About us

[edit]

Welcome to the main page of the Punk music WikiProject. The project launched on April 2, 2006. Currently, we have -1 active members. Please see the discussion page for information on various project-related collaborations.

WikiProject Punk music was formed to foster the creation and encyclopedic improvement of punk rock-related articles, and to establish guidelines for those articles. Its members endeavor to produce a succinct, comprehensive, general, and authoritative reference on punk rock-related topics. The ultimate goal of the project is to have every article within its scope be at featured status. To participate, simply add your name to the participants section.

Parentage

[edit]

Since punk music covers multiple branches of topics, the WikiProject is therefore a sub-project of numerous collaborations:

Sister projects

[edit]

There are also a number of similar genre-oriented projects which we consider our "sister" projects:

Task forces

[edit]

These are task forces dedicated to specific aspects of punk music such as individual artists, subgenres, etc. Some of these are WikiProjects in and of themselves, but their scope is so finely limited that we consider them child projects of WikiProject Punk music and work closely with them in much the same way that we do with task forces. If you would like to propose a new task force or work group, make your suggestion on the project talk page to see if other editors are interested.

If interested, please sign our participants section.

Scope and goals

[edit]

Mission statement

[edit]

The goal of the Punk music Wikiproject is to organize, clean, and improve punk rock-related information within a format that fits Wikipedia's policies and guidelines to, ultimately, the level of quality stressed in the Featured Article and Featured List guidelines.

Scope

[edit]

Currently, this WikiProject covers the following items:

  1. Anyone and anything affiliated with the genre of punk rock, including musicians, albums, songs, artists, record labels, subgenres, etc.
  2. Anything featured on the Punk rock portal.
  3. Anything located within a punk or punk-affiliated category, sub-category, list, article, stub, or template.

Goals and duties

[edit]

Our goals and duties are as follows:

  1. Discussions and debates relating to the above items, including merges, citations, other references, image issues, splits, cleanup, formatting, and expansion.
  2. Reduce trivial information, speculation, point of view, and anything else that violates Wikipedia's core article policies.
  3. Monitoring all articles for violations of anything listed in the above two parts.
  4. Work toward making all punk rock-related articles and lists clean, organized, well-written, and accessible.
  5. Bring numerous articles to Good Article, Featured Article, and/or Featured List status.

Your role

[edit]

We need the participation of Wikipedians and punk music fans alike. Here are some general guidelines to follow.

How to help

[edit]
  1. Please sign your name below and introduce yourself in the monthly roll call section of the talk page.
  2. Take a look at recent discussions and the things to do page to see if your ideas have already been or need to be addressed.
  3. Get to know other users so that you can get a sense of the Project's attitude and each member's opinions on what should be merged, expanded, and so on. This will allow you to work better with the team, especially on major projects.
  4. Make sure you cite your sources, follow the project's guidelines in addition to style guidelines, and follow the discussions and agreements for the project.
  5. Look for text that seems biased (see WP:NPOV) and fix it.
  6. Be bold, but do not be reckless. See the above items and the section below for further information on what to do and what not to do.

How not to help

[edit]

Do not:

  1. Insert un-cited and trivial information (see: WP:V and WP:TRIV).
  2. Revert war (adherence to the One Revert Rule is encouraged)
  3. Add original research, unsourced claims, speculation, point of view, excessive external links, vandalism, and patent nonsense.

Things to remember

[edit]
  1. This is a general interest encyclopedia. Articles should be understandable and appeal to both casual readers and dedicated punk fans alike.
  2. Not every person, band, album, record label, etc. in existence deserves their/its own article. Article topics must demonstrate independent notability using citations to reliable third-party sources. Primary sources are important too, but they are not enough to support an encyclopedia article on their own.
  3. See: What Wikipedia is Not.
  4. Again, we stress: this project is mainly for cleanup, organization, enhancement, factual fixes, and so on. Trivial information is frowned upon.

If some of these items seem redundant, it only underscores what we all believe in as a group.

Open/major tasks

[edit]

The following is a chart of our largest tasks. For a complete list, please see the things to do subpage, in addition to our talk page. See the opentask template at the top of the page for the priority tasks. Project members, this chart should feature "priority one" tasks!

Punk rock Portal

[edit]

{{Portal|Punk rock}} Make sure to visit the Punk rock Portal. Also you can vote for the selected article of the week at Portal:Punk rock/Vote.

Other

[edit]
  • See the Wikipedia:WikiProject Punk music/index for a list of Punk music-related articles that do not require significant attention. Chances are, if an item doesn't belong on that list or isn't on there, it needs to be fixed (make a note on the things to do page and/or the discussion page).
  • Also remember that there is a Punk music barnstar that you can give out to deserving editors (and a userbox for those who are awarded the barnstar).

Participants

[edit]

Here is a list of Punk music Wikiproject members, together with some of their interests. To join the group simply add yourself to the list of participants, being sure to maintain alphabetical order.

  Name  Talk page   Special interests
Afddiary Talk Mostly interested in melodic hardcore, skate punk, and pop punk, especially from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s - but I can find something to like in all styles. Favorite punk bands include (but are definitely not limited to - and definitely not in order): Belvedere, The Distillers, The Gits, Randy, Only Crime, Bad Religion, Good Riddance, Propagandhi, Michael Monroe, Rise Against, Less Than Jake, The Offspring, and many, many more. I've created and heavily edited quite a few album pages, and I hope to help out more!
AKStraightedge Talk My musical tastes span from emo, ska, and pop punk to things such as psychobilly and horrorpunk, street, and even post-hardcore, crossover thrash, hardcore, and grindcore. Will work on creating and cleaning up pages for bands in those genres, and also do album and track listings when needed. Also will work to clean up and expand some of the punk ideology and subculture pages.
Alex 101 Talk Most of my work has been on many bands such as The Offspring, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, Face to Face, D.I., Rancid and Pennywise. I've also created discography pages for some of those bands.
AnarcistPig Talk I do album covers. If you see an album article with no cover image, leave a link on my talk page.
Anarkafrica Talk I've been a fan of hardcore and punk rock since 1998 when a friend showed me her Hopeless Records collection after school. After that I was in and out of various bands from hardcore, to punk, ska, jazz, death metal etc. I've contributed photos and edited information for accuracy on bands I'm familiar with. I'll be around when I can.
Andrea662xx Talk
AndroidDrummer Talk I love punk rock music and have been listening to it for many years. Some of my favourite bands are The Adicts, some of Rise Against's earlier stuff, Anti-Flag and Rancid. I try to contribute to punk articles as much as I can.
AugustusAudax Talk If it's punk and it's after 1990, I love it. Green Day, Bad Religion, The Offspring, NOFX, etc.
Bagel7 Talk I love a great many punk bands, including but not limited to The Offspring, Bad Religion, AFI, Blink-182, and Green Day

Black60dragon Talk I love all kinds of rock from Hard Rock, to Metal, to Alternative but Punk Rock is my favorite. My favorite Punk Bands are Green Day, The Offspring, and Rise Against as well as others

Love the early stuff like The Clash and the Ramones, the L.A. scene like Suicidal Tendencies and Black Flag, D.C. bands like Bad Brains and Minor Threat, Bay Area bands such as Dead Kennedys and Crimpshrine, among others. Currently I'm working on fixing up articles centered around the 924 Gilman Street scene, especially the late '80s stuff.
Blakemaster2000 Talk I love bands like Blink-182 and The Offspring.
Bobyllib Talk I enjoy old-school punk mostly, well... punk through new wave and then veering off into indie. Anything after about 1987 in terms of "punk" doesn't really interest me.
Brakoholic Talk Been actively listening to punk since 1993, and passively even longer. Fan of all varieties of music in general, but am a punk rocker at heart. Been actively involved in the punk scene since the mid 90s. Threw shows in the 90s, worked street teams in the 00s, wrote for webzines in the 00s/10s. I am a professional writer by trade so I originally started editing Wikipedia because seeing bad writing, typos and grammatical errors irks me, and being able to do something about them (unlike in most media) is a godsend. Only natural I would want to help with topics I care about, so here I am.
Chief Blackdawg Talk Main Founder of the World Wide PyratePunxPunk Promoter and punk community organizer in the San Francisco Bay Area as well the world wide underground punk community, has been active for over 25 years in punk culture. Started long ago hand drawing punk fliers Under his Artist name Marcus DaAnarchist and still to this day of no Lord 2013 still draws them up. Has opened or helped open many venues and vast knowledge of nor-cal punk rock.
Chimino Talk DKs and anything Jello, Minor Threat and anything Ian, Black Flag/Circle Jerks and anything Keith. As of 2024, trying to clean up pages that have been pieced together for years, creating continuity and ensuring verifiable references.
Coolfoolcoolfool Talk Major listener of many styles of punk, like noise rock, emo, grindcore, etc. I mostly try to add as much information (and references) to band, label, and album pages.
Craftyanthropologist Talk Fan of '90s-early 2000s punk, pop-punk, and folk-punk, among others, but mostly obsessive fact-checker and copy editor...I'll help out however I can.
CrowzRSA Talk Huge fan of the Ramones, been listening to them since 4th grade and playing their music on my Fender Mustang. Trying to add more information to everything in the band's scope, already expanded Ramones, Leave Home, and Rocket to Russia.
Derek R Bullamore Talk Mainly original UK punksters, like The Damned, The Clash, X-Ray Spex, The Stranglers, GBH, The Only Ones, Buzzcocks, The Adverts, Wreckless Eric; and post punk/new wave such as The Jam, The Boomtown Rats and errr Dr. Feelgood - probably shifted to pub rock here - what the hell "it's all rock and roll to me" !

Odetosleep Talk My music taste ranges from pop punk (Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance) to plain-old pop.
OliverTwisted Talk Swimming against the stream of anti-punk rock bias on CSD and AfD discussions. Non-mainstream does not mean non-notable. I'm going to look around a bit, before making major contributions.

SickofTalk Talk I'm really big on 80's Punk Rock and other related things such as zines, videos, clubs/venues and skateboarding from that era. Anything between 1980 to 1989 is where you'll see most of my edits but I do work on a bit of 70's and early 90's articles, as well. From regular Punk Rock to purist Punky-Hardcore (yes, even after 1986) to Thrashy Crossover to Gilman Street is what I like to listen to. Absolutely no NYHC or Youth Crew, though! Don't really listen to any newer music so you won't really see me edit any articles dealing with that stuff. You can probably guess where I get my username from. Some of my favorite bands would be: Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, Adrenalin O.D., Screeching Weasel, Crimpshrine, Buzzcocks, Isocracy, The Lookouts, The Clash, Operation Ivy, Bad Religion, Suicidal Tendencies, Sex Pistols, Descendents, Life Sentence and, of course, The Ramones.
Silverskylines Talk I'm getting into the old-school 70's/80's hardcore and avant-garde punk outfit. I can do a lot for 2000's hardcore/melodic hardcore bands: Underoath, Rise Against, etc. Basically, whatever the hell comes to mind.
SkaterLife Talk Mainly the mainstream bands nowadays such as, Pierce the Veil or Bring me the Horizon
