AWB
[edit]I would like to use AWB to fix typos and perform cleanup, but am worried that the wider community would not allow me access to it. What do you think I should do? Thanks, --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 15:47, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
- Read the rule and the guide - be sure you understand why the various restrictions are there, then provided you are happy with that apply. There are some 4000 accounts approved so I doubt there should be much difficulty.
- When using AWB be aware that a lot of people consider an error made with AWB far more serious than one made by hand. (Of course if you made 300 copies of the same error and no good edits, they would have a point - but that's not what I mean.) I did an experiment to establish this, though I haven't fully analysed the results. A good deal of the time you save by using AWB will need to be re-invested into quality control.
- If you do decide to do typo fixing let me know and I will try and write up a few notes about how I approached that task.
- All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 16:18, 4 November 2015 (UTC).
- Sorry, just another thing: is it possible it could knacker my computer? --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 16:29, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hmm, well it is technically possible, but very unlikely, especially if you are just using it in the normal way. The only thing that I would be even remotely concerned about are intense disk activity or long and intense CPU usage. The first is only likely if you are doing a lot of work with data dumps, and the second if you were doing that or true bot-work. I have used AWB extremely intensively in the past, with no apparent ill effect.
- All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 16:38, 4 November 2015 (UTC).
- Okay, thanks again! --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 16:41, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Thank you in advance!

Squeeze paper
[edit]Hi. Please do not use a edit summary of "undid revision by ..." when you are actually adding new content and not undoing anything, as you did in Squeeze paper. It is not nice for the involved editor. Thank you - Nabla (talk) 10:01, 13 November 2015 (UTC)
- Apologies. I started with an undo to restore the external links section, then added the external link and restored the stub type. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 13:40, 13 November 2015 (UTC).
- Rich, please try to look at the edit again. AFAICS, the stub was corrected by Nabla. —Sladen (talk) 14:19, 13 November 2015 (UTC)
- Sladen, please try to read what I wrote again, slowly, and you will see that I never said otherwise. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 14:26, 13 November 2015 (UTC).
- Thank you, and yes, I often use a similar technique. In such cases I try and to be extra careful (because of the potential for upset) to include something that makes it clear that it's a positive development eg. "partial rv; […rationale…]. Undid … ". Would that be useful positive solution? —Sladen (talk) 17:21, 13 November 2015 (UTC)
- Quite possibly. I have had a bunch of these in the past few days, where someone or something has removed a section merely because it was empty. Believe it or not having to redo something because someone removed it is also "upsetting" and "not nice for the editor involved." I have great respect for stub-sorters, and would not wish to upset any of them. My assumption that they would understand what I did was clearly misplaced, but I don't think it was an unreasonable assumption. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 17:51, 13 November 2015 (UTC).

- Accepted. Thanks. I'd like to point that I am not "a stub sorter" I am user:Nabla, that happens to sort stubs once in a while. As I am not "them" in anyway, I do not know if "they" do understand something or not. Please do not assume anything about "them" based on me. I think I understood what you did, the point is that your summary does not reflect what you did, instead reflected badly on another editor. Please don't take me wrong, I do not want to pick any kind of fight. I also could have done better. Usually when I am sorting stubs I disconnect that from any other activity - that is, I do not correct or tag an article in the same edit. This time I did it, and so I am also responsible for the ensuing confusion. My apologies for that. Enjoy. - Nabla (talk) 02:04, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

The article Karen Arnold has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Edit filters
[edit]Hi! I'm trying to get some good edit filter for lvwiki, that catches vandalism. Wanted to ask - could you send me email with these filters code: 384, 279, 260, and 354. That will help catch some more besides those which are public - English phrases are common vandalism in Latvian. And want to take a look at the technical part of those filters. You don't need to worry - that information won't be used to screw up or make some big vandalisms at enwiki :) --Edgars2007 (talk/contribs) 17:55, 11 November 2015 (UTC)

- I have explained to you that a dead link is not a bogus source. Calling it a bogus source is skating very close to a personal attack. All the best: Rich Farmbrough
- Under BLP sources should be removed if they do not back up the claims. Your source does not even feature the article subject's name, therefore under WP:BLP it should be removed. There is no evidence that this source backed up the article claim now, or at any point in the past. isfutile:P (talk) 01:22, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

I have rechecked your source and I can confirm it does not feature any mention of Karen Arnold. Under WP:BLP a reliable source is needed to assert such a claim in a biography of a living person. isfutile:P (talk) 01:32, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
- Yes but it did feature such a mention. The page you looked at is https://www.gov.uk/queens-awards-for-enterprise - quite a different page written at quite a different time.
- The url http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?type=RESOURCES&itemId=1084954074&r.s=e&r.l1=1074404796&r.lc=en&r.l3=1084953735&r.l2=1074446322&r.i=1084954027&r.t=RESOURCES is supposed to have been archived by the National Archive at Kew, but it appears not to have been. The next step on recovering the source information is to contact the National Archive. Without this URL there is no way that this can be done.
- The WP:BLP states quite simply that contentious claims can be removed if unsourced. If you are seriously contending that Karen Arnold winning the award is cntentious then I would like to know that here and now.

Using AWB
[edit]Hi, I've downloaded AWB but I don't understand how to use it or take furher steps to set it up. Thanks, --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 16:49, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
- OK the basic steps are:
- decide on a task
- log in (probably not needed if you use IE)
- make a list of articles
- set the options
- run the task
Detailed example
[edit]- So suppose we decide to fix "perogative" -> "prerogative"
- Click on "file" -> "log in" and do the necessary
- Now make the list:
- In the Source area (bottom left) select Wiki search (text)
- Type "perogative" (without quotes) into the box, and click make list
- You should get a list of about 6 or 7 articles. (Only 3 have mis-spellings. The others have redirects from misspelling.)
- Now under "options" check find and replace and click the "normal" button: You should get a table.
- In the first row enter "perogative" and "prerogative" in the first two cells. All the check boxes except "enabled" and "case sensitive" should be blank.
- That is the "rule" for this run.
- For the sake of simplicity uncheck "auto tag" "apply general fixes" and "unicodify..."
- Now go to the start tab, enter an edit summary such as "spelling - prerogative"
- Press "Start"
- AWB will fetch the first article and apply your rule. Seeing that there is no change it will display "No Change".
- Either press "skip" or - go to the options tab and check "skip if no replacement made" and then press start again.
- After a few skips, you will come to an article where the rule does make a change, and the diff will be displayed.
- If you are happy, press "save" and move to the next article.
- Normally you would have the "General fixes", "Auto tag" and "Unicodify" on, of course these may make the diffs harder to read, but they are mostly a "Good Thing".
- Hope that helps.
- All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 18:45, 21 November 2015 (UTC).
- Thanks, but I don't know what you mean by log in, as I am logged in. I also don't know how to make a list of articles. Is something supposed to appear somewhere? Where are the options? Thanks, --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 19:02, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
- At Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/User manual#Login it says "choose File / Login (the sixth item from the top)". Where is it talking about? That and the example screenshots lokk diferent to what's on my computer. --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 19:11, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
- The number was wrong, unless they were counting from zero... but you see the "File" button near the top left? And when you click it you get a drop down? All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 19:18, 21 November 2015 (UTC).

- When you log in to Wikipedia your browser talks to the web server and they exchange a cookie (basically a random number) that confirms it's still you every time you request a new page or press save. If, like me, you use multiple browsers, you will need to log in on each of them. AWB is just another browser so you need to log in there too. (Except that it uses code libraries "and stuff" that IE uses, so you might find if you use IE you are already logged on in AWB.)
- How to make this sample list of articles is explained in my post. I have bolded the point where that explanation starts.

- Hi, how do you stub sort with AWB? Thanks, --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 23:51, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- I also replaced "transexual" with "transsexual" because I thought it was a misspelling, but Wiktionary defines it as a [[:wikt:Transexual|"rare alternative spelling"], so I won't be replacing this again. Is this a problem? Thanks, --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 23:53, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
- I doubt that anyone will complain about that. I would have "fixed" that spelling if I saw it, and I'm sure many people would have. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 00:58, 24 November 2015 (UTC).

- I don't think you can stub sort using AWB super-fast - unless perhaps the stubs are already categorised. Stub sorters usually have an intricate knowledge of the stub category tree (or so it seems).
- Certainly you can use the listmaker to select articles that transclude
{{Stub}}
, you can then use the "find" to quickly get to the stub template and add the actual qualifier manually. - (You could automatically replace
{{Stub}}
with{{-stub}}
to save a few keystrokes.) - All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 00:58, 24 November 2015 (UTC).

- Doesn't ring any bells with me, I'm afraid. Currently on women scientists (or was it Chaucer?) when I get a break from stalky XfD's and ACE questions.
- There is definitely a lack of coverage of (particularly fiction) authors. Not sure if there are systematic ways of getting refs, maybe with one of the paid services that will have archived book reviews - but even book reviews are scarce in some cases.

Proposed deletion of Brain Test
[edit]The article Brain Test has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Other than a bit of coverage about it being malware, I really can't see where this app is notable enough for an entry. There was a small flurry of coverage around the end of September, but not really much past that point in time. Most of the coverage past that point is like this and is in places that would be dubious as a source for Wikipedia's purposes, given that the site appears to offer media packages for coverage.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 15:04, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

[edit]See here It's not exactly egregious but I was shocked to see that I removed this after almost a decade. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 06:41, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
- Yes redirects are very low maintenance, and no-one would have seen that it the normal course of events. It's certainly true that we are deleting perfectly correct and probably notable information by the bucket-load while clean-up and maintenance falls mainly to a few dozen people. Unable to log in to use AWB
[edit]Hi, I am currently unable to log in using AWB because it is stated that the account "Rubbish computer" already exists. I am using the correct password and I have tried closing and reloading the tab. Please advise. Thanks, --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 13:05, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- If you look at the bottom right does it say "not logged in" or "Rubbish Computer"? All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 14:43, 28 November 2015 (UTC).
- It says "not logged in". --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 15:01, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- OK. AWB maintains profiles for your various accounts on various wikis. I suspect that for some reason it's trying to make anew profile where one already exists. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 15:04, 28 November 2015 (UTC).
- Okay: I somehow fixed it by not clicking "Save this account". Thanks, --Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 15:06, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- Good. When you click "Log in/Profiles " a little window should come up, headed profiles. If "Rubbish Computer" is item 1 (or 2...) , double click it. You may then be prompted for your password, depending on whether you elected too store it. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 15:08, 28 November 2015 (UTC).
