Busy in real life

The shared IP 196.15.16.20 belongs to Oracle India, and blocking it means blocking edits to a lot of users. Please consider unblocking it.

BTW just curious Utcursch, you seem to be busy in real life for a while (over an year?) now? scorpion032 (talk) 08:49, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Back in September, you blocked 168.221.143.68 (talk · contribs) for one year due to vandalism.[1] An editor,Anthony Krupp, has been caught in the hard block and is requesting an unblock. Do you have any objections to changing the block options to allow registered editing? Thanks. - auburnpilot talk 21:25, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

As far as I remember, I had blocked only anonymous editing from that IP address. Anyway, I've unblocked and re-blocked to make sure that only the anonymous users are blocked. utcursch | talk 07:10, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Ranjit Singh's misl

Regarding this, I believe that Ranjit Singh belonged to "Sukerchakia misl" but will need to read back the source again as I had read on his history long time ago. However, "deol" last name addition by editor Khandoor did come as a shocker to me. --RoadAhead =Discuss= 04:51, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Whatever the clan is (a citation is needed for that), his name shouldn't be mentioned as "Maharaja Ranjit Singh Sukerchakia" or "Maharaja Ranjit Singh Deol" -- it's just "Maharaja Ranjit Singh". utcursch | talk 02:45, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Sardarji Jokes

Any article ought to present both sides of an issue. A Sikh perspective of the issue need not be removed because it differs from your view. Like the Vir Sanghvi article and its rejoinder both need to be discussed. To present only the views of the so called 'celebrities' belittles the open concept of Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kulveer (talkcontribs) 06:45, 10 February 2009 (UTC) ________

Hi, your editing on this instance is appreciable, since you have kept the story on the '12 o' clock' on the page. And I do realise that I needed an authentic source for this story, and hence I searched all day for an authentic research on the subject. I think the page is now more complete, after your thoughtfull editing.

However, just wanted to convey that sometimes folklore is as much a part of the literary tradition as is a research paper based on folklore. India, more than any other country has a tradition of 'word of mouth' literature, with even the Rigvedas being written thousands of years AFTER they were recited, having been orally transferred from one generation to another. However we need to qualify a para with the sourced defined as folklore. You can go across hundreds of Wiki pages on the history, purported history of Europe in the dark ages, and it is all dependent on folklore. So, while Sardar jokes are a part of the written tradtion by way of internet and sms's, the rejoinders are not.

As for Veer Sanghvi's article, I wonder if you have read the article. It is such a pathetic piece of work that it does not deserve a place on this page. However, if it is at all present, the well considered counter points need to be put across too. See, I am not here to score points, because I know your intentions are honourable. But I hope you see that if a layman goes across this page, he would come across convinced that it is indeed okay to joke a while on the hapless Sardars. So, when you present Sanghvi's comments per se, they need to be countered for a balanced perspective.

Kulveer (talk) 06:31, 11 February 2009 (UTC)KulveerKulveer (talk) 06:31, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Oh well!, maybe I'll have to publish my own book on it before we get the counter points on Wikipedia :D. I have added some sections on the Ethnic Jokes Page, wherever good sources were available. In India however, original research on sociologically diverse views is rare. Till then! Kulveer (talk) 07:27, 12 February 2009 (UTC)KulveerKulveer (talk) 07:27, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Wrong category

I noted that you first removed and than re-added the category "Khalistan Movement People" to article Jaswant Singh Khalra. After reading the description of the category I feel its wrong to add it to this article. Could you please provide neutral and reliable references to justify the addition of this category to the article? Cheers! --Roadahead 20:10, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Well, I was just refining Category:Khalistan movement people -- moving all the persons from Category:Khalistan movement to Category:Khalistan movement people. I am not really concerned about whether Jaswant Singh Khalra should be added to any categories about the Khalistan movement or not. utcursch | talk 02:22, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

I've just reviewed and declined this user's unblock request (and extended the block due to explicit legal threats). But I wanted to say that in the future you should ask another admin to do the blocking in a case like this, since you were basically blocking him over his behavior in a content dispute with you. Not that the block wasn't justified, but people respond a lot better to blocks if they are made to avoid the appearance of unfairness. Mangojuicetalk 18:15, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Request: Helen

Hello dear Utcursch!

User:Cleark, without even discussing, moved the article Helen (actress) to Helen Khan, and then shifted all the content to one of its redirects, Helen Richardson. This created a great deal of confusion. Helen (actress) is the most proper way to call her as it's her stage name and she has always been credited, cited and referred to by that name. Other versions can appear in the infobox.

Now I try to move it back to Helen (actress), but I cannot. Apart from that this user created some problems as the talk page of Helen Khan remains full and is not a redirect.

If you could please move the article back as it should be, I would be grateful. Regards, ShahidTalk2me 16:26, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Done. utcursch | talk 14:21, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I would also like to ask you something that interests me a lot. What was the matter wih Gulzar? I think the move of the article to Gulzar (lyricist) is wrong. Because:
A) In the disambiguation list, he is the only one who is referred to as simply Gulzar with one name (the other names and articles are more than just Gulzar and don't have brackets, say, Gulzar (doctor) or Gulzar (film).
There is a problem with calling him a lyricist. He is also an equally noted director and screenwriter, and has also authored some books. So it's not clear as to how exactly we should call him. And that's the biggesst problem here.
I think the article Gulzar (lyricist) should be moved back to Gulzar, and Gulzar to Gulzar (disambiguation). We can then get someone to fix all the links using AWB or something. What do you think?
Other articles I wanted to ask your help for are Sanjeev Kumar, which is an unnecessary redirect of Sanjeev Kumar (actor) and Om Shanti Om. But the Gulzr case is obviously more important to me. Regards, ShahidTalk2me 20:42, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Well, somebody thought that other people/places named Gulzar were as important as the film personality. So, s/he created a disambiguation page at Gulzar and moved the article on Gulzar Saab to Sampooran Singh Gulzar (which is wrong, since Gulzar is not his surname). Since nobody calls him "Sampooran Singh Gulzar", I moved the article to [Gulzar (lyricist)]]; I guess a better title would be Gulzar (film personality) or something similar. We can also file a move request and see if the article can be moved to Gulzar without any controversy. utcursch | talk 13:42, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Advice please

Hi! I was about to place a message for some advice on Lahore_2009's Talk page, then noticed he had been blocked for various reasons. Having spotted your name there I wondered if you could help instead? Basically I am unsure about this article titled Panhwar especially in view of the e-mail and website links at the bottom of the Renowned_Panhwars section. Also as the article indicates Panhwar's are also known as Panwar's which disambiguates to Ponwar's I wonder if the page should be either deleted and redirected, or merged into the Ponwar article? Also in view of the reasons for Lahore's blocking, ie disruptive edits, would you please review my prior query on his talk page, relating to some of edits and his reply to me to see if the information he gave me is correct and his edits which I queried were okay? Many thanks Richard Harvey (talk) 00:27, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure if Ponwars and Panhwars are same -- they seem to be different. I've cleaned up the article on Panhwars. Going by the discussion on Lahore 2009's talk page, you seem to be correct :-). utcursch | talk 13:49, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

I don't know why a separate article for a relatively short section is really necessary or even relevant to the edit war currently going on, but whatever.Cosprings (talk) 14:32, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Utcursch hey

Hey friend, I long wanted to talk to you about the Gulzar redirect, but let's leave it aside for a while. As for Burman, That's not the filmography, that's the template the user has created, with only 50 of his films. Such templates should be made for composers, especially when only a quarter of his entire filmography is presented (POV). ShahidTalk2me 14:40, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Well, hopefully, the article Rahul Dev Burman filmography will be expanded nicely like the other articles in Category:Filmographies. utcursch | talk 14:42, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
Obviosly. I'll be happy to lend a helping hand. But the template should be deleted, ain't it? ShahidTalk2me 14:43, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
We can have a discussion at Template talk:Sachin Dev Burman. Maybe the template can be changed to have the composer's scores with certain attributes (e.g. the award-winning ones)? It can also include some of the composer's relations. Or, if you feel that it should be deleted, you can take it to WP:MfD. User:Cosprings seems to be a constructive user, so there's no point in being hostile. We're all here to improve Wikipedia in our own ways :-) utcursch | talk 14:48, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
Defiinitely. It is however very well known that such templates are not acceptable for actors/composers but only directors. Making only award-winning ones is quite POV as well. Awards do not reflect talent nor do they represent his best works even allegedly. My all-time favourite RDB compositions did not even get him nominations. Well there is already a TfD.
