New Chifeng Ar Horqin Airport

Dear Zanhe, I noticed that IATA just added a new airport, namely Chifeng Ar Horqin Airport (IATA: AEQ) (see https://www.iata.org/publications/Pages/code-search.aspx), but I cannot find any reference on Wikipedia about it. You could maybe help me to find some reference on the Chinese net, so that we can then create the corresponding Wikipedia page? The coordinates should be around 43.87042°N 120.15958°E / 43.87042; 120.15958, but I cannot find any visible hint of an airport around there (both on Bing Maps and Google Maps). However, you did change military and politician priority to "low", which is ridiculous given that he was the person who united and ruled China for the first time in history, and he achieved it using military force. Qilu culture

I noticed, when reviewing your article for DYK, that An Zuozhang was an expert on Qilu (Shangdong) culture. Google tells me that Shangdong is promoting Qilu culture, but the only place I found information about it in English was the website of a metal products company. @HouseOfChange: Yeah, Qilu is a literary name for Shandong, originating from the ancient states of Qi and Lu. There are a ton of historical and cultural topics that need to be written about China. I've been to Shandong twice and seen many archaeological and historic sites there, most of which do not have English articles. Currently I'm focused on writing biographies of prominent modern people, but I do plan to eventually return to writing more about history and archaeology, which are my true interests. -Zanhe (talk) 05:06, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

Yu Baofa - primary sources & COI

Hi Zanhe, I'm the editor of Dr Yu Wikipedia page, I would like to discuss with you on how to make improve the page so that I can improve myself in Wikipedia. I read primary sources wiki page and I think most of the references sources from Dr Yu are online & offline journals. I believe those journals are considered as reliable sources?

Odd inconsistencies

As I can't really ask in the help desk or the village pump I thought you might know these things, I noticed that the article "Vietnamese people" is exclusively about us Kinh people and excludes other ethnic groups while I can't find a WP:COMMONNAME rationale for this. While the articles "Han Chinese" and "Chinese people" are different. Also both articles include numbers for the Netherlands and while the Han article uses numbers by the Taiwanese government which tracks Han numbers overseas the Vietnamese people (Kinh) article uses the CBS (and as I can read Dutch I know that) it doesn't use ethnic groups but nationalities, a Gin from China would be "Chinese" while a Hoa from Vietnam from be "Vietnamese". So how can such major inconsistencies come about across articles about similar topics? @Donald Trung: Inconsistency is common on Wikipedia, especially for non-Western topics that do not attract many experienced editors. What content each article covers is largely determined by its main author(s). A word like "Vietnamese" can have different definitions in different contexts. It could be narrowly defined on an ethnic basis as the Kinh people, wherever they live; or it could be broadly defined on a citizenship basis, which includes the dozens of non-Kinh peoples native to modern Vietnam. One option is to have two articles like Han Chinese and Chinese people, with the current Vietnamese people renamed to Kinh people; another is to expand Vietnamese people to include coverage of minority groups native to Vietnam. -Zanhe (talk) 20:12, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

I've just deleted a draftspace article of this name:

There is a zh.wikipedia article about this person, but my Chinese is very limited and I can't find anything in English in reliable sources.
For people watching: there is a disambiguation page Zhang Yu - the "Yu" may be a number of hanzi, each with different tones in Mandarin aka Standard Chinese.

@Shirt58: The zh-wiki article is about the Yuan dynasty poet. I googled the Chinese name "张雨" but couldn't find any notable figure with that name other than the poet. So yeah, go ahead and create the article Zhang Yu (poet) (traditional 張雨) (simplified 张雨). I would swoop on creating this article like the seagulls on St Kilda Beach eating the hot chips left behind by picnickers if I could find references in English. Just read it, and I think it's ridiculous to consider her OSA bio an unreliable source for her notability as an OSA fellow and former president. The OSA is a highly prestigious academic organization with 20,000 scientist members from all over the world. It they published false credentials about a former president, it would immediately become a huge scandal. OSA presidents and fellows are considered notable per WP:NACADEMIC (#3 and #6), and her OSA bio clearly confirmed both. So the only logic behind the rejection was that the source was not independent or reliable. "Not everyone knows that OSA is highly prestigious" - an OSA recognition is considered a great honor even for a Nobel Prize winner, see NASA news. The problem is that most Wikipedians are focused on pop culture/sports/politics, which get constant coverage from commercial media trying to gain eyeballs, and have so little knowledge about academia and learned societies. List of restaurants in China

Would you be able to look at the April 3rd & March 31 contributions by Special:Contributions/108.35.217.152 to the above article? This IP has been adding huge numbers of items to lists. Today they added many fine-dining restaurants to List of casual dining restaurant chains so I took a look at their contributions history and discovered they have added a ton of stuff to various lists. I saw one of the lists was restaurants in China and thought maybe you could do a reality check to see if their additions appear helpful or not? I recently submitted the article "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Aqua_Data_Studio". Before I submitted this article, I read carefully the various online documents that describe the submission process for Wikipedia.

The article submission was rejected. I can certainly accept that in itself. You left the reason "This topic is not sufficiently notable for inclusion in Wikipedia.". Again, I can certainly accept that in itself, although I was hoping that this article would overcome the threshold. However, you left the comment "Article was previously deleted as not notable, see "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Aqua_Data_Studio".

Does this mean that you rejected this article because a different article with the same name but different content was rejected in 2010? The article that I submitted is completely different from the article that was rejected in 2010. There is no connection between the two articles except for the fact that they share the same name and refer to the same software.

If you actually made their decision based on the content of the article that I submitted rather than what happened to the other article in 2010, then I can certainly accept your decision. However, from the comment that you left, I wonder whether this may not be the case.

I am very much impressed by your contributions to Wikipedia, and I am humbled that you took the time to review my submission, regardless of the outcome.

@Dbexpert: I rejected the draft because the topic was previously determined as non-notable after an AFD discussion. The draft does not include in-depth third-party coverage to demonstrate its notability, and most of the included sources are published by the company itself and not independent. I did not base my decision on the deleted article itself, which I have no access to. If you can find reliable third-party sources that discuss the significance of the software in some depth, please add them to the draft and resubmit it. Conjecture about a hook

@Mandarax: I'm not a mathematician and don't know for sure, but it doesn't seem to be the same conjecture. Wu Jihan

Hi Zanhe, I noticed you just moved Wu Jihan as per Chinese naming convention. Of course, the article is now in its correct order, however I believe that in En Wikipedia, WP:COMMONNAME breaks Chinese order as per WP:ZHNAME. He uses "Jihan Wu" as his name in Twitter, the company he is associated with used "Jihan Wu" in their English press releases. Search results show both. "Jihan Wu" has over 10x as many results - of course there is no telling if that is all in relation to the same person. In the past few days, I noticed that, Jisoo, Lisa, Nayeon, Rose and Jeongyeon's pages have been resurrected. @FakeMaknae: Not a dumb question at all. The creation of Blackpink member pages is the result of discussions on Talk:Lisa (Thai singer) and Talk:Blackpink, and the great work by DanielleTH and others. It's my opinion that all artists in Gallup poll's top 20 idols list satisfy WP:ENTERTAINER #2, as Gallup is indisputably reliable and quantitative evidence. Momo probably does not yet meet WP:NSINGER but that's not required (see the deletion review for Harry Styles from 2013). If you're planning to write articles for Momo and others, it's important to use multiple strong sources from the very beginning (e.g. no YouTube or K-pop sites), otherwise they may still be challenged. -Zanhe (talk) 18:52, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

@FakeMaknae: That's not necessary as it's been almost three years since the previous discussion. As long as enough new sources and info are added to establish notability (such as the Gallup poll) it should be fine. I found some in-depth coverage of Momo in English ([6] [7]), and plan to work on restoring the article (also Sana's) in the next few days, after finishing a couple other articles I've been working on. As the article already exists (and is in terrible shape), you can simply overwrite most the of content with what you've written. @Zanhe: No, the Jiangnan suzhu is a part of the string and wind music in China, I just did the whole things about Chinese string music in my article, therefore I think this two topics are different. And the Jiangnan sizhu is a special name just for the style of string and wind music in Jiangnan in China. Also, Jiangnan is just one of place which have better development of string music in China so I did some introductions of Jiangnan sizhu in my article, but I still think this two articles did two different introductions to two different identifications.

@DGG: I have no problem with having an article about Chinese stringed music, but I was really confused by Lwsswlp's shifting explanation of the draft's topic, and the reason why the flute was included in an article supposedly about stringed music. Jiangnan sizhu literally means silk/string and bamboo instruments (and music) of Jiangnan, which matches the lead sentence of the draft. Mexican people of Chinese descent

Hi Zanhe. Hope all is well! I recently wrote an article about a Mexican drug lord of Chinese descent. I figured you might be interested in it based on your update here. I don't know when, but I plan to write an article in the future about the Chinese immigrants who came to Mexico in the 1800s and kick-started Mexico's drug history by introducing opium near western Mexico. @MX: Thanks for writing the interesting article! Zhenli Ye Gon got quite a bit of attention in Chinese media, but I've never read about Alfonso Lam Liu. It's probably because the former was born in China and moved to Mexico, while the latter is Mexican-born. I may be able to help if I can find the Chinese names of those people, otherwise it's really hard to search Chinese-language sources. Wade-Giles question

Hello! Hope you are doing well. I wanted to ask you what the standard is for Wade-Giles on Wikipedia. Is/was there a historical document (like the Hanyu Pinyin Fang'an for Hanyu Pinyin) that is/was followed for passport names in Taiwan and etc other purposes to generate Wade-Giles forms? The reason I'm asking is that my edit which gave 'tih⁴' as the Wade-Giles for '棣' ([9]) was rooted in Wiktionary's choice to give 'tih⁴' as the Wade-Giles for '棣' (click 'Expand' on the drop-down box under Pronunciation on the 棣 page). @Geographyinitiative: In Wade-Giles, [i] is represented as "i", not "ih". "ih" is only used to represent syllabic consonants, e.g., pinyin zhi would be WG chih, ri would be jih, and so on. Moving pages for disambiguation

Hi there! I noticed you recently moved the Liu Shiying to disambiguate the athlete from the architect. There were quite a lot of links to that target that needed changing to the new athlete title. I've fixed all the links now, but in future can you fix the links for any articles you move from a main title? There is no benefit to the reader if a page move breaks dozens of links across many articles, so if there are a bothersome number of incoming links to fix its better to leave the original article as it is and place a hatnote for the new article with the same base name. (I suppose I saw some benefit in learning a little about 20th century architecture in China, though!) Thanks! SFB 21:29, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

I have restored the information, but I want you to know about this if you are interested so that stronger measures can be taken to defend the place of the native language of the Fuzhou area as it is represented on English Wikipedia. @Geographyinitiative: I agree with you that linguistic heritage should be protected. Unfortunately, the problem with most Chinese varieties/dialects is that there's no widely accepted standard romanization scheme. Even Cantonese has multiple competing schemes, each with its pros and cons, and none of them ends up being the standard. Please also read WP:RIGHT WRONGS and WP:ADVOCACY. @Piotrus: Yes, definitely notable: lots of results from Google books, including Japan Telecom Newsletter which calls it one of Japan's largest consumer electronics and online retailers, and an Economist article from 1996 (no preview) describing it as Japan's largest PC retailer with annual sales of $1 billion. BTW, sorry for the sometimes harsh language I used in the AFDs. I was just frustrated that you'd so casually nominate them for deletion and I had to spend time expanding articles that I had little interest in just to save them from deletion. -Zanhe (talk) 04:52, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

We all had worse days, I am glad we can agree we both are trying to help. I used to be an inclusionist, before I realized the scope of the paid-for spam problem (see my essay WP:CORPSPAM, and long story short, many marketing companies and a horde of freelancers make it their goal to convert Wikipedia into an advertising platform). It is, of course, time consuming, to see if an entry on a company meets NCORP or not, particularly when majority of sources are in languages one does not speak, particularly when dealing with scripts that one does not recognize. I try my best with WP:BEFORE, but there's always a possibility I miss something. You mention, for example, said GBooks hits, a lot of them are travel guides, some self-published, some reliable. I'll note that we do have Wikivoyage, which can contain tourist-useful entries on otherwise non-notable business entities. The Economist is certainly a reliable source, sadly their online database is only for 1997+, and the site they claim has their older works (https://www.cengage.com) doesn't seem to let me find TE articles (well, at least in the ~2 minutes I was prepared to spend on this particular search there). The snippet view we get is not sufficient that THE covered Sofmap except of mention in passing. Google Scholar, likewise, shows quite a few hits, but they all appear to be mentions in passing. Now, in all honestly, I spend close to 10 minutes researching this, more than sufficient for WP:BEFORE, and I don't see any in-depth coverage of it. Many mentions in passing, plus TE calling it 'the biggest retailer', makes it borderline. As such, I am not going to nominate it right now, but I feel a notability tag is justified, until someone finds better sources, justifying its removal. If this tag is removed I feel there would be no other choice by an AfD trial by fire. PS. @Piotrus: Your definition of SIGCOV seems to be limited to "English-language sources that are available online", which is quite problematic for East Asian topics. From my experience with Chinese topics, even a passing mention in a major English publication is frequently an indication of significant coverage in Chinese-language publications, most of which are not accessible online (including almost all books and most magazines and newspapers). I'm less familiar with Japanese topics as I don't know the language, but I suspect the situation to be similar. For example, the ja-wiki article for Sofmap (ja:ソフマップ) is 15 years old and contains tons of info with dozens of sources (although some are primary). I know CORPSPAM is a huge issue and I've rejected numerous spam articles at WP:AFC, but from my experience (I've been watching User:AlexNewArtBot/ChinaSearchResult for years), it's almost non-existent for Chinese companies (although there are exceptions such as this). It's probably because their target audience does not generally read English and Wikipedia is blocked by the Chinese firewall. In fact, the main issue is the exact opposite, that people here know so little about Asia that they're unable to recognize extremely notable topics. For example, even after Pinduoduo, a Chinese e-commerce giant, went public on NASDAQ in one of the largest IPOs of 2018 (market cap $30+ billion), its draft article was rejected on AFC as unnotable, and I had to rescue the draft. -Zanhe (talk) 01:03, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

@Thsmi002: Thanks for creating the article! I've searched Google and Baidu, but have been unable to find any information about her in Chinese sources. Her surname Chin is not a standard pinyin spelling, and it could be any of a number of common Chinese names, including Jin, Qin, and Chen; and it may also be her married name, which is a Western, not Chinese, custom. The sole official language of China

@Geographyinitiative: I'm no expert in legal matters, but this document does seem to list Putonghua as the sole official language of China (although I'm not sure if 通用语言 is the same as official language). Many minority languages are also mentioned, but they're not considered 通用. (Interestingly, I just realized the Chinese government considers both Kra–Dai and Miao–Yao as part of the Sino-Tibetan family, which is quite different from what I've learned from Western linguistics books.) -Zanhe (talk) 06:36, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

The USA doesn't have a dejure official language (at the national level). [11] There should be precise, clear and authoritative English language materials translated and published by the organs of the PRC government saying something like, "Putonghua (or whatever word they use) is the official language of the entire PRC" or whatever they might say. They would probably tell us what their official language is in English language documents if they wanted us to understand things in that way. In the absence of those official documents, we are left with a nation-state that is definitely promoting Putonghua but that also uses other languages in some official business and on its currency. In my ideal world, I want Wikipedia to tell people exactly what the facts are. When there is a "blank" or lack of specific and clear facts, or if China doesn't quite conform to Western legal and political concepts, it's just silly to make suppositions and try to cram the 'square' China peg into a 'round' Western hole as it were. Hello, I have been away from wiki for sometime but I just saw the recent deletion discussion about Jihyo. I noticed there was some talk about making a draft instead and that you tried to revamp the page, however the outcome was still delete. There has actually been a draft at Draft:Park Ji-hyo for a long time which I had to decline due to really major sourcing issues. Maybe you can continue your work there?. @Redalert2fan: I've added the stuff I wrote to the draft. Unfortunately AFDs are often dominated by people who know little about Asian topics. Three of the delete votes are actually from people who had nominated Lu Han, Chou Tzu-yu, and Kang Daniel for deletion. They couldn't even recognize the notability of people who're household names in their respective countries! This is why Jihyo has pages on a dozen Wikipedias but not English. I'm usually pretty successful with rescuing Chinese topics from AFD as I can dig up lots of Chinese sources. This is the first time I tried to rescue a Korean article, but was hampered by my lack of language skills. You know, I thought about if for quite some time and I think I can agree wit that. At first I was against every article for persons without any solo work (songs / acting etc.), and most of the time those pages had really poor references. Then you pointed out that for example black pink has a huge social media following making them notable enough, while at first I thought that alone wouldn't pass it seems that it worked out and definitely changed my opinion to not look at idols as only part of their groups, but as entertainers and socially recognized people. Then for some twice members Gallup poll was provided for notability, this alone might be a bit weak as a source for why someone needs a page, just like that everyone with a large(r) following on Instagram or YouTube doesn't need a page. However, since these girls are also part of twice, one of the most populair groups right now it did seem appropriate to me for including them. While I would generally still stray away from making a page for every idol just because they are celebrities/have some fans I do think that twice has become so populair that the last reaming 3 members can be included on Wikipedia. They are after all the only 3 members of the big 3 groups that don't have a page yet, though WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS still applies. They don't need a page because all the other members have a page, they need a page because like the other members they are notable enough. As long as as reliable sources are used (supported by WP:KO/RS) I can see that at least Jihyo is notable enough. It still might be hard to get this over since so many people seem to disagree with this, whether this is by people not understanding, being ignorant, holding a higher value or maybe they are right and we are wrong I do not feel like accepting it myself at the moment. Yes I think all the twice members can have a page, but it probably is not worth the effort until they have released solo work. @Redalert2fan: Hi. Sorry to butt in but I saw you reviewed Draft:Park Jihyo. I understand that just because a group is popular, we should not create a page for each of the members. For Jihyo's case, I believe the information provided already proves her notability. The song collaboration she did for Inkigayo Music Crush is an original song that she recorded with 2 other artists, and it charted on Gaon Music Chart. This can already be counted as an activity outside of her group. She might not be on Gallup Korea, but for the monthly individual girl group ranking she is there. I put it there because I saw that it is also specificed on BP's Rose wiki page. Jihyo haven't made it to Gallup poll yet since her debut, yes. But she is already known internationally. @Redalert2fan: Thanks for the thoughtful response. I went through a similar thought process as you have. I cared little about pop culture and rejected multiple drafts of K-pop stars at WP:AFC, but soon noticed that they get re-created over and over again by many different editors, which is very unusual for Asian topics. After doing some research (including consulting my own kids), I've got to realize how wildly popular these top K-pop stars are, even here in North America. Calling them not notable solely because of WP:SINGER feels like denying the notability of John Lennon in 1969, before the Beatles disbanded. I would suggest asking for a third opinion at the Articles for Creation talk page. I think that you have misunderstood the rule about cross-namespace redirects. Cross-namespace redirects from article namespace are discouraged. I have been moving sandboxes to draft space, which is standard practice, for years, and have only suppressed the redirect when the conditions for redirect suppression are met. Because sandboxes are sometimes reviewed in user space before being moved into draft space, redirects are normally kept. If you have any questions, please ask at the Articles for Creation talk page. Central committee age sorts

Considering that most of them are in their 50s and 60s, it will be decades before they begin to die in large numbers. Unsourced Claims about the Voynich manuscript and Chinese

Sorry for contacting you so frequently, but I have just now deleted a large section of material on the Voynich manuscript page which was comprised of three paragraphs and an image which were nothing but unsourced claims about alleged connections between Asiatic languages and the Voynich manuscript. The content had been on the website essentially unchallenged since 2004.

Claims about Media Influence in Taiwan

Hey, I agree with your undo, but I'd like to ask- is there a page about claims concerning Chinese media influence in Taiwan on the Mandarin Chinese or English Wikipedia? Even if it's just a page about rumors and conspiracies, I have seen a LOT of claims by the DPP about Chinese influence in Taiwanese media (and you saw the quote from Professor Yu), and I'm thinking it should be covered on English Wikipedia. I thought about it for some time and the draft has been improved greatly with some good solid references. I think you know my personal opinion that these should have been accepted before, but I am worried about people yet again questioning the notability outside of the group. I can't give you a clear answer for now, its on the edge for me. I will say that I have seen the submission (before the ping) and purposely am avoiding accepting this one because of that, if I saw no problems I would have accepted it right away. In fairness, i'd argue that Draft: Mina (Japanese singer) is at a much much higher level of quality than the old Jihyo article which got deleted. And even at that time, you both had wise words here: User_talk:Zanhe/2019#Jihyo. The criteria from Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Entertainers only requires that she "Has a large fan base or a significant "cult" following." Surely being named in the headlines of the BBC, South China Morning Post, Metro, and The Korea Times is evidence of having a large fan base or significant cult following. If you don't wish to publish, could i please request that you post the comments you just made here: Draft_talk:Mina_(Japanese_singer)#Can_we_publish?, as at least that will get the consensus ball rolling with a couple of opinions in favour of publishing and allow people to object to your opinions if they so desire. Thanks. It's funny, im not even like a huge twice fan or anything, i just thought it was weird that they didn't all have their own articles so i thought it was worth pursuing. It just strikes me as odd that Twice members with hundreds of millions of fans don't have wikipedia articles whilst unknown musicians with tiny followings do have articles. It's hard to know why this is, but i think it's because an unknown rapper can get an interview with an english-language music magazine fairly easily -- whereas kpop artists don't/can't. What about Malaysia Airlines Flight 17? It was shot down over Ukraine but is included in "2014 in Malaysia" and "2014 in the Netherlands". Great question! This crash caused political events to occur in Malaysia and the Netherlands (hence "XXXX in a given country"), but the crash itself was in Ukrainian territory (the Dutch investigated it because the Ukrainians delegated it to them). Hence it would only fit "crashes in Ukraine" but it was still an event affecting people in other countries. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:47, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

@WhisperToMe: I don't think a political event is required for a crash to be considered to have occurred in a country. Air France Flight 447 crashed far from France, was not a political event, but is still included in "2009 in France". @Biografer: Thanks for creating the article! As you can see from the source, his primary job is a law professor, i.e., a scholar, and lawyer is his secondary profession. Chinese-language sources almost all refer to him as a legal scholar (法学家). In fact, China Today named him one of the 100 most influential legal scholars of the country, see [14]. Stance on Geographic Landscape Images in Infoboxes in Chinese provinces

Recently, I have been starting to see editors putting geographic landscape images in the infoboxes of Chinese provinces, and I have disagreed with the use of them as an image alone does not represent the province at best. In addition, many articles on provinces or states (as in U.S. states), do not have these images in their infoboxes. All I believe is that these infobox images create a mess in the article. However, people started putting these images in a few months ago, and before that, there were no geographic images in the infobox, so it is probable that it is a trend. Is this a Wikipedia guideline that I have not heard about, or is this a decision on the individual editors themselves? I am not going to WikiProject China on this issue, because I am convinced that nobody in that project is active, and that I basically see you as the main representative of China's articles in Wikipedia. (On another note, are you Shanghainese? Za(a)nhe is Shanghainese for Shanghai. Just curious.) - 祝好，Josephua^(聊天) 16:17, 14 December 2019 (UTC)

@Josephua: Sorry about the late reply. There's been a lot of catching up to do after the end of the holidays. I'm not aware of any guidelines about this issue, but I agree with you that it's not possible to represent an entire province with a single picture (or even a collage of images), and it's better to leave photos out of infoboxes. Articles about Chinese people

I noticed that User:CaradhrasAiguo was deleting birth place "China" in articles about Chinese people, I don't agree with that. Articles about American people use "birthplace 'U.S.'", articles about Japanese people use "birthplace 'China'", why articles about Chinese people can only show district, city or county, province at "birthplace"? Except for Beijing and Shanghai, most foreigners don't know that Hubei or Gansu is a province of China.--Huangdan2060 (talk) 01:15, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
