The article itself is long enough and new enough. I cannot check the source for the caterpillar dermatitis, as it is in Chinese. The article itself has a very limited number of sources (4), I would like to see a few more sources added ideally. In any case, I would keep the hook focused on 1 thing, so either the caterpillar outbreak, or the HIV research. I would suggest something like:
- ALT1:... that Chinese epidemiologist Kang Laiyi determined that caterpillars of the moth Euproctis similis xanthocampa were responsible for an outbreak of dermatitis in Shanghai that affected half a million people?

- @Achaea: Thanks for your review. Many Chinese media outlets published obituaries for him, but most of them contain very similar info, so I only chose two most detailed articles and didn't bother including others, which I don't think add more to the article. I included two facts in the hook because caterpillar dermatitis sounds more interesting but he's best known for fighting HIV/AIDS. I'm fine with chopping off half of it, but I'd prefer the hook to be more succinct, such as:
- ALT2: ... that Chinese epidemiologist Kang Laiyi investigated a caterpillar dermatitis outbreak which affected half a million people?

- @Zanhe: Are there any other independent sources, e.g. articles at the time of outbreak? I am unable to find any other sources that confirm the outbreak or his role in it, would like to see an additional source if possible, or have some idea of how reliable the first source is (which I am unable to, because I can't speak the language, sorry!). I do like the second alt better, I agree that it's a bit catchier than the one I proposed. Achaea (talk) 14:58, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Achaea: Unfortunately Chinese publications from the 1970s are not generally available online. I've found a 1987 paper from a medical journal which mentions Kang Laiyi and the 1972 dermatitis outbreak, but the full paper is behind a paywall. If you're uncomfortable with relying on a single source for the hook, we could use the HIV/AIDS part of the original hook, which is mentioned in every source about him (including the English book), as that's what he's best known for. -Zanhe (talk) 09:28, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Zanhe: That is fair enough, I think using the HIV hook would be a good compromise. Would you agree with this hook? I replaced battling, as it seemed like he himself was affected by HIV, rather than him researching it. - @Zanhe: That is fair enough, I think using the HIV hook would be a good compromise. Would you agree with this hook?
