Question re Hong Kong and Wikipedia

Hello

My name is Omer Benjakob and I am a journalist covering Wikipedia

I wanted to know if you would maybe be willing to talk to me about Wikipedia and Hong Kong for a story I am working on

We can talk privately or via email or WeChat if you prefer - my email is omer.benjakob@haaretz.co.il

Best Omer Benjakob (talk) 12:54, 27 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hong Kong people seldom use WeChat due to security concern. For max privacy may be Telegram is better. Matthew hk (talk) 12:56, 27 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have unreviewed a page you curated

Hi, I'm Amire80. I wanted to let you know that I saw the page you reviewed, Protection of the Varieties of Chinese, and have marked it as unpatrolled. If you have any questions, please ask them on my talk page. Thank you.

Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

Probably it was auto-"reviewed" by TW when i tagging the article. Matthew hk (talk) 10:51, 7 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Errors on Unipol Banca page

Hi Matthew, you wrote to me about my edit work on Unipol Banca page. It's the first time I left a contribution so I'm sorry if I made a mistake. I work in Unipol Banca and I noticed that the Unipol Banca page contains errors so I tryed to correct them. You can find correct informations on www.unipolbanca.it so if I can't modify that page because I work in Unipol Banca, you can do it using the informations on the official website of the bank. For example Santella is not a key person on Unipol Banca, It's Stefano Rossetti, general manager. Please let me know if I can do something on my own.

Thank you, Regards

Cristina Pasin

You can submit changes in "X to Y" format in Talk:Unipol Banca, with citation / source of information . Matthew hk (talk) 19:14, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Translating HK demonstrations

Hello Matthew HK, I just read your response in the talk page about the numbers of demonstrators being unreliable in Tamar park. I would like to see the source in the economist about the numbers being unreliable, because I would like to include it in my Ducth translation of the counter demonstrations. If you have time, can you help me find it?
Thanks in advance,
--2019OutlaweD (talk) 10:01, 20 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It just one sentence from 22 June The Economist It was probably the largest [sic] political protest ever staged in Hong Kong.……The estimate may not be reliable.[1] for the ani-bill protest, for context it should mean 18 June protest/rally not 9 June one. I had to dig out Eng source for the police estimate for June protests, but RTHK, the government funded TV and radio station, had surprisingly more NPOV than South China Morning Post, which was purchased by Alibaba Group recently.
For police estimate , a pro-police/government demonstration held in Tamar Park, the organizer claimed 476,000 people, but the Park is way smaller than the football fields of the Victoria Park alone. Police say the figure for Tamar Park was 108,000 .[2] For 18 August the anti-bill demonstration, the organizer claimed 1.7 million, including people in Victoria Park and stuck in the area around Causeway Bay MTR station and Tin Hau MTR station. However, the police say the estimated figure was 128,000 .[3] It may be borderline original research to criticize the figure of the police was not reliable , but by common sense the aerial photo of the protests and anti-demonstration spoke for themselves.
Nevertheless the claims from the organizer , despite not that reliable and non-independent, it was widely quoted by reliable source .[4][5]
Lastly, Hong Kong used to have HKU POP to estimate some of the protests. However, Robert Chung the professor had retired from the uni and founded Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (https://www.pori.hk), but may be due to resource, they only estimated the figure of 1 July 2019 protest (see link, not sure why they built a bilingual website but not this page), which traditionally "1 July" march had many other demands and participation from other groups of community. Matthew hk (talk) 10:27, 20 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Matthew HK, I am not sure how to implement this into the translation, but I will think about how to use it.
--2019OutlaweD (talk) 10:34, 20 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I ended up placing it as a general notification about the numbers as estimated by pro-Beijing groups and police, citing the economist and using the examples of comparing the number of people in different locations relevant to the size of the locations and calculating the needed number of people per square meter to validate the numbers.
I placed the notification at the beginning of the lists of demonstrations (both pro-democray and pro-Beijing).
Thanks again for your help. --2019OutlaweD (talk) 11:42, 20 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A cup of coffee for you!

Hey, since it looks like I'm going to be well and truly stuck in this Hong Kong stuff now for a while I figured I'd pass a cup of coffee to somebody else with eyes on the articles who I know actually is committed to the principle of neutrality. This is going to be a long one, but I mean we got the 2009 Urumqi riots right in the end. Think we can manage here too. Simonm223 (talk) 16:47, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matthew hk,

I looked at the article earlier on Lok Ma Chau. I added some comments re concerns to the talk page and thought I'd ask one or two people if they may be able to help improve that page. You seem to have an unbelievable amount of experience on wikipedia. Is it possible you can help please? Any assistance is appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.102.148.34 (talk) 15:17, 9 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello Matthew hk,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

September 2019

Regarding this diff – I am not an admin. Citobun (talk) 01:41, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That's weird . I remember i checked using [1] some time ago. Either someone had overseer rights to hide the log or i remember wrong, For Shenzhen_Bay_Control_Point, then it is even more disruptive editing by not participating in talk page discussion (or use other tools to try to ask people to participate) and then boldly reverting consensus. Matthew hk (talk) 10:53, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. Sassuolo Calcio Femminile

Hi. This is the source.--Dipralb (talk) 13:21, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Then you should add it to the article first. Instead of bold move without stating citation. Matthew hk (talk) 10:54, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This nonsense with STSC

I don't think I've ever seen a worse example of trying to vote an opponent off the island than the issue at AN/I regarding STSC. I mean does STSC have a personal POV? I mean clearly they do. But we have editors with usernames like "Hkfreedomfighter" running around editing articles about the CPC and nobody even blinks at that POV. Nor should they as long as their editing remains consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for collaborative work. And this is what's irking me here. The difs provided in the STSC case are a grab bag of normal disputed content edits, one borderline edit, and then a bunch of actually good edits. For instance, removing WP:SYNTH is good. Responding to a question about a BLP by saying, "I've heard that but there's no RS so we should leave it out for now," is good. And I think that's what's got my gander up about this. Anyway, I mostly wanted to post a message off AN/I to another editor I respect in this space, as much as anything else to see if I'm missing something here. It really does seem galling. "2018-19 england korfball league" listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect 2018-19 england korfball league. Since you had some involvement with the 2018-19 england korfball league redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you wish to do so. Milswoj

Milswoj (talk · contribs) is blocked on the Polish Wikipedia and is apparently suspected to be related to a group of vandals known as "Chicago boys". JFYI. Nardog (talk) 16:13, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

And Swojmil (talk · contribs) seem edited quite a lot in pl wiki, and blocked for linkage to "Chicago boys" as well. Matthew hk (talk) 16:18, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Correct myself. Milswoj was also blocked but not in log explicitly say "Chicago boys" (pl:Wikipedia:Pacynka = sock instead). Matthew hk (talk) 16:20, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You recently reverted my edit on Tai Po (disambiguation). I think it sounds similar, in English at least, my Cantonese isn't good but I know it sounds like DAI PO in Cantonese. With that said, the way most English speakers pronounce it as far as I know IS "Tie-Pow" which sounds just like Typo. Please consider adding it back. Thank you.

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello Matthew hk,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 803 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football

The sections are about the same topic - the names involved with Steaua București. It makes no sense having two parallel discussions next to one another. Please leave the sections merged. GiantSnowman 13:42, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@GiantSnowman: Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines#Editing others' comments. One is WP:RM related, one is WP:Split, WP:Merge related, despite it is about the same twinned club, but nature is different. For RM, it should snowball close due to WP:Commonname and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (sports teams). The latter is a complex matter that not about RM. Matthew hk (talk) 13:49, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
And if the name of article(s) change, are you saying the disambiguation page won't be involved? Nonsense. GiantSnowman 13:51, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Using analogy, it is the matter of deciding which John Smith. Even if one John Smith had renamed himself, thing related to that John Smith should still attribute to him, not sudden to other John Smith. Matthew hk (talk) 13:54, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
And it is more complex that we have Atari, Atari, Inc. or Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP Inc. or Republic of China and Republic of China (1912–1949). Matthew hk (talk) 13:56, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
