Evans), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Notice

The file File:Dotless i.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

unused, low-res, no obvious use

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:00, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

[edit]

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 2019–20 VCU Rams men's basketball team, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page St. Christopher's School (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). ArbCom 2019 election voter message

[edit]
Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:10, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

College players

If you are interested in expanding college basketball player articles, please consider adding a college career section to Draft:Grant Riller and Draft:Tyler Bey and/or creating the articles. Sportzeditz (talk) 22:13, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Some more college player articles that I would recommend completing, if you are interested: Draft:Marcus Garrett, Draft:Kristian Doolittle, Draft:Chris Lykes, Draft:Jalen Harris, Draft:Tyrell Terry, and Draft:Quinton Rose (AAC's top career scorer). Terry might not be notable yet but has gained some NBA draft buzz. Sportzeditz (talk) 04:25, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon

Hi. The Wikipedia:The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon is planned for March 2020, a contest/editathon to eliminate as many stubs as possible from all 134 counties. Amazon vouchers/book prizes are planned for most articles destubbed from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and Northern Ireland and whoever destubs articles from the most counties out of the 134. Sign up on page if interested in participating, hope this will prove to be good fun and productive, we have over 44,000 stubs!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:16, 2 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like your thoughts on moving this page out of draft space into an article. Looking at the sources, 7 of the 13 are to a local imprint newspaper with a small circulation. It's hardly surprising the local newspaper would write about him. Indeed, it would be hardly surprising for the local newspaper to write about every player on the team who plays from time to time. Same goes for the local high school teams. I've seen articles deleted before through AfD for over reliance on local media. Three of the remaining sources are to the Atlantic 10 Conference, which while it isn't the school, isn't exactly independent of the subject either. The remaining three sources do not cover the subject in depth, just his performance in games. If this were sufficient for passing notability standards, we'd likely include all college basketball players. Certainly not accusing you of anything, and please don't interpret this as such, but I'd like your thoughts on how this article passes WP:NBASKETBALL and/or WP:GNG? I'm not going to prod it or afd it, I just wanted your input. --Hammersoft (talk) 00:29, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(we can keep discussion in one place)

  • Crutcher is the second leading scorer on a top 10 basketball team. He was named third team all conference last year and will probably be first team or at worst second team this season. He has garnered recognition for hitting clutch shots at the end of games. Taken together he is more notable than the vast majority of college players. If you think it is too reliant on the Dayton Daily News I can find other sources but the local paper is the most comprehensive. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 00:50, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Quinton Rose

[edit]

I know you are a Big 5 guy - Quintin Rose of Temple has a great shot at becoming the AAC all-time leading scorer (he’s only about 20 points behind Rob Gray for that). Either he or Jarron Cumberland of Cincy will end up there. May be worth creating an article for Rose. Rikster2 (talk) 20:05, 8 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Casey Sayles

[edit]

Hi, I saw that you "approved" the inclusion of Jeff Badet to the "main space" because he was playing in the xfl? I tried to add "Casey Sayles" to the main space because he was playing in the xfl and was told that because of WP:NGRIDIRON I could not (see my talk page). Has the rules changed or what other criteria makes one good and the other not good enough for wikipedia? Because both were "only" on nfl practice squads/offseason... Do you have a source that says he ever played a game for the Northwestern varsity basketball team? They don’t list him as a letter winner. Remember, playing for the freshman team (he attended NU before freshman eligibility) doesn’t qualify. If I got this wrong removing the category feel free to revert, it it doesn’t sound like he played for the varsity team. Rikster2 (talk) 22:29, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ngardy Conteh George

[edit]

For future reference, the problem with the sources that led me to flag the article for improvement is that the sources in an article need to always be primarily journalism from media outlets and/or published books, rather than content self-published by herself or organizations or companies that she's been directly affiliated with. A self-written biographical sketch published in PDF form to the website of an organization she's a member of is not a notability-supporting source, the catalogues of film festivals that her films have screened at are not notability-supporting sources, the catalogues of the film studios that she has made films for are not notability-supporting sources, and an alumni profile on the website of a film school she attended is not a notability-supporting source: none of them represent intellectually independent outside analysis about her and her work, which is the kind of sourcing we require to establish that a person is notable.

The thing to remember is that notability is not actually a factor of what the article says the subject did, such that just any website you can find that technically verifies the claim is acceptable even if she wrote it herself — people have been known to lie in their self-created PR about notability claims they don't actually have in reality, so notability is fundamentally a question of how much journalistic attention has or hasn't been independently paid to her achievements by media outlets that don't have a vested interest in her career. To be fair, she obviously has a strong notability claim as a Canadian Screen Award winner, which is why I didn't (and won't) tag it for outright deletion — but having a valid notability claim still doesn't actually eliminate the requirement to base the article on reliable, independent sources rather than her own self-published web presence.

We are allowed to very sparingly use primary sources for very basic biographical facts like her birthdate, but a very clear majority of an article's footnotes have to be real journalism and/or books, not the websites of organizations that are directly involved in the subject's career, before the sourcing can be deemed good enough to no longer warrant an improvement tag. Hope that helps a bit. Bearcat (talk) 22:25, 13 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Primary sourcing doesn't only mean sources that she literally wrote herself; it means any source that is directly affiliated with the statement at all. If she makes a film for the NFB, then the NFB's own self-published directory of its own films on its own website is a primary source for that statement — even though she wasn't personally the author of it, it's a still directly affiliated primary source because it isn't independent of the film. If she's an alumnus of a film school, then that film school's own self-published directory of its own alumni on its own website is a primary source. This is all exactly the same as the reasons why a television journalist doesn't necessarily qualify for an article just because they have a staff profile on the self-published website of the station they work for: their employer is not independent of their career, and thus does not represent independent external attention.
Sources aren't just used to verify information, but are also used to establish notability, and both of those purposes have to be fulfilled before an article is in a satisfactory state. Primary sources can technically verify facts, but they do absolutely nothing whatsoever toward establishing that she would pass WP:GNG for them — only media coverage can do the latter. Notability isn't just a question of verifying facts, it's a question of verifying the amount of independent critical attention that has been paid to their work by external sources. Jason Preston and other second round draft picks

[edit]

Hi there, I removed the team from the infobox at Jason Preston and elsewhere because, as a second round pick, he is not guaranteed and has not signed an actual contract with the team. There is no guarantee that he will and second round draft picks frequently never appear for the team which drafted them. So please refrain from adding this incorrect information back to other articles.--User:Namiba 14:06, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Attribution for articles copied from other wikis

[edit]

Hi. Just a reminder having noticed that you’ve created at least a few dozen articles by copying them from simplewiki but you’ve not provided attribution to the authors. In some cases, you write “simple”, “from simple” or “ok simple” in the edit summary, but this means nothing to most people and isn’t valid attribution under the WM licenses used.

There’s a batch of about 20-30 articles you created like this that each took you a couple of minutes to create while they took me hours and hours to write. Drew Barham

[edit]

Hello,

I was going through a list of American basketball players when I saw the Drew Barham article. I am new to the Prod process so I wanted to ask you before I tagged it. Why did you move it to the main space with no sources on Google or the article to satisfy WP:GNG or really any other notability? He only has one source that is about him in depth, the rest are player bios, game coverage or broken links. I don't mean to offend I truly am just curious if you think it is ok to be tagged, and if not could you explain to me what I have missed? I hope your week went well! Thanks. Hello Editorofthewiki! I am reaching out as you reviewed Paint It Black when it was at FAC. Notice

The article Ross Turnbull (ice hockey) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication or evidence of notability. He apparently had a short and unremarkable career as a hockey player, and didn't play in the NHL.

Voting for coordinators is now open!

[edit]

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election have opened. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting will commence on 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 06:40, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:17, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
