Wikipedia 1.0 project

Hi Democratics! Thanks for signing up for the Wikipedia 1.0 project. The project has been dormant for several years - other than the bot which manages the assessment data for WikiProjects. This was because we lost our lead programmer and didn't get anyone to take his place. However, we have a new group of people now involved, and they have begun work on preparing a new selection. They're doing a demo at the WikiConference in San Diego later this week, and if all goes well we should be able to produce some new selections and we'll need people to help. I'm giving the new project a tentative name of "School Selection". We seem now to have working software! This takes a seed list of WikiProjects (tailored for use in elementary schools, for example) then looks at links in their top-ranked articles, then ranks those until a selection has been created at the 1 GB, 3 GB or 10 GB level. We'll be putting these selections onto laptops going into schools in Latin America and Haiti to begin with, though it will be available on Kiwix for general download. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! Hi Democratics, I noticed you have been relisting things at AfD, which is fine, but can you please make sure you move the transclusion from the old date to the new one as instructed in WP:RELIST. For example Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ElDewrito is currently transcluded in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2016 October 13; it should be moved to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2016 October 21. You go to the log for where it is currently listed and comment out the transclusion like this, then you copy the transclusion on the log for the day it should be relisted on like this. So for the ones you did on 17th, they should be commented out on the log they were in and added to the log for the 17th. You need to do this manually as the script will add them to todays log. Also, AfDs are normally not relisted a third time except in some special cases, and they are never relisted more than three times. Sarahj2107 (talk) 12:17, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

AfD:Craig Brittain (entrepreneur)

Hi. I'm a bit confused as to why this article was relisted in AfD. It seems to me that the consensus was very clear that the article should be deleted. There was only one valid Keep vote from the person who created the article, plus two fake keep votes created by the same person that were revoked. Ten or so are in favour of deletion, only one in favour of keeping it. Much of the content is also duplicated at IsAnybodyDown? which recently went through AfD with a strong Keep. Can you reconsider the relisting of the AfD and move it in the direction of the apparent consensus? Thanks. Shritwod (talk) 11:50, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

@Shritwod: As said in the template above, "consensus (agreement) is gauged based on the merits of the arguments, not by counting votes." I believe the discussion is yet to be considered as concluded, though I do find AManInWikipedia's edits disturbing (it needs serious attention even though he was blocked for 31 hours). Lastly, I'm not an admin and therefore am not that confident in my actions. I suggest asking admin attention as one can better judge due to his/her greater experience. If you would care to enter the conversation, then we might actually know what your concerns are and address them. As it is, the "keep" argument is based largely in a "Wikipedia should change the rules" and "it's all paid editors against me" stance from the SPA article creator, amid his forged Keep !votes and false allegations of canvassing. Why did you relist the Israel World Cup articles?

Why did you relist Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Israel at the 2014 FIFA World Cup (2nd nomination)? There were about 8 delete votes and one keep vote, from the page creator. The only issue is whether the redirect should be deleted or discussed at RfD, and that's a procedural issue. Smartyllama (talk) 19:24, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

I have to agree with Smartyllama; even though AfD is not based on counting the !votes, the one Keep !vote was not based on existing policy, guidelines, and consensus. Please consider undoing your relisting. — Jkudlick • t • c • s 23:40, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

I read above in an above section that you're often not comfortable choosing consensus because you're not an admin. If that's the case, then please consider undoing your relisting as Jkudlick suggested and letting an admin decide whether to close it or not. March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. User group for Military Historians

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

Hello, Democratics. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

50,000 Destubbing Challenge Focus of the Week

Points can be earned through reviewing articles on the AutoCheck report, reviewing articles listed at WP:MILHIST/ASSESS, reviewing MILHIST-tagged articles at WP:GAN or WP:FAC, and reviewing articles submitted at WP:MILHIST/ACR. Service awards and barnstars are given for set points thresholds, and the top three finishers will receive further awards.
