A barnstar for you!
[edit]The Admin's Barnstar | ||
For taking care of the seemingly endless LTA nonsense at WP:Articles for deletion/Wreckage (Pearl Jam song). You don't know just how much I appreciate it. JeffSpaceman (talk) 11:09, 15 September 2024 (UTC) |
- Actually, I do want to ask something -- I raised this matter at User talk:Redrose64, but I think it's worth discussing here -- should we really be tagging socks in this case? This is clearly LTA trolling territory, and I don't believe the sockpuppets should be tagged per WP:DENY, but given that I am not an administrator, I do want to ask someone who is. What say you? JeffSpaceman (talk) 11:10, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'm in favour of tagging just because it's so easy to lose track of what user we're looking at. I try to ensure that any uninvolved admin can look at that and understand which sockmaster I'm referring to for the block. I would reconsider if this continues much longer. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 11:18, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, OK. I appreciate the insight. I personally believe that admin impersonation is where we start to get into LTA/DENY territory, but that's just one (non-admin) user's opinion. I definitely understand where you're coming from as someone who wants to make sure uninvolved admins are aware of the situation -- I certainly agree that the tagging could probably come to an end if this continues frequently enough. Either way, thank you for the response, I'm happy to hear your perspective on this as an administrator. JeffSpaceman (talk) 11:29, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from SharkJumperNYC (19:38, 15 September 2024)
[edit]Thanks! Question, why is my username red? Is it just because there's no content on my page?
Also, I know Wikipedia has like a gazillion editing policies that can resolve pretty much any dilemma, but I don't really know how to search them super-well. Do you have any advice on how to search them, or can you point me to anywhere that explains how they're structured? --SharkJumperNYC (talk) 19:38, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hi SharkJumperNYC! Yes, your username is red because there is no content here in your userpage. It will turn blue when you have added something to it. This page provides an overview list of the Wikipedia policies and guidelines. There's a lot there and I in no way recommend you attempt to learn or read all of them immediately. There's a simplified ruleset to get you started here. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 19:47, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

Robert Gambier Middleton
[edit]I realise that I have more work to do on this topic - but the original version has been deleted from my sandbox. Can I have it back please? TriodeFollower (talk) 15:04, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- @TriodeFollower: Considering almost 90% of the article was a copyright violation of this page I don't think you need to do more than go back to that to see the content. Thank you for looking to create the article, Middleton is a notable individual, but please make sure any future writing is devoid of copyright violations. I note as well that morethannelson.com is an uncited amateur work; while its content is overwhelmingly correct it is not a reliable source and you should not use it as a direct source. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 17:08, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- The task of setting up links and references on Wikipedia is laborious and I would like to save myself the effort of doing so again. If you give me my original back, I can use the references and would commit to totally reworking the material in the spirit of what you have correctly pointed out. TriodeFollower (talk) 11:39, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
- If you find references and links difficult you might want to look at using VisualEditor if you haven't already. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:42, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
- I have now completely re-worked my entry on Robert Gambier Middleton but have left it in my sandbox for now. I think I have made up for past errors by doing as thorough a job as possible, given the limited number of reasonably reliable sources available. I would be grateful if you would have a look at it as I want to get it right this time! TriodeFollower (talk) 18:50, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- @TriodeFollower: Hi, thank you for giving it another go! If you'd like I'm happy to take a look over the next few days and spruce it up with my sources. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 19:07, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your offer of help. I cannot claim to be an expert - I just felt that this person who lived locally deserved to be remembered - so I would be happy for any improvements you can make. TriodeFollower (talk) 22:30, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- It was a mistake on my part to have submitted the original entry without further work, but I would like to submit the replacement before too long. Would you be happy for me to submit the version in my sandbox 'as is'? You could then update it in the usual way. TriodeFollower (talk) 15:38, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- @TriodeFollower: I think you should look to add citations to the paragraphs that are missing them (there are 3 examples), but you have a much better base for an article now. If you can you should also find a secondary source to replace the FamilySearch citation, as this would be deemed original research. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 14:03, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. How can I protect American game show winnings records from being edited? --Game$howFan (talk) 09:37, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- You cannot and you should not. You do not own any article and cannot control the content of it. If an article is being vandalised you can revert the edits. If you just don't agree with edits being made, discuss it on the article talk page and come to a consensus. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 10:53, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. While "Krimi991" is indeed trying to look like me, the issue is not just the username but also their trolling comments on several talk pages, including mine where they accuse me of "stealing" their account [1]. Ktrimi991 (talk) 20:00, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- Is there any background to this that you aware of? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 20:01, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- No, I was quite surprised when I saw the message on my tp. I doubt I have interacted with the person behind that account before. While the possibility that the "Krimi991" account is a sock created to troll remains, I can't link it with a particular former editor or person. Ktrimi991 (talk) 20:09, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- So my point is that IMO they should not be unblocked if they just change their username. Ktrimi991 (talk) 20:13, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from HistoryMingo (07:07, 6 October 2024)
[edit]Hello Juxlos, I'm hoping to make a correction to one of my "edit summary field" notes but when I've experimented with trying to create a "dummy edit" I'm reading that making edits on a previous revision of a page will undo all proceeding edits leading up to the latest revision. I feel I may be doing something wrong or not fully understanding the process. A step-by-step walk through would be very helpful as I've already consulted the guides and researched YouTube videos and still haven't found the answer I'm searching for. I appreciate you! Regards, HistoryMingo (talk) 07:07, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
- It sounds like you're going to the version of the page from your last edit to it, and trying to add an edit from there. As there have been other edits to page since your edit, you trying to add a new edit from that point will revert those subsequent edits. To add a dummy edit do so from the newest version of the article. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 12:10, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

Dna of Pelasgians (map)
[edit]Hi there. Did you restore the map? I can't understand what changes have you made. This map is a fake propaganda based on modern albanian nationalism and its extremely dangerous and hurtful such things to be allowed to be published here. This map should be deleted at once. VanMars (talk) 11:49, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- I removed the CSD tag because it did not fit any of the criteria. If you want to discuss the authenticity of the image you can do so on the talk page and/or with the uploading editor. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:58, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- The uploading editor is the one who created this image, and he created for a specific purpose..no matter what I'm gonna say to him, no matter if I tried to ask to show me any such genetic research (which doesn't exist) he will stick on his thesis...So I'm wondering what we do here? We appease pseudo-history? This picture should be deleted at once, there's no alternative. VanMars (talk) 15:03, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- The image is used on zero Wikipedia pages. You clearly have strong opinions about the content provided in it. If you can prove this is false, and thus a hoax, let me know. Your disagreement with it is not in itself a reason for deletion. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 15:22, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- I don't have strong opinions, I do have basic knowledge of history, genetic studies and of modern balkan pseudo-historical narratives. Of course I can prove you that this map is a hoax! Follow up please:
- 1) Pelasgians were a group of people that classical era Greeks described as being the older natives of the lands around the Aegean Sea...they were living in different parts in mainland Greece, the Aegean islands, Crete, Thrace and even the western coast of Anatolia...they never mentioned any Pelasgians living in the area known as Illyria (as this map suggests).
- 2) Ancient Greeks as linguistic group emerged from the Bronze Age migrations of indoeuropean speakers into the Balkans. These Greek speaking populations mixed with the locals. Thus, if "Greeks" should be examined genetically from the Bronze Age onwards, the so called "Pelasgians" are all people living in Greece from Bronze Age and before...so, the Neolithic populations of Greece!
- Here is genetic research about the Neolithic populations in Greece, Balkans, Anatolia etc
- No such connection or specific similarity btw Neolithic people living in Greece and the aforementioned areas as depicted in the map or with Albanians specifically!
- 3) There's no such thing as "pelasgian" graves, tombs, settlements in actual archaeology. The specific group of people if existed, it was just people non speaking Greek but live among the lands of the Greeks...they could be thracians, cretans still retain their pre greek language, remnants of non greek neolithic groups in greece etc...noone in archaeology can find any grave and say "this is pelasgian"... thus, no such genetic study can ever conducted under such term....!!! Because there's no such thing as "pelasgian" bones or tombs! So again if we are talking about Neolithic people of Greece, all official genetic studies shows not such special connection with Albanians, to stand them out from the rest of the balkans and anatolia...
- 4) Official studies about the genetic makeup of Mycenaens and Minoans, thus Bronze Age known populations and civilizations of Greece. By an overwhelming 70% both these people found to be genetically similar and both traced their genetic origin from Neolithic Anatolian populations...the only slight difference is the Mycenaens as the carriers of the greek language who migrated from northern regions long ago, contained a genetic genome from northern european regions and groups. Mycenaen Greeks were thus mixed population with the natives of Greece...still no such link between these genetics and with the area shown in the map.
- 5) Modern Albanian Nationalism:
- I provide here what Wikipedia says, the same encyclopedia we now argue in it...
- "Rejected by modern scholarship, during the late 1990s and early 2000s the Pelasgian theory has been revived through a series of translated foreign books published on Albania and other related topics and plays an important role in Albanian nationalism today.[286][287] Among them are authors Robert D'Angély, Edwin Everett Jacques, Mathieu Aref and Aristeidis Kollias, whose works have revitalised 19th century ideas about Albanian descent from ancient Pelasgians (shared with the Greeks) and being a European "white race" originating from them alongside many Greek words having an Albanian etymology.[286] In Albania the Pelasgian theory has been used by Albanians in Albania and Albanian immigrants in Greece as a tool to rehabilitate themselves as an ancient and autochthonous population in the Balkans to "prove" the precedence of Albanians over Greeks.[286] The revival of the alternative Pelasgian theory has occurred within the context of post-communist Greek-Albanian relations to generate cultural hegemony and historical precedence over the Greeks and sometimes toward other (historical) European cultures by Albanians.[288][284] Albanian schoolbooks, mainly in relation to language, have also asserted at times that the Illyrians are the heirs of the Pelasgians.[289][290]"
- The aforementioned map which you (for some reason) try to keep it online, is EXACTLY the areas which modern Albanians either claim as "ethnic albania" based on medieval and modern migrations and settlements, areas that some ancient Illyrian tribes used to live such as Messapians in Italy or wider Illyrian existence in the western balkans. The lands that the map have in Greece are the lands of Epirus which albanian nationalists claim and shows also the areas in southern Greece that medieval albanian migrants settled and thus used also as claim by modern albanian nationalists. Weird if its a coincidence, isn't it??
- The article in Wikipedia about Albanian Nationalim provides all info for anyone to understand EXACTLY what this map tries to project.
- 6) Conclusion: all REAL genetic studies shows no such connection as the map suggests.
- There's no such thing as pelasgian human genetic traces to obtain any genetic material to even make a study. Neolithic populations of Greece have no such similarity to albanians or to the areas the map depicts.
- Albanian nationalism and irredentisms is the tool behind the inspiration of the map.
- So tell me, have you asked the guy that uploaded that map the official genetic study which based his map? Does that study (if exist) speaks about Pelasgians? Have you?
- I expect the map to be deleted at once...I have screenshoted this conversation and I will make it public in the media if you continue to question my arguments and real factual history...I hope you understand how serious is all that, right?
- My regards, I hope you will act as its should. 2A02:1388:415B:131C:BAA6:D4A4:AFA4:F07D (talk) 21:17, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- Please add your argument to the talk page of the file, and/or take this to a relevant WikiProject. I will not continue to engage with you based on your threat to somehow report me to the media if I don't agree with you. - I literally just provide you all proofs necessary to delete this picture...yet you continue to make new arguments about not doing so. In the beginning you said you need proofs...now you say its my threats. Just how I imagine it...You, no matter what I was going to show you, would you keep that fake dangerous map online. This is on purpose..
- I honestly have no words for you directly spreading such dangerous ideologies in the public! What a time! This is whY Nazis used to do my friend. Have a little touch with reality and of your actions. Take that picture down. VanMars (talk) 22:50, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- Please add your argument to the talk page of the file, and/or take this to a relevant WikiProject. I will not continue to engage with you based on your threat to somehow report me to the media if I don't agree with you. Wikipedia is a collaborative environment and I've no interest in working with you based on that remark. Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 22:41, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
Question from Luka-Kalandadze2005 (12:22, 27 October 2024)
[edit]So like i have a question, if we search really hard and there is not information about given topic that we have to expand, do we remove the mark form it? --Luka-Kalandadze2005 (talk) 12:22, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
- If you believe a tag to be inappropriate you can always remove it; be prepared to justify why and if there is further disagreement discuss it on the article talk page. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:59, 27 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Miltos.Grammatikakis (09:57, 2 November 2024)
[edit]Hello, I would like to know whether it is possible to highlight certain parts of some Wikipedia pages and make optional some other parts. I am thinking of experimenting with a local copy, and I don't know if sandbox could help in some way, i.e., to prepare the local copy as needed. It may be too much to use the sandbox for this job? Thanks. --Miltos.Grammatikakis (talk) 09:57, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Miltos.Grammatikakis: Hi, Wikipedia looks to actually avoid hiding content whenever and wherever possible. Articles don't have what you might describe as highlights, although the lede at the start acts as a summary of the most important parts. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:36, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
Hello! I came across a passage in the HMS Stag (1812) article that goes: "In April, together with her sister ship HMS Semiramis, also serving on the Cape of Good Hope Station, Stag was assigned to join HMS Clorinde's homeward convoy from Point-de-Galle, which sailed from Table Bay on 2 May for St Helena from whence Stag was expected to escort the convoy back to England." I found the wording a bit complex and wanted to ask if you could help clarify the meaning here. I’d really appreciate any insights! Thanks a lot, and I hope you’re having a great day. P. ĐĂNG (talk) 03:27, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- @P. ĐĂNG: I agree it's a little long and complex. I've rejigged the article a little, see what you think of it now. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 18:33, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your help! I think this article is really interesting, and I’ve translated it into Vietnamese. P. ĐĂNG (talk) 10:06, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- Nice! Thanks for that. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 10:37, 10 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Smithdavid65165 (22:26, 5 November 2024)
[edit]Hello I'm trying to do some family searches and I'm new on here not sure what to do can you help me please --Smithdavid65165 (talk) 22:26, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- This isn't the most appropriate website for family history research. If you're looking for that I suggest going to something like Ancestry. It will have far more information on people relevant to you. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 10:19, 6 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Subinsbdi7 (12:50, 9 November 2024)
[edit]Hello, Greetings. There are many things that i want to edit but i there arent any references those are just records. how to make those edits more legit? --Subinsbdi7 (talk) 12:50, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, any addition to Wikipedia needs to be backed by a reliable source; this usually means a published secondary source. It is very unlikely that any content added from records will be kept, as this would not demonstrate the required notability. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:00, 9 November 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Starting to feel like my user talk page is a honey-pot for sockpuppets of that guy. Thanks for cleaning it up. Should I get temporary talk page protection? — rsjaffe 🗣️ 21:27, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- Can always protect your talk; I tend not to protect the talks of other admins in the knowledge that they can do it themselves if they feel it necessary! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 21:29, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- Nice of them to help burn a bunch of open proxies:) DMacks (talk) 21:55, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- I didn't know whether it was ok to protect your own page or whether you should ask. I'll just quick-protect next time. But, it indeed was a good way to find some proxies to burn. — rsjaffe 🗣️ 00:37, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

Hi I am working on this draft of a podcast:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Sherlock_%26_Co.(podcast) I got one reliable source, but how is this then used to improve the credibility of the podcast? and how do I get the poster/logo of the podcast without © issues as Wikimedia doesn't have a fair use option Context --Arc1210 (talk) 05:51, 15 November 2024 (UTC)

Would you be willing to use your admin vision to see when this page was created? I had estimated when I listed this for AFD that it would be the 7th longest-lived hoax on Wikipedia, so I was intending to add this to WP:HOAXLIST. Hog Farm Talk 23:35, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

Question from Azurlified on List of ambassadors to Slovakia (12:35, 21 November 2024)
[edit]I am updating the page for the list of ambassadors to Slovakia and I noticed that many of these people don't have their own pages (understandably). Would it be consequential to just start looking into these people and make them their own pages or is there a certain point where it's just not worth it? --Azurlified (talk) 12:35, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
