- Thanks Cielquiparle, leaving this link here for my easy reference. List of WP:MILHIST articles without references, stood at 1,861 before the drive started and has already reduced by 40 or so. We only had two unreferenced BLPS which we resolved before the drive began - Dumelow (talk) 13:19, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

DYK LaTasha Barnes
[edit]Hello Dumelow, Yes, I've finished going through the entire article to find needed citations and remove broken links. Sorry it took longer than anticipated. Sincerely, Wroliver (talk) 18:57, 10 November 2024 (UTC) Draft:LaTasha Barnes - Wikipedia
Hello Dumelow, Thanks for the feedback. I will take care of those things soon, and let you know when I'm finished. Wroliver (talk) 13:59, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
Hello Dumelow, You had 3 flags for me in final section. Here's how I addressed them: 1-BS degree verification--the information lives on a PDF which is on her webpage at the University of Arizona, but I understand that we can't use PDFs. So, I eliminated that paragraph on her education, since her master's degree is mentioned elsewhere and verified. 2-Her 2021 Bessie Award now has a citation. I did not add a cite for the first sentence in the first awards paragraph, since both the 2021 and 2023 awards are cited immediately thereafter. 3-I found a different source for the Mad Hot Ball award; hopefully it is ok. Let me know if anything else is needed, and thanks for your patience! Wroliver (talk) 15:44, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
Also, the "reply" button in my area of the DYK page is not working, and there is no "edit" button at the top of the section, which is why I have been using your talk page directly. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks, Wroliver (talk) 15:59, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
Hi Wroliver, I've approved the hook about her having been a sergeant. It should now work its way through the system and appear on the main page at some point in the future. DYK is unfortunately set up a little differently to other pages. The nominations are on subpages such as Template:Did you know nominations/LaTasha Barnes so the usual reply links don't work. If you watch (click the star at the top) that page it will be noted a few days before it's due to appear on the main page. Good work on improving this article, it is in much better shape now. All the best - Dumelow (talk) 16:17, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for your help! This was my first Wikipedia article, and now I'm better informed on how to do a good job.

Appreciation for your DYK efforts (now featured on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts!)
[edit]The Gen Z inspiration barnstar | |
Hi Dumelow,
I wanted to extend a heartfelt thanks for all your amazing work on featured content over the years, and let you know that one of your DYKs (for Flat-roofed pub) has gone viral on TikTok and Instagram. For the last month, my team at the Wikimedia Foundation has been remixing DYKs into short videos for these platforms to learn if this could be a way to help new generations find their way to the encyclopedia and maybe start editing. The flat-roofed pubs video has been the most successful one so far, reaching about 300,000 people and generating thousands of likes and comments! This has given our new TikTok account enough followers to start linking directly to Wikipedia content, and we hope this will bring in more readers and potential future editors :) So thank you again for all the work that you do on the wikis, and for sparking the curiosity of younger audiences who might be more inclined now to learn and get involved onwiki! Maryana Pinchuk (WMF) (talk) 16:43, 15 November 2024 (UTC) |
- Thanks for dropping by Maryana, that's amazing! I've had a few articles spike in interest from being featured on Depths of Wikipedia before and it's great to see the WMF trying something in this direction. Best wishes for the project and hopefully it converts a few more readers into editors. Do you have a link to your channels? I'm not massively au fait with Tikitok or Instagram but it'd be great to have a look. - Dumelow (talk) 17:03, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Absolutely! Here are the links to the channels where we've been publishing the videos:
- As you can see, we've tried all manner of DYK topics, but the humble flat-roofed pub really stands out in terms of engagement. Better than Taylor Swift or The Avengers, even If you're working on any future DYKs that seem like they might have whatever secret sauce flat-roofed pubs had (I suspect that might be: topic with specific regional appeal that isn't too serious and has some room for people to debate), please let me know! Maryana Pinchuk (WMF) (talk) 18:29, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Maryana. Wow, it really did take off didn't it? It did pretty well on its DYK appearance (21k views) but others of mine easily surpassed it:
- ... that in 1952 a 19-year-old footman shot Lady Derby and three members of staff (23k views)
- ... that French Army infantrymen wore red trousers (example pictured) from 1829 until 1914?(25k views)
- ... that the legs of the statue of Alfred the Great in Southwark (pictured) are at least 1,600 years older than the torso? (28k views)
- ... that in 1253 Henry III of England ordered that his white bear (sculpture pictured) be permitted to swim and hunt in the River Thames? (28.5k views)
- ... that the Hungry Tree in Dublin is "eating" a park bench (pictured)? (30k views)
- ... that the 1514 horned helmet of Henry VIII (pictured) has spectacles and a toothy grimace? (36k views)
- ... that on special occasions, the city of Gloucester supplies a pie made from lampreys (lamprey pictured) to the British monarch? (39k views)
- These tend more towards the historical so perhaps not much there to encourage debate on social media. I will have a think if I have any that might fit the bill - 22:20, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Maryana. Wow, it really did take off didn't it? It did pretty well on its DYK appearance (21k views) but others of mine easily surpassed it:
- Some articles that came to mind - Dumelow (talk) 22:16, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Dumelow this is fantastic, thank you! Some of these were already on our radar from having performed well on the main page (we're filtering for high-PV DYKs), and others also look very promising for generating commentary... I'll keep you posted if we manage to get another viral sensation from your list Maryana Pinchuk (WMF) (talk) 15:33, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- My most-viewed article ever is TV pickup; it periodically gets attention when the matter is discussed in the media usually in relation to major TV events. It's a niche British subject with some mass appeal through soap operas and sports broadcasts.
- Earl Hays Press who produce fake newspapers, products etc. for film productions
- Rockwood & Company shipping department fire which saw a flood of molten chocolate in New York in 1919.
- Elver Eating World Championships a British-based competition in which people compete to each small eels.
- RentAHitman.com, a fake site that has helped to prosecute people looking for a hitman
- Coat of arms of the Football Association which has lions in the colours of the England football kit.
- Hedgehog Flavour Crisps, self explanatory!
- Economy coffin, developed in the 18th century and designed to be reused by multiple people
- A Journey Around My Room, a 1794 travelogue of a single room
- Bourton-on-the-Water model village which has a scale model of a model of a model of a model village?
- Statue of Heracles, Arcachon which has a detachable penis
- Nottingham cheese riot of 1766 in which the mayor was knocked over by a rolling wheel of cheese
- London garrotting panics of the 19th century, has some good pictures of outlandish outfits to deter muggers
- Blackcurrant production in the United States which explains why only 0.1% of Americans have eaten a blackcurrant and 99.1% are produced in Europe.
- I've done a series of advertising related articles such as Man from Del Monte, Milk's gotta lotta bottle, Drinka pinta milka day that generally do quite well but presumably among an older audience who remember them.
- Sycamore Gap tree I created years ago, it got huge additional attention after it was chopped down in 2023 and likely will do again when the perpetrators are sentenced this December.
