Nomination for deletion of Template:Coast Rail Corridor

[edit]

Template:Coast Rail Corridor has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the entry on the Templates for discussion page. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 19:56, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Park Presidio Boulevard has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No sources, stub

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. pbp 02:57, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Former stations

[edit]

On both enwiki and Commons, we use "former" categories to distinguish active stations from former stations. For railroads that don't have current passenger service, we only have Category:Former X stations and not Category:X stations. Why should KCS be the exception? Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:26, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What he said; the stations haven't been "current" KCS stations in fifty years. The CPKC merger doesn't affect this. Mackensen (talk) 11:26, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi.1415926535: @Mackensen: Hey, this was the most populated category containing KCS stations. Go ahead and change the category name if you want, but change it in every article if you do. -MJ (talk) 21:31, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I've moved all of them to the "former" category. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 22:45, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mjdestroyerofworlds,

When you tag pages for any type of deletion (CSD, PROD, AFD/RFD/TFD/etc,), you shoud post a notification on the talk page of the page creator. This is done most easily by using Twinkle to tag pages for deletion. It's a very useful editing tool which makes a lot of tasks much simpler. Just make sure your Twinkle Preferences are set to "Notify page creator" and then Twinkle will post a notice any time you tag a page for deletion. I encourage you to try it out. Liz Read! RDT conversions

[edit]

Why are you converting RDTs that used {{BS-map}} without problem to use {{Routemap}} instead? I cannot find any discussion on the matter either on the talkpages of the templates concerned, at WT:RDT, WT:RAIL or WT:UKRAIL. Besides being undiscussed, your changes are completely unnecessary, and moreover the cryptic syntax (which is not used anywhere else) makes the RDT almost unmaintainable. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 16:20, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) The last RfC was seven years ago; it's probably time to revisit that. I note that in the intervening years {{BS-table}} and {{Railway line header}} were deprecated and deleted, and BS-map has half as many transclusions. Mackensen (talk) 20:53, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Redrose64: @Mackensen: deprecated templates are deprecated. BS-map is bulky and much less flexible than routemaps. WP:BEBOLD -MJ (talk) 06:22, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Redrose64: wait, cryptic syntax? are you joking? BS-map syntax is one of the more confusing things on this site. Template:Routemap is used in over 22,000 pages - hardly "not used anywhere else" as you claim. -MJ (talk) 06:26, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Where is {{BS-map}} deprecated? The {{routemap}} syntax is cryptic because all those double-tildes and backslashes are only used in that template, not used anywhere else in the whole of Wikipedia. They are an invention purely for that template, and I have always had immense difficulty working out how the appearance that I want should be written in that totally unintuitive syntax.
BS-map is hardly confusing, it uses uses straight Wikicode markup. If you can't handle that markup, you shouldn't be messing with templates at all.
The icons I can handle, they are the same in both templates, and are not difficult because to show e.g. File:BSicon HST.svg, I simply omit the File:BSicon and the .svg leaving HST These codes are catalogued in detail in a number of pages, here and on Commons. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:07, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have always had immense difficulty working out how the appearance that I want should be written in that totally unintuitive syntax. Personally, I was always at risk getting lost in the many pipes of BS-map and found I greatly preferred how Routemap does it, especially with the clear distinction between separating icons (backslashes) and separating text (tildes). Not having to change the numbered BS templates every time the width changed is also a plus in my book.
I sympathize that you've have difficulty mastering the syntax. I (and I suspect others) are willing to help you master it, if you're open to that approach. Maintaining a separate set of templates (with known issues) indefinitely isn't a sustainable approach. Mackensen (talk) 17:35, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Trains operating on A-day

[edit]

FYI, I also have a draft I'm working on occasionally: User:Pi.1415926535/A-Day trains. Best, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:03, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi.1415926535: I did some preliminary searches to see if there was a similar page somewhere, but I guess you just narrowly avoided me. It was informative to just put it all together. The problem I was contemplating going forward was how to denote that stuff like the City of Los Angeles was a the same train (from the perspective of a rider, which I think is an appropriate way to interpret what the "service" was) just operated by a different company along its route. -MJ (talk) 21:36, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, even reliable sources differ as to the number of "trains" operated immediately before A-Day. That's complicated by the multi-operator through trains you mention, as well as trains that operated 1, 2, 3, or 6 days a week. 366 is thrown about pretty often, while Edmonson's count that you cite is rather higher. I'll let you know when I get the list complete enough for a move to mainspace. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 22:44, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
IIRC, Thoms has an extensive list too. Mackensen (talk) 22:50, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think the actual number is less important than just explaining the operation and fates of these routes. As we've seen in the List of Eligible... Talkpage, even pretty concise lists seem to leave out things like the CWR Skunk. -MJ (talk) 23:22, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's a problem; I've yet to see a source that addresses the non-Class Is except fleetingly (like Thoms). RPSA 1970 didn't say as much, but I think it was understood that the law was only dealing with the Class Is. Even then, it was up to them to decide if their services were intercity or suburban. Flipping through the 1972 Guide, I see plenty of railroads offering tourist/local/mixed services. None of the "Service before A-Day" sources I've seen include the non-Class Is in the list. A tag has been placed on Tempate:F Line (Key System) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a recently created redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer, or other unlikely search term.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Hi MJ, on the talk page of the CAHSR article you called this article a "dumpster fire", and several of us agree. There is currently a collaborative effort going on to put out the fire. As it has been burning for quite a while, we see little hope in reconstructive surgery, so we are more or less building a new dumpster. Given that you recently edited a related subarticle, I wanted to invite you to have a look at the discussion/proposals. See article talk page and the work-in-progress. Route diagram template request?

[edit]

Hi! I've noticed the great work you've done with creating route diagram templates for rapid transit and light rail systems. Hopefully this doesn't come off as disrespectful, but would you be willing to create a unified one including all three lines for the Vancouver SkyTrain by any chance? You're obviously way more proficient at this than I am, I've never created one completely from scratch before, let alone one for an entire rapid transit system, haha. If not, that's totally fine! I understand if you're busy with other projects on here or real life stuff. I just figured that the system was missing one. While there is already one but with all of the major routes of TransLink, and technically it could be repurposed in some form for this new template, the geometry of the system is not really shown in detail in order to fit everything on that diagram. Please let me know what you think! Thank you! OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 06:38, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How would you feel about the inclusion of the maintenance and storage facilities on that particular diagram? I'm surprised there doesn't seem to be a book specific to OE. I just found my Arcadia book on the Oregonian Railway and just got a pile of SP books, but I'm not sure I have the Willamette Valley Railways one. Anyway, thanks for making the route map! I mostly refer to old company timetables or maps to get some of the finer details, which can be found a lot on the webs. -MJ (talk) 17:31, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Volume 3 of Donald B. Robertson's Encyclopedia of Western Railroad History is a good starting point for all railroads in Oregon. Mackensen (talk) 21:54, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
