Thanks Gerda. Well, perhaps.

but I like it ;) - I had an idea yesterday, to create an article, and found that it existed, and was created - yesterday! Stonecrop Gardens, pics by me. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:30, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ha, quite a coincidence! Some lovely pictures. I think the pink ones may be Phlox paniculata and the small yellow/orange ones Tagetes, maybe Tagetes patula? Martinevans123 (talk) 10:46, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much. I asked Menerke bloem who has flower in his user name. There are a few more on the commons, feel free to look there, too. Also at my calendar pics. I know many flowers by German name, but neither Latin nor English, - all help appreciated. I also need help for the translation of today's topic Spiel nicht mit den Schmuddelkindern. [3] --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:10, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see he already has an article. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:27, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
yes, and his sister-in-law is on the Main page, so now to the song and album, and a translation of just the title, or rather "Schmuddelkinder", - the rest is fairly common stuff. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:42, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
GoogleTranslate produces flithy? But the autotranslate on de:Spiel nicht mit den Schmuddelkindern gives dirty, while The Times obit for Degenhardt here gives just grubby. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:15, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, took grubby. Do you have access to the whole article? Could you check if it has some more useful for the article? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:40, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Alas, not. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:50, 11 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ooh, nice mix there! But if I had to choose one live performance, that's pretty much inch perfect all round.... I guess I'd have to choose this one from Montreux 1969. Benny Bailey's two trumpet breaks are just off the scale. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:48, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Truth be told, YT is not a big fan of the horn, though with some exceptions (from Handel to, say, Jan Garbarek). And there's something about the word Trumpet that just bothers me.
Do you know about a word game called Lexulous? Don't bother with Wiki's lousy article about it. I'll send an email. – Sca (talk) 18:40, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Er, ahem, excuse me. Speaking from a totally dispassionate and professional position of No-COI-What-Me-Guv-Nah I wish to say that there is nothing bothersome about the word Trumpet as such. Indeed 99% of all rational, reasonable people would agree that it is among the most beautiful words in the language. When you start knocking letters off the far end, sure, there is a problem starting to develop. But trumpet? Nah, lovely DBaK (talk) 23:51, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
DBaK, I can't help feeling that you're blowing your own trumpet here. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:10, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How do we feel about the word Trumpery, then? – Sca (talk) 00:19, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Our level of negativity about the similarity between Certain Words and Certain Other Words is off the scale. It's as if the world has carefully dreamt up a PR disaster for the trumpet-playing community, from which it could take decades to recover ... sigh ... DBaK (talk) 17:20, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Beginning today, the new buzzword is detrumpification (possibly coined by Anthony Scaramucci). – Sca (talk) 14:53, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes. As in "Scaramucci, Scaramucci, will you do the Fandango"?? Martinevans123 (talk) 15:08, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Although speaking as a detached and wholly unbiased professional, I was most gratified to see trumpets featuring quite heavily in the detrumpification, including a moment by a mate, to whom, now he's even famouser, I shall shortly start sending begging letters, requests for endorsements etc etc ... Ever thought about running for admin? I have looked at your block log and the one about sockpuppetry is a little concerning, but I'm willing to hear your explanation before rejecting you as a candidate. My Boy Lollipop

[edit]
My boy lollipop

Popular music from reunified Germany??

Dear Mr. Evans, you have deleted my mention about the group “Musicbox” cover version of “My Boy Lollipop”. Because I never published anything before on Wikipedia I am not fully aware of their rules and regulations. Maybe you are so kind to help me edit my contribution that it becomes “eligible” for you to be published. The background: During my late thirties ( I am now 71) and always interested in music, I co-produced the German group Musicbox. Their album: ‘The First Project’ was recorded at Music Park Studios in Bad Homburg, Germany with the help of notable musicians Harry Baierl (Boney M, Milli Vanilli) Michael Wyn (Nosferatu) and mixed by Frank Fahrian's Sound Engineer R. Tammy Grohe. After listening to our demos in London, Virgin A&R Manager Muff Winwood (Spencer Davies Group) told me that he would like, but could not publish the song because they had just purchased the original rights. He recommended Canadian record company DINO Music which during Midem 1997 accepted to produce and publish an LP, a single and one of the first Cd’s ever for the German-speaking market. They also produced two Music videos and organized several radio and television appearances of Musicbox. Their version of the song was particularly successful because of the “Mickey Mouse” voice of singer Kali(mero). The LP sold about 20.000 units, CD sales have been marginal. The German Music publication “Der Musikmarkt” featured Musicbox with a story. Thank you for your attention and consideration. Respectfully Thomas Martin — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.61.224.100 (talk) 16:39, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thomas. Thanks very much for your note and all that background information. The answer is quite simple, to be generally notable at Wikipedia we'd expect to have an article called "Musicbox (German band)", or something similar. I looked but could not find one, even at German Wikipedia. Would you care to write one (for English Wikipedia)? But even if you did, I have to warn you that their version of "My Boy Lollipop” might not be deemed "notable enough" to be mentioned at the song article, unless it has been mentioned in numerous reliable sources, e.g. magazine reviews or books on German pop music, etc. Does that make the situation clearer for you? Regards. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:48, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Martin,I apreciate your fast answer and advice. I will think about writing an article about the group but for me, the songs had much more importance than the group. I grew up in the sixties and I think we produced very decent covers- in comparison to a lot of others. Would you like to receive a voice file? It's very difficult to get material from 1987, the internet was not developed. Anyhow, nice talking to you. I learned something today! Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.61.224.100 (talk) 17:38, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You are very welcome. It's a bit of an odd situation to have a song that's more notable that the group, although I suppose this does happen for unknown bands that record the first version of a song, or for those that are "one-hit wonders". In this case, of course, the original by Millie is certainly the best known one in the UK. Please feel free to send me a voice file if you wish. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:47, 11 February 2021 (UTC) p.s. the best place any new article or first mention might be over at de.wiki? They do at least have de:My Boy Lollipop already.[reply]

Hello, hello

[edit]
Hi Martin,
I have popped back into clarify the Keats/Harrow question. I wondered if you might be able to archive the Keats talk page from start to around 2010. Most of the earlier chat isn't very relevant to the current article, and the page has never had sections archived before. I've been away too long to remember how to do it. If it's a faff, no worries. It's hardly vital.
About the Plath stamp question, opening up a 'popular influence' section etc seems to me to be an open invitation for it to be filled with all sorts of tosh. Not sure the stamp is that significant. I would tend to go for lean articles, but happy to defer to your judgement. I hope you are doing well and enjoying the WP life. Stay safe and well. Anna (talk) 03:53, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Anna,
I hope you are well. Thanks for popping back. Have done a manual archive. Do you think that's enough? Re postage stamps:
"I love people. Everybody. I love them, I think, as a stamp collector loves his collection." — Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath Haha. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:45, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect. Thanks. I've tried to add a bit of clarity to the Keats legacy conversion question. Do you know the source for the historical currency gizmo? I don't think that was around when I was a lass. There is large discrepancy (£100 000) between the gimzo figure for the legacy and the National Archive estimate.
I have to say that when I pop back, I am amazed how close these original articles are to 12 years ago. I always assume they will have got trashed (esp the referencing), not no, not much. With big names, like Keats, they are generally improved. The WP system seems to me nuts, these days - incredibly time-intensive, so it's heartening to see a lot of personal work improved and remaining as it was referenced in the Keats article (2009-2012 ish, me surrounded by stacks of biographies from the library). Something is working somewhere. I suspect it is you. Lol.
Since I stopped editing at WP my eye problems are much better. It's a shame to have moved on, as I loved the writing of new articles in particular but the coding is just a killer - trying to spot a missing bracket. I now run a large neighbourhood network, and the experience of watching the WP community battle itself has been invaluable; if only for the toughening of skin. When you have been attacked for years on WP as a Romanian fascist, a Russian spy, a Grammar Nazi, a Mosad agent, British govt minister, homophobic ring leader etc etc, not much can touch you. It has stood me in good stead to understand the ways of the fearful (online) heart. It's also helped me greatly improve my writing skills and source analysis. Though I still can't spell.
Of the hundreds of poetry articles I overhauled, wrote or rewrote, I think John is closest to my heart. So, thank you for your care of him. He lived a few doors up from the house where I grew up (so to speak), so I think of him as eccentric neighbour in need of TLC and good cake. x Anna (talk) 07:13, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Anna. Thanks for your note and your valuable copy edits over at John Keats. I have no idea of the source for the historical currency gizmo! There's more info at Template:Inflation. That's quite a collection of accusations you have there! I'm now wondering where that Keats residence was, haha. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:14, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Do not open if offended by Jewish humour or brain samples
Remember, you were warned.
Isaac is an honest Jewish man, but he recently found out his son converted to Christianity. This is no good, for Isaac is a devout observant Jew. This shouldn’t happen to a proud Jew like he.
So Isaac visits his friend Albert and says "Albert, Albert, my son has become a Christian, what am I going to do?"
"Funny you should say that’ says Albert, "My son has also become a Christian, this should not happen to a proud, devout Jew like me. So they talk with each other and say "we'll talk to the Rabbi, he'll know what to do."
So the two Jews visit the Rabbi and say "Rabbi, Rabbi, our sons have become Christian, what are we going to do?"
"Funny you should say that," says the Rabbi, "My son has also become a Christian, this should not happen to a proud, devout Jew of my status." So the three men talk with each other and say "we'll ask God, he'll know what to do!"
So the Rabbi calls out "God, God, our sons have become Christian, what are we going to do?"
Suddenly a bright celestial light shines through the clouds and the thunderous voice of God rings out:
"Funny you should say that..."

Spam of antidepressants articles

[edit]

In regard to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fluoxetine&curid=10153680&diff=1010264578&oldid=1010264498. The same IP also spammed Sertraline, Venlafaxine, Serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, and Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor with exactly the same text. I reverted some of it but really do not want to engage into an edit war. Can there be some kind of admin remedy? — Preceding unsigned comment added by The Sceptical Chymist (talkcontribs) 16:42, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. The sources look good: [1][2][3][4] Irving Kirsch has an article. So, it's well-thought-out and not vandalism. But it does look like spamming and editing against consensus. Best to discuss at one of the article Talk pages, to which the IP can be invited, but not sure which one. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:43, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Malaysian Airlines 370 Article

[edit]

I have seen you twice reverted by changes to the article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_370_disappearance_theories, could you please explain whats wrong with it. While I am new to Wikipedia, so if I am talking to you at wrong place please let me know that too. I tried to add value to the MH370 article. Today Mh370 completed 7 years of disappearance, and I found this great article so considered it good to mention this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adityamilyin (talkcontribs) 14:52, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Adityamilyin. Thanks for your note. The best place to discuss your addition is over at Talk:Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappearance theories. I had to repair the article as you had tried to added an unnecessary subsection heading at the top. But I also have doubts about the source you used and the claims it makes. Other editors may wish to discuss it. Regards. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:20, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, well everything is misinformation considering the fact that the MH370 investigation never gave a conclusion, on to the point of me not mentioning sources, well I am new to Wikipedia, please advice how to properly do that, first of all I clearly mentioned that Ministry of Malaysia was still investigating the prospect of a possible atempt to make a call, and it is true that Co-Pilot's cell phone briefly connected to a tower. Secondly you mentioned the subsection, okay may be I should have added it as a part of some other section itself rather than creating a new section, it is clearly in the ATC records that Ho Chi Minh called after 18 minutes, while the internation rule is to do it within 5 minutes. And internation rules also say that a fighter jet should be close to the aircraft within 20 minutes, in case of a potential threat and loss communications. This is standard rule, it has happened with Helios Flight 522 too. The standard rule was not followed, and that too is in government records. The url I mentioned was just because I found the explanation of that URL really good and precise, else I have mentioned that the 18 minute delay was from ATC, and it is genreally known that no fighter jet was known, and the Wikipedia article had already mentioned that the inital searches werre in South China sea, but that information further just explained that if INMARSAT was used early possible debris could be found. Weather reports of same time also show that 2 cyclones happened in its approx crash location. Also, we do not have direct link for the government records, it is public but not directly available on internet, and weather report if you want I can add, by finding it from internet, nothing has been cooked up by me, and I mentioned that site, because the text I added in wikipedia was a direct copy paste from that site, https://mily in.com/mh370-update-2021-what-happened-to-mh370-mystery/#11 the heading that says "Was the MH370 Shot down? Or was there any country that wanted to revenge?" has the exact text used in the wikipedia edit of mine, while it isnt a source, it definitely is a great explanation, also there is no need for worrying about plaigarism, I have the permission from the owner of that site to use the text here. Please suggest what I can do to get my edit back. Looking forward to your reply. Will Weather report, and removing subheading be enough? Adityamilyin (talk) 18:04, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, not "lol". You know these are not acceptable sources. This does not confirm "Some tedders have the rotating tines enclosed inside a solid structure to increase the force applied to the hay" or that the two you mentioned are similar to...similar to what? The YouTube videos don't confirm the text (and there are no words, and it's YouTube videos, etc), and so even if they were somehow reliable they don't source the text. Come on--this is silly. Drmies (talk) 19:01, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think the videos not only provide ample evidence that these machines exist, but also do a very good job of showing how they work. I'm also pretty sure that acceptable textual sources will be available somewhere. I expect, just like me, you're already busy looking for them. Until they can be located, I guess small adjustments to the text and/or adding back in cn tags would be perfectly acceptable. I'd have to agree with you that that source is not a very useful one, so I've removed it. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:16, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Martin, that they exist doesn't mean anything, you know that. No I'm not looking for stuff. I already wrote the article, and dedicated it to User:tedder, and I think I did a pretty good job. I see on the talk page that you showed an interest in this in 2010 already--surely ten years of research should suffice for finding acceptable sources. Drmies (talk) 22:07, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dr. Mies, Very sorry I've scored such low marks after a full ten ten years. I must have got distracted. So, you "already wrote the article"? My hearty congratulations. About the F-16 WIKI page

[edit]

The current wiki page about F-16's climb rate is completely wrong: It says the F-16C block50 has only 254m/s climb rate at sea level, and the source is its flight manual. However, I am not seeing any "254m/s" from its flight manual. However the manual proves that it sustains a 1200ft/sec (370m/s) climb rate even in a 4.2G ascending turn, which means it can sustain even higher rate in straight line climb! https://i.postimg.cc/hthftrg7/Figure-B8-37-F-16-C-block50-supplement-manual.png Please let me correct this, otherwise it's misleading and will cause under-estimation of F-16's performance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oldtimesake (talkcontribs) 00:40, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sad news

[edit]

Very sorry to hear of the loss of Yoninah, who always seemed to me to be the essence of good sense and friendly collaboration. I'm posting this tune, from Luca Sestak, in her memory: [9] Martinevans123 (talk) 22:07, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, great music. I posted Psalm 84, pictured on my talk. How lovely is your dwelling place. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:47, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the guy's a genius. He's 26! He was playing perfect boogie-woogie to millions at the age of 11. He now shows that he also has amazing musical imagination. A lot like that other jazz piano genius. Yoninah was a great editor. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:54, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
She was. We wrote the psalm article together, made hundreds of DYKs together (often not agreeing), - my name is 40 times on her present (truncated) talk, DYK? Look for "touching the world of angels". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:01, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
"Touching the World of Angels is not a book about death, but about life – the precious, oh-so-elusive vision we all seek, consciously or subconsciously, to make sense of our existence." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:04, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Profound words. And let's not forget the rest of us fallen angels (I assume this must be from the 2007 "Remastered & Expanded", Max Bennett on wonderful bass) ... footnotes. Martinevans123 (talk) 23:17, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
After nobody did, I wrote for the Signpost. - Today: Bach's cantata composed for today, - perhaps listen. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:52, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
... and the first performance was on a Palm Sunday which is today, and Yoninah's obituary with the beginning of Passover today - putting some little ego-battles in perspective --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:11, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

James Watt

[edit]

@Martinevans123, I'd like to expand upon James Watt's work on factious airs. There are several important contributions in the carbon monoxide space that should be mentioned on Watt's page. The page is protected, but it appears you have previous administered revisions. What is the best way to go about this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SloppyTots (talkcontribs) 02:07, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SloppyTots, yes James Watt is semi-protected. You can use Template:Edit semi-protected at Talk:James Watt. But you might want to look at WP:AUTOCONFIRM - you need to have an account that is at least 4 days old and has made at least 10 edits to the encyclopedia. Meanwhile I have now seen your edits under Talk:James Watt#Factitious Airs, so I will have a look if I can help. Regards. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:26, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reference

[edit]

Hi, do you have a reference for the pronunciation you added here? Thanks. ElAhrairah inspect damageberate 18:16, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Elahrairah. I can try and find one. Or you may be able to? I was basing my addition on the numerous radio, television and YouTube pieces on Rees-Zammit that I have heard over the past 12 months. The BBC commentary on the Grand Slam decider yesterday, would be a case in point. Do you know of anything different? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:36, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Here's an example. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:49, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Champion leeks
Hogg tartan

The permutations are fairly straightforward, but for clarity:

If France win by less than 20 points, Wales are Champions, and England 5th.
If France win by over 20 points and score at least 4 tries, France are Champions and England 5th.
If Scotland win, Wales are Champions and England 5th.
If it’s a draw, Wales are Champions and England 5th.
If France win by 20 and score 5 tries, the championship is shared and England are 5th.

Woooo, 23–27. What a final match. Excellent refereeing from Wayne Barnes. A great effort from both sides. Another win in the final gruelling moments. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:11, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The view now on Architecture articles is that galleries are very acceptable. I was slightly disappointed by the range, there don’t appear to be any Good Pictures in the set, and the few of the interiors are poor. I believe the NT doesn’t allow interior photography. But there are some very nice ones. Add with gusto!

The Bourgeois Blues

[edit]

Heya. The Bourgeois Blues is a magnet for people to add trivia related to "X artist covered the song". It seems that the Ry Cooder version was added to the lead by a drive-by IP. I have been trying for the past few years to trim the trivia but I missed this one. --In actu (Guerillero) Parlez Moi 15:36, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I see. Perhaps a better (secondary) source could be found that would establish notability of the Cooder version. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:43, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Telegraph / The Daily Telegraph

[edit]

Hi there, just a quick note according the wiki article and the online version its self the publication seems to simply be called The Telegraph when in reference to its online version. The Daily Telegraph seems to be its in-print name. The "London" bit is just to disambiguate it from the other publications called The Telegraph (not too fussed just wanted to note/explain). Thanks for helping update/maintain the article regardless.  Spy-cicle💥  Talk? 22:13, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I get confused over website=/ work=/ publisher=, and the format appropriate for each. I had never seen "The Telegraph" used before. I assume all of the news sources at that article are to web articles, so I guess we need to be consistent across all. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:19, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
p.s. that DAB page suggest it should be Telegraph.co.uk (although why the upper case "T", I don't know). Martinevans123 (talk) 22:44, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Per Template:Cite web Website and work I believe are identical and are aliases of each other. Publisher is company, organization or other legal entity that publishes the work being cited very often the owner. For example website=IGN|publisher=Ziff Davis Though often redundant when they have similiar names like: website=The New York Times|publisher=The New York Times Company. So is it okay if I change it back to The Telegraph for the website parameter as that is the name of the online website/work.  Spy-cicle💥  Talk? 15:20, 9 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for that. I guess in the internet age newspapers want to shed the "daily" straight-jacket. This is why the Daily Mail transforms into the "Mail Online". But the same old rubbish (only worse). Martinevans123 (talk) 15:21, 9 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Great, no problem. Yeah that makes sense, I sadly do not get the reference though :/.  Spy-cicle💥  Talk? 18:11, 9 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

After seeing that there are a total of 11,179 media images listed at Commons Cat:Racing silks, I decided I didn't know how to search them efficiently or create any new ones if required. I guess our best bet would be to locate the editor(s) who created/ added the same at 2019 Grand National. We don't look for the canon but a Psalm setting in Welsh, and I can't do that. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:18, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, here are the words. But as for a Mozartian musical setting, I have no idea. Meanwhile, here's a nice English one (1973, Guildford Cathedral Choir, directed by Barry Rose). Martinevans123 (talk) 20:24, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I now opened the other book (IMSLP). The piece in question is on p. 140, which is p. 144 of the pdf, and it's music in B-flat major labeled Mozart, but I don't know the piece. A great Psalm. And talking of profound passages, I guess PTG and David Conner have cornered the market in "Consider the rainbow, and bless the One who made it" for a while. But of course, it's not Ecclesiastes (which only goes up to Chapter 12, not 43). It's Ecclesiasticus, which doesn't even appear in my RSV! Yacht rock as a genre

[edit]

Mr. Evans, I'm puzzled by your behavior. Is it possible for you to explain it? What do you hope to accomplish by using one of Wikipedia's more fascistic tactics, hiding the interaction between two people because you dislike it? You have this pretty picture of an angel on your Talk page and some sweet nothings about peace. Are you hoping the lion and lamb will lie down together in this world? I see little evidence of that, Father Evans, in this world, in this life, the one we interact with using our five senses.. If you had taken the time and effort to analyze the situation, rather than lazily dismissing it as "bickering" and a pox on both your houses, you would know whom to point your judgemental finger at. Dan is a net minus, not a net plus, to Wikipedia, and he has been that far way for a very long time. In your attempt to place some kind of arbitrary blame on both of us, you have ignored Dan's form of communication, which includes:

 • "Forgiveness and compassion don't seem to be too American either"
 • "Dude, go out and get laid"
 • "Or find a real job where you can actually make a difference. It's not the end of the world, or your world (i.e. America)"
 • "I don't care. No one cares. No one cares about what you think because you're belittling anyone who disagrees with your point of view"
 • "All your doing with comments like that one are creeping me out and embarrassing yourself"
 • "Those are false equivalencies, and a puritanical outlook"
 • "It's not a personal attack. And your response is still puritanical. Your point is irrelevant"
 • "It is more of an observation than an insult or a compliment, unlike your reasoning, which insults my intelligence"
 • "Another observation: being patronizing, or projecting your insecurities about content discussion onto me, will not expedite your desired change. Your comments are way too long, complicated
 • You're the only one giving speeches and personal essays"
 • "It's too late to make nice; he has completely turned me off with his incessant, myopic bloviating, anal rigidity and condescending, hypocritical remarks from the get-go, all of which I suspect are products of his obsession with removing a superficial project banner (that seems incredibly precious to him) and have blinded him from comprehending the basics of guidelines and policy-based arguments; one simply should not argue in the manner he has; it is unreadable and off-putting. I'm glad I'm not alone anymore to be driven crazy by his behavior, but I have no more patience for him on this matter."

If you really wanted to help, you would take the initiative and get this creature removed from Wikipedia.
Vmavanti (talk) 11:10, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mr Vanti. I make no pretence at divinity. I thought, and continue to think, that the "exchange" at Talk:Aja (album) has no place at a Wikipedia article Talk page. Very sorry if you feel hurt in some way. I honestly think your "discussion" there and/or your grievances against another editor, need to be taken to a different venue. Rest assured I won't be editing that thread again. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 11:17, 26 April 2021 (UTC) p.s. but thanks for pointing out I'm lazy.[reply]
I like to fancy myself a god of sorts, and solemnly declare, anything that rocketh upon the land shall indeed rock on a yacht. But so too shall ye lose the verily low end to the heavens, rocking open-air on any deck, so lo, no! Now is not the time to play outside. Now excuse me. I must judge this creature you speak of, accordingly, per mine own great whims and mysteriously lazy pace. InedibleHulk (talk) 12:36, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Why are you butting in? You think you're funny, but you're not.
Vmavanti (talk) 12:51, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for those kind words of comfort, Your Great Infallibleness. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:39, 26 April 2021 (UTC) p.s. you think you're funny, yes and you always stay the distance.[reply]
"Very sorry if you feel hurt" is dismissive rather than analytical. It isn't about my feelings or anyone else's. I don't care if you contribute to the thread. It isn't the discussion that is a problem. It's Dan's behavior. You could make a difference—if you wanted to. I have seen no comments, other than my inchoate analysis, about why it's acceptable to use this offensive, false term "yacht rock" all across Wikipedia. The point of Wikipedia is to provide facts, not to put down the subjects of articles. People who use this term think they are being cute, but it's dumb. The same kind of thing in other contexts stirs paroxysms of fake moral outrage and selective indignation. Nope, not here. If it's the old red herring about protocol and location ("How dare you to talk to me on my Talk page!"), then where should this subject be addressed?

Out of interest, is that Wings album London Town yacht rock? It was partly recorded on a yacht, by a rock band, and waterways appear in the cover art. Problem is, the album's often described as soft rock ... so: "Soft yacht rock"? – perhaps the genre's developed and widened in scope? JG66, I'll try to be clear. First, I'm not "them", just one man/child/deity. Second, I can't define yacht rock precisely, but it's somewhere between wuss rock (as heard in department stores) and butt rock (formerly headlining cruise ships). Third, I didn't so much set sail as fall asleep; if you've heard "Sail Away" from Fraggle Rock, though, you know moon shoes, deck shoes and fuzzy bunny slippers fit about the same. InedibleHulk (talk) 03:24, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

And before anyone files a hate speech complaint, I love quite a bit of butt rock and wuss rock! It's the fusion hits I deem "weak-ass noise". Some streams were never meant to cross over. InedibleHulk (talk) 07:29, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't tried my Tube yet, could have a copy or two. If your link was from the legit owners, it could be a licensing deal. They like to regionalize us on Earth, for some reason. InedibleHulk (talk) 10:10, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's just uploaded under "Reparata and the Delrons - Topic", but clearly states "Provided to YouTube by Sony Music CG". I'm currently having a discussion about this with Ojorojo at Talk:Wang Dang Doodle, if you are interested. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:40, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense; Sony Music is big over here, but there's simply no such thing as Sony Music CG. Google indicates it's very Euro, if anything. InedibleHulk (talk) 11:53, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's interesting. Regardless of copyright, adding YT links that just don't work in some countries will be a bit of a waste of time and just a source of frustration. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:06, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly, yes, for some niche songs. Go global or go home! You could add them with a fair warning for some readers, though, parenthetical or whatnot (your Wang Dang Doodle is showing from here). InedibleHulk (talk) 12:13, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Martin, I hope that you're well - it's been a while since I've been in touch. Hi Jez, great to hear from you. Also hope all's well with you. I would have thought that, in 1932, men were allowed to express their true gender identity... by becoming construction workers on the 30 Rockefeller Plaza skyscraper. But who knows. I also think it's unlikely there'll ever be "sources that prove how they gender identified". Even if there were, I'm not sure how that might be relevant to their job as ironworkers. We could probably assume Gusti Popovič was a real post-card writing married man (he was after all, a lumberjack). But who knows about Joseph Eckner, Joe Curtis, Natxo Moneta, or cigar-smoking Matty O'Shaughnessy... or the six others who's names we don't seem to even know. I'm not sure you'd be able to find another in my 177,265 edits. My opinion of Hancock has dropped far lower than I even thought possible. Yes, I think he's a hypocrite. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:36, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I rarely find myself agreeing with Boris-Not-Good-Enuf, but "totally fucking hopeless" doesn't seem quite so outrageous, IMHO.
Martin, you were reported an WP:AN. Whatever we feel about certain people (don't get me started on the Milk Snatcher)), if they are living or recently deceased then BLP applies and we need to keep our emotions in check. As you are an experienced editor generally in good standing, I considered the above reminder would be sufficient without then need to take it any further. FWIW, I think that Hancock should resign, and I hope he will be gone by the end of June. Mjroots (talk) 15:13, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
"Mj", I applaud your diligence in an administrative capacity. Looking forward to my notice of the AN posting ("lol"). I do hope you won't think I'm procrastinating, but unlike all other edits, of course, edit summaries can't be adjusted later, only rev-del'ed, and then only by an Admin? Ah right, "generally in good standing"; it may be time I sat down. You think you need to "take it any further"? I suspect none of this band of incompetent half-wits will be gone for years yet (Government MP's I mean, not Wikipedia Admins). Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a prior engagement in Amsterdam. Kind regards. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:49, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

FTR, I didn't notice because I didn't think action against the editor was necessary (if I did I would've tried ANI); people make occasional off-hand comments. I just felt that the summary needed to be revdelled. Usually I'd request offwiki but IRC is usually a ghost-town at that time. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 18:46, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah cheers, Crasty. It seems my slagging off has brought all the boys to the yard. I love wrestling as much as the next man and I might well have done just the same as you in your shoes. Thanks to Speedy Rootzales over there, my opinion of Hancock "didn't reflect particularly well" on Wikipedia only for 2 hours and 11 minutes. A quick null edit would have knocked it off the top of page history immediately, of course. As that Andrew Neil of GB News said, "In the future, everyone will be a hopeless Tory politician for 30 minutes." Filtering usernames

[edit]

I've asked about this before when I've tried to avoid seeing the anti-Daily Mail crusaders who just leave a trail of shite behind them. There are some tweaks you can do to your monobook (fnar fnar) but nothing inherent in the Wikipedia interface. With the "tagging" user doing around 20 pages per minute, and with 10,000 pages on my watchlist, I've fallen foul of being overwhelmed by their edits.... Good luck finding that filter, if you work it out, let me know. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 18:03, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you know what they say in Bradford... "where there's shite, there's a long line of angry editors with shovels". Or something like that. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:31, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I do. That meatbot behaviour will have to stop. And to think some people thought that user should be an admin? The very thought of it....! The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 18:33, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Princess of Wales

Lardy?Sca (talk) 12:34, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know. Rather draws unfortunate comparison with the "Princess of Pork" (who shall remain nameless, of course), doesn't it. I think it's to do with the Germans indulging in too many umlauts? Martinevans123 (talk) 12:43, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Grandma used to make umlauts with cheese and sauerkraut, seasoned with caraway and dill, that just couldn't be beat – unless you had a shtick, that is. – Sca (talk) 18:53, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I hear that Princess Michael of Kent "does a mean Wiener schnitzel" and has "an industrial appetite" (located in the Ruhr, perhaps?) But she eats no puddings; so no Black Forest Birthday Gateaux for her. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:38, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know much about British deserts, but I suspect some of them eat spotted dick. Or is that something they caught from messing around? --Tryptofish (talk) 20:25, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Errrmm, you're probably thinking of something that happens after dinner at many of Britain's finest public schools.
Also, continuing from some of above, one can see what spotted dick looks like at our page on Chancroid. (I deliberately did not blue-link that, because it is not a link for polite society, nor for the faint of heart.) --Tryptofish (talk) 20:33, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone got any ideas as to why Archive 15 for 2021 won't appear in the Archive box?? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:21, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's because the archive page 15 does not yet exist. When I search for it, it shows as a red link. I guess you can either: (1) create the page manually (leaving it blank and waiting for the bot to fill it in, (2) just wait for the bot to create the page, or (3) do whatever makes the bot run now. --Tryptofish (talk) 22:07, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Girlfriend Is Better" song length

[edit]

The LP/early CD version on Speaking in Tongues shows 4:22. Is 4:22 not the length to use since Speaking in Tongues came out before Stop Making Sense? 73.167.238.120 (talk) 22:48, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I thought that too. But then I read: "The song's single version was a live version from the soundtrack of their 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, named for a lyric from the song." Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 07:02, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
p.s. curiously, watching the clip from the film uploaded to YouTube by "Lucaas", I see it lasts 5:11. Martinevans123 (talk) 07:38, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

Greetings. The passage you restored on this article blatantly violates WP:PEACOCK. It isn't necessary to claim he is widely regarded as anything, or that he is often described as anything. The first paragraph of the article already establishes that he is one of the better players by way of presenting pure fact. This is how articles are supposed to be written. Adding the peacock passage does nothing to improve the article, and detracts from the real facts of the player. It isn't necessary, it's redundant, and potentially misleading. I am removing it again. Please do not restore it without providing a reliable source that supports he is "widely" or "often described" as anything. Further, the way in which you attempted to add sources to the passage, by way of "[157]" for example, is not the way we add sources to an article. In particular, if you want to use a source that is already used in the article, you should read through Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Repeated_citations on how to do this. If you have questions about this, let me know. But, again, please don't add this WP:PEACOCK passage again. Thanks, --Hammersoft (talk) 15:02, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Hammersoft. I didn't "restore" anything you had removed. I added two different statements that are already in the body of the article? I actually agreed with your removal (as I explained at the Talk page). I added fully sourced material. The "facts" of De Bruyne's career are why he is "widely regarded as one of the best players in the world and he has often been described as a "complete" footballer." But the making of those statement are also facts in themselves. As far as I can see, all of those existing sources, which are given in the text, are WP:RS. I have no intention of edit warring, so there's really no need for you to request I don't restore. I am well aware of how to add sources properly, thanks: the "[157][158][159][160][161]" was a cut-and-paste error that I evidently did not have time to fix (and I thought that might have been obvious). This is a content discussion that is best discussed at Talk:Kevin De Bruyne. That's why I specifically opened a new thread and requested, in my edit summary, that we do that? Thanks so much. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:19, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I just don't see the point in adding it. The article is already gushing about his accomplishments (and well deserved). We don't need to add the peacock terms. Its redundant and meaningless in the context of so many other superlatives. --Hammersoft (talk) 17:18, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Then we'll have to agree to disagree. You have your opinion. I have mine. If someone is considered to "the best" at something, I think he deserves to be described just like that. Compare with Ronnie O'Sullivan, for example, which open with ".. is an English professional snooker player who is widely recognised as one of the most accomplished and talented players in the history of the sport." That's in the very first sentence! I think it's a matter of choice, not not a matter of "we don't write articles like this" policy. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:31, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Then we disagree. There's a reason we have WP:PEACOCK to guide us. --Hammersoft (talk) 00:55, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's "guidance", isn't it. As far as I can see, my addition was simply "imparting or plainly summarizing verifiable information." If it's a question of prominence, it could neatly be added at the end of the lead section. If it really is "peacockery", you'll also need to remove to from the main body of the article, together with those eight sources that support it. Martinevans123 (talk) 07:00, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Now copied over to Talk:Kevin De Bruyne. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:18, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

B-bot-a-Lula, you're my baby. Thanks for that. It's not really an image, but never mind. It looks like that sneaky old Binky removed it from Rocky Mountain Way (song) here three days ago with the rationale "(removing non-free audio listening example per WP:NFCCP... no "contextual significance" has been supplied)". And I thought the file had all the necessary justification. It does seem to me to be "contextually significant" to an article about that song. Perhaps we ought to just add this 8 minute live version from Joe's VEVO? Martinevans123 (talk) 17:50, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have been removing a bunch of non-free audio files from articles, ones that don't have any description of the audio heard in the file. Such a description is needed per WP:NFCCP number 8. To make this file comply with the requirement, a description can be attached alerting the reader to any part of the listening experience, for instance lyrics, instrumentation, production techniques, etc. Specifically on this file, which doesn't have any talk box sounds, one might focus on the vocals that are equalized to be thin like a telephone call, or the slow pounding rhythm, or you could tell about the words "couldn't get much higher" based on the Rolling Stone piece. The Jake Brown book Behind the Boards II has something from Bill Szymczyk about how Walsh first came up with an instrumental "blues-shuffle" recorded at Criteria, then stripped down to drums alone at Caribou and rebuilt from there, adding lyrics to make the final version we all know. Walsh is described as having layered about "six or seven" guitars on the recording, playing through a small amp with one Shure SM57 microphone aimed at it. Szymczyk says the thick guitar sound is from Joe himself, not from studio trickery. See chapter 1 of Brown's book. There's a lot of stuff there.
A second but minor problem with the audio file is that it shows up as 31 seconds. The maximum allowed by Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Music samples is 30 seconds. Perhaps it needs a touch of trimming. Binksternet (talk) 18:18, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There certainly is a lot of stuff. That's practically a whole new article section right there...! I can easily add something to the upload justification. I might even have a go at chopping off a whole second. Or maybe I'll re-do to include a bit with the talk box. But then, as I said, if we've got the whole thing available via VEVO/YouTube... why bother?? Martinevans123 (talk) 18:25, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So I've uploaded a new version, trimmed to exactly 30 seconds, and I've added "contextual significance" to the upload rationale. I've also started a "Production" section at the article. However, this upload at YouTube, at the Joe Walsh - Topic channel, is marked "Provided to YouTube by Universal Music Group", so I'd suggest adding that complete track as the official audio instead. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:21, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Binky.... "It wasn't like they played "musical chairs" with the guys in the band, they played musical bands". Martinevans123 (talk) 22:15, 18 July 2021 (UTC) [reply]
But this all begs the much more fundamental epistemological question: "can music ever be fully described in written words?", to which most people would almost certainly answer "No." Martinevans123 (talk) 13:58, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes this particular single is a bit tricky, though the site is the official Dutch charts database, it usually cites US and UK release dates. when I checked the label, it was not a US release, so I removed the '6'. though it's safe to assume the single was released around that time, as it charted on March 14 on Billboard — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ray1983a (talkcontribs) 19:55, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Ray1983a, is this the single you are referring to? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:24, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Time Out of Mind.

after checking the catalogue number for the source, 'Reelin in the years' turns out to be the German single, so altough it was the official release date in that country, I don't know if it would have a place on wikipedia as The release date, probably better to use US dates when available. this was the reason I checked these dates again — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ray1983a (talkcontribs) 21:49, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

See the details for the released parameter at Template:Infobox song. I assume for a single by a US band we would generally use the date of release in USA. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:11, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Why have you removed the fact that Bill Gates invested in an Israeli "security" company headed by Isabel Maxwell? Please explain that. --CarlPhilippTrump.me (talk) 16:03, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, well, overlooking the grammar issues that I mentioned in my edit summary: "deleting last para which looks like WP:SYNTH and also has grammar issues", I guess it was because the item said that Isabel was "the sister of Ghislaine Maxwell, which is accused of being Jeffrey Epstein's co-conspirator in trafficking child sex slaves", and you're topic banned from editing about Jeffrey Epstein? But this subject is probably best discussed, with the other three interested editors, over at Talk:Bill Gates#Multiple paragraphs connecting Gates to Jeffrey Epstein? By all means ask over there. Did Richard Feynman use post-nominals?

[edit]

You reverted my edit to the Richard Feynman page. Is there any evidence that Feynman cared about and used post-nominals? I doubt that he did. Also, his name is unique enough that the post-nominals aren't needed as a disambiguation tool either. I checked that the ForMemRS (as well as any other) post-nominals are missing from the article about Albert Einstein. I think that Richard Feynman deserves the same treatment. Hello, just wanted to touch base with you regarding Mo Farah's lead. I appreciate your participation on the talk page and just wanted to know your perspective. Apoorva Iyer (talk) 12:58, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Apoorva Iyer. Thanks for your note. I think that addition by User:Emily19911991 here was acceptable. I have just tweaked it in line with the Categories already listed for Farah. But I have no strong view - his place of birth is very clearly describe and linked at the star of the third paragraph of the lead. So it may be somewhat superfluous. Which one? - Rich Main page today: the first TFA by a promising author, the pictured DYK by my friend LouisAlain who is discouraged by an AN discussion, and one of the Recent deaths. Enjoy! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:02, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gosh yes, an embarrassment of German riches. And yes, Louis must be punished for his continued reckless misdemeanours. Am surprised he's not been indefinitely blocked for wilful unsourcing. How about we chain him in a dungeon and allow him to dictate his articles by semaphore on alternate Thursdays? Sounds fair to me. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:24, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Blame the German articles which often hide their sources well ;) - Pic of today's menu later, perhaps, first there's an article that would be best on Sunday, but is not ready, by LouisAlain of course. Sauces need to be added. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:33, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, administratively, that's far easer, I think. That HAL sounds like a right oddity, doesn't he. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:44, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Today: a woman in red (back to the beginning of the thread), two who died under "in memoriam" and LouisAlain missed - my first editnotice read: "Every editor is a human being" which is quoted from a comment by Geometry guy in a 2012 discussion on WP:AN. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:53, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I now see that User:LouisAlain[ has been indefinitely blocked for "using machine translation". Presumably he was asked to stop and refused? Martinevans123 (talk) 15:44, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There's this loooong thread on AN I stopped reading. I didn't make the world kinder, but improved one article (I said: Help wanted). The edit summary for the block was that he lied. It may have been a misunderstanding of question and/or answer. And should an admin block who was offended? After the discussion was for a topic ban? - I don't think LouisAlain is in any mood to want to work in such company. Perhaps talk to him? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:50, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like a bad block and very unfair. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:52, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There's a post-block "discussion", above "Help wanted" - wrong in time sort of, at least I didn't know of the block when I posted, only afterwards when I ran my watchlist. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:57, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I wish Louis Allain all the best, and success in his unblock request, if he chooses to make one. As you will probably have seen, I tried to ask a few questions about the block at AN, and was accused by Fram of being a troll: "I probably should simply ignore the above trolling by Martinevans123 (or how else should one call such utterly ridiculous requirements from someone who apparently hasn't bothered researching the facts of the case for themselves, but insinuates that if not all 6000+ articles are checked and demonstrably machine-translated, somehow this would influence the block for some reason)." And by Berig. Levivich kindly confirmed he'd checked three, but clarified that yes, he thinks all 6000+ should be deleted "except any that have been substantially edited by other editors." The thread was closed by Ymblanter. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:23, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I was invited today to contribute "forward" but said it stills hurts too much. I didn't watch, trying to nominate 3 DYK. Managed 2, too late for the other. Feel sorry for the time you spent. 4 users died this year, - do we really have to drive more away? I don't think LouisAlain is interested in this company. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:53, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I had assumed he had been blocked for using using machine translation (Levivich summarised how there was consensus that prohibits a non-speaker from using machine translation to translate articles). Or perhaps for insulting other editors by comparing them to dead Nazis. But no, it seems he was blocked for lying. Or at least "lying by omission". He was asked if he'd ever used GoogleTranslate and he said he never had. In fact, he had been using DeepL instead (and this is very easy to prove, apparently). He admitted that he had used DeepL. But this was still "lying by omission" to the Goggle question. So he was indef blocked. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:08, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We better be careful if lying by omission is a reason to be blocked, and questioning that is trolling, and otherwise respected admins endorse the block. I said in 2012 I never want to be one. WP:Great Dismal Swamp. You made my day by trying. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:18, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Once again the pigs rest in front of the fireplace.
Everything will be good if you are satisfied with the day,
And you can close the table tired of work.
When a warm cozy flame makes the evening even more beautiful,
Then the day, the tiring day is far from still barely remembering,
And your thought travels far from here, takes you to the blue country of your desires,

thanks for attending to my Prince Andrew comment

[edit]

Hi,

I really must be getting old, as I made a talk comment without realizing I'd already made essentially the same comment about a month ago. The recent news story had reminded me of what had bothered me, and I didn't remember I'd actually already asked about it. You found the phrase that was worrying me, and I shortened my comments on the talk page. Personally I think Andrew should have been honourable and confessed to contact, rather than lawyering up -- Roberts actually runs a charity about this stuff and she expected him to be a helpful witness, initially, which he should have been. Anyway, it really bothered me the illogic of that Times journalist saying in effect "Joe says he can't hear the TV because of that TNT explosion during the war, but we checked with experts and TNT is very loud and easy to hear." In that case summarizing the journalist as saying "experts disbelieve this explanation" would be ambiguous because the 'this explanation' that they disbelieve would be that everything was quiet including the TNT, but the "this explanation" that Joe gives they might have believed.

Maybe it doesn't matter much....Wikipedia is good about representing what people say and when it is stupid, it is seen as prima facie stupid. There is no need to comment on it. One can hope that there is an elite who realizes Andrew screwed up by not cooperating with Virginia Roberts and the journalist screwed up in his refutation of the sweating defense.

But I'd rather that someone who still has non-paywall access to the Times article can find some way of rewording that sentence not to be ambiguous.Createangelos (talk) 12:55, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ancestry research help

[edit]

Hi, Martin.

I was wondering if you could help me with finding a precise date of birth for one Amy Stuart, born in Sunderland in 1893? She later changed her name (unofficially) to Mamie c. 1910-12 during her dance troupe performing days. I know she was born in the final quarter of 1893, but I cannot find her precise date of birth. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, --Kieronoldham (talk) 11:54, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kieron. I guess this is her at FreeBMD. I will try and ask some people who have access to genealogy sites. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:01, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. That's her, Martin. She was killed in November or December 1919. Thanks for your help. Regards, --Kieronoldham (talk) 12:07, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ok. I now see it's Mamie Stuart. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:14, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. Various archive newspapers state she was either 25 or 26 when she died. Most say 26; some 25 Precise date of birth may help pinpoint her age when she died. Thanks again. Best regards, --Kieronoldham (talk) 12:19, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The birth date I have found - from unreliable sources, unfortunately (see my talk page) - is 24 November 1893. So, they would not have known her exact age at death, even at the time. Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:20, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Her date of birth has been discovered only recently, or at least after December 1919? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:40, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Presumably her family knew, but it seems that she was 25 when she disappeared but may have died after her 26th birthday. There may have been some confusion in the press - I haven't looked at the story in detail. Ghmyrtle (talk) 19:39, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Could I ask for assistance with another case, Martin? Is there any chance you or one of your contacts can find the full name of Gacy victim Michael M. Marino (Feb. 8, 1962 - Oct. 24, 1976?) He was identified in 1980 so some death records may log his date of death as 1980 instead of '76? I cannot find his middle name anywhere. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, --Kieronoldham (talk) 13:07, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Kieron. Hope you are well. I'm not sure anyone I know can help with American BMDs, but I will ask. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:38, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Martinevans123. All's well at the moment. Hope you're fine too. Appreciate your help here. Several websites I cannot access because, although they proclaim "our European visitors are important to us," we cannot access them.--Kieronoldham (talk) 14:38, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Am very well, thanks. Oh, I see. Feel free to paste them here. Or else just e-mail me (together with your $20 PayPal payment, lol). Martinevans123 (talk) 14:44, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Any updates with this, Martin? Thanks. :)--Kieronoldham (talk) 15:13, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Have you got those website addresses? I guess you have no idea where or when Marino was born? Martinevans123 (talk) 15:42, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
He was born February 8, 1962 and reported missing in October of 1976. Cook County medical examiners identified his body in March 1980. Several sites either request a subscription fee or are off-limits to European visitors. This is Marino's entry on ancestry.com; it is the closest match I can find.--Kieronoldham (talk) 16:13, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, you're searching from UK, not form US? Let's hope he wasn't like Harry S. Truman or Michael J. Fox or J. K. Rowling, or you may be searching a long time! Martinevans123 (talk) 16:20, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed I am, Martin. So many barriers I gave up trying to search last year. Was hoping yourself or an individual you know may be able to access one of these sites to find his middle name? Thanks in advance.--Kieronoldham (talk) 16:33, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder would User:Atsme be able to help us out? Martinevans123 (talk) 17:43, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy, Martin - in my capacity as a member of WP:VRT, I have received email notification from a family member confirming Mamie's birthdate as 24 November 1893. They also confirmed that she had a brother, James Smith Stuart born in 1897 – as well as her older sister, Edith Mary. I will get an OTRS ticket # assigned. Hope that helps. Any updates here, Martin? Hope you don't mind me asking again. :)--Kieronoldham (talk) 00:09, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh well. Here's the whole lot. Jankel genius. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:25, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for keeping on eye on the work. It'll probably need a number of eyes as it goes along, and if I can make sure that as many sources as possible are now verifiable online, that will help others too. I'll keep cleaning as I go along, though the next couple of days, I'll just have to let things hang. It'll be a good period anyway to let folk weigh in with any concerns regarding citations and the like.

Wtfiv (talk) 15:52, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My copy of Stan Gebler Davies' James Joyce: A Portrait of the Artist(1982) does not mention any failed exams in Chemistry. But presumably this would have been at Belvedere College, as he studied Modern Languages at UCD. Davies does point out, however, that his Irish degree was of no use for his being admitted to the Sorbonne to study Medicine. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:47, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the heads up on Davies! I've added him to the sources, so he'll be available to use to create verifiable links.
With respect to Joyce failing chemistry in Dublin. Please note that I didn't add the line; it was there before I came to the page. (Please see the Septembrr 2021 version edited by you with the Ellmann citation). I just tried to find the nearest passage in the citation that aligned with the text. Please feel free to modify the text and citation anyway you see fit. Alternatively, I'll attempt to see what other sources say, and add as follows. I may reword in line with Ellmann, but again, feel free to reword in line with the text as you see ft. One of my major goals righ now is less about content and just ensuring verifiable text-source integrity! So please make whatever changes you think are right!
And again, just know I jumped on your talk page mainly to say I appreciate you are keeping an eye on ensuring the text-source integrity too, as I start trying to dig out verifiable texts. I appreciate it! Wtfiv (talk) 02:45, 25 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course. It wasn't you who added that. It's been there a while. The "real" reason Joyce gave up his studies, according to Davies, as mentioned by Ellman, was that he was asked to pay the fees upfront. Davies also says he spent more time in other anatomical investigations - visiting prostitutes. Thanks for your note. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:12, 25 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

the latest talk about "unwerte Artikel" (worse than a red link) really troubles me. Are we going to have to pass exams to deliver an article? Almost the opposite of stubs, and often working on command (not without protest), informing us about the authors of sources and sufferers under the Nazis, - well, today I remember the banning of Br'er Rabbit begun nine years ago OTD, and I had to celebrate a birthday in bright sunshine. Today, that same birthday, but I go sing in choir for a funeral, of a woman who was supposed to sing last Sunday but suddenly died. Two recent deaths on the Main page and one waiting. It's part of life. I keep singing in defiance of the old dragon, death and fear. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:07, 13 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
today: see yourself, read about a hymn praying to not be on earth in vain, about a comics artist whose characters have character (another collaboration of the "perennial gang", broken by one of us banned), and in memory of the last prima donna assoluta, Edita Gruberová. I had to go to two grave sites last week, one who died now, one who died 10 years ago, so standing upright and in black seems appropriate. More colours - but subdued - can be had on hikes, - updated. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:05, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Courtesy notice - Sanctions for biographical articles

[edit]

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Thanks so much for the warning-that-isn't-a-warning. Seems I've been singled out for special attention. But I'm not sure why. From your comment at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard#Katie Price here: "The article is a huge BLP and NOT violation as it is.", it's pretty clear which side of the fence you'll come down on? I suggested at Talk:Katie Price, here, 8 days ago, that "... we return to the last "stable" consensus version, of three days ago, and then discuss possible edits one topic at a time." But my suggestion was ignored. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:21, 12 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You think it's just "idle gossip" that ""In September 2021, Price was taken to hospital after a car crash near Partridge Green, which is located close to her home in Horsham" and that "Later that month, Price pleaded guilty to driving drunk without insurance and while disqualified"? You think that somehow these facts are "BLP violations"? Martinevans123 (talk) 21:29, 12 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. I hate to 'template a regular', but do please take care not to copy/paste sentences that might breach our strict policies on copyright. This recent edit you made to the Chris Packham article appears to have directly lifted two sentences from this BBC News source. Many thanks for pointing that out, Nick. And thanks for fixing it. I have added "including foxes and badgers" directly from the BBC source, as I think that explains it further and is more graphic. I trust that's not a breach of copyright. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:18, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New Wikipedia Guideline Proposed which you might be interested in

[edit]

Hello. I am letting editors know who participated in the recent discussions that decided whether the Killing of David Amess should be called "killing, murder, or assassination", about a new Wikipedia essay being proposed for a new guideline. The essay, Wikipedia:Assassination, explains how the common definition of "assassination" does not determine an article's title. Only reliable sources can determine whether it is murder/killing or assassination. Since you participated in those recent discussions, I wanted to drop a message to you about this new proposal. If you want to leave your opinion about it, you can do so in this discussion. Have a good day and keep up the good editing! Elijahandskip (talk) 03:07, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Assassination of Spencer Perceval tells us that "He petitioned the Prince Regent before resuming his efforts with the Privy Council, the Home Office and the Treasury, only to receive the same polite refusals as before. He then sent a copy of his petition to every member of Parliament, again to no avail." But even John Bellingham starts ".. was an English merchant and perpetrator of the 1812 murder of Spencer Perceval, the only British prime minister to be assassinated." Isn't his hit notable

[edit]

Tony Steward's cover version has been made before David Parton's, and his charted. Your obsession with my description of who Tony is, made you overlook those wikiworthy facts. So this action https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1046989225 is wrong motivated and therefore abusive behaviour. 109.37.157.104 (talk) 23:23, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tony Steward is not notable on en.wiki, so I'm not sure that his cover version of "Isn't She Lovely" is necessarily notable. I'm also not sure that my one revert of your unexplained addition constitutes an "obsession". Which "wikiworthy facts" have I overlooked? The source you gave was this one, but I don't see any mention of Steward's single, or even David Parton's single, there. Perhaps Parton's single reaching No. 29 in the Dutch Nationale Hitparade could be added, if a suitable source could be found. But I don't think my initial revert was "wrong motivated and therefore abusive behaviour." Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:00, 26 October 2021 (UTC) p.s. Gerda's November corner

[edit]
November songs

In November, I can offer some reading, - three feast days in a row, reformation followed by All Saints' and All Souls. On All Saints, we sang in choir in a mass - a 2021 first - and rehearsed (with the other group) for the next such thing next Sunday. All Souls is the birthday of the subject of my first article who will play a major concert on 14 November. Today we "celebrate" the first DYK for which LouisAlain laid the base in a German sandbox, - needlessly complicated but working. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:56, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As you may have seen, that was also the last. - I thought of you seeing this angel! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:34, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, sadly. But I guess where de.wiki leads, en.wiki will eventually follow. Without any machine translation. of course. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:40, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
perhaps - what do we do about Wildes Holz? - The other day, I heard an opera conducted by Titus Engel. Had missed creation of that article. Do you think improving it is permitted? We have a translation of Börsenblatt, but taking it would be proxy, no? So start it from scratch, probably only to arrive at a similar thing? Kafka wherever I look. But Verdi was great! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:54, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

[edit]
Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add NoACEMM to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:13, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You actually have copies of Carmarthen Journal for March 27 and December 11 1908? I am guessing they have adverts for Jim Jones' farm sales. But I'm really not sure this is the level of detail needed for that article. We just need a good visible WP:RS saying that he wasn't really farming any more, by the time Dylan visited as a child, in the 1920s. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:25, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A good guess! They're online. I could replace the newspaper refs with a ref to an online essay that mentions the sales. Crystalshrub (talk) 17:17, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

PS Or I could simply give the online ref to the newspaper article: https://newspapers.library.wales/view/3763705/3763710/35/Pentowin.Crystalshrub (talk) 17:38, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That link shows an advert for the sale, on 22 September 1908, of Pentowin Farm. The Joneses sold that before moving to Fern Hill? But that really is too much detail. We just need a source that says that Jim Jones did no farming at Fern Hill. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:46, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Closure of Amedeo Modigliani RfC

Hi, discussion at this RfC seems to be over. I was wondering if you could maybe close the RfC, or suggest who should close it alternatively? I am just not sure how to proceed. Thank you. Sansgloire (talk) 21:00, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reminding me. It's generally best if someone not involved in the discussion closes an RfC. And besides, I don't really like closing stuff, I much prefer opening! But I agree, after 20 days, discussion seems to have ended. I'd suggest waiting a couple of days and hoping that a passing non-involved editor will close. The result seems to point mostly one way, but it's not landslide. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:15, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, let's wait a few more days. Should I make a closure request at Wikipedia:Closure requests in case nobody shows up? Thanks. :) Sansgloire (talk) 22:34, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

thegenealogist.co.uk

[edit]

Please see the warning left on User talk:Wgc120. That user has an obvious WP:COI with this commercial company, and has been spamming it for years. If the material is relevant to the article, the references can be replaced with direct references to the "Who Do You Think You Are?" epsisode, as I've done on a number of the affected articles. OhNoitsJamie Talk 14:44, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not User:Wgc120. I don't have any COI, thanks. The references to thegenealogist.co.uk generally have far more information than the TV programme itself. Some of your edits just remove all mention of the WDYTYA programme wholesale? Martinevans123 (talk) 14:51, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe that an appearance on WDYTYA? automatically merits a paragraph on every subject that appears; celebrities appear on hundreds of shows, we don't need to note every appearance. In cases where others have reworked the material into biolographical prose, I've replaced the reference with the BBC link, which is sufficient for WP:V. OhNoitsJamie Talk 15:31, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And I'm not suggesting blanket automatic addition to every bio article. I guess that's just appropriate for the Who Do You Think You Are? (British TV series) article. I think it rather depends on whether new biographical information (usually in terms of ancestry) about that person, is presented in the programme. It may have been already reported elsewhere, but overlooked. I am still a bit concerned that User:Wgc120, through their COI spamming, has effectively spoiled thegenealogist.co.uk as a supplementary source for any of those articles. Press review articles, about a programme episode, are often forthcoming and at least allow a written alternative to BBC iPlayer. But these can be of variable quality. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:55, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thought you might like this. Not many Floyd tribute bands throw in "Atom Heart Mother" with brass and choir.... Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 22:28, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for the link, Threesie. I'll try and put a couple of hours, in a darkened room, aside for that one. But it's another challenge! I see we have a article for Segóbriga, but not yet one for Pink Tones (only something deeper in Spanish). Martinevans123 (talk) 22:51, 16 December 2021 (UTC) p.s. watching that film, in my teens, was "a formative experience" to say the least.[reply]
meanwhile... here's a nice tribute 32 years later....

Here is a snowman a gift a boar's head and something blue for your listening pleasure. Enjoy and have a wonderful 2022 M. MarnetteD|Talk 02:43, 19 December 2021 (UTC) [reply]
Wow, thanks MarnetteD. What a brilliant collection. Very enjoyable. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:35, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you enjoyed them M. I made a CD with those and several others to give to friends 11 or 12 years ago. Does anyone even burn a CD anymore? Gosh the tech changes so fast :-) MarnetteD|Talk 09:44, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If I manage to get a fresh quill and some new vellum, I'll copy you out a few bangin' manuscripts... Martinevans123 (talk) 09:54, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That is wonderful M! I'll be smiling all day. Cheers MarnetteD|Talk 10:06, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
p.s. I have that one. And this gem was one of the best of 1979! Martinevans123 (talk) 17:47, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You are so right about that 1979 album. 3 Kings is great to sing along with while driving to see Xmas lights. Did you know that someone downloaded [58] to the tube of you? Something to enjoy later this week :-) MarnetteD|Talk 19:17, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Even after 43 years, "Hammond Song" is less of a song and more of a higher spiritual experience. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:36, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You just took me on a memory trip to the apartment I rented in college where I played (and played and played) that album. Thank you so much! MarnetteD|Talk 19:41, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Haha. I used to listen to it (over and over) on one of these! Martinevans123 (talk) 19:48, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Martin, I try to keep this page up to date. A few days ago another editor pointed out that the music section had no cited sources. If you know of a recognised one that lists all his releases (not just "Fish People") or at least all his singles, would you please add it for me. Thanks in advance. Scrabble1968 (talk) 15:16, 21 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll probably add it for me, haha, but sure. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:18, 21 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fish people! Yay! --Tryptofish (talk) 18:20, 21 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think this would make it as at WP:RS at St Hilda of Grantham: [59]? Martinevans123 (talk) 18:46, 21 December 2021 (UTC) Or maybe this one at the Dire MTV?[reply]

Rate Your Music lists all Sayle's singles and albums - is this WP? I don't want to add it if it isn't, but if it is, perhaps you would. https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/alexei-sayle Happy Xmas. Scrabble1968 (talk) 15:11, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately not. WP:RSP says: "Rate Your Music was deprecated in the 2019 RfC. The content on Rate Your Music is user-generated, and is considered generally unreliable.". Martinevans123 (talk) 15:16, 24 December 2021 (UTC) Thanks anyway. Merry Christmas to you also![reply]

A stick for you

This is all Santa could come up with on short notice.

It's been a rough year.

Santa's elf (talk) 13:09, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How simply charming.. I can tell you're a real stickler for present giving. I shall treasure it. Almost as much fun as Even more fun than Germany's version of the Elf on the Shelf! Martinevans123 (talk) 13:17, 24 December 2021 (UTC) [61][reply]
Those endless years slogging away in college German classes have now paid off. Anyway, Santa said this stick was a lonely gift that hadn't been gifted to a single page in the entire global Wikisphere. He didn't have the heart to send it to the Island of Misfit Toys. Many thanks, Ceoil. And to you and yours. Best wishes. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:55, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Am going through a Jaco Pastorius period atm[63] mind is- really, suitably - bent, but meanwhile on earth and rock and roll land: here is some Holger Czukay. Ceoil (talk) 08:34, 25 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Ceoil. Classic track, classic album. Pastorius was brilliant with Joni. And hard to believe that was 1969. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:24, 25 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Jeez. Your breath of knowledge never seaces to amaze, noting you were editing Shadows and Light just this April. Ceoil (talk) 05:49, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Haha. There's not much music I don't like! Pastorius' premature death, at the age of 35, was a wholly avoidable tragedy. What a senseless loss. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:01, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
