Dean Lavine drops "of Journalism"
[edit]I'm wondering whether perhaps we should change the name of this entry to "The Medill School" given the new dean's changes. Thoughts? nicefriend 17:29, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- I asked Richard Roth and he said it's still the "Medill School of Journalism" officially. Thor Rudebeck 22:45, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Not sure if there are any active followers of this any more, but it begs another obvious question. The 1920-era documents had "Joseph" at the front of its name. The web site now seems to have dropped the "Joseph"? The article name has too. When did that happen? Irony is that the Engineering school has kept the first name of Robert, the same guy who instigated both donations, I think. W Nowicki (talk) 04:11, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:NU seal.png
[edit]The image Image:NU seal.png is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
- That this article is linked to from the image description page.
This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --00:33, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- I replaced it with the Medill logo, trying to use a fair use rationale. Hope that one lasts. W Nowicki (talk) 04:12, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
Medill F
[edit]The Medill F is actually a grade of 50%, not 0. I know this before I go there and have received one, but I can't find an official source. Anybody know of one?Mimzy (talk) 19:20, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
Until a source can be found, the claim sould be removed. I hate to say. for a journalism article, this one is embarassing low quality. W Nowicki (talk) 01:27, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Medill School of Journalism → The Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications — The Northwestern University Board of Trustees officially changed the name of the school on March 11, 2011 (http://www.medill.northwestern.edu/newsreleases/archives.aspx?id=183028). According to Wikipedia naming conventions, "a good title should convey what the subject is actually called in English," which is why I suggest this move. --74.129.169.22 (talk) 01:48, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
- Support assuming it becomes common to refer to the new name.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 14:07, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
- The common name is The Medill School or simply Medill. The Medill School of Journalism is now neither official nor common. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.160.213.2 (talk) 15:30, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
- Wait Thanks for letting us know. The important thing to do is fix the lead and infobox to have the new name, and cite the source as you have done. It is quite common to have the full name spelled out in the lead, while a shorter more common name is the article location (URL title). For example, almost all biography articles have only first and last name, or maybe middle initial as titles, while middle name etc. are filled out in the article. See Bill Clinton for example. Especially reasonable if the article title is an obvious shortening like this. Evidence of the name becoming "common" would be at least one independent source (e.g. not an NU press release) with the expanded name. Even its own web site calls itself "Medill" or "Medill School". With redirects it should not be a critical issue, so I would not object if there is a strong consensus for an early move. It would be consistent with the Engineering school name, for example, which has the full tongue twister. But please keep the Lead section as per style guidelines. For example, do not use Wikipedia as a source by disguising it as a web link. W Nowicki (talk) 17:47, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
- Agree that wait is appropriate. A quick survey of news articles reveals that the new name has, for the most part, only been used in articles criticizing or commenting on the name change itself. It is not on its way to becoming the common name by which reputable sources refer to the institution. Danielklotz (talk) 11:50, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
- Support move to Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, without "The", which should not generally be used in titles and is not even capitalised in the citation provided. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:21, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose. No evidence that this new formal name has or ever will become the common name, in fact we might look at shortening the article name as hinted at above. Andrewa (talk) 03:06, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- Opppse What Wikipedia naming conventions actually say is that we should use the name most recognizable to readers, which may or may not be the offical name. In this case, I see no evidence that the official name, "Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications", is the common name. Dabomb87 (talk) 17:57, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
