License tagging for Image:Nafec cl 160.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Nafec cl 160.gif. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 23:08, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Just saying hello

[edit]

I came across your user page and you seem to be my naval counterpart. I have spent much of my time here updating the USMC avaition pages. A year and a half later and I still have a ways to go. Anyway, just wanted to say hello and, although I have only created a few USN pages, if there is ever any help I can provide just drop me a line. Portal:United States Navy‎ tabs

[edit]

Hi, Wilsbadkarma. I noticed you're working on tabs for Portal:United States Navy‎. I made a slight adjustment to the "spacer" color so, hopefully, it works out okay. Let me know if you would like any help with anything. I love working on portals. By the way, it looks great already! :-) Regards, Rfrisbietalk 16:20, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Navy Squadron List

[edit]

Looks to be off to a good start. The layout is pretty similar to List of United States Marine Corps aircraft squadrons; the major thing I'd suggest at this point is being a bit more sparing with the bolding—there's no need to put everything in the table in boldface. ;-) Kirill Lokshin 03:02, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sorry I did not reply to your question earlier but I have been on vacation. First let me say that the page is looking great. I know the work that is involved with creating something like that so kudos for all of the effort. I do have one concern though. I see that you have taken a different approach than I did and listed every name of every squadron that ever existed vice their name at the time of deactivation. I am not criticizing but I must say that the list is extremely long and there is a large degree of duplication (VB=VA=VFA). It has taken me a good 6-8 months to research the USMC list that I have now as far as what existed and what they changed their names too. The WWII and 1950s records are incomplete and I have had to order some pretty obscure books to fill some gaps. Not that the way I did it is better but I throw it out there as a way of making the list more readable and a bit shorter. Then again the way you have done it allows for the old squadron logos to be used in the list.

My thoughts aside, the list is looking great. Whatever your decision, run with it and I am sure it will look great. --Looper5920 16:45, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Having your own page deleted

[edit]

If you create a page, and before anyone else edits it you decide to have it deleted, like what seems to have happened with Portal:United States Navy/Selected picture/11, please put a {{db-self}} at the top of the page, in stead of blanking it. This will attract an administrator to it to have it deleted.Eli Falk 07:17, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • Im in the process of replacing the images for the portal since that page had one that was vertical instead of horizontal im in the process of chaning them to new images as we speak.
[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:061209-N-1121F-001.jpg. However, Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation.

rotating portal thingie

[edit]

Wil, thanks for your help with that rotating page content thingy whachamawhosit (formal, official name, right?). I'm still kind of a newbie (two months and counting...), so I don't know all the ins-and-outs of Wikipedia, and you helped quite a bit! I'm going to act on it in a day or two (spending time with my kids on Christmas break now), so again, I really do appreciate your help! Feel free to help out more anytime (please-please)!

(In case you can't tell, I also happen to be a bit irreverent and snide, with an unusual sense of humor. Please don't take offense at it - just trying to keep it light while letting you know that you DID indeed help me out of a bit of a jam!) -Dan (AKA NDCompuGeek 02:58, 27 December 2006 (UTC))[reply]

List of United States Navy staff corps

I noticed the expansion you made to the List of United States Navy staff corps. Very nice. Would you mind making the image table either two rows or a long column, or some format that is not so wide? For small screens, such as laptops, it requires scrolling to see it all. Thanks. — ERcheck (talk) 04:03, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Infobox for Airstations and such

[edit]

Well, I'm not a big fan of creating new infoboxes for every little thing; it tends to become a maintenance nightmare fairly quickly. I would suggest instead simply adding any needed fields to {{Infobox Military Structure}} itself; if you could put together a list of what's missing, it would be fairly trivial to add. Squadrons

[edit]

Great job on reworking the squadrons for the CAF page. Need to ask a favor though. Hold off on the USMC squadrons for a bit. I want to use the old WWII logos. Some of the ones up there are very recent and wouldn't have any place in the article. Just wanted to give you a heads up before it got posted. --Looper5920 21:54, 3 January 2007 (UTC) [reply]

List of United States Navy ratings

[edit]

It's been quite a while since you first requested me to review this, so I'd give it a full review. I have a few major concerns, but they can easily be addressed if you're decisive on getting it featured.

  • Convert all "*", "**", and others to proper note format using {{ref label}} and {{note}}. See Trapped in the Closet (South Park) as an example.
  • I've noted a lot of prose that needs partial rewriting, please avoid using ";" for separation or addition. You should also avoid repetition of the word "and". For instance, I'd convert
...including gears; shafting and controllable pitch propellers; assigned auxiliary equipment propulsion control systems; electrical and electronic circuitry up to the printed circuit module; and alarm and warning circuitry.
to
...including gears, shafting and controllable pitch propellers, assigned auxiliary equipment propulsion control systems, electrical and electronic circuitry up to the printed circuit module, and alarm or warning circuitry.
  • Please link technical terms per WP:CONTEXT, there are plenty of paragraphs which require this kind of wikification. Not a single link in the "Engineering/Hull Ratings" section descriptions.
  • I really don't like black-and-white insignia, are you sure no actual insignia can be given rather than only the symbol itself?
  • All the images need to provide the URL which they where found on to confirm their copyright status. Although it is optional, you might also add a better summary which includes linking and an explanation of this list where it is used.
  • Any way in which Badges of the United States Navy can be merged inside this? Try to avoid content forking.
  • Some ratings are not linked, if a rating doesn't have it's own article, it doesn't mean it shouldn't be linked.
  • The external links should not be in italic font, which shouldn't be used unless in cases described by WP:MOS. You should also include the subject of the links as their label, for instance, change "Navy Ratings, Past and present" to "Further history and description of the United States Navy ratings".
  • Lead: Needs expansion, possibly add a mention of the ranks' history from here. WP:LEAD states that the name of the list should appear in bold in its beginning. Also remove the external spacing between the paragraphs.
  • Minor: Some descriptions and notes lack a period at their end. Some references are one space ahead of the text, which is against WP:FN. Only the first letter of each section's title should be capitalized per WP:MSH. In the "Changed or Disestablished Ratings" section the full dates require linking per WP:DATE. The Barnstar of Diligence
This Barnstar of Diligence is awarded to Wilsbadkarma for bringing the United States Navy Portal up to featured status! Rfrisbietalk 02:37, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hey, I just took a quick look at the new table layout. Personally, I find that style of "double rows" per item hard to follow visually. It's too easy to get confused about which narrative goes with which set of coulmns ID'd in the header. It needs a stronger visual separater (a "big fat line" or "white (blue) space"). I did a spacing test and got some interesting results! Maybe using a 5-10px blue divider between sections would do the trick. :-) Looking at your template, I didn't even try to decipher it off the bat, but it seemed like parts of it would be simpler coding if you used #switch:, rather than #ifeq:. That's it for now, the formatting template is a great idea, it just needs a little more visual clarity. Rfrisbietalk 03:15, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:RQ-2B pioneer uav.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:RQ-2B pioneer uav.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 18:46, 6 January 2007 (UTC).
