Mary Hood

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article Mary Hood, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. As you can see, when someone posts on your talk page, you get a big orange "You have new messages" banner, but if you write on your own talk page, I don't get any message at all. Joining is very simple — just go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting/Members and add your username to the list. Don't worry that joining obligates you to active participation in the project; you're free to work as much or as little as you want. And about the historic buildings — if you're interested in helping with articles related to historic preservation, you could look into the National Register of Historic Places WikiProject, with which I'm quite active. Even if you're not interested in joining this project, there's one way in which you could contribute very actively — we always need more photos of sites on the National Register of Historic Places. Situation with the softball player is resolved. In the future, you can undo this yourself quite easily: go into the article history (for example, here) and click the "undo" button at the end of the line that describes the most recent edit. Peters House/Ivy Hall

Thanks for contributing the images - I remember eating there in the late '70s when it was The Mansion Restaurant; I was a poor starving student at Tech and a family friend took us there. Atlanta is rather underrepresented in the pictures line, so its good to see somebody's getting out and taking pictures.

The infobox image is a bit tricky, because you have to leave off the File: prefix when inserting the image into the infobox, which isn't consistent with other infobox templates, and I consistently screw it up. To Acroterion: If you're referring to an NRHP reference number, I don't know the number. Some sources (such as the hotel's own webpage[2]) claim that the hotel is on the NRHP, but I question whether that is accurate. I can't find it on the National Park Service's own listing of HRHP sites.[3] I suspect that it is merely a contributing building in a historic district. Oops, I intended to address the question to Carsonmc, but I think you're right; I suspect it's part of the Midtown HD. The Georgian Terrace is in any case sufficiently notable on its own, and would be a major contributing building in the HD. First, thank you, Canadian2006. The page looks fantastic. I'll add the history that I have. It's quite interesting. I will try to get around to it this weekend, if not by the end of next week. And the source link will come in quite handy. As I usually pull from multiple sources and then compile it into one narrative, I generally put all the cites at the bottom of the block text, e.g. Reinhardt College history.

To both of you... as far as whether the building is actually listed in and of itself or as a contributing building, I'll have to dig around for the actual fact. According to my notes, it would have been listed (in either case) in 1986. It's listing blocked local plans for demolition. I'll find out - I know being listed doesn't prevent a bldg. from being torn down, that comes, generally, from local protections, et al. In Atl. from the City and Atl. Urban Design in the form of a Landmark Bldg. So, hum...

Acroterion, I think you said you were from Atl. or went to school here, Canadian2006, were you originally form this area or have you visited? The intersection the Georgian Terrace sits on, in my opinion, is one of the finest in Atl. Stoddart's Ponce de Leon Apartments sits on one corner, The Fox Theater on the other, and, then, of course, the GA Terrace on the third corner.

The article looks great, and does a fine job of documenting its notability, completely apart from any National Register listing. As a major contributing building in an HD, there would be some shielding effect against demolition. I remember the neighborhood well; there are several buildings from the '60s that are no more - the round C&S Tower at North Ave. and W. Peachtree, the white First National Bank building at Peachtree and North. The Georgian Terrace and the Fox formed the anchor to the neighborhood. I went to Tech from 1976-1980 and returned for a master's degree 1983-1985. If we can determine its NRHP status, we can adapt the infobox accordingly, as there's an option for contributing buildings. Thank you for the comments on the page. I loved putting it together. I remember the C&S Tower and the First Nat. Bank, sadly, you can see its demolition on youtube.com. Have you ever been to Atlanta Time Machine. The site has great pics of the city and of the buildings you mentioned. As far as determining the NR district info. for the Fox area, the City of Atlanta's website mentions this: Dunagan, H. Lee. "Fox Theatre District" National Register of Historic Places, which may help us in our endeavors. The next page I want to create is for the Rufus Rose House on Peachtree. NRHP infobox

To make the infobox (and the article skeleton) we use the Elkman NRHP Infobox Generator [4] created by Elkman. More can be found concerning its use at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Style guide#Lead section. It really simplifies the creation process, and can be used as a simple research tool to make a rough cut of listing status, as it's a digest of the NRHP database. Image deletion

To understand what's going on, you'll need to look into our non-free content criteria. Among the requirements for using a nonfree image is that its presence be essentially invaluable to the article. For this reason, it's quite okay to have an image of a nonfree book cover on the article about the book — it helps readers of the article to indentify the book in a way that nothing else can. However, book covers aren't essential to understanding an author; consequently, a nonfree book cover shouldn't be used on an article about the book's author.

One of the images is fine to keep, however — File:DSCN0250.JPG. Unlike the others, this cover isn't original enough to be copyrighted: there are no pictures, and the sole content is a little bit of text and a green background. There's no way that someone can copyright the name of a book (imagine someone getting sued for writing the title of a book and nothing more!) or of its author, and the statement about it being an award winner is likewise too short and simple to be copyrighted. Since fonts themselves can't be copyrighted, and since you can't copyright the color green, there's nothing eligible for copyright in this image. Therefore, this image doesn't fall under the nonfree content criteria, and since it will help somewhat in the author's article, there's nothing wrong with having it. Thank you, Nyttend for this explanation. It makes perfect sense. I guess on a personal level, I hate seeing something deleted after it has existed, without attracting notice, for two years. Too, humans are visually stimulated, so the more, rather than lack of, photos in an article, the more visually appealing, I think, and the more it breaks up the monotony of the text, the more we (the modern reader in this visual age) are drawn to it. Even smaller paragraphs relaxs and tricks the mind, making the text more digestible (read Proust's In Search of Lost Time for the opposite effect)! ;-)
All that being said, I understand Fastily's reason for deleting the two photos. It's diligence in use - fair and justified - that make Wikipedia what it is, rather than a place for people to post anything they want. As always, thank you both for helping me learn the Wiki-way! WP:NFCC#3a just means that we shouldn't over use non-free content when one file would suffice (e.g. A user uploads 25 copyrighted screenshots of say, Halo 2 gameplay. But why use 25 files to illustrate gameplay when one single image already gets the job done? Not only that, there are copyright concerns associated with excessive use of copyrighted content on a project who is licensed under the free CC-BY-SA 3.0 license.) WP:NFCC#3a also applies to Derivative Works (namely user generated collages of non-free images which all illustrate the same topic - so a collage of several images of a copyrighted statue where there is no FOP would be unacceptable). Hi Carsonmc. I just received a note from MBisanz (see User talk:MBisanz#File:Rufus M. Rose House 1903.jpg). I guess the email wan't sufficiently detailed. For an email to be acceptable for OTRS, it must indicate a specific license (see WP:ICT/All for a full list of WIkipedia-compatible licenses) and the file name, which in this case is "File:Rufus M. Rose House 1903.jpg". If you don't want to go through the hassle to contact the Georgia Archives, it's fine - I understand. As far as I can tell, it looks fine as is - at any rate, it's rather unlikely another sysop would go through and delete the file. Thank you for going through the hassle to get permission for this file (despite the fact we didn't need it, as, the file is public domain) and uploading it to Wikipedia. I'm on break from work, so I can't give you detailed help; however, you have a significant problem here. Unless you set up a camera on a timer and then sat down next to her, you're not the copyright holder; as long as someone else took the photo, you can't release rights to the photo. If the photographer is happy to have rights released, you can easily prove that the license is valid by having them send a permissions email to OTRS.
