"Research help" proposal

Moxy: It's OK. ReXXs closed in favour of "my" proposal, which is to close the pilot, not in favour of the pilot proposal (which was never made at VP). All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 17:12, 3 April 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Hey Rich, wanted to follow up and make sure you know that I have no hard feelings on the research help stuff. We still disagree, of course, but that's something that happens all day all around Wikipedia. In the future, just please make sure your pings actually ping people. :-) Also, for your amusement, I made an accidental edit with my staff account last night (I was leaving a message on Commons and forgot to log back out). Given the edit's content, the irony is absolutely palpable. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 20:13, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Much appreciated - and I did have a little grin at that edit. I am absolutely sure that the ideas behind Research Help are important, which is why I have tried to encourage those working on it to express them a little more clearly - sadly to no avail so far.
All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 20:38, 3 April 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Keep in mind that both Wiki Librarians are good people and, like me, are long-term volunteers (long before they started with the WMF). I wouldn't be surprised if many of the ideas they work on came pre-employment! Although I don't have direct knowledge of situations like this (I'm in Comms, not CE), I think I'd be safe in saying that they're more than happy to listen to community comments—in fact, I would say that getting adequate participation is one of the hardest tasks they and everyone else at the WMF has... unless something goes wrong, of course. ;-) Keep working with them, get others to work with them, look for places where both camps could compromise, and I think in the end something great could result. Please leave edit summaries

[edit]

Hi. Could you please leave edit summaries, especially when your edit affects navigation like this? Although edit summaries are always useful, if you don't feel like getting into that habit, the next time you change a section heading, you could also change the /* Section heading */ markup in the summary, and/or add an {{anchor|old section title}} to the section. Cheers. fredgandt 13:06, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed up your ref. Billboard is not a book but a periodical, and is not the title of the article, which is "A Day in the Life of Terry Ellis"; credited author is Jim McCullaugh; it's on page 46; ISSNs go in the |issn= parameter. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:25, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi RF,

I trust you're fine. I need clarification on a particular source. User:Plx1 once stated on the evidence page that every single sources in the Igogo festival are fake and forgery. This is very untrue. The major mistakes I made was that I never knew that the exact page is what should be cited when citing google books. I fixed the problems with sources in that article, I also add new sources. I explained these mistakes of not citing the exact page on the evidence page under my section. One of the sources User:Plx1 described as forgery " Poynor, Robin (November 1987). "Ako Figures of Owo and Second Burials in Southern Nigeria". African Arts (UCLA James S. Coleman African Studies Center) 21 (1): 62–63+81–83+86–87. doi:10.2307/3336502." did supported the claim that Igogo festival is combined with new yam celebration and I used the source to support that single line. User:PIx1 returned to the evidence page to write ""a new reference has appeared, supposed to be about the celebration of new yams. This Poynor's paper is easy to find [1]. Page 86 is made of end notes. None of them is about yams or the Igogo festival. Nor any other part of this reference paper. Dear mentors, any comments ?"

I was surprised to see this comment because that source on page 86 reads:

"The number seventeen seems to be of ritual significance in Owo. Igogo, the most important annual festival in the kingdom, a combination of New Yam festival and purification ceremony merged with a memorial to the goddess Oronshen, also takes place over a seventeen-day period. The burial of the Olowo takes seventeen ritual days. These and other significant ceremonies all begin on the day of the five-day market."

I was confused and I left a message on their talk page here pointing them to what the source actually says. I asked if there is something I am missing so that they can point me to it because I don't understand why they felt the sources didn't supported the claim. User:Plx1 ignored me and returned to the evidence page to write

"these fake references have been trashed out by their author (and the article reduced from 11,250 bytes to 6,928 bytes). At [11], a new reference has appeared, supposed to be about the celebration of new yams. This Poynor's paper is easy to find [1]. Page 86 is made of end notes. None of them is about yams or the Igogo festival. One of them, note 3, is about the signification of a 17 days period. One line refers to yams. Nor any other part of this reference paper. Dear mentors, any comments ?

I was perplexed to see this again. I am learning but I'm not sure why they feel the source didn't supported the claim and the source is a forgery. I contacted User:Smartse for clarification perhaps I'm missing anything but Smartse said "the reference is saying (in very brief passing) that the festival is similar to the New yam festival but doesn't explicitly state that yams are celebrated during Igogo. Although English is not my primary language but I don't think the source is saying "Igogo festival is similar to the New yam festival". Is that what the source is saying? Wikigyt@lk to M£ 13:39, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Plx1 has acknowledged what you wrote, by modifying his evidence. The footnote says it is a combination or merging of three things. Because this seems to disagree with the contemporary reference which has the two festivals separated by a week, I would be very careful about what goes in the article. I would suggest that the Upeli is 12 days, and the New Yam festival is 5 days later, making 17 days in total. Similarly the eje seems to involve gunshots while for the igogo they are forbidden.
All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 01:56, 21 April 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Thank you so much, RF. I have already added another source that supported the claim, here. Do you think the source is good enough? I have also found more sources that supported the claim. Let me know what you think. Thank you. Wikigyt@lk to M£ 18:24, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Flynn Adam albums requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for four days or more and it is not presently under discussion at Categories for discussion, or at disambiguation categories.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". DYK for Pan Am Flight 841

[edit]

On 30 April 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Pan Am Flight 841, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that after the 1972 hijacking of Pan Am Flight 841, the pilot received honors at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport as well as death threats and vandalism at his home? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Pan Am Flight 841. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Pan Am Flight 841), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
