POTD 2010-01-19
[edit]Hi Dumelow. Further to this edit, I was not confused. The template that had been tampered with by Microxsolutions was {{POTD/2010-01-19}}. What took me to it is that I have {{Pic of the day}} on my user page. Seeing no picture, and instead seeing an external link to the other user’s company website, is what twigged me that something was amiss. When I went to {{POTD/2010-01-19}}, it was clearly tampered with as both its template page and edit history showed.
When I reverted the edit, the problem was resolved.
Now, where I may have been mistaken is that the template accessed by {{Pic of the day}} and by the Main Page may not be the same one. Is that the case? And, if so, should I have filed a report with WP:VP/T instead of WP:ERRORS? What do you think? I would appreciate your thoughts since they’ll give me a better understanding of the various dimensions to this issue. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 01:18, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, SpikeToronto. Apologies for saying that you might have been confused, I initially thought that you were under the impression that an edit to the POTD template affected the main page. Once I re-read your post it became clear that this wasn't the case and I reverted my comment. My reply was made to MaterialScientist who thought that the main page POTD was unprotected.
- You are correct - the main page POTD comes from a separate template that is (initially) identical to the standard POTD template. The main page template is protected and therefore editable only by admins. The main page errors page is, strictly speaking, only for main page errors so perhaps not exactly the right place to request page protection for non-main page elements. These can be made at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection, but they are usually only made where a page comes under repeated vandalism in a short space of time. In addition you can ask for general advice in such situations at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard which is watchlisted by many admins and editors. There is also Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism where you can request that vandals be blocked from editing and Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents where you can report other incidents that require admin attention.
- Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) is just for discussion of the technical workings of Wikipedia. Sorry for this being so long, if you have any further questions on this or another issue please feel free to contact me again - Dumelow (talk) 12:59, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Dumelow! I already knew most of this stuff regarding the various places for reporting various “things”. My mistake was in my assumption that {{Pic of the day}} — which would have been picking up {{POTD/2010-01-19}} on that day — fed straight to the Main Page. I should have looked at the coding for the Main Page. Had I done so, I would have known that the error was not with the Main Page, per se, and thus not to go to WP:ERRORS. I’ll be more thorough next time (which is ironic since it was in trying to be more thorough in the first place that I ended up at WP:ERRORS!). :) I was trying to preclude repeats of this occuring on those pages to which {{Pic of the day}} is linked. Like me, scores of other wikieditors have {{Pic of the day}} embedded on their user pages, so I was attempting to be proactive. As for MaterialScientist, while, like me, he may have misunderstood this matter, he’s a great Aministrator for manning the AIV desk late at night! Thanks again Dumelow. — SpikeToronto 15:46, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

- The current in the news read: "with runner-up Yulia Tymoshenko stating that she will contest the result". Tymoshenko did not state that, she has not said a word in public about the election. This sort of simplification is close to misinforming the readers... "fellow Tymoshenko party members protest" is a much better wording. — Mariah-Yulia • Talk to me! 12:19, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

- Thanks Martin. As I read the wheel war guidelines it is acceptable to revert an admin action once but any more is not. Thus I wasn't wheel warring. However it would have resulted in a lengthy discussion about it at Talk:Main Page that I simply didn't have time to get involved with. I am glad that someone else noticed the situation and resolved it. Like I said at Talk:Main Page I think the whole basis of this situation is ridiculous and that removal of the image from the ITN section was an over reaction, which I still stand by - Dumelow (talk) 14:07, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for fixing that, I was wondering why I couldn't see it in my usual browser. How do you know if an image is in the ad/ subdirectory and how did you fix it? Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 00:48, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- The following code (added to one's monobook.css or equivalent) places a red border around any image in an /ad subdirectory:
img[src*="/ad/"] { border: solid red 10px !important; }
- (I don't know what, if anything, is displayed if the image is blocked.)
- An image at Commons always has the same file directory structure when uploaded locally, so the only solution is to re-upload it under a different name (with the usual low odds that the new version will be placed in an /ad subdirectory). —David Levy 02:01, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
- Ah, thanks. Since it probably won't work with my ad blocking browser I will just reupload with another name if I notice the image is blocked. Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 10:25, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:IceLogo.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:IceLogo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Cloudbound (talk) 22:48, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
NPOV concern on 2010 South Darfur attack
[edit]I have an NPOV concern on 2010 South Darfur attack. The body of the article indicates it is not known who started the attack, but the intro implies the SPLA did. I'm concerned this might go on ITN implicitly blaming the SPLA. You're more familiar with the sources than I am. What do you think?--Chaser (talk) 16:12, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
- Is it the first sentence you are concerned about? I didn't mean it to sound that way. The SPLA are the only combatant known to have taken part, the other party is disputed, so I'd leave the SPLA in the lead. I have changed it a bit to hopefully sound less POV. What do you think? - Dumelow (talk) 16:53, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, much better with quick mention of the other party. I'm being picky because this will be prominently linked from the main page.--Chaser (talk) 17:04, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Wording
[edit]What do you think of "A clash in South Darfur kills 58 and raises tensions along the internal border." The news sources have been referring to this as a clash rather than an attack, so re-titling the article might be appropriate as well, in line with the mystery about who started it all.--Chaser (talk) 17:21, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds good. I have moved it per your suggestion. You may want to put "claims" into the tagline somewhere as the casualty figures come from one tribal source alone (the other parties have given no figures). I haven't got much free time now and won't be on for a while so feel free to change whatever else you need to. Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 17:32, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Hadrian's Wall Milecastles
[edit]Starting again at the top of this one. Just noticed the completed MC10 article. Nice job! I hardly dare ask, but would you like to do some more? If so, how about 16 to 20? Sammy_r (talk) 21:45, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hello again. Yeah I would have no problem with taking on a few more, 16-20 sound fine. I have slowed down my wikipedia contributions due to being quite busy in real life but should be able to work through them fine (if slowly). If you could send me the relevant scans from the handbook for these ones that would be great. Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 08:00, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for that - I'll try and do that tomorrow. Sammy_r (talk) 07:56, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Hi. I noticed you were working on the Hadrian's Wall Milecastles (and doing a better job than me, if you don't mind me saying!) I thought I might do one every day or so (I was about to start on MC6 when Google alerted me to your work on MC9), so it may be worth pooling our efforts, agreeing on a consistent format, etc. What do you think? Sammy_r (talk) 15:02, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds good. I am away from my PC until Monday but after that we should be able to start on them properly. If you want to think about consistency and whatever until then and let me know where and how you want to start I am more than happy to collaborate on the articles. Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 17:25, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- Good news! Today's Friday, so I'll do a bit to your MC9 on Monday, (as it's still in development), and you can see what you think.
- I was never very convinced about what to do with turrets, but it seems we came to the same conclusion independently (have associated turrets on the same page as the milecastle), so it's probably best to let it stand. There's a good page on Leahill Turret, so perhaps we should just create entries for significant turrets?
- I like the idea of having a separate section for Excavations - though I'd like to expand it to 'Excavations and investigations' (which covers the work done by people like Stukeley).
- I like the brief statement of what a turret is in 'Associated Turrets'.
- I've principally been using the latest edition of Handbook to the Roman Wall and www.pastsape.org as starting sources, and seeing where they take me. I also have Breeze & Dobson's "Hadrian's Wall", though that really isn't specific enough.
- Please could you also cast your more-experienced eye over my Knag Burn Gateway entry - I'm thick-skinned, so no need to be polite!
- One last thought on turret IDs - should they be upper or lower case? OS maps have them as upper. Breeze has them as lower in "Handbook to the Roman Wall" and "Hadrian's Wall". Hunter Davies (not really a reliable source, but does his research thoroughly), has them as upper. Sounds like it doesn't matter, but we should be consistent. Have you any sources or thoughts?
- Sammy_r (talk) 13:32, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- Good news! Today's Friday, so I'll do a bit to your MC9 on Monday, (as it's still in development), and you can see what you think.
- Hello, just started to catch up with the wiki things I missed over the past few days. I agree with you about separate pages for notable turrets, where there is enough info to warrant a separate page. Agreed with regards to "Excavations and investigations". Looks like you have much better sources than I do, I was relying mainly on pastscape for my info. I got into writing about milecastles through noticing that most didn't have articles and had no real interest in them before, my background is in engineering and not archaeology. As such I don't really know whether to have the turrets in upper or lower case, I will continue to do them upper case for now as that is how I started. We can always change them all later if needed. I'll take a look over Knag Burn Gateway for you later, it looks quite good to me already though (nice to get some pics in there as well!). I like what you have done with the milecastles template too, to bring in the associated structures. Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 08:45, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
- Just done the first round of changes - more to come - taking longer than I thought. Please hang fire for the moment. Sammy_r (talk) 10:01, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
- It took some doing (I got caught up doing an article for the Military Way, but I got there in the end). Could you check out your Milecastle 9 entry and let me know what you think - have a play about with it, etc.Sammy_r (talk) 14:40, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- I have just taken a look at it and made some minor changes. The layout is brilliant and the article looks pretty decent to me. If you are happy with it also do you want to move it to the main space? - Dumelow (talk) 16:14, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Made it live yesterday. I'll start revisting Milecastles 0-5 over the coming days, and then start on 11-15. Do you want to do 6-10? If you'd like to scan any relevant pages of Handbook to the Roman Wall and send them on to you, let me know. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sam.roebuck (talk • contribs) 07:47, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hello. I moved the sandbox version of the article to the mainspace (over the top of the version you copy pasted) so that the edit history was preserved. You can do this yourself with any subpages you create by using the "move" option (located on the dropdown menu to the right of the watch button in the new layout). You won't be able to do this where there is already a page by that name (as the target page must be deleted) but if you need that doing let me know as I can do it (I am an admin). I'll get on with 6-10. I have emailed you with my email address so you can contact me directly with scanned pages if you want. If you want you can email me any references you have for 6-10 and I'll add them in, or (if it's easier) just follow on behind me and add them in yourself.
- Finally, I am going to nominate Milecastle 9 for WP:DYK. This means that it will appear on the mainpage in the "Did You Know?" section at some point in the near future (usually a week or so). I will include your name as an author so don't be surprised when someone drops by with a thankyou message! You can nominate any article you create (as long as it is longer than 1500 characters and is new or expanded). Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 10:18, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- I didn't know about the move option - I'm a fairly recent Wikipedian, so I tend to learn something new every day. I'd picked up from somewhere that it was good practice to embolden the article's name wherever it appeared, but looking at other articles I'm starting to think that it's only necesary to do the first one. I'll correct that in MC9. Thanks also for the credit in "DYK". Now that I know about it, I have a couple of other articles in mind that I could nominate! I got your e-mail, by the way. I'll reply on Monday with some scanned pages from HTTRW. It does seem to contain information in addition to that on Pastscape.Sammy_r (talk) 11:23, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- You guys are doing well with these milecastles. Would an picture of Milecastle 9 be helpful? (I see the article says there are some remains ...) I could pop over to Denton one evening and take some shots. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:45, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Martin. With regards to MC9 pastscape says that in 1993 "The south part of the milecastle now shows as the very faintest trace of a platform; not surveyable" so I don't know how much you'll be able to see at the site. By all means take if you're interested, the remains should be in the field next to some terrace houses (Stephenson Terrace), but I don't know what's left after all that ploughing. Someone has produced a nice overlay for Google Maps (and Google Earth) that marks on the milecastles etc with links to websites with records which is quite handy (it shows a nice bit of wall viewable at nearby Heddon). Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 11:13, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- That would be much appreciated, Martin. Thanks. As Dumelow says, be prepared to spend a while looking for it, though. If an English Heritage Field Surveyor reports the platform as 'barely visible' . . .
- But you do realise that you might land yourself with a job here. I have a bit of a shopping list of Hadrian's Wall photos in the Newcastle area. As part of my job, I have to walk the wall from Whittle Dene Reservoir to Bowness-on-Solway every year. This year will be in early June, so I'm planning on taking my camera along, but will only be able to do Wall Miles 17 onwards.Sammy_r (talk) 11:24, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- Wow, that sounds like a nice job! I walked the whole route a few years ago, from west to east, with my uncle who knows quite a lot about the history of the wall. By all means send me your requests. I think I'll take a look at 9 but won't be holding my breath about finding anything. By the way I'm quite surprised Brunton Turret is still a redlink because that's one of the best surviving turrets. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:10, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- It is a good job! The downside is that it doesn't really pay the rent, so I have to do other jobs as well. Thanks for the offer - I'll draw up a list and send it to you early next week.--Sammy_r (talk) 22:00, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Hadrian's Wall Articles
[edit]Hello. After being involved in the discussion about the Milecastle nom at DYK last week I thought I'd have a look and see what else could be added to the collection of Hadrian's Wall articles. I see that you are doing a lot of good work in this area and it is something that I have always been interested in. I noticed that Pike Hill Signal Tower was a redlink so got together a few sources and created the article. I used your template for Milecastle's (with some changes) as the basis. Would you mind taking a look over it please? Thanks. Nick Ottery (talk) 08:10, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Nick. Very nice work over at Pike Hill Signal Tower, I will take a more in depth look this afternoon but it looks excellent to me at first glance. I don't, in fact, know a great deal about the Romans in Britain being more of an interested amateur. User:Sam.roebuck knows more than I do, he is responsible for creating the layout templates for the milecastles (if you have any questions to ask he is always very helpful). As it stands we are gradually working our way along the wall, filling in milecastle articles. Thus far Sam has done some sterling work on MCs 0-5 and has moved on to 11-15, with me doing 6-10. User:A little insignificant has also expressed interest and is planning on working back from MC 80. I don't know if you are interested in jumping in as well, but you would be most welcome (there's plenty of redlinks to go around!). Sorry for such a long reply, thanks for reviewing my DYK, by the way - Dumelow (talk) 09:48, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Nick. I've just had a look myself, and was also very pleased with the article. I've made a couple of very minor changes, but they're so small as to be not worth mentioning. As Dumelow says, we'd love you to have a go at some Milecastles. As you've found, pastscape.org is very useful. I also have a copy of the latest "Handbook to the Roman Wall", and if you'd like me to scan any pages and send them on to you, just let me know.
- I've just finished 0-5, and I'll be continuing with 11-15. I noticed that Dumelow seems to have finished 6-10, and I'm hoping that he can take on 16-20 (Rob?) If you're interested would you be prepared to take 21-25? If so, you'll find a template on my user space, and also a little tool for creating a new entry from that template.-Sammy_r (talk) 14:56, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, my real life first name is Rob if you prefer to use that. I still have MC10 to finish, but once that is done I'll take a stab at 16-20. Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 15:09, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
- I'm very happy to help out with creating articles, however, a quick glance through Pastscapes suggests that many of the Milecastles have very little information available, sometimes just an approximate site (see Milecastle 77 for example). Unless there is information in other sources it seems that a lot of these might be better captured in a list with a short paragraph for each one. The Milecastles (such as Milecastle 9) with more detailed information available could of course have a dedicated article linked to from the list? Thoughts? Nick Ottery (talk) 08:56, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- You are right that there seems to be little info for some milecastles. But there's also the info on the two turrets to consider as well (which takes up a fair bit of space). In addition there are usually some excavations undertaken to try to find the milecastle which can be documented, I still think it is worth maintaining separate pages for consistency and in case any new info crops up. For example see what Sam has done with MCs 0-5, many of which have never been found. I see your point though, maybe Sam has some extra info in his sources? BTW I found a little bit in a journal about a century stone found near MC77 which you could include here. Let me know if you want me to email the PDF to you. Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 09:20, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed. I think consistency is the watchword for this exercise. In the longer term, I was also toying with the idea of including a description of the curtain wall around each Milecastle / Turret. I've been thinking of stuff that would interest a wall archaeologist at each structure, and I reckon in the case of, for example, MC77, I would be looking for
- something about the original turf wall
- when it was rebuilt in stone
- was it rebult in sandstone or limestone
- to what wall type (thickness, foundation material, type, etc.)
- were there any changes in wall type somewhere in that wall mile (e.g. at Planetrees)
- These are all factors that helped to build a chronology of the wall itself, and gave indications as to which legions were involved in the construction.
- Then, "Handbook to the Roman Wall" also gives some info about the ditch, vallum and Military Way at each structure (where available). So, there's potential for loads more info at each structure, even though it may not be available (or just supposition) at the moment. I'll also be walking much of the wall line in June, and wherever possible taking a photo of the Milecastle's site, and any extant Turrets. There is no academic work that gives this much detail in one place, so it certainly would be a worthwhile exercise (albeit quite a long term one, I think). - Sammy_r (talk) 10:46, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Arthur Cumming GAN
[edit]Hi Dumelow, I've reviewed Arthur Cumming (Royal Navy officer) for GA. Overall I believe the article is very good. I have a few comments/suggestions, etc. though which I think should be dealt with prior to promotion. If you could take a look and respond when you get a chance, I'd appreciate it. There is no rush, though, as I understand that you might not be able to edit except on weekends. The link for the review page is here: Talk:Arthur Cumming (Royal Navy officer)/GA1. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 04:27, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking at the GAN. I have taken a quick look and started responding to your review (work has finished for Christmas so I have a little time now!). Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 17:13, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
- No worries. The changes look good. I made a couple of minor tweaks myself (which you might want to just check you agree with), but I have passed the article now as it is easily a GA in my opinion. Well done and have a safe and happy Christmas! Cheers, AustralianRupert (talk) 21:44, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for fixing those bits I missed. Merry Christmas to you too - Dumelow (talk) 09:18, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
