Robert McClenon (talk) 14:36, 13 June 2016 (UTC)Welcome to MILHIST
[edit]Hello and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated very frequently. You can watchlist it if you are interested, or you can add it directly to your user page by copying the following: {{WPMILHIST Announcements}}.
- Important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
- The project has several departments, which handle article quality assessment, detailed article and content review, writing contests, and article logistics.
- We have a number of task forces that focus on specific topics, nations, periods, and conflicts.
- We've developed a set of guidelines that cover article structure and content, template use, categorization, and many other issues of interest.
- If you're looking for something to work on, there are many articles that need attention, as well as a number of review alerts.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask any of the project coordinators or any other experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome, and we are looking forward to seeing you around! Anotherclown (talk) 23:30, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

Image adding
[edit]Hi Alice, nice to meet you on Sunday. The image adding exercise I mentioned is at User:WereSpielChequers/image_adding creating similar ones for the Wellcome data should be possible if there is metadata that links them the way geocodes do. ϢereSpielChequers 15:41, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link, I've been clicking around and it's so clever! I was wondering if it would be possible to do something similar in terms of locating articles without images, but perhaps using categories (like this, or this) as the linking factor. Would that work? If it would, would it require a new bot, or is it something that existing scripts can be adapted to do? Thanks again for the example! Zeromonk (talk) 09:33, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
Wellcome to the Jungle!
[edit]Hello Zeromonk, glad to hear the Wellcome Trust has a wikipedian in residence at last. Would any of the articles needed that I have listed at User:Duncan.Hull/Wellcome_Trust_Articles_Needed be in your remit at Wikipedian in Residence? Duncan.Hull (talk) 17:29, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Duncan! Thanks so much for the page and links - I had a meeting with Jonny the other week to talk about this. At the moment, we're just figuring out a) numbers and b) how best to do it (i.e., who to train and what training to provide so that the list continues to be maintained and updated after the residency finishes). When we get something planned, would you be interested in coming down, or in running some parallel editathons in Manchester? Either way, I'll keep you updated! Zeromonk (talk) 08:00, 18 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hello Alice, great. Keep me posted, would be interested in what's happening in London and already organise editathons in Manchester too. Duncan.Hull (talk) 08:51, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Copyright query
[edit]Hi Zeromonk
I need your help to upload an image to Wiki Commons. It is a photo of Caroline Haslett taken in the 1920s/1930s. There are no copyright issues, as far as I know. I've said it is not my work, but I am then asked to fill in a series of questions that baffle me. I know the source, IET Archives, but I don't know the author – can I leave this blank? And which option do I choose from the list below? Thank you. Please could you guide me thru the rest of the process. Thank you! Henrietta999 (talk) 11:00, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Henrietta, If the photo was taken in the 1930s then it could still be in copyright as the photographer could still be alive, or have died in the last few decades. It depends on where it was published and when. Wikimedia Commons would need the photographer to release the file under an open license or for it to be so old as to be in the public domain. You might be able to upload it under Fair Use. You could try asking at Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions or try reading Wikipedia:Plain_and_simple_non-free_content_guide. - @Paste: Hi Paste, thanks for messaging me first! I should have added to the page/talk that she represented Britain and then Canada at the Winter Olympics (and was captain of their ski team in 1936), which I believe secures her notability. Her flying career is remarkable because of the sheer amount of experience she had - few pilots of either gender had flown so many hours or planes at that point in history. 15th November
[edit]Hi, if you need me on the 15th November- I am happy to turn up, the cheap trains arrive at 10:04 at St Pancras- and I walk the last bit.(14 mins) I will see you on Sunday at any rate.
Looking at the Edit-a thon page- there are a few points to consider.
- No time given- often useful.
- If you offer to register users on the day you end up with three problems- our servers are configured to lock out ip-addresses that register more than 4 or 5 new users in a short space of time. You need to encourage users to register before hand to prevent this happening or to get a knowledgeable admin to talk to the techies to make an exception. Secondly new users are remarkably slow- and it all eats away at productive time. Thirdly, your role is subtly diverted from being the subject-expert 'qui encourager les autres' to a IT support techie.
- You direct new users to use VE- which is buggy and cannot be used on the talk pages, where they will spending a lot of time too. When a user asks for help- experienced users will be thinking in wikitext not VE.
Now on my User:ClemRutter/training#Booklets section you will find these:
If you want to customise them particularly to change the branding- it is simple to change the first and last page. They are all in multiples of four pages so you can double side print them as booklets.
I have put all the booklets onto commons as pdfs Commons:Category:Wikimedia UK training booklets. One important one is File:Individual skills training resource sheet package.pdf (odt) which gives you 50 sides of Howtos. It is on my to do list to translate each task into VE. ClemRutter (talk) 18:46, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
- @ClemRutter: Hi Clem!, thanks for taking the time to look over the details, and all the related advice for the event!
- I've just been confirming the times that people will be speaking so that I can get the time for the event pinned down - I'll be adding the schedule for the day to the page tomorrow.
- Thanks for the suggestion - I'll email participants and encourage them to set up an account before they show up.
- I usually start my tutorial with creating a user page (using templates for the more confident) and posting on another user's page (in source), before we move over to VE, so they should get an overview of both before beginning editing. For the sessions I've run so far, that seems to be enough to get people going.
- Thank you so much for the links to the guides, they look great! Look forward to seeing you at the weekend, and if you would like to come along, on the 15th you'd be very welcome! Zeromonk (talk) 21:02, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!
[edit]Hello, Zeromonk. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

[edit]Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland to History of Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland (your addition has since been removed). While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. If you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 21:20, 23 November 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for messaging me @Diannaa: Sorry for the late reply - the page was made during an editathon by several people collaborating at one laptop - it was made towards the end of the day and I really intended to go home and work on it, but life got in the way a little! The page now appears to have vanished, so I can't make any improvements. Do you have any idea what happened to it? Thanks in advance! Zeromonk (talk) 13:46, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
- The page History of Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland was turned into a redirect to Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland. All the history content is already in place on the article Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland, so there's no need to merge the two. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:54, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Diannaa: Ah, I see - I thought that some of the history material also originated elsewhere and was drawn together on the new page, as there were a few paragraphs' worth on the newer version, and there isn't that much on the existing page! Not to worry, I will make a section and add to the history content when I have the time, because what is on there is so sadly lacking, especially when compared to the history of the other UK nations' health services! Thanks so much for clarifying. Zeromonk (talk) 14:25, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

I am available to assist and can make Central London within 90 mins. There really does need to be a WMUK:London Education Network where these things can be alerted and discussed before they go live.
What do you want done- I can't find the page of articles in progress- or indeed any links to the articles considered. I looked at the Women in Red list 2016 (WIR2016)- but that is in plain with no links even though it says an article exists. Hasn't notability been cleared before the subjects were suggested. The column Justifies Article? on (WIR2016) is in most part blank?
What do you want us to do? ClemRutter (talk) 09:57, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Zeromonk, Sadly today I'm not free to join an editathon. I had a quick look at the list and I suspect that some of the individuals might seem marginal re notability. My advice for such articles would be to start in a sandbox and only move to mainspace when you have at least two independent reliable sources that give information on the individual and a clear assertion in the article as to their importance. If in doubt start with an article on whatever that made them famous. If you are around on Sunday I'd be happy to talk again as to how to promote such events to the editing community and the trainers list. I used to do that sort of thing when I worked for WMUK. - Busy today, sorry. And it only got announced yesterday on the Women in red page, which isn't enough time to get editors to signup. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:26, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

- Not able to assist. Beyond my knowledge. CyanoTex (talk) 10:39, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks Clem for getting back to me - it would be great if you could help tidy and maintain pages. I got asked to attend *very* recently and I'm not organising just helping out so I'm not sure on the details of the WIR list - they should have been screened for notability tho. Thanks for pointing out the lack of links, I'll add wiki links wherever I can in a bit. Some people are listed so they can be mentioned in relevant pages rather than having their whole page created too - there should be supporting trainers here to guide people in whether to do a new page or an edit in an existing page. - I have added cross-wiki links to WTR2016 - but they appear blue when most should be red. What is the link to the edit-a-thon page where these problems are being flagged? ClemRutter (talk) 10:48, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
- Cross-wiki links are always blue. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:23, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

- I have added redlinks to the English page- 100 Women (BBC) and re-read WP Notability which stresses that inclusion is based not on the notability of the individual, but on the available secondary source coverage. Here most of the women on the 100 Women (BBC) have multiple Google entries but most aren't valid as they refered to the Beeb having published their names. A better source to work from could be BBC World List which contains one line bios. Good luck! I look forward in taking part in the event post mortem. -- ClemRutter (talk) 12:38, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

Wellcome? scan 2 or 3 book pages? "gruesome calculation"
[edit]Hello Zeromonk. I have never come across you before, I think... It seems your Visiting Scholarship at Wellcome has expired... but perhaps you can help me with a question. Executive summary: Can someone scan perhaps 2 or 3 pages of a book that seems to be at Wellcome? Very long explanation, skip if pressed for time: I usually go to WP:RX for such requests. I also already have over a hundred sources on the topic at hand, and some may think one more is overkill. But this one is quite special: perhaps only a page or three from Aykroyd, W. R. "The Conquest of Famine." London: Chatto and Windus (1974).
I've been working on a top-to-bottom sandbox rewrite of Bengal famine of 1943 for about ten months now (and still have a couple months left to go). I have little concrete discussion (just the academic equivalent of angry, vague accusations followed by silent scowls) regarding the possibility that the famine resulted in part from (or was exacerbated by) profit-driven hoarding or clandestine exports. I found in a footnote (I had never seen this mentioned before in the past ten months) that Aykroyd was a member of the Bengal Famine Commission 1945, and that "the Commission itself made what it called the 'gruesome calculation' that for every death in the famine roughly a thousand rupees of excess profits were made", which is cited to page 79 of Aykroyd's book. I have exactly zero access to this book, and believe me, I've tried.
I probably don't need info about any other aspect of the famine. [I'm sure if I had the entire book I could find other useful cites/quotes, but they would very probably cover details that I could also readily source elsewhere.] I really only lack anything substantial about the "blood money" accusation.
If anyone who has easy access to Wellcome's wonderful resources and scanning machines could get that book, skim/scan around page 79 (and maybe the index?) for discussions of large businesses profiting from the famine, and scan perhaps 2 or 3 pages (hopefully searchable/convertible to text), I would be in that person's debt. Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 03:34, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Lingzhi: I'm still at Wellcome and am very happy to be able to help - I've sent you an email so that you can reply and I can forward you the scanned pages. Zeromonk (talk) 15:54, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
- A million thanks! I appreciate your time and effort! Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 16:22, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Dear Alice
I need your help again. I have worked really hard to write a new entry on Margaret, Lady Moir. I think I have submitted it for approval, but how on earth does one know what's happened to it? And when will someone let me know? I've put a note on my own talk page, but don't know whether to expect a reply.
It's like sending something into the ether and never knowing whether you will see it again. All so disorientating!

March Madness 2017
[edit]G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

[edit]On 15 April 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Civil Resettlement Units, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that at the end of the Second World War, more than 23,000 repatriated British prisoners of war volunteered to attend Civil Resettlement Units to help them readjust to being home? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Civil Resettlement Units. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Civil Resettlement Units), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Clean-up Help
[edit]Hello! I hope you can join in cleaning-up K-drama pages and their international broadcast sections as they are in violation of Wiki guidelines (Wiki is not a catalog/ TV guide). It's also a breeding ground for promotion from streaming sites, legal or not. It's an exclusive feature of these Korean pages, US/UK shows don't have it.
For example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_Lovers:_Scarlet_Heart_Ryeo#International_broadcast It's one of the better formatted ones. The others just full-blown lists of flag icons, TV stations and broadcast time.Chiefyuks (talk) 03:29, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
Categories
[edit]Hi. A few notes re Category:Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellows - for one thing categories should always themselves be categorised, if they're not hooked in to the hierarchy then they might as well not exist - and they're also invisible to eg maintenance bots. Conversely, cats don't normally have infoboxes and references - just a one line description of what they're about, ideally a {{catmain}} or {{catmore}} template - in fact, if there's no obvious corresponding article then the category probably shouldn't exist. Which brings me on to WP:OCAWARD - in general we don't categorise people by the awards they are given. There are exceptions, but they are the real big, WP:DEFINING ones - in this world, Nobel and FRS and that's about it. I've worked in Wellcome-funded labs, I understand that a PRF is a big deal - but I don't think it quite counts for a category. Another strike against it is that there's no article about it like Nobel Prize - in fact, it's not even mentioned in the main WT article. It's a grey area, but I think the material would work better as a List article, which you can infobox and ref to your heart's desire! <g> Cheers Le Deluge (talk) 14:47, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Le Deluge: thanks for the advice! I was thinking that since there were categories for various other Fellowships (such as Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Fellows of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, etc.), that it would be another useful way to group researchers. I've steered clear of the WT page or creating an article on the PRFs because I thought it would be too much of a WP:COI as I work there at the moment - possibly the same is true of the category but it felt less invasive! Zeromonk (talk) 08:54, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
- As I say, it's close but not quite there IMO. One obvious dividing line is that it doesn't put letters after your name (which prompts a random question, why don't Nobels give you letters after your name?). Another is that they're not "permanent" (in theory at least), and transient qualifications are rather deprecated, not least because they come with a maintenance burden for future generations. I don't know how many are created/lost each year, but that's another factor. I think it's understood that inhouse Wikimedians are wise enough to edit "home" pages without COI, the main argument against it is that by doing so you're depriving a protegee a chance of learning about Wikipedia via the article that they're most interested in (albeit again with a risk of COI). It's maybe the sort of thing to do by way of demonstration. In general, I wouldn't sweat this kind of categorising stuff _too_ much, when you've got a opportunity to generate so much unique content. Sounds a fun job to have. ;-/ Le Deluge (talk) 12:13, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

Editor Training this week - apologies for cross posting with Metawiki!
[edit]Dear Andrew D. ClemRutter, Edwardx, Geni, Gordo, Joseph2302, Jscammel, Khintye, Leutha, MassiveEartha, Paul W, Philafrenzy, Thryduulf, WereSpielChequers, (plus anyone I've missed!),
This is a request for help, if anyone is free at such late notice! (and sorry if you've already seen this on Meta, wanted to maximise chances of people seeing it!)
- I've just been told my by co-organiser for a schools wiki-training session at Imperial on Wednesday that they've had much more demand than expected and there will be about 2 classes-worth rather than 1 coming along (they'll all be in the same room, but there'll just be more of them than I was expecting!). So if anyone is free on Wednesday to help teach some secondary school students about wiki and help to improve some pages on women scientists, that would be enormously helpful. I'll do an overview talk from 11:30 - 12:15, then they'll have lunch, and then from 13:00 - 16:00 they'll be editing wiki.
- Also, the Institution of Engineering and Technology really enjoyed the last wiki-session, so they've booked in for an Electricity editathon on Thursday. That session should only be around 15 people, but backup is always welcome and there is the usual free Wellcome lunch on offer!
Hope you're all well, Zeromonk (talk) 10:26, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
P.S. I'm so sorry not to have seen you all in a while - the past month and a bit has been mad with two best friends' weddings and a seriously hefty workload doing research for a government enquiry.
- Might make the afternoon session. Where is the session at Imperial? Big place! Gordo (talk) 10:49, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Zeromonk: I've already signed up for the Thursday event. I'm not sure of the location for the Wednesday event but will try to attend that too. I suggest you post something on the English Wikipedia as well as here on meta as I only got a ping for this when I happened to visit the German Wikipedia -- my notification settings on the English Wikipedia must be set high. - Hi @Zzuuzz: thanks so much for letting me know, and thanks also for handling the situation so thoughtfully. The event at which those events were created was a pilot with 90+ students so it was a steep learning curve all round - I'm really grateful for you bringing this to my attention and at future events I'll make sure to give a fuller briefing on usernames and to look more closely at the usernames that students are creating. DYK for Hilda Lyon
[edit]On 28 July 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hilda Lyon, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the hull of USS Albacore (launch pictured) had the Lyon Shape that was originally designed for airships by a woman? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hilda Lyon. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Hilda Lyon), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Your Wikithon
[edit]Hi Alice! As you will see from the Women in Red talk page, I have just been reading about your wonderful efforts to encourage secondary school children to start editing on Wikipedia. You seem to be doing a great job but I see that many of the articles created do not seem to progress beyond "draft". Please let me know if there's anything my colleagues and I from Women in Red can do to help you along. I would be particularly interested to have the user names of any of those who continue editing after the introductory event. I know many are frustrated when their articles are deleted, frequently for no good reason. If you can let us have the dates and venues of your coming events, we can also publicize them on WiR and try to follow up on some of the articles created.--Ipigott (talk) 15:35, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Ipigott: This is the first time I have seen a real use for Barn Stars. Each of the participants should be encouraged by getting a customised one. Not only is this good for motivation- but youngsters need a sheath of certificates and papers when applying for any job. The poor interviewer (if it gets that far) needs to find something in the folder that they can talk about- A barn star and an accompanying pdf describing the project, and the students contribution could be just that document. One of my former students secured an interview and place to study Maths at Cambridge on the strength of the sentence in her 100 word statement on interests- All the music things and restoring a Victorian house: plumbing, electrics, plastering etc. It stood out. Handing out a certificate/gives us a good excuse to maintain contact and send them suggestions. --ClemRutter (talk) 19:18, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Certificates of participation are an excellent idea, especially personalised ones for the young that mention things they have done. But we need to be careful not use Barnstars as a standard participation reward. Aside from them being unknown outside the community, there is longstanding consensus in the community not to "devalue" barnstars by giving them to everyone who participates in something. ϢereSpielChequers 14:54, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Ipigott, ClemRutter, and WereSpielChequers: Thanks for the messages, lots of food-for-thought! I really like the idea of awarding participation certificates for students to put in their personal development files, I'll work on that and share with you when I've concocted something! There's been a little further chipping away at some of the drafts, but this summer I've been juggling a few jobs so my follow-up support for editors hasn't been quite as prompt as I'd usually aim for - this perhaps has had an effect on the article completion rate. I'll have a think about how we can do something to improve things! I'll supply WiR with the details of any future events - sometimes they're for members of a society or organisation but I'll keep you posted either way. Thanks again all for your support - this is the sort of set of messages that is lovely to show new editors to show them how brilliant the wiki-community can be :) Zeromonk (talk) 16:47, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response. Let's just keep in touch and see what we can do to encourage editathon participants to stick with Wikipedia.--Ipigott (talk) 18:18, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
- Sitting under the perfect sky in Congenies- attempting to get a photo of two Geckos side by side- and a reliable wifi signal- the mind strays a little. How about running a follow-up wiki-surgery on the Euston Road. Invite the participants who have failed to deliver and the ones that have- invite them to bring a friend (brother or grandma) to whom they can show what they have done- and can become their pupil and they can show them how to edit and start a new article. They talk to us before hand about what they want to do- we listen and facilitate. We do three minute- lollypops- for instance:this is how you add a picture, this is how we do a reference, a table, a graph (short and to the point- and each one tethered to a skills line on the certificate of attendance). Stage two would be to stage weekly wiki-surgeries where any Wikipedian can drop in and get help with items that are concerning them. Each week the Wellcome or WiR or other sponsors would work up a todo list of sinple tasks that could be tackled by anyone with a spare moment. A ce on a particular article, an article lacking references, a translation, an article needed. There are staffing issues- and other thing to consider- but I see a press release here that will pull in most of the Nationals m\ybe the Evening Standard will give you a column and a fatcat salary to write it.
- Thanks for your response. Let's just keep in touch and see what we can do to encourage editathon participants to stick with Wikipedia.--Ipigott (talk) 18:18, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

I'd love to chat sometime; I work at the Academy of Medical Sciences and am hoping to improve the Academy on Wikipedia, e.g. adding Fellow's pages, uploading images, categorisation. I'm fairly new and would love to talk with you about 'how to' or tips at some point.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting
[edit]As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. Jesse Boot- Nottingham
[edit]***Greetings from Kent***
Can you have a look at this?
Boot launches free online archive- funded by Wellcome trust it has the potential to add a load of useful 1900- 1950s high street photos- but copyright is unclear and, if allowed, how we can get them onto commons efficiently requires a little thinking.
Working for Boots was an acceptable profession for middle class ladies- it was not like being a shop assistant. (Source: A particularly difficult great aunt of mine about 1958.) --ClemRutter (talk) 19:18, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

- Thanks @ClemRutter and Andrew Davidson: I'll look into it and see what we can do! Love the source info! I applied for a Postdoc working with that archive before I got the role at Wellcome (which seems like an age ago now...). Zeromonk (talk) 08:13, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

Maud Perry Menzies
[edit]Hi Dr. White. I was just looking at this new article, which seems like a great addition, but I just had a quick question–when you mention that Dr. Menzies served "in Normandy on D-day" does that mean on D-day itself, 6 June, or just during the war on the continent? I feel like I've seen things, e.g. here, here, here (not specialist/reliable sources, obviously), saying/implying that no women [edit: foreign correspondent Martha Gellhorn aside] were allowed to land on D-day itself, since it was a full-on war zone. But I'm no specialist on this. Blythwood (talk) 23:14, 8 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hi @Blythwood: Thanks for your message! I read in her obituary that she was at one of the military hospitals for D Day (so presumably not part of the landings but perhaps based in France already and dealing with casualties?) - it's possible the obit is incorrect, or maybe I should rephrase this article to make that clearer? What do you think? Zeromonk (talk) 08:05, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
- According to the BMJ obit she arrived 10 days after the landings so I changed it to "soon after". Pity her bag has a NC tag. I notice nobody actually says where she was born. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:51, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks @Philafrenzy: appreciate it! I'll see if I can ask the RCPSG nicely if they'll reconsider the licence. Zeromonk (talk) 15:12, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
- You have enough for a DYK. If you could get the bag as a free image it might make a good picture hook. (only needs a low resolution version?) Philafrenzy (talk) 15:18, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks @Philafrenzy: appreciate it! I'll see if I can ask the RCPSG nicely if they'll reconsider the licence. Zeromonk (talk) 15:12, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

- Thanks for the check! One depressing thing I've learned editing Wikipedia is that if you've run into an interesting fact there's a good chance that it's too good to be true. Also looking at your user page is reminding me of what a great institution the Wellcome Library is–I'm a member and wish I got more chances/excuses to visit... Blythwood (talk) 17:41, 9 March 2018 (UTC) @Blythwood: just spotted this, sorry! If/when you're around, do drop me an email - it's always nice to meet fellow Wikipedians in person for a (was going to say tea but I recall from your userpage you're not so into tea) hot chocolate (?) and a chat! Zeromonk (talk) 08:16, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
Autopatrolled right
[edit]Hi Dr. White–a suggestion. I see that you've now written 26 articles, which places you over the threshold to have your account marked as autopatrolled, meaning that your articles don't need to be manually reviewed.
As I can tell that you know what you're doing, would you be happy to be nominated? You can nominate yourself if you want or I'd be very happy to do it for you–I'm keen to speed up new page review if I can. As you have professional standing and the account creator right already I think you'd be very likely to be accepted. Blythwood (talk) 22:28, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Blythwood: thanks for the suggestion! I was eyeing up the autopatrolled permission just yesterday and pondering it actually - I'd be very happy if you would nominate me, thank you. I'm keen to chip in and help with some reviewing myself too, but I wasn't sure how best to begin - do you have any suggestions, or should I just take the plunge and get on with it? Best, Zeromonk (talk) 08:14, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Alex Shih (talk) 18:21, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive
[edit]G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
- updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.
For the Milhist co-ordinators, AustralianRupert and MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 10:54, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Ethel Armstrong
[edit]On 30 March 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Ethel Armstrong, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Ethel Armstrong. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Ethel Armstrong), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Event coordinator
[edit]Hi, the English Wikipedia recently created a new user permissions for editors involved in off-wiki outreach work, event coordinator. This new permission allows users to mark accounts for confirmed for up to 10 days, and also allows them to create accounts for events without rate limits without some of the features of the account creator right that aren't used at edit-a-thons and other events. I have added the event coordinator permission to your account and removed the account creator permission, as you appear to have been using it mainly for outreach work.
This should have no noticeable impact on your ability to create accounts, and will give you the extra ability to temporarily confirm accounts if you need to. For more in formation, you can see the information page on the right, or you can ask me if you have any questions. TonyBallioni (talk) 13:14, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks very much @TonyBallioni: that's brilliant, and thanks also for the clear explanation of the difference between the two permissions. Zeromonk (talk) 07:38, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in study
[edit]Hello,
I am E. Whittaker, an intern at Wikimedia with the Scoring Team to create a labeled dataset, and potentially a tool, to help editors deal with incivility when they encounter it on talk pages. We are currently recruiting editors to be interviewed about their experiences with incivility on talk pages. Would you be interested in being interviewed? I am contacting you because of your involvement in Wikipedia’s Women in Red project. The interviews should take ~1 hour, and will be conducted over BlueJeans (which does allow interviews to be recorded). If, so, please email me at ewhit@umich.edu in order to schedule an interview.
Thank you Ewitch51 (talk) 20:26, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Wikithon questions
[edit]Sorry, I'm feeling like a bit of an ignoramus here. I don't really know much about wikithons / editathons at all. I tend to just work at my own pace doing my own things. However, one thing I am doing at the moment is improving a lot of London station / tube articles, and most of them need book / magazine sources I just don't have, with no online equivalents. If I knew there would be the specific book sources I was looking for, I'd be there in a shot and possibly churn out at least one GA in an afternoon. (For example, Euston Road, which name checks the Wellcome, was improved to GA predominantly using three sources - The London Encyclopedia, Old and New London and the Hansard). Do you think that's the sort of thing that would be available there, or is the Wellcome more specifically geared towards history and science?
I think Andrew Davidson knows a bit about them as well, so maybe he can advise. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:28, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Ritchie333: The Wellcome Library is best for medical history like the recent Godfrey's Cordial. For London stations, my first stop would be the London Transport Museum. The Ian Allan bookstore at Waterloo probably has lots of good specialised books too but I've not been there yet and I'm not sure how well the business is going since his death. While I'm here, that reminds me. I recently drove through Hanwell and noticed a plaque for Marshall. I knew they were based in that area but hadn't seen the plaque before. I'll take a picture next time, in case we need it. Perhaps we should do a history of rock editathon in Ealing as that's also where the Rolling Stones got started. There's an annual event called the Hanwell Hootie, which might make a good centrepiece. See also Ealing Jazz Festival... Andrew D. (talk) 12:29, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- I've been in Ian Allan, but the books there are either too broad ("London Underground for Dummies") or too specialist ("Everything you ever wanted to know about the Waterloo & City Line but were afraid to ask"). I've also been in the LTM but the books there seem to be rather expensive; I'd prefer to get a book out of the library and then buy it if I notice I can use it for multiple articles over a long time frame. The trouble with a rock editathon, like any editathon, is having sufficient source material available. I can bring along my rock biographies, but that's only a small snippet of what's available. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:33, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Ritchie333 and Andrew Davidson: we've got Old and New London (digitised version too), Hansard records, lots of amazing general encyclopedias and databases you can access in the building or with a library card and Medical Officer of Health reports for all of London, some of which document the coming of railways and stations to different areas (we're about to release them for all of the UK) - all of those resources should be broad and relevant to your interests. You just need a photo ID and proof of address to join the Library and access anything you need. The Wikithon is particularly focussed on adding and improving pages on Women, and especially on archives and libraries - I know this is slightly further afield from your usual interests but it would be wonderful if you could contribute some edits on these topics too! Zeromonk (talk) 07:16, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
Quick update on this. Firstly, I've managed to find a whole load of work I can do that's more in tune with Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, so that's probably a better fit. Tomorrow, I am going to be busy waving giant "OMG STOP BREXIT NOW" signs everywhere, so it looks like it'll be Sunday when I get to the Wellcome. I've tested my laptop and the battery is completely fried, so I hope there's somewhere to plug the charger in, as I'll need it! Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:57, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
Have your say!

The event on 7 March in Berlin
[edit]Hi Zeromonk, I am the contact person for the event in Berlin. This is my first bilingual event in Wikipedia. Have you ever realized such an event? Do you speak or understand German? Best regards Iva • =>?! • 20:26, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @IvaBerlin: thank you so much for contacting me. I am sad to say that I speak only a little German - I will translate the slides from my presentation in advance (I understand and read better than I speak!). Then I can help with editing online during the practical session? I hope this will be okay for you? Zeromonk (talk) 09:04, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
- Hi again, it's like my English with your German, obviously. :) Of course it will be a great help if you are involved in the online editing. Your presentation will be held in English. Which slides will you translate in advance?
- I have some more questions: Is it okay if I link your English Wikipedia profile at the event? Your real name will be on your user page anyway. I've been asked several times what a Wikimedian is. So it would be good to link it. The second question concerns the different handling in the German and English Wikipedia. Do you know that? Will you mention this in your presentation? Have we to talk about it before the event? Maybe via Mail or what do you think about it? Best regards Iva • =>?! • 11:21, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
- @IvaBerlin: you are far too generous, your English is excellent and my German is definitely not as good! I will prepare just a few slides explaining what a Wikimedian is, and about what we have been doing with scientists in the UK and why. Please do link to my profile, that would be very helpful. I think it will be very helpful to talk about differences between En and De Wikipedias - would you like to email: a.white@wellcome.ac.uk ? Zeromonk (talk) 09:49, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Review Hanne Bergius?
[edit]Hello, You said in Berlin that we could turn to you when it comes to reviewing an article. In the meantime, a participant has submitted the article about Hanne Bergius for viewing. Are you so kind as to see if you can release it? Thank you very much! Best regards Iva • =>?! • 11:29, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
- @IvaBerlin: absolutely brilliant article - but for enwiki we will need some references (citations for articles about the subject and her work, not just things written by her). I have left a review message on the page, and will search for and add some citations myself too over the next couple of days, and then approve the draft once we have some references. DYK for Katharine Cook
[edit]On 23 April 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Katharine Cook, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Katharine Timpson Cook established training programmes for midwives in Namirembe, Uganda, but distrusted her students and censored their mail? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Katharine Cook. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Katharine Cook), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. The reason given for LancetCountdown's block is: " There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing. Additionally, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for your contributions to Wikipedia, you must disclose who is paying you to edit. If you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must: Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked. Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked. If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block. To do so, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason for thinking that the block was an error, and publish the page. ".

This user began editing just before I gave my introductory talk on how and what to edit - they didn't realise until it was too late that they weren't supposed to do COI editing but we've had a chat and they completely understand now and will only make helpful contributions. This IP address is for a library where we run lots of sessions to train people on how to edit (including today's editathon) so I would be hugely grateful if the block can be lifted ASAP to enable us to continue this work. Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice
[edit]Hi Zeromonk, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.
Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.
To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!
Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:35, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

[edit]On 4 August 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Association of Black Cardiologists, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Association of Black Cardiologists has shared resources on the impact of coronavirus disease on black communities in response to the higher death rates seen among African Americans? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Association of Black Cardiologists. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Association of Black Cardiologists), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Would think Tea dance (gay event) should be its own article
[edit]Hi, Zeromonk. I saw a question from you regarding whether I think Tea dance (gay event) should be its own article versus being included I suppose as a section within the Tea dance article. I would think it should be a separate article. It seems significantly different because the gay tea dances were for people whose sexuality and subculture were not accepted at the time, whereas the English countryside dances I think have been very mainstream and accepted. The gay dances allowed people to get together who wouldn't have had so many alternatives, and thus were rather crucial for the gay culture, giving the gay tea dances an exceptional significance, whereas I'd think the mainstream tea dances were just one option among many for the people who went to them. The gay tea dances showed a significant creative solution in getting around discriminatory laws at the time. Also, the gay people who created the tea dances didn't even want to have tea dances, they would have preferred to go to gay events at New York clubs and drink alcohol, but such was outlawed at the time. Also, I can see the Tea dance article near the beginning alerts the reader there is an article about the gay tea dances if the reader is interested.
By the way, what does Zeromonk mean?
Greg Dahlen (talk) 16:53, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
@Greg Dahlen: thanks for the considered reply - I had reflected on it and come to that conclusion too after some pondering so I added the hatnote to the other tea dance article to help people to find this one, and also added some links from other Wikipedia articles that seemed relevant (I hope I got them right - you can check them using the "what links here" button on the grey bar on the left if you like).
Zeromonk was a name randomly suggested on another platform when I was signing up to something else a while ago and I just went with it for a few things! My real name is Alice :) Zeromonk (talk) 19:24, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. DYK for Racial segregation in the United Kingdom
[edit]On 13 May 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Racial segregation in the United Kingdom, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that many places in the United Kingdom were racially segregated and non-white customers were banned from using spaces and facilities, even though the law never officially permitted such a colour bar? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Racial segregation in the United Kingdom. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Racial segregation in the United Kingdom), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. [edit]On 9 July 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Avtar Singh Jouhl, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Avtar Singh Jouhl took Malcolm X to a segregated pub in Smethwick as part of his campaign to end the colour bar? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Avtar Singh Jouhl. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Avtar Singh Jouhl), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Kathleen Robb
[edit]Hi, I noticed that you had accepted Kathleen Robb, which I had declined earlier. I have to say, I find it unusual that you submit it to AfC, and then accept it soon after yourself. (I'm not saying it's against the 'rules' as such, just unusual.) Moreover, doing so once I had flagged it for speedy based on the copyvio (at least some of which still remains). Whilst you don't have to explain yourself to me, of course, if you can help me understand this, I would be grateful. Thanks, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:03, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- @DoubleGrazing: thanks for raising this - I was asked to review the draft by the creator and submitted it wrongly. Once submitted, I was in the process of helping them to correct the CopyVio but an edit conflict occured with your rejection - I read through the report in detail and saw that the plagiarism was mostly un-encylopaedic content that would need to be removed anyway, and job descriptions, so I decided to go through this with them on a call and explain why I was changing what I was changing and educate them about writing for Wikipedia. Once this was significantly rectified and (I thought, though apologies) no longer enough of a concern to warrant speedy, I then accepted. I would be very grateful for any thoughts on doing this better next time. My initial thoughts are that I should bookmark Earwig's tool and run it on sandboxes to pick up errors before submission, so that they can be fixed without two people trying to review at once? Zeromonk (talk) 15:12, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- Okay thanks, understanding a bit better now. :) A couple of things:
- If you know that you're going to approve a draft as soon as you've submitted it, then you could just move it into the main article space and clean up the AfC templates. I don't know if that's ideal, either, but at least it would avoid some of this confusion.
- And yes, the Copyvio Detector is a must, whether doing AfC or NPP review; after all, copyvio is perhaps the most serious offence there is on Wikipedia (well, maybe after BLP attack pages etc.). As you probably know, you can access it from the reviewer tools panel of a pending draft, but I keep it also bookmarked as I need it constantly for checking published articles and unsubmitted drafts also.
- Best, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:28, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- @DoubleGrazing: Thanks so much for this understanding and advice, I really appreciate it! And I agree with you about copyvio. I'll definitely follow the route you advise in the future! Zeromonk (talk) 15:31, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- I meant to mention something else. It's not a criticism or anything, just an observation. I noticed that your AfC acceptance rate is very high, at over 90%. Can you think why that might be, eg. do you often work with article creators and help them get their draft published once you feel it's ready? I'm only asking, as my own rate is <10% (which I'm not saying is 'right' in any sense, or even 'normal'), and that's obviously a big difference. I'm sure you apply the same criteria, so it must be something to do with how you select drafts for review. Just wondering... -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:45, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- @DoubleGrazing: Really good question! Some reviews are helping article creators who have been to training events that I have run, or other training in the UK and have seen my guides and asked for help, but often I keep hitting the random article button until I see something that might have potential but needs a lot of tidying and polishing. I really find it rewarding to get articles on interesting topics (but often not very promising initial drafts!) to a place where they can actually be useful to people. Also, frankly, I find that often when I see a random submission, someone has already got to the reject button before me! Zeromonk (talk) 15:52, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

which apparently came from the Wellcome Collection . The IA scans appear to be incomplete, and was wondering if someone with connections to the relevant institution would be able to make the holders of the original aware of this.

Women in Red 8th Anniversary
[edit]Women in Red 8th Anniversary | |
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap! |
