  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.

  • Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.

[edit]

Hi Magedsaleh392. I see that you have been translating many articles from Arabic. I think it would be best if you stopped adding categories for now. Most of your additions of categories using HotCat are wrong or too vague and they have to be corrected by other editors. For instance, you recently added Category:Berber Algerians and Category:Animals to the Lake Akfadou article. Both of these were incorrect usages. Your many additions of vague categories such as Category:History and Category:Geography to articles are also not helpful. I recommend that you simply tag articles as {{Uncategorized}} or {{Improve categories}} and allow other more knowledgable editors to do the categorization for now. Thank you, gobonobo + c 03:33, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hi Magedsaleh392! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Thank you. C F A 💬 19:36, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Al-Maamora Forest

[edit]

Thank you for your efforts at creating articles such as Al-Maamora Forest. To me, the writing seems overelaborate. My concern is that such writing might make people think it was AI generated, which of course would be very bad. Going forward, it would be advisable to take a bit more time and edit out some of the "fancier" wording so that people won't suspect you of using AI tools. @Asilvering Yes I'm the translator, but where is the conflict of interest that are you referring to? plus the article is supported with sources, and it is not promotional it explains the project and the city by the sources as many other articles in wikipedia, so at that point please provide a specific issues you see on the article so it can be fixed. Thank you Magedsaleh392 (talk) 12:59, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I really disagree that it is not promotional. It could theoretically be fixed - I don't think it's so bad it's speedy deletion territory - but in my opinion it's not really worth anyone's time to launder someone else's COI. The COI I'm referring to is the author of the original article, who I would presume has some relationship to the development. -- asilvering (talk) 17:03, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Asilvering I don't know if the original author has a relationship or COI or not and I'm not going to speculate, I already adjusted the article but I'm not sure you have checked it. Magedsaleh392 (talk) 18:17, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AfC notification: Draft:Al-Hammad Desert has a new comment

[edit]
I've left a comment on your Articles for Creation submission, which can be viewed at Draft:Al-Hammad Desert. Thanks! – Joe (talk) 09:13, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok so let's clear this out, so Al-Hammad Desert goes from northern Saudi Arabia through Jordan's Mafraq governorate into Syria and Iraq. Badiyat al-Sham is the one in the levant, (Sham means levant in arabic). As for Harrat al-Sham, is a rocky formation and it is not a desert. so actually each one of those is a different thing. Thank you.@Joe Roe Magedsaleh392 (talk) 18:27, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My Arabic is admittedly very poor but I have worked in the region we're talking about for a decade and talked extensively to people who live there about its geography. I've never heard anyone refer to the harrat al-Shams/al-Harra (which is indeed a desert) as part of the hammad. The two are always contrasted with each other. Sources also consistently talk about both as part of the larger badiyat al-Sham, including Arabic sources like [1] (cited in the article), if machine translation can be trusted. Al-Sham of course traditionally included most of these areas.
As I said on the draft, I do think we could and/or should have an article on the hammad, it's just that the current content overlaps substantially with the existing article at Syrian Desert and the terminology used doesn't make the distinction clear. Apart from translation issues, this is a desert border region, so geographic concepts are fuzzy at best. It's fantastic to have someone that can access Arabic sources, but the current content of arwiki isn't necessarily correct. – Joe (talk) 19:11, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joe Roe I agree with you in some points regarding the arwiki problems and that it does indeed overlaps with other subjects. But that doesn't mean that it is wrong or a different concept, I understand you worked in the region, but I'm a native, and it is much clearer to me, as well we can't evaluate an article based on your personal experience, or mine even. But what I explained in my previous comment still stands, they overlap as geographic regions, but still they are different as I explained. Magedsaleh392 (talk) 20:37, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not disagreeing with that. – Joe (talk) 03:55, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lakes

[edit]

Please pay attention to Wikipedia's rules about categories — namely, an article gets filed only in the most specific appropriate categories, and not in every parent layer up the same tree.

For example, a lake in Algeria goes in Category:Lakes of Algeria, but it does not also go in Category:Lakes or Category:Algeria alongside that — Category:Lakes of Algeria is already a subcategory of both of the other two, meaning that the page is already under those other two categories by virtue of being in Category:Lakes of Algeria, so a page only goes in the most specific category, and does not go in the parents at the same time.

So please follow the proper method of categorization in the future, because having to clean this up on a regular basis is getting a bit tiresome. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 14:39, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This works the same way for every other country too. It's not different for Saudi Arabia than it is for Algeria — a lake in Saudi Arabia also goes only in Category:Lakes of Saudi Arabia, and not also in Category:Lakes, Category:Saudi Arabia or Category:Geography of Saudi Arabia. Which parts exactly needs more citation? since every single paragraph has a source, and also, the history section as it says in it, it focuses on mentioning of the mountain from historical writings, so yes most of them are medieval, but what is the problem with that? @Snowman304 Magedsaleh392 (talk) 17:21, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't realize this was just a direct translation from the Arabic Wikipedia.
There's no citation for the height, which is a basic fact about the mountain. The citations don't support anything in the first two paragraphs. The Ministry of Interior source does not mention the mountain or distances, at least from what I can tell through Google Translate.
The citation "Mentioned by Nasr citing Yaqoot, Lexicon of Countries 3/329" tells me nothing of where to find the source. Is it a website? A book? Who are Nasr and Yaqoot? Is the source in Arabic? What does 3/329 mean? When was the source written?
These things might be more important to expanding the article in mainspace, but what sort of rocks is the mountain made of? Are there animals? Has anyone written about it since the medieval era? Has anything important happened there? What makes this mountain important enough to have an article about?
Also, where did you get the spelling Edqus? I'm not very familiar with Saudi dialects, but I know fuṣḥā doesn't have an /e/ sound. There's Jabal Idqis listed in List of mountains in Saudi Arabia. Could that be the same mountain? Snowman304|talk 01:25, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Translating from other Wikipedias

[edit]

Hi Magedsaleh392, when an article like Muslim conquest of Armenia is tagged with a suggestion to translate content from another Wikipedia, it does not mean you should replace the entire article or remove existing sourced content in the process, as you did there ([3]). It's merely a suggestion that editors can potentially find some useful material there that could be translated if appropriate; even then, there may be good reason not to do this, as other Wikipedia articles are not necessarily in better compliance with core content policies (sometimes even if other editors reviewed it there). And among other considerations: if there are plenty of English-language references on a topic, it's not ideal for an article on the English wiki to rely disproportionately on non-English references. Please be more selective in your addition of translated material from other Wikis and do not remove existing content without providing a good reason specific to that content.

Also, when you are adding citations to non-English sources, you need to include the original title and names of the publication, instead of (or in addition to) their English translations. Otherwise, it's actually more difficult to find the original references, especially if there's no link or if the link expires (as often happens over time). Are you using Google or another tool to translate material? R Prazeres (talk) 18:34, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Magedsaleh392: This latest edit is downright worse. Can you please acknowledge and respond to the feedback above? Let me know if you have questions. R Prazeres (talk) 21:24, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Magedsaleh392: once again, can you please clarify whether you are using Google Translate or a similar tool for copying and translating material from the Arabic Wikipedia? Your lack of response so far is concerning. R Prazeres (talk) 22:33, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, sorry I was busy, and no I don't use google translate, I'm a native Arabic speaker. Thank you Magedsaleh392 (talk) 12:02, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
