How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Returning to Dowhill

[edit]

Hi, recently I had another read-through of Dowhill Castle and I think it really is in pretty good shape, barring the need for a copy edit. What do you think about a possible GAN? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 14:21, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pickersgill-Cunliffe, I was working through my backlog of potential GAs and thought Dowhill would be a good one too. I'll keep an eye on it and if you want to nom will be ready to dive in to lend a hand - Dumelow (talk) 07:43, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a little copyediting and have corrected a few minor mistakes, although I think the architecture section could benefit from another going-over, it not being a speciality of mine. The content seems pretty secure, but I think a more modern source demonstrating the castle to still be part of the Blairadam estate, and perhaps generally discussing the castle's relation to the house, would be useful if it exists. Will keep an eye out. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 12:26, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Pickersgill-Cunliffe, not an expert but I'll have a run through the architecture section. I had a look on ProQuest and found a newspaper article in The Scotsman that gives it as belonging to "Dowhill", which ran an open garden day. From that I've found some mentions, eg. this 2015 newsletter and this contractors website that place it with the Maitland Dougall family of Dowhill House (which is the property immediately north of the castle) - Dumelow (talk) 12:49, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The Dowhill estate and house connection is mentioned in the Gazetteer for Scotland, which I am not familiar with but seems to be linked with University of Edinburgh and The Royal Scottish Geographical Society - Dumelow (talk) 12:52, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I suppose it's unsurprising that the late 19thC sources are out of date as to ownership! I think the Gazetteer should be reliable enough with its academic provenance, so I've added it at the end of the article. Thanks very much for finding that. I don't think there are any other glaring absences in the article, but am willing to be corrected if you think otherwise? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:19, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good Pickersgill-Cunliffe. I've rejigged the architecture section to try to keep the parts relating to the original structure and the extension together so hopefully it reads a little more clearly. Feel free to amend as you like - Dumelow (talk) 13:24, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that improves the readability considerably. I'll nominate it now, under architecture, unless you've any objections? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:41, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Pickersgill-Cunliffe, go for it! - Dumelow (talk) 14:27, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Photo

[edit]

Hi, thanks for the message about the Zigzag House photo. I find the image policies with FUR and license the hardest to navigate. I wonder if you might be able to update the one that is needed for the photo. It helps me to reverse engineer the fair use and license. Thanks much for the review. Bruxton (talk) 15:09, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bruxton. I am not an expert but I don't think you can claim fair use at all for a structure that still stands and is publicly accessible. The argument being why should Wikipedia infringe Google's copyright when anyone could walk up to it and take their own photograph to release under a free license - Dumelow (talk) 16:40, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
HiBruxton. Yes, because it is illustrating the appearance of the Streetview product (as per the fair use statement), for which there is no free alternative. I've removed the image from here as fairuse images aren't permitted outside of mainspace (if you add a colon immediately before file it converts it to a link). All the best - Dumelow (talk) 17:10, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dumelow, hope all is well. I've created an article on the above cricketer who was also a major-general in the 10th Hussars. You might be interested in expanding his article! Cheers, StickyWicket (talk) 09:42, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi StickyWicket, glad to see you're still on with these. I'll take a look, though his name will be frustratingly common! I note there's a photo of him as a major here, that could be uploaded under fair use even if it can't be determined to be PD - Dumelow (talk) 13:42, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Scratch that there's a photo of him as a general and an obituary in this 1909 magazine article which will be fair game - Dumelow (talk) 13:44, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There's a few more to go yet with the Europeans cricket team to come! Thanks for finding that, it's identical to the wording used in the source I found, seems they copied it from that Gazette. Correct license

[edit]

I believe I found the correct license for the image in the Door Tree article. I added it as one of the photos in the article. License for "Never published before 2003 and created before 1902". No idea when the author died. Let me know what you think. Thanks Bruxton (talk) 20:02, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bruxton, looks plausible to me. These ones are always hard as there's no real way to prove that it wasn't published before 2003 - Dumelow (talk) 18:17, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Right an exaustive online search does not reveal anything. I read about the other guy in the photo J. Walter Basset and they discovered some trove of photos. Looks like I can semi-confidently say that the photo was likely discovered in 1975, published in 2011 from an attic in Mt. Carmel. And he died in 1968. I went down the rabbit hole. Hi Dumelow, just after an opinion! Do you think it's worth trying to get the above article to GA class, or do you think it's too reliant on a couple of sources for that to happen? StickyWicket (talk) 12:37, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi StickyWicket, I think it should be fine; I've certainly had GAs promoted dependent on fewer sources. I'd just make sure you have an answer as to why britishmilitaryhistory.co.uk is reliable (I am not familiar with it myself) - Dumelow (talk) 12:50, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply! Hmm you make a good point, I hadn't thought about that with regards to britishmilitaryhistory.co.uk. I will have to do some digging on the source I think. StickyWicket (talk) 07:45, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I am aware that you have created more than 700 DYK. In my opinion, a problem arose from this one because it crossed a line from history to medicine. I recommended that the DYK for Bald's eyesalve be rejected and that the article itself be radically revised, because none of the evidence of function meets WP:MEDRS. In my opinon, an article can exist with references to the history of this medevial treatment, but any mention of science supporting functionality be deleted. See page 218 of Whitcher et al (click on PDF after accessing the ref) for present day example of how use of 'traditional medicine' eye treatment products can cause eye damage, up to blindness.[1]

Given that you helped with the work at Wikipedia:Featured article review/Battle of Blenheim/archive1, would you be willing to take a look at Schellenberg, which was in the same war? It's another very old FA promotion that the URFA group isn't quite sure what to do with, and is looking for someone who is at least familiar with the topic matter to judge what kind of shape it is in. The hope is to avoid FAR if at all possible. Hog Farm Talk 17:12, 2 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Possible help for a new Wikipedia editor

[edit]

Hello! I am currently new to Wikipedia editing, having taken up a university course where we are encouraged to work on a stub article and turn it into a B- or C-class article. I have noticed that you are relatively active on here, and are an admin for the Biography WikiProject with a particular focus on civil engineers. I have chosen Peter Nicol Russell who was a Scottish/Australian engineer and philanthropist in the 1800's. If you had the chance, would you mind assisting me with providing some advice on the article via its talk page? I'm also looking for someone to review and grade the article per the Biography WikiProject guidelines if you (/you know anyone who) can help Many thanks!! Hi, idle curiosity here, but what stopped your progress on List of British generals killed during the First World War? Good to see you back in action, too! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:49, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pickersgill-Cunliffe, thanks, good to be back! I stopped partly because of my usual lack of focus but also I had a concern over suitability (perhaps this listing was best served by the existing category system). At the time I started it there were no others of similar scope, but now I see we have List of U.S. general officers and flag officers killed in World War II and List of Russian generals killed during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine that have survived so perhaps time to reinvigorate efforts to get this to mainspace. I initially sourced the list entirely from Red Tabs but some kind editors made me aware of a couple of others not listed there; they need to be integrated into the list. There may be others, at some point I will try searching on the CWGC site to check. More than happy to work together on this one, if you are willing? - Dumelow (talk) 11:32, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I admit that I'm not the best at identifying notability for list articles, but I assume having one complete book on the subject plus various wider works discussing general officer deaths (on the topic of lions led by donkeys etc) makes this one a good possibility. Note that I created list of British general officers killed in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the sources of which run on a similar basis. Would be happy to assist, depending of course on whether or not you agree! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 14:39, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think I've come round to the same opinion (just realised I started my list in 2014, what an age ago that feels!). I'm away from my copy of Red Tabs but I'm sure one of the main thrusts is of dispelling the myth of the chateau general, which would make some good material for the introductory paragraphs. Excellent work on the Napoleonic list, by the way. Will look to start checking the list against the CWGC but feel free to add whatever you like, especially on the background, I don't think I have much in the way of sources to hand - Dumelow (talk) 16:39, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Will take a more in-depth look into what can be written shortly - as of right now my FWW knowledge is almost completely limited to what I learned while writing Roland Haig! A brief check seems to suggest that an overwhelming amount of recent work relies on that from Red Tabs. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 21:11, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya! You were a big help digging up a paper for the Old Exe Bridge a few years ago. I was wondering if you might be able to lay your hands on these two: "Birmingham Canal, England—a future unlocked by Telford" and "Thomas Telford's cast-iron bridges"? I'd be very much obliged! Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:03, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi HJ. Just started working on a bridge article myself (Dove Bridge just off the A50 between Stoke and Uttoxeter). I can send these, but are you in WP:Library? The ICE has tied up with them to grant access to the online library. I can actually get access to more articles through my WP:Library membership than my ICE membership! There's a paragraph on the bridge in "6. West Midlands and South Staffordshire". Civil Engineering Heritage Wales and West Central England.: 189–226. January 1986. doi:10.1680/cehwawce.25769.0006. also, but what it has to say might be covered by the other two - Dumelow (talk) 12:22, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wow! I knew there was some good stuff in the Wikipedia Library but didn't realise it included the ICE Library! I can see myself spending many hours mining that for information on bridges! I actually have that book in front of me. I have the entire CEH series on my bookshelf; they're handy gazetteers for major engineering works (and a few obscure ones) even if they're not very detailed. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:42, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And if you haven't discovered it yet, I'm in love with David McFetrich's Encyclopaedia of British Bridges; I've cited it in a few Wikipedia articles. I'm not sure I like the way it's organised (alphabetically by bridge name rather than geographically like the CEH series) but it has thousands of entries on all sorts of bridges (but apparently not yours; Brindley's aqueduct over over the same river is included though). HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:02, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Dove aqueduct
Not familiar with it, but will look for a copy, thanks for the recommendation. Brindley's Dove aqueduct is just downstream from the mediaeval Monks Bridge, River Dove, the article for which I wrote a couple of years ago, and very deserving of its own article. It has unusually low and shallow arches - Dumelow (talk) 13:12, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Monks Bridge is in there, though only four sentences. It's around £30 on Amazon if I remember rightly but well worth it. I might get round to the Dove Aqueduct at some point. Let's see where I get to with the Galton Bridge first! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:55, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, just ordered a copy (it's sitting at £19 now). Sure it'll come in useful for other articles as well, if only I had time to write them! - Dumelow (talk) 09:42, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, hope McFetrich is proving useful. If you have five minutes to cast an eye over the revamped Galton Bridge, I'd appreciate an expert's perspective! :) I'm quite pleased with it considering what it looked like a month ago! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:51, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi HJ, looking good, especially starting almost from scratch. In my paperback of Man of Iron Galton bridge is discussed on p335, while you have it as p355. Possibly a typo? I could find absolutely no other improvements or changes to make to the article, which I think is certainly above GA in quality. Great work! - Dumelow (talk) 07:26, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good catch, thanks! It's a shame it only gets a brief mention but I suppose Telford was so prolific that a book covering all his projects in detail would be enormous! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:59, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

John Giffard

[edit]

I found this URL which said that John Giffard is adopted. Can you check the original source? GZWDer (talk) 14:51, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, good find GZWDer. It didn't come up in my search of the 'Times back archive as the announcement didn't have his full name just "John William" son of "Mr and Mrs Peter Giffard". The Christening was at Brompton for some reason but its presumably the same man as the date is right. One of his god parents was Airey Neave, interestingly enough. Another was "Miss Gandar Dower", presumably some relation of Eric Gandar Dower. Will add to the article - Dumelow (talk) 15:51, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

British generals

[edit]

Hi, I'm currently having a look to see if I can add any more images to the list. I note that per this, Randle Barnett Barker should have a usable image in vol. 10 of The War Illustrated, but I can't seem to find an open copy of anything above vol. 9. Any ideas? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 11:44, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Scratch that. As these things go, as soon as sending that message I've found it..! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 11:55, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Pickersgill-Cunliffe, was just about to reply to say whoever uploaded it to the IWM got the volume wrong (it's page 208 of Volume 7, but sounds like you found it anyway) - Dumelow (talk) 11:57, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Coincidentally I was thinking about digging out Red Tabs and getting to work on the text of the list article. Potentially as something for DYK on 11 November or Remembrance Sunday (I've just submitted an article for a war memorial and am working on a French general that I might also ask to run on those days) - Dumelow (talk) 12:00, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. I also thought they'd gotten the volume wrong, but it turns out that they used this, the reprinted "deluxe" version, which has completely different volumes! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 12:03, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The War Illustrated lists Brigadier-General Francis John De Gex here. He doesn't seem to be included in Bloody Red Tabs, and a little googling suggests he may have died of illness or wounds while serving as Commandant, Rouen. Also Major-General Richard Hutton Davies who committed suicide, listed here. Not sure what your inclusion requirements are? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 17:08, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there are others who died during the war and are listed by the CWGC. I think I will include them in the list (and change it to "list of British generals who died during the First World War") for completeness. Will take a bit of work though - Dumelow (talk) 18:36, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Right. Have finally reached a lull in other projects and will have a go filling in some myself, if you don't mind. Do you have any thoughts on how the list is organised? It loads in in no seemingly logical order, and I note that other similar lists provide separate tables for each rank of man killed. Also possible to organise by year. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:42, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No real preference, though I suppose by rank perhaps. This search at the CWGC should give you all the generals they consider to have died during the war (and includes ones not listed by Davis, which I think are generally non-battle related deaths), though it also picks up men who served as "general servants" which you'll have to disregard! - Dumelow (talk) 18:48, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Have created an initial list of the lieutenant-generals for your edification. Think changing "died of wounds" to "wounds received" works better, considering the header is already "cause of death". Also, I see your note about Henry Normand MacLaurin, but don't think he ever served in the British Army? Others that I don't think ever served in the British Army such as William Holmes are already listed. Am I missing something, or is this list a little more international than promised? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 20:43, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, have been away for a few days. I like your list of lt-gens, agree with the cause of death changes. Hopefully I'll get time tonight to finish the text from Red Tabs and add page numbers to the list refs - Dumelow (talk) 11:17, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what to about the nationality issue. I am leaning towards extending the scope to all British Empire generals, as that seems to be the definition used by Davis and Maddocks and the CWGC. What do you think? - Dumelow (talk) 11:19, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If Red Tabs includes all British-esqe generals in their list, then this one should do the same. If they do, then that means there's little difficulty with the other CWGC casualties; we just add all of them! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:51, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've started adding the CWGC generals, there's a lot as it includes those died of accident/illness on active service not related to active duty including those who died post-war. It might be worth introducing a colouring or something to indicate those listed in Red Tabs as died directly related to the war. I hummed and harred a bit on whether to add the Surgeons-General listed on the CWGC, I've included them for now as the ones I checked seemed to hold general officer ranks in the various medical corps (I didn't include the navy surgeons-general) - Dumelow (talk) 18:54, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Assume you're not including the post-war ones? The end of the war would be a useful solid boundary. I agree that a colour might be useful (perhaps a shade over the name, similar to Order of battle at the Battle of the Nile?) in differentiating between those who died any which way and those who were killed as a result of action. I'll try and get some of the CWGC ones you're adding into tables soon. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 20:31, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've split them into a section for now. I like the shading on the Nile article, though I think per Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Accessibility it'd need a symbol (such as †) as well - Dumelow (talk) 21:05, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rather than going into detail "heart attack", "meningitis" etc. I was thinking just to go with "illness", we can then have a limited number of causes of death to keep it simple, perhaps: "killed in action", "wounds received", "drowned", "illness", "accident"? - Dumelow (talk) 13:02, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agree with keeping it simple. Perhaps brackets afterwards if a specific case needs further explanation. E.g. I think the Edgar William Cox drowning has also been viewed as a suicide. Also, would not Kitchener's death count as "killed in action"? It's not like it was accidental drowning, he was sailing on a warship in a time of war. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 20:05, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps even simpler. Omit the drowning category and class those by enemy action as killed in action and the others as "accident". Agree on Cox, unusual case that deserves a little further explanation - Dumelow (talk) 20:19, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Generals

[edit]

You archived the thread mid-way through me adding to it!
Have continued organising the tables; started shortening long names (mostly removing middle names) to increase readability. A couple of queries you might be able to help with though:

  • Hoghton is down as "poisoned", do we have any context for this? I'm not sure what to put him down as
  • Are you aware of any good sources for brigade names? We seem to be moving between "[Number] (Infantry) Brigade" and "[Number] Brigade" for infantry brigades, and I'm not sure if one is more accurate than the other or if something else is at play with the names

Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:45, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hoghton's covered in Red Tabs, he was one of many died after eating herbs gathered during the Siege of Kut to relieve their hunger. Perhaps "accident"? Sorry, not done much on the generals recently, but will try to dive back in. Don't really know much about the brigade names, I'll probably have used whatever was stated in Red Tabs. Going by the precedent of British infantry brigades of the First World War we can probably do away with "(Infantry)"- Dumelow (talk) 19:10, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Will edit names as suggested. Thoughts on adding a column for branch, as I did here? I'm trying to name the units as accurately as possible, e.g. "1st Division" rather than "1st Australian Division", and it might be a useful way to make the officer's nationality/situation clear. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 19:18, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing, looks like it'll solve that issue - Dumelow (talk) 20:31, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Have almost finished turning the entries into list format, left blank spaces where I'm unsure or the source doesn't say. If you'd like to help fill some of those in..! Also, been seeing what kind of non-table images could be used and have added two CWGC graves. Images such as this, this, and this also exist; what do you think? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 00:00, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Looking good. I've filled what gaps I can down to (and including) the major-generals and found a few more portraits. Will keep plugging away. I like the funeral photos, really interesting to see the cemeteries in war time - Dumelow (talk) 13:40, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Couple of queries here:
Thanks again for the work you're putting in here, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:04, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding WP:ERRORS reports...

[edit]

Hey, I just noticed that you are actually an admin. You know, you're allowed to make corrections all by yourself. The errors page is to get the attention of an admin to fix an error because one cannot oneself. Since you can yourself, you don't need to get another admin to do it. --Jayron32 17:24, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jayron32. I do make changes, usually to delete from the templates uncited stuff currently on the main page, but prefer to at least get a second opinion and give people chance to fix or replace the article. I do also fix articles by rescuing dead links, adding references etc. where it is relatively easy to do so. However there is a limited amount of time I can dedicate to this and my primary focus is content creation. I only recently started looking at the main page content when I realised how much of it wasn't within guidelines, particularly POTD, OTD and FL. Compliance with WP:V is a major problem - if readers can't trust information we have actually selected to feature on the main page then it is a poor advert for the rest of the project. Thankyou for all you do to action the reports, I know it is an unending task (but it shouldn't be if whoever writes the info actually checks it) - Dumelow (talk) 17:53, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, and there's a very useful additional benefit that it's clear to all quite how many errors there are in the templates every day, and a faint hope that those preparing the various sections might take note and check things more thoroughly themselves going forward. If Dumelow wasn't doing this task (which The Rambling Man also used to do on a daily basis), there would be numerous errors going live every day and nobody would even know about it.  — Amakuru (talk) 16:08, 14 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
My only point was that Dumelow could spend the same effort and just fix the template directly. Fixing errors never requires prior approval, and as he has the requisite user permissions to edit through full protection, it has the same effect as asking other admins to do it for him, with the added benefit of getting done sooner. Reports from non-admins, as TRM used to do on the regular, are of course much appreciated. But if someone is already an admin themselves, there's no benefit (and indeed the drawback of making someone else do the work, and the lost time of it not getting done promptly) of reporting rather than just fixing it. That was my main point. --Jayron32 13:25, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In thanks for your hard work...

Hannyngton

[edit]

Have some difficulties re Hannyngton. His command seems to have changed through the East African campaign, from variously numbered East African brigades to the eponymous Hanforce. Also, some sources describe him as a temporary brig-gen, but this medal card apparently has him as a major-gen. Thoughts? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:43, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I can't seem to get any link to that page to actually work once pasted here, which is a bit weird. The record number is WO 372/9/1308 if you want to look. Having checked the record, it definitely does say "Indian Army. Maj Gen". Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 17:22, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think you had an extraneous "|" in the link, this link works (for me at least). Very strange, the medal card preview certainly has "Indian Army Maj Gen" written on it. There's a second medal card for him here that also says "Maj Gen (T)", presumably indicating it was a temporary rank. Will see if I can dig anything out from elsewhere - Dumelow (talk) 17:40, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, was a temporary rank from 20 January to 25 February 1917 only per the Gazette, guess its recorded on his medal card as it states "highest rank held" - Dumelow (talk) 17:54, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
His command of 3rd East African Brigade definitely followed command of the 2nd (page 231). Hanforce looks to have come later (from what I can tell from [http://ww1lit.nsms.ox.ac.uk/ww1lit/exhibits/show/helenthomas-u4igjb/13 this book) so should probably be his last command - Dumelow (talk) 18:13, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. Not sure I've got a good enough source to say what, if anything, he was commanding at the time of his death though. On a different note, any ideas why Deputy Surgeon General (which I'm equating to maj gen) John Henderson is on the CWGC? Per this obituary he retired in 1888! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 19:14, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pickersgill-Cunliffe, thanks for your recent additions. I think it's now as complete as we can make it. I'll look to move it to main space shortly, unless you have any objections? - Dumelow (talk) 09:43, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I expect further research could provide more information for the background writing, but it's perfectly good as is. We'd briefly discussed adding colour coding to the article (at least to denote those officers present in Red Tabs), thoughts on that as a cherry on top? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 11:46, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think that would be useful. Will keep my eye out for more background sources, I'm a little uncomfortable with it being etirely sourced to Red Tabs, although it is the definitive work - Dumelow (talk) 11:53, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Marescaux

[edit]

Marescaux is an interesting story, is it not? Query here. Per this he died of cerebral hemorrhage brought about by the constant bombing of Dunkirk while he was Colonel COmmandant, Dunkirk. Does this count as illness or wounds received? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 15:22, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, was thinking he would be an interesting subject for an article! I'd go with wounds received for that, I think - Dumelow (talk) 15:27, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Have added as such. Agree that he needs an article, would be happy to pitch in although my FWW experience is pretty thin! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 17:02, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Have made a start on an article for him here. A distressing amount of Navy List being used so far; if you happen to come across any accounts of particular stories from his service they'd be great to include. It's mostly plain facts right now, although I've more to add. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 15:01, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff, I've added a bit more. Think that's all I can add. Probably wants a bit of tidying up and breaking into more sections but other than that probably good to go! - Dumelow (talk) 18:24, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for your additions, have created the article. One bit of information that eludes me is his first command as a commander. OR shows that it was HMS Gleaner between 1896 and 1897, but I can't find an RS to back me up! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 21:00, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Strange, the Times of 14 December 1896 has him as a lt-cmdr and captaining HMS Hussar (1894) on trials? - Dumelow (talk) 22:08, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The same paper of 22 Feb 1897 has him captaining the Hussar in the Mediterranean. Possibly your source is mistaken? - Dumelow (talk) 22:10, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, just saw that one. The Times of 19 November however has the following:
"Gerald C. A. Marascaux, to the Gleaner, in command when relieved by the Hussar, Cuthbert G. Chapman, to the Hussar, in command when relieved by the Gleaner"
Definitely a connection between the two ships but honestly that sentence has done more to confuse me than anything else! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 22:16, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I think I understand. Marescaux took the Hussar out to the Med, where she was taken over by Chapman and Marecaux brought the Gleaner back? - Dumelow (talk) 22:18, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. Threw a bunch of Times reports together to piece it out. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 22:40, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Realised that IWM holds an image of Marescaux here. I'm aware that lots of IWM images are usable on commons/wikipedia, but have never done it myself. Any idea whether this can be used? (there's a whole series of portraits of him on the NPG, but we've got to wait another 6 years to use those!) Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 15:57, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It'd be PD if it was taken by a British government photographer but the back indicates that it was purchased from the studio of Elliott & Fry. It doesn't give the name of the photographer but it is potentially still in copyright. It's part of the "Bond of Sacrifice" collection which was made with a view to publishing short biographies of all officers killed in the war. Because of the number killed they didn't get beyond the first two volumes (1914 and Jan-Jun 1915) but by virtue of date of publication they are now fair game and a handy source of info and photos of those killed in the early war (I have both volumes on my bookshelf) - Dumelow (talk) 16:18, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah well, only six years to go then..! Out of interest, does Bond of Sacrifice have a piece/image on Gordon Chesney Wilson? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 16:46, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly, the text is as follows:

Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Chesney Wilson, MVO, Commanding the Royal Horse Guards, who was killed in action on the 6th November, 1914, was the eldest son of Sir Samuel Wilson, M.P., and was born on the 3rd August, 1865. He joined the Royal Horse Guards from the Militia in May, 1887, becoming Lieutenant in De- comber, 1888, and Captain in November, 1894. He took part in the South African War, during which he was on the Staff as A.D.C. to Major-General Baden-Powell, Commanding the Mafeking Frontier Forces from August, 1899, to May, 1900, and A.D.C. to the same officer after appointment as Major-General, South Africa, from May to July, 1900. He was present at the defence of Mafeking, including actions of the 26th December, 1899, and 12th May, 1900. He was twice mentioned in Despatches ("London Gazette," 8th February and 10th September, 1901), and received the Queen's medal with three clasps. He was promoted Major in January, 1908: Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in October, 1907: and succeeded to the command of his regiment as Lieutenant-Colonel in October, 1911. Lieutenant-Colonel Wilson married, in 1891, Lady Sarah Isabella Augusta, sixth daughter of the seventh Duke of Marlborough, and left no issue.

Citation would be Clutterbuck, L. A.; Dooner, W.T.; Denison, C.A. (1917). The Bond of Sacrifice. London: Cranford Press. pp. 448–449.. The image isn't great but I've uploaded it - Dumelow (talk) 17:52, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The bios aren't usually very in depth but more than happy to supply any others if there's ones you're interested in (or you come across articles without images) - Dumelow (talk) 17:53, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for that, that's the first definitive date I've seen for his taking command of the regiment. Big help! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:39, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
