Digital Anthropology research

[edit]

Hello Rich Farmbrough, My name is Stephanie Barker and I am a student at the University of Colorado Boulder. I am currently enrolled in a Digital Anthropology class, which attempts to answer how the digital world affects culture and how culture affects the digital world. For my final project I am doing an ethnography on women Wikipedia users and as a member of the WikiProject Women page I was hoping I could ask you some questions about your experiences editing Wikipedia pages. 1. Have you ever been locked into an intense editing war? If yes, please explain the situation to me. 2. How did you become interested in editing Wikipedia pages and did you have any initial fears/hesitations when you started editing pages? 3. Have you ever been a victim of a mass deletion or other vandalism on Wikipedia? If yes, please explain the situation to me. 4. How would you describe your gender? 5. Is there anything else you would like to share with me about your experiences as a Wikipedia editor? Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I would like you to know that I am only sharing my research with my professor and the other students in my class. If you would like me to send you a copy of my final project, I would be more than happy to! Sincerely, Stelba90 (talk) 00:30, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Rich, could you check out this page and see if it has enough info to remove the tag. If not, what else is needed. Also since I've verified her date of birth could you remove the tag for no date of birth. Congrats on the "drama free days." Cheers,Beth Wellington (talk) 15:34, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me. The birth year is simply a question of changing the category. When I make 1000 days, or maybe 1001, I'll have a party on my talk page. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 18:14, 9 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Proposed deletion of List of characters in The Canterbury Tales

[edit]

The article List of characters in The Canterbury Tales has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

An ultimately empty list, no information not provided by the main article.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Abuse filters

[edit]

Hi, because of an irritating AbuseFilter bug, we (Kaldari, MusikAnimal and I) are going to do an update next week that will affect some of your filters. We hope we'll fix all affected filters ourselves, but we're of course grateful if you want to help us. The issue is explained here; the current plan is here. In any case, we wanted you to be aware what's happening, and you're very welcome to help out of course. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 11:58, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've sent you an email with more details. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 12:03, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I guess action stations will be Weds and Thurs afternoon (PST) next week, which fits in with evening here, there's only about 74 rules affected, so should be fairly trivial to fix.

list as

[edit]

In my experience variations lead to undetected duplications. Moreover, AWB's plugin detects all parameters with spaces as errors. This will needs a serious rework to fix it. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:06, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Magioladitis It's easy enough to look for list *as or {{{listas|{{{list as|}}}}}} isn't it? All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 08:09, 13 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Parameters with space will lead to people adding double spaces etc. Or have listas and list as on the same template. I don't understand why this change is necessary to a template with millions of transclusions. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:10, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Don't use "list as" in the biography banner. It is not recognized by any banner. All banners only recognize "listas". Bgwhite (talk) 08:14, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It was when I used it. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 08:44, 13 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Because we use readable code where possible. There is no such word as "listas".
As to double spaces, they will be picked up by the category that monitors unrecognised parameters.
All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 08:18, 13 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Bgwhite is right on that. We also that al the other banners that inherit the sort from WPBIO. It's true that "listas" is two words but it is well established as parameters and we have many bots running out there. Changes in that level should be discussed first. Especially when by experience I am pretty sure that parameters variations leads to undesired situations. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:21, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Where do you go to discuss this. This unilateral move to millions of transclusions should be discussed first. they will be picked up by the category that monitors unrecognised parameters Great even more work to do. Bgwhite (talk) 08:23, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yet another minor argument is T99283. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:24, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There are three parameters that are recognised by all WikiProject banners, these are |category=, |listas= and |small=. Other than Milhist (which is different from the majority of project banners in many ways, including that it interprets |category= differently and doesn't recognise |listas= at all), I know of no exceptions, and none where a parameter alias exists for these three. To introduce an exception is undesirable, since it then means that a param cannot be copied directly from one WikiProject banner transclusion to another. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:24, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Copied to discussion. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 09:26, 13 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Hello. Why did you change reqphoto to Photo requested please? Is this a new/better format? Does it make a difference? reqphoto seems quicker to type, but I could make an effort if it really makes a difference. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 12:31, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There is no need, it has exactly the same effect. I prefer the latter as less obscure, but it is a marginal difference. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 15:49, 13 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]

blp = yes with living = no

[edit]

you seem to be tagging many articles that have living=no as blp=yes [1] and introducing duplicate |1= or duplicate |blp=yes. [2] not sure how you are planning to clean up the living=no with blp=yes. a bot will most likely clean up the duplicate parameters, but it seems like a bad idea to add more more for the bots. Frietjes (talk) 22:03, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm planning to cross check the entire biography corpus for living/dead. However, I'm not sure where these extra blp=yes are coming from. The extra 1= is probably just a typo, but I'll check. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 22:06, 14 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]
I have cleaned up about 125 just in the last hour. You could add a regexp

/\|[ ]*1[ ]*=[ ]*\|/|

and

/(\|[ ]*blp[ ]*=[ ]*yes(?:\{\{[^{}]*\}\}|[^{}])*)\|[ ]*blp[ ]*=[ ]*yes/$1

after you are finished processing to clean up after yourself. I would also add /(\|[ ]*blp[ ]*=[ ]*yes(?:\{\{[^{}]*\}\}|[^{}])*)\{\{(?:WikiProject|WP)[ ]*[Bb]iography[^{}]*\|[ ]*living[ ]*=[ ]*n)/$1

to avoid adding blp=yes with living=no. Frietjes (talk) 22:17, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm fixing any remaining ones. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 22:20, 14 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Rich please be more careful when using AWB. You seem to be editing too fast to check these. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:50, 14 August 2016 (UTC) Further to the above I am checking a million pages for that error now. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 11:52, 15 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Authority control

[edit]

Hi, I'd like to have {{Authority control}} added to all Women in Red biographies, if this is not on the page already. The list of articles would be the bios on the WiR metrics' pages, going back to July 2015. Is this something AWB can do, and if you, something you would consider doing? --Rosiestep (talk) 01:15, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly. I'll attempt to have a look this evening. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 07:20, 15 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]
I think T.seppelt does that. I really don't care, who does that, just noting --Edgars2007 (talk/contribs) 08:24, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There is a bot adding/modifying Authority control. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:29, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I have a script and the approval for it. I didn't run it in a while. I'll have a look at it. --T.seppelt (talk) 10:56, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rich, did it work? Are there still many articles left? Maybe it would be good if you could post a list or categories where I can find the pages you were referring to. Warm regards, -- T.seppelt (talk) 06:10, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User:T.seppelt Yes I grabbed the pages from the metrics list. I have added the tempalte to about 10% of the articles. I'll upload a list of the rest soon, and ping you. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 11:31, 23 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Bio lists

[edit]

I think Biography lists should be assessed as |class=list Category:List-Class biography articles. Then no listas will be required. -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:08, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A |listas= is useful, as otherwise they all end up under L. So, Talk:List of 1747 Holy Roman Empire incumbents has |listas=1747 Holy Roman Empire Incumbents. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:18, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I will ensure they are all set to |class=list. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 11:54, 15 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]
What do you think about Deaths in May 2004? I would have thought this is better under "Deaths" than "May". Ideally "Deaths 2004-05". All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 11:56, 15 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]
I think that can sort naturally (no |listas=) - it's not a "List of Foobars" article. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:24, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

AWB and position of templates

[edit]

Hi, in this edit you moved {{EngvarB}} and {{Use dmy dates}} from the top to the bottom of the article. The documentation for "Use dmy dates" clearly says that it goes at the top; I know of nothing to suggest that "EngvarB" doesn't go at the top. I think this is yet another case where AWB seems to do some "fixes" with no justification. I've raised this at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser. PamD 17:40, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's me moving it to the bottom, manually, which is where {{Use dmy dates}}. I have always placed these templates at the bottom, they are trivial style templates that we should not be polluting the page source with. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 17:44, 17 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Template_talk:Use_dmy_dates#Placement is the almost deserted discussion about placement. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 17:51, 17 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Thank you

[edit]

I really do appreciate you adding the listas parameter. Adding listas was one of the first things I did on Wikipedia. It sort of is like the first job one gets out of college, in which one always remembers, either fondly or in nightmares. It is nice seeing you constantly on my watchlist fixing listas. I do have a bot approved to add listas, but only for standard western names. If you have a group of standard names that you want the bot to edit on, just give a yell. Bgwhite (talk) 19:29, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I am doing this, to some extent, in memory of User:JimCubb who did an enormous amount of work on this backlog. I know there are others who are working on it too. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 20:31, 17 August 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Broken WikiProjects

[edit]

See Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:WikiProject ANE, Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:WikiProject LoCE and Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:WikiProject Pottery. The transclusions are all due to your edits like this. By not checking before saving, you are going against WP:AWB#Rules of use no. 1. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:20, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the first group and created a redirect for the second to clarify that its a WikiProject template. In the case of the WP LoCE template I really think that needs to be moved and renamed to be standardized like the other WikiProject templates seem to reflect. I understand that technically these edits broke those templates but they also identified a couple minor errors that are easily corrected and probably would not have otherwise been noticed. So no harm done IMO. Cheers! GustavoRomeo68 (talk) 21:37, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, my request was not to fix the redlinks by creating redirects (which I could easily have done myself), but to find out from Rich why those perfectly good transclusions of e.g. {{WP ANE}} were altered to redlinks e.g. {{WikiProject ANE}} and not left alone. WP:NOTBROKEN doesn't just mean 'do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken', it also means 'don't break working links even if those are redirects'. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:43, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
