New Page Review - newsletter

Hello TheresNoTime/old,
Breaking the back of the backlog
We now have 804 New Page Reviewers! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog. Now it's time for action.
Mid July to 01 Oct 2016

If each reviewer does only 10 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
Let's get that over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

Second set of eyes

Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work. Read about it at the new Monitoring the system section in the tutorial.

Getting the tools we need - 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey: Please vote

With some tweaks to their look, and some additional features, Page Curation and New Pages Feed could easily be the best tools for patrollers and reviewers. We've listed most of what what we need at the 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey. Voting starts on 28 November - please turn out to make our bid the Foundation's top priority. Please help also by improving or commenting on our Wishlist entry at the Community Wishlist Survey. Many other important user suggestions are listed at at Page Curation.

Sent to all New Page Reviewers. Discuss this newsletter here. If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the mailing list. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:16, 26 November 2016 (UTC) .

TOTP

I know what I just wrote at Wikipedia:Simple 2FA sounds like a joke, but there's a serious point behind it. Top of the Pops was one of the best known television shows of all time in Britain and the acroynm "TOTP" is sufficiently well-known to the point my brain keeps parsing all these discussions about "Top of the Pops authentication". However, if you're not British and / or under 30, you won't know this! Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:46, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: Must have crossed messages just then, the thanks still applies - I vaguely remember Top of the Pops but given the fact I'm 22 I must be unaffected by the TOTP association! Thanks again -- samtar talk or stalk 16:51, 16 November 2016 (UTC)
You're slightly older than my step-daughter but not by much! I think TOTP terminally declined by the late 90s, and even then it wasn't the musical juggernaut back in the 70s and early 80s that could pretty much make or break someone's career. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:55, 16 November 2016 (UTC)
@Ritchie333: I swear you sometimes see TOTP on around Christmas though - along with copious Top Gear repeats and Jaws II.. -- samtar talk or stalk 13:45, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

I suggest updating the section on the grants here. A major benefit of using BotPasswords is that you can remove some of the non-required access from your account when using botpasswords, for example I use AWb and on my AWB Botpassword I left of all of the "admin" functions that I don't use AWB for. For most editors, they only will need the first 4 boxes. — xaosflux Talk 12:59, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

@Xaosflux: Good call - I've updated the section to reflect that. Feel free to make changes -- samtar talk or stalk 13:03, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

You are invited to join the discussion at WP:ANI#Range block needed - LTA IP editor who reverts Eik Corell. Regarding an edit filter you may have assisted with --Cameron11598 (Talk) 03:18, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Sam, when you're ready Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Samtar is begun. ϢereSpielChequers 15:40, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

I'll be ready to support if you accept the nomination and the RfA goes live. Good luck mate! Class455 (talk) 17:26, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
I know it's an old cliche, but seriously you're not an admin already? However, I was just about to run off and add my name as a co-nom, when something made me pause. Your most recently created article is 2016 Benidorm forest fires, and it mainly uses a citation from the Daily Mirror - a tabloid newspaper. An earlier creation, William J Tarling is largely unsourced. Church of Saint Winwaloe, Gunwalloe does appear to be in a reasonable shape aside (the most obvious error is a duplicate reference) but much of the article seems to have been added by other editors, and while I don't think it's against policy to pass your own AfC submission, it does get frowned on as spammers do that a lot to trying avoid getting their stuff speedy deleted at NPP. That is going to pretty much guarantee an oppose vote from Andrew D, and may take a few others along for the ride as well. Sorry, but having done that bit of research, I would probably !vote "neutral" in the RfA and recommend you read User:Kudpung/RfA criteria closely, specifically in this case point #5. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:30, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
@Ritchie333: Hey, no worries - I do see you as something of an authority on content and content creation, so these points are something I will take onboard and work through. Content creation is not my strong point but the core mission of the project is one I do care about deeply. I'll drop you an email if that's alright - thank you for the comments -- samtar talk or stalk 16:55, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
Sure, drop me an email. As you probably can guess, I didn't say any of the above to be mean, rather I didn't want to see this RfA run and then tank, and I'm sure you don't either. I know you pass with flying colours on technical chops and civility, and in this case the content really is the last missing piece of the jigsaw. I'm really not an authority on content creation at all, I've never single-handedly taken an article all the way through FAC yet, and I look up to numerous editors who have. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:02, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
You don't want to see it run and tank, then you oppose because of it? Interesting. Thankfully for the candidate the broader community doesn't seem to share your views. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 01:18, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
I would rather state my honest opinion than be a yes-man, and as you can see from the diffs on this talk page, I had a co-nomination for the RfA typed up which I hoped would smack it out of the park into WP:RFX200 and got stuck at the sentence : "He likes creating articles about [topic], such as ....". So this isn't a decision I take lightly or with any happiness, particularly as we've worked very well together recently. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:25, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
Sam, when is your RfA going live? Just curious, because I want to know when I need to support you ;). By the way, I hope you don't mind me updating the time on you edit notice, as the clocks have gone back. Class455 (talk) 12:33, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
@Class455: That's very kind, and I look forward to a reasoned support !vote I hope to be doing this soon, but as Ritchie points out above there are a couple of Ts to cross and Is to dot - it would be silly to rush in and ignore advice from a respected editor! And of course not, if you hadn't of done it I would still be an hour out ;P -- samtar talk or stalk 12:37, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

@Ritchie333: Just downhill from here... -- samtar talk or stalk 12:16, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
The first forty-eight hours;
  • Made an admin at 15:50 on the 4th of December. First block enacted at 16:18 the same day. It's a test block, against an unsuspecting IP victim that is reverted just 4 minutes later.
  • 23:33 December 4, an edit-war starts on Ritchie333's talk page.
  • 14:58 December 6, Samtar becomes aware of the battle which has now escalated to a full on BRD. Block, Revert, Discu-no? no D?... Full on BR.
  • 15:33 the same day, Pikachu joins the fray, but, who's side is he on?
  • By 15:56 he's been warned. Will it be enough to take him off the course for a block?
  • 16:01 December 6, Pikachu takes it to AN/I and drags Samtar along with him. Within minutes everything has been explained.
  • 16:18 Bbb23 closes the discussion preventing a BOOMERANG block. Disaster has been averted. All ... within the first forty-eight hours (forty-nine but who's counting). Next time on the first forty-eight hours we'll be looking at ... to be acknowledged.
  • But in all seriousness, as unfortunate and I imagine a little unnerving/daunting as that was, you did not perpetuate that edit war, it started long before you got there and ended quite a bit after you left. You didn't even get to 3RR. All in all, you did what was best and within guidelines. WP:DENY and WP:RBI. Quite an eventful few days though. Keep up the good work :) Mr rnddude (talk) 12:37, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

It's sad to see two good editors getting blocked for edit-warring.

I want to be aware for myself: in cases as these; if I see a disruptive editor who has a strong personal POV, and reverts/removes sources content disregarding the NPOV of the article; as he can't see negative content about his country (removes atrocities section), his favorite political party (changes the lead section to something good from one source which is primary source), his favorite actor (removes controversy section). I revert him as per policy more then three times. Result — Shall I will get blocked for edit-warring? --Marvellous Spider-Man 14:42, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

@Marvellous Spider-Man: It is indeed a shame - I tried to get some dialogue going because in my experience, once people get talking issues can be resolved. WP:NOT3RR explains the exceptions to the three revert rule better than I ever could, but basically if you're not reverting a BLP violation or blatant vandalism you could get blocked for warring over content. It's always best to open a discussion on the article's talk page and pop a note on the editors talk advising them to take part in the discussion -- samtar talk or stalk 14:49, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Successful RfA

Congrats..The admins' T-shirt for you. CAPTAIN RAJU () 15:53, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
Congratulations on your successful RFA!
In a self-imposed tradition I'm sure many people wish I would stop, allow me to impart the words of wisdom I received from the puppy after my RFA passed –
almost ten long, sordid, I-really-really-should-have-found-a-better-hobby years ago:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version. (I got nothing here. It's inevitable.)
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. Without exception, you will pick the wrong one to do. (See #5.)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll. (You'll attract many more of those now, because mop. They must like to drink the dirty water in the bucket.)
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block, because really, what else is there to live for?
  5. Remember that when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology. It will not be a personal attack because we are admins and, therefore, we are all rouge anyway.
  6. Finally, remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Qualification

Hi, Samtar. I wanted to know if i qualify to become an admin. I made over 100 edits, had no blocks, and no disruptive editing. So, do I qualify to be an admin? --Wyatt2049 (talk) 13:17, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

@Wyatt2049: Thanks for the message - whilst there is no set criteria for adminship, the RfA voting community has certain expectations. A very experienced editor, Kudpung, has written a very fair yet thorough RfA criteria - if you can get to a position where you meet most of these it is likely you would pass a RfA. I know it looks like a lot, but don't be discouraged! Keep working in the areas you find interesting, help out with anti-vandalism where you can, stay civil even when the editing gets heated and always ask for help when you need it As always, my talk page is open for any questions or concerns you may have -- samtar talk or stalk 13:24, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
@Samtar: But, with 129 edits, would I become an admin? --Wyatt2049 (talk) 13:48, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
@Wyatt2049: We would need a lot longer than six months and 129 edits to judge your ability to understand and enact policy - so no, it is unlikely you would pass at this time -- samtar talk or stalk 13:52, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
@Samtar: So how long, and how many edits--Wyatt2049 (talk) 15:13, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Varies from person to person, but, in this climate I'd say a good minimum is 2-3 years and at least 4,000 edits. You'd need to demonstrate an understanding of article, behavioural and procedural policy for a start. Depending on what you're specializing in, you'd also need considerable competence in that area as well. Take Samtar as the example, he's aspiring to AIV and UAA. Well, he's an editfilter manager - so he's definitely got the marks to deal with vandalism and abusive edits -, has considerable experience at both UAA and AIV, seems like a good candidate for the role. What else? temperament - calm, collected, not trigger happy, and patient. Contributions? not the strongest on article construction, but, has at least some experience in the area. So forth and so forth. Mr rnddude (talk) 15:23, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
What about a bureaucrat. Do I qualify --Wyatt2049 | (talk) 16:41, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

About an old idea

Hello. Times ago I, along with Doug Weller, proposed a filter in order to contrast a notorius disruptor. The filter wasn't activated due to the editor's sudden inactivity, and the discussion was archived here. Now the disruptor is back, as you can see on the history of articles such as Ra and Horus; I've just reverted one of his edits on Ancient Egyptian religion. I'd appreciate a lot if you could now reconsider the filter's activation. Khruner (talk) 18:01, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

@Khruner: I spent a moment thinking of an Egyptian-ish pun I could use here, but I've got Nuthing - anyway, I've re-enabled 737 (logging only) and it looks like it would have caught these recent edits. I'll leave it log only for a little longer before switching to disallow -- samtar talk or stalk 18:20, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Nice pun, I don't understand the log only thing but hope that it will deal successfuly with our disruptor. Thanks! Khruner (talk) 18:34, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Basically, it right now it just looks for the addition. If there are no false positives, it will be changed to disallow edits of the sort. Dat GuyTalkContribs 18:36, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I certainly endorse this. I didn't keep track of the number of editors and reverts involved in the last round, but it is a pain. I blocked several IPs, other Admins protected some articles. Doug Weller talk 18:40, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

RevDel

Do you really believe that this falls under the Revdel policy? Is that "grossly degrading"? RBI is the applicable policy in this case.--v/r - TP 18:54, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Did you see the username? RBI is even more applicable if their edits aren't publicly shown. It's obvious RD2/3. Lets stop this discussion as to deny what I believe is the sockmaster attention. Dat GuyTalkContribs 18:56, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
I saw the username. We can RevDel the username w/o RevDeling the content. If you want to discuss this via email, feel free. I'm not angry about this or care much, but it's worth bringing up about a very delicate policy and admin tool.--v/r - TP 18:59, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Me neither, sorry if I'm coming off as it. The username is as a signature I believe. Dat GuyTalkContribs 19:00, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
It was unsigned. Again, willing to let this go - it's just that there is no one else to hold admins accountable on deletions other than other admins so I tend to nitpick on RevDel and CSD stuff.--v/r - TP 19:02, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Hate to pile on to the appropriate comments, but a new admin (congrats!) can never receive too much advice .. probably not a good idea to then create their talk page :) I'd normally G3 or G10 such creations. And DatGuy, I also had to delete your edit summary. Rollback is not so good for bad usernames. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:15, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Thank you all for the advice, I will definitely reflect on this - @TParis: you are entirely correct, I should have just RevDel'd the username and I will ensure I am much more attentive to this in the future. I understand the RevDel tool is extremely sensitive and should be used with care. @Zzuuzz: any advice is very appreciated. Edit warring on Madhesh article and insults on my talk page by a user

On the Madhesh article, a user by the name of Template:Rajivkilanashrestha is reverting sourced content. I've attempted to discuss with him on the talk page and opened a case on tbe noticeboard however I've received no reply. He's also resorted to insulting me on my own talk page. Can the appropriate action please be taken? Damien2016 (talk) 18:11, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

@Damien2016: Hi, I'm having a quick look at this now - it looks like you've both been edit warring over some content and both need to cool off before returning to editing. Myself and other administrators are keeping an eye on this and should the back and forth edit warring continue both of you could end up blocked. Obviously I don't want to see that happen, so could you explain to me what it is Rajivkilanashrestha is doing which you disagree with? I have attempted to copyedit some of their additions so that they make a bit more sense -- samtar talk or stalk 20:16, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for taking a look at it, my issue is that I'm posting sourced content which is swiftly removed without discussion. It's then replaced with an unsourced paragraph that contains no references for the most part. The few references that are there fail to corroborate with the paragraph. I believe the issue is being sorted out on the notice board but thank you for responding. Damien2016 (talk) 21:05, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Just curious...

Hi Samtar,

When blocking IP addresses, I was just wondering if you take the addresses' block log into account when considering the block length of an IP address. Some admins do, some don't. So I'm wondering what your stance is on that matter, since I know that you are a fairly new admin, ;-) Cheers. 2607:FB90:82E1:5CCD:0:E:9DDE:AD01 (talk) 21:03, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi IP - I do give it a quick look over and do consider blocking for longer if there is a block log. However I recently blocked an IP for 1 week where the previous block was 2 years - I did this because I wanted to see if there was the same level of disruption coming from the address (as they had been unblocked for a couple of months with no disruption before today). Do you have any suggestions? As you state, I'm very new and I always welcome advice! -- samtar talk or stalk 21:09, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
As I see it, when viewing the contributions of shared IP addresses (particularly schools), the ratio of constructive to unconstructive edits is generally pretty heavy towards the unconstructive ones... If the block log reflects this type of behavior through past lengthy block durations, than blocking these shared IP addresses for a lengthy period of time generally helps to prevent more vandalism from occurring rather than it is preventing editors with positive intentions to edit the encyclopedia. Usually I find these IP addresses through patrolling ClueBot NG's contributions, as well as patrolling the edit filter logs. (But ClueBot has been down for quite some time now). Also the school and anon block templates give editors advice of what to do when they are prevented from editing., due to the school/anon block. 2607:FB90:82E1:5CCD:0:E:9DDE:AD01 (talk) 21:37, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
That's what happened with my school IP address lately when I was in school and checking the edits and all of them are bad edits. I can still log in into my account during school breaks. KGirlTrucker81 huh? what I've been doing 22:20, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi JustAGuyOnWikipedia, I understand that must be frustrating - blocks on IRC auto-expire after 24 hours so please feel free to come back tomorrow. I should note however that apparently you were told to drop the stick a couple of times regarding WikiProjects - being able to respond to this sort of advice is really a key element of getting on well with the Wikipedia community, both on IRC and here on the project. 87.244.181.185

Hi Sam, how's it going? I'm not sure whether the block length of 87.244.181.185 (talk · contribs · block log) was intentional. Typically, open proxies are blocked to prevent logged-in editing - you've probably seen all the sock accounts using open proxies. This IP, labelled a dynamic range and blocked back in 2015, all things considered, I would think a block length of a year or two would be appropriate. {{blocked proxy}} would be an appropriate template, as it is indeed open rather than a web server. No need to disable talk btw, that was only me. HTH. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:22, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

@Zzuuzz: that was unintentional after I got into a faff trying to get the settings right - I'm primed to (again) reblock with an expiry of 1 year, but it's been suggested I should also prevent logged in users from editing using this IP. The preset for {{blocked proxy}} (TW) and previous proxy blocks suggest that I don't need to prevent logged in users from using the IP - so now I'm just confused. Could you clarify before I spam this poor IPs block log even more? I think I'll leave proxy blocks to the experts for a while... -- samtar talk or stalk 20:23, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
You've got to start somewhere :) I'm not going to say that you have to prevent logged-in editing - some admins are allowed to differ, and some IPs are purposefully softblocked - but it is pretty much the norm. ProcseeBot takes this approach, Tor is hardblocked, also take a look at what checkusers and admins that you know do. I don't tend to use Twinkle for blocking, but the preset at WP:OP is also for hardblocks (or would be if it didn't need updating). Maybe you will come to the same conclusion, but I only really came here about the block length. -- zzuuzz (talk) 20:47, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
@Zzuuzz: There's a bigger learning curve than folks give you all credit for! I've corrected the block length, and please do feel free to drop me a message if you see me making mistakes -- samtar talk or stalk 20:59, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Hey Samtar, (as well as Zzuuzz) — thanks for taking a look into this IP, as I was the one who originally reported the proxy to Wikipedia:WikiProject on open proxies/Requests. From what you and Zzuuzz were discussing above, were you intending to hardblock the IP? From what it looks like, it still has "anon. only" in the block settings, but "account creation blocked" is already enabled though... 73.96.115.111 (talk) 00:21, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Now I've added a couple more requests to Wikipedia:WikiProject on open proxies/Requests, just in case if you wanted some extra practice... ;-) 2601:1C0:10E:636F:B80A:A583:74D1:5307 (talk) 05:29, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Apparently this is some bureaucratic architecture?

Hi samtar, would it be possible for you to indef semi the following three pages in my user space?

  1. User:Lourdes/TFAhistorylink.js
  2. User:Lourdes/TFAhistorylink
  3. WP:TFA title (an indef full on this if poss)

Thanks. Lourdes 11:46, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

@Lourdes: The JavaScript file can only be edited by yourself or an administrator, so I won't semi that. The second page in your userspace could probably be semi'd if there is a valid need. Do you have any reason for these to be protected? -- samtar talk or stalk 12:31, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Hello samtar and thanks for the reply. The second page is the documentation page for a script. How silly of me to forget about the javascript existing protection. Given that, there's no particularly killing need to protect the second page. So you may scratch that. The third page is a page created for use by the script, which calls the Template:TFA title. While all sub templates of Template:TFA title are already included in the title blacklist, the third page above which calls the TFA title template and is required for doing only that, is not included in the title blacklist. If one changes the content of the WP:TFA title, the complete output for the script would change. What would you suggest for the same; should it be protected or not? Thanks Lourdes 13:04, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
@Lourdes: In the time taken for me to quote bureaucracy at you another admin has gone ahead and done it - apologies if I'm treading a little too lightly, still getting the hang of these buttons! -- samtar talk or stalk 13:40, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
The building looks great...but...What are you talking about? Lourdes 14:01, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

A Question

Please pardon if this does not follow Wikipedia's rules and etiquette, but I'm pretty innocent when it comes to those things. My concern is the page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmananda_Krishna_Menon which keeps getting vandalized by a certain VictoriaGrayson.

There are many approaches in the philosophy of advaita (non-duality), one being the Direct Path, after the teachings of the sage referred to by this page. Apparently VictoriaGrayson is a hard-line, evangelical follower of some other approach, and disagrees with the Direct Path, so she keeps vandalizing that particular approach with the derogatory label "cult". I have no idea which approach she follows, but is it necessary to hate what is different? I have tried numerous times to undo her mean-spirited vandalism, but now you have jumped into this by siding with her and her personal vendetta.

My question is, Why? Why do you support her mean-spirited vendetta against a field of study that she personally does not like? Is there a list of approaches, philosophies, studies, etc, that VictoriaGrayson does not hate, and is there a way to put the Direct Path on that list?

Can't we just live and let live, instead of battling points of view that differ from those we happen to like? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.65.196.6 (talk) 19:28, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

IP, how exactly have I sid[ed] with her? By enabling Pending Changes protection? I have no opinion on the topic of the article, and am quite happy as long as it remains neutral and verifiable. I'm all for "live and let live" and will happily discuss this with you - I don't appreciate being accused of siding with anyone though -- samtar talk or stalk 19:44, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

I'm so sorry. As I said, I'm pretty innocent about the inner workings of Wikipedia. I didn't know what "Adding )" meant, and assumed (wrongly) that it meant something like locking out further changes. Please excuse my ignorance; we'll see what will happen with the review process.

"Derp vandalism" false positive

Hi Samtar, I hope you're doing well...

About the discussion regarding the 2607:FB90::/32 block due to "Derp vandalism" at WP:AN, (which I recently offered my two cents in that discussion as well)...

I had been recently getting some notifications that were blocking me from editing due to unvonstructive editing, and when I looked at the edit filter log entries for the IP address that I was using at the time, it said that the edit filter blocked me because of "Derp vandalism". Obviously, this is a false positive, as I was merely trying to add a shared IP address template to another IP address. The IP address that I was using which the edit filter blocked was 2607:FB90:8180:AB87:0:35:A5CE:5901 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). Though, when I attempted to try this again from the IPv4 address that I am currently using, it worked just fine. Maybe you would know something about this...? Regards. 172.58.40.107 (talk) 17:09, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi 172.58.40.107, yeah that sure looks like a false positive - I'll ask the creator of the filter and see if we can get that tweaked -- samtar talk or stalk 17:17, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi there; I would like to ask you a question. Before I do so I must say, with total sincerity, that it is in no way intended as a criticism. Rather, it is an attempt to get a handle on as aspect of the project which is, perhaps, not adequately defined. In AIV, as you clearly know, action against nominated vandals can only be taken (except in a few specific circumstances) if there is a recent warning and the vandalism is taking place now. As we obviously cannot hover with poised finger over possible vandals, I have always taken now to mean within the past few minutes. But, and this is my question, how would you define recent?--Anthony Bradbury"talk" 23:20, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

@Anthony Bradbury: Hi Anthony - I think my definition of recent is wavering a little as I'm getting used to what other admins block and don't block at AIV. Personally, I consider recent to be 'in the same day'. A warning issued yesterday is of course still valid and I have blocked where a final warning for vandalism was issued the day before. Do you have any suggestions on this? Am I perhaps being too liberal or conservative in my definition? -- samtar talk or stalk 08:12, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
Assuming that the vandal has had the correct number of warnings, which as you know will between one and four according to the nature and severity of the vandalism, I personally would consider a recent warning as being within 24 hours. I define vandalizing "now" as being any time in the past 4 to 6 hours, but if I came across seriously offensive vandalism outside that time frame I would assume that other admins had failed to spot it and would block.--Anthony Bradbury"talk" 15:08, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

PERM

According user rights can sometimes be a bit challenging to new admins. This is how I accord New Page Reviewer and it's basically the same for the other rights too:

Details

The easiest thing to do is to look in the archives at the ones at PERM that I and various admins have been processing and see the comments we made when asking questions or declining. I check:

  • User talk page to get an idea of communication skill. E.g. I probably don't accord the right to someone who communicates in telephone text style, talks like a 7th grader or a rapper, and says things like 'Hey, bro' (but remember, I'm a retired British professor of English and I'm very old fashioned - and proud of it}
  • User talk page to look for complaints of poor patrolling or reverted CSDs, etc.
  • The edit history at Supercount. I expect to see at least three fairly recent consecutive months of regular editing. Beware of the users who claim to be regular editors or patrollers, those ones are usually exactly the opposite - some haven't patrolled or edited in years, but they don't think we're going to check. It's not unhead of, particularly with NPP and AfC for users to click away and rack up 500 very minor or even blank mainspace edits to reach the required minimum. Anyone who has done only 900 or so edits this year is going to get very close scrutiny. Anyone who has done hardly any edits at all this year, whatever they've done in the past, is not going to get the bit - mainly on the premise that they are not up to date with new policies, etc.
  • AfC: if they've done a fair number of AfC reviews without any problems, that would compensate for a low level of other patrolling. However, there are no logs for AfC reviews.
  • Block log. Not all blocks are of the kind that would prevent me from according the right, but too many recent 3R might.
  • Page Curation log. This is a big plus if they've used Page Curation extensively. Check for blue linked CSDs and find out why they are blue. There are no logs for Twinkle patrols, and from what I understand, there nver will be.
  • Other user rights. If they haven't actually done a lot ot of Recent changes or vandalism patrols but already have a raft of rights, chances are very strong they are just a hat collector.
  • Finally, I apply a lot of gut feeling.
I know I'm not supposed to be, but I'm probably a bit more lenient on the ladies. Hope all this helps. It sounds complicated but it actually never takes more than about three minutes to do for each candidate. In doing so, you'll also get some surprises and you might even catch the occasional sock and serial spammer. Don't worry if you get it wrong occasionally - we can always remove the right easily.

Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:57, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Kudpung, thank you kindly for the above - I'll take your suggestions on board. Perhaps a short essay building upon the points could be linked to from WP:PERM? Looking over them, I think I've been a little on the lenient side with some of the requests, so I'll reign it in a little. Also, although there's no log for AfC reviews, Enterprisey created this tool which you may find helpful. Thanks again, and please feel free to offer advice whenever - I always appreciate and I'm always learning -- samtar talk or stalk 13:14, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi there. Regarding this: [40], protection was lifted about three days ago and the article has had daily spam-attacks since then, see [41]. Should I lodge yet another request for semi-protection? Cheers. Daveosaurus (talk) 04:10, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

December 2016

Hi,

I made a few edits regarding very specific running shoe topics and these edits were 100% neutral in point of view. They were not meant to be spammy or useless in value and were factual edits, adding helpful information.

The wikipedia edit asked for a source so i cited a running website i also write for... but if i don't cite where this information came from then i'm not sure how people will know where the information came from. Also, i genuinely would like to be given credit for adding valuable information when i am taking time out of my day to add these bits of important information to Wikipedia, so i thought the credit made sense.

I'm confused here... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamesrad (talkcontribs) 18:47, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

I took 5 and looked at the kitten ... MANY TIMES and...

Thank you so much for adding protection against continuous intentional vandalism on page of Andre Birleanu but unfortunately was ONLY for one week ... now the mess start it again and am asking for whatever you believe in , but let's say as a XMas present to reinstate protection on the page for one year .. PLEASE !

Thank you ! SANTA :) I'm near nervous breakdown ..they delete valid links , accomplishments , actual news , paparazzi photos, actual work of the person without a clue about the fashion business .

Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact L235 if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 05:19, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

Deletion of Wordsmith

5 members from our label have created a page for Wordsmith just to have it deleted. He does not do these pages on his own and the info is coming from people who have worked with him for years. We try to follow the guidelines by having friends and employees of the company write the pages, but nothing seems to work and there is never a true reason why legit evidence of his prominence in music is denied. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Buzzworthy11 (talkcontribs) 21:49, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

@Buzzworthy11: Please take the time to read our Conflict of Interest guidelines and check our FAQ for organisations/groups -- samtar talk or stalk 21:56, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

I've made some clarifying (well, I think they are anyway) remarks and given him/her a temporary access to the page again. I do have suspicions too, but give a man enough rope and he won't need to go fishing... (or something like that...) Peridon (talk) 18:50, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

I use the Add button on talk pages, and didn't see the above exchange until I'd saved. 8-( Peridon (talk) 18:55, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

I'm not really sure I understand your reason for revoking talk page access. The latest unblock request clearly does not show understanding of Wikipedia's sourcing requirements, sure, but an AGF approach could suggest that could be an honest misunderstanding. It does seem more reasoning, and I'd suggest it perhaps needs further explanation and discussion rather than a gag. So can I ask you to explain your reason or perhaps reconsider? Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 18:18, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Boing, sure - having had a look through the previous unblock requests, the editor didn't seem to be `getting it` and the more recent request continued this trend. I believe I extended a reasonable amount of good faith when considering this option, especially as UTRS is still an option for the editor, but am open to reconsidering the talk page access. Do you think discussions here would lead to a reasonable outcome? -- samtar talk or stalk 18:32, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
Hmm, yes, I do see your point. I have to admit that, no, I think a reasonable outcome from further discussion is probably not likely - perhaps I'm too optimistic. But we have nothing to lose, and I see Peridon has made an offer, so I'm happy to see how that works out. I'll try to suggest a few thoughts myself, though I'm a bit tired now and events might overtake me. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 18:58, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

December 2016

Hi,

So anyone who has a Wikipedia account can successfully publish an Article about someone else, yes?

The reason I ask because there's an Article published some time ago about my good friend and former on-air partner on the radio, Mark Staufer and I wanted to publish a Wikipedia record similar to his.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Staufer

Can you clarify please?

Speedy deletion of International Collection of Microorganisms from Plants (ICMP)

Hello, I noticed that you speedily deleted the page I created at International Collection of Microorganisms from Plants (ICMP), I understand the reasons for doing so. I have rectified the copyright issue by adding a copyleft statement to the page here: http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/resources/collections/icmp/history Regarding notability the collection is just as notable as any in this category: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Culture_collections perhaps more so as it is the largest one in the Southern Hemisphere, I will make this clearer in a re-edit of the text. I trust that this will be sufficient to have the page undeleted. Kind regards, Onco p53 (talk) 21:26, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

My Earlier Edits and My User Name.

Samtar, I was updating national sales figures for the Mustang which were OBVIOUSLY WRONG. Someone put a ghastly overstated figure of 150,000 cars this year sold and usually Ford sells around 60,000 mustangs every year. I went to the National Highway Safety Transportation website where they keep track of yearly US sales of various car models. I verified the Ford numbers I posted but I just did not post the reference correctly as this is my first time editing anything as I am new here. I was trying to help this site maintain it's integrity because someone obvious posting something untrue and it was not caught. Also there is the 150,000 figure and no reference was posted by whomever posted that.

Secondly. my user name is not promotional. I work for the City of Los Angeles. I use my city email for personal things but shhh don't tell anyone. I also registered here with it. I also verified it. I made that my user name because everything else I could think of was taken. So I just thought I would use the suffix of my city email. It is not promotional and it is not a privately owned thing.

Also, I received 3 or 4 messages just like yours. I would appreciate it if Seniors such as yourself would get together and decide who is going to write people and threaten them with corrective measures so I only have to respond to one of you such I have here to explain myself before one of you bounces me because you THOUGHT my user name was promotional for something or you THOUGHT that I was maliciously updating things incorrectly. I am trying to do things correctly and this experience has taught me to practice in the sandbox first as you said and get used to things.

Thank you very much for your input and please tell the other people that thought it necessary to jump on me and threaten to remove my user name.

You might want to log in there - please do continue to read up on how stuff works here, though I do appreciate you are still learning and it's great to see you wanting to practice and improve. You may find it helpful to read up on how to reference things correctly and what we consider to be a reliable source. Your username could appear promotional to some, so it may be worth considering changing it, but that's entirely up to you. Happy new year! -- samtar talk or stalk 21:39, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

On 5 January 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cafe Royal Cocktail Book, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Cafe Royal Cocktail Book contains one of the first recorded recipes for the 20th Century? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Cafe Royal Cocktail Book), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. User:Vtkempi

Sam,

Noticed that you had removed my nomination of Vtkempi (talk · contribs) from the Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism page under the description of "rm declined". I was looking for a bit more clarification on this judgement as I felt I was pretty clear in my description of what Vtkempi has engaged in and how it's unproductive for Wikipedia.

Thanks in advance, GauchoDude (talk) 17:02, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi GauchoDude, in this prior edit I declined the report as stale as the account had not edited in 13 hours. I'll admit I was on the cusp of blocking, but thought given their lack of editing they may have stopped - I do prefer erring on the side of good faith in situations like this. If I see them start again (I've watchlisted the article) or see their name at AIV I will block for an extended time. Apologies for the inconvenience and thank you for your efforts in patrolling the project -- Samtar talk · contribs 18:38, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
Appreciate your prompt response. As I'm sure you've seen Special:Contributions/Vtkempi in making your judgement, he's had sustained attempts to add this information since November 2016, many of which were already deleted. This time of trying to improve the article comes as the subject of the article, his son Jon Kempin, was released from his contract as a professional soccer goalkeeper and now lacks a job as the sourcing (which I added into the article) indicates. In your opinion, what qualifies for an "active" editor to be banned, based on the user's time between edits, edits adding the same plagiarized material, and edits on only the topic in which he has a conflict of interest? Thanks in advance! GauchoDude (talk) 18:47, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
@GauchoDude: It's something which was discussed with me recently - I'm still rather new to this admin stuff, so there's a chance I've got it totally wrong but I see active as edits in the last two to three hours ago. There are of course exceptions to this, such as personal attacks -- Samtar talk · contribs 18:50, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
Similarly, I don't believe I've ever brought it to an admin's attention re: issues facing an article and looking to potentially ban anyone. I admittedly don't understand the process fully, but thought this might warrant a second set of eyes. I wasn't even sure if I had brought it to the right place using the right procedure. I appreciate your responses and I will continue to uphold the integrity of the Jon Kempin article until such a time where it's no longer necessary. @GauchoDude: Haven given this some more thought, I have blocked the account temporarily as it is rather clear this has been ongoing for a while, and disruption is likely to restart when the editor returns. How do I get started with vandalism removal?

Hello. So, I'm trying to get started with removing vandalism on Wikipedia. How do I get started? I've already started a bit with removing vandalism using the recent changes page. Can you give me any tips on identifying vandalism, and removing it effectively? Is there any easier methods than Twinkle and the recent changes page? I would appreciate some tips on identifying what isn't vandalism either. Thanks. XboxGamer22408 (talk) 19:56, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi XboxGamer22408, nice to hear from you again Have you had a look at CVUA? After you've got the rollback permission you will be able to use Huggle to combat vandalism. Back in the day I used to patrol recent changes - have you enabled ORES, as this will highlight vandalism. If you've not, go to "beta" (up at the top near "Log out") then then check "ORES" - this will allow you to view this page which shows potentially damaging edits -- Samtar talk · contribs 20:19, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll take a look at the CVUA. I just enabled ORES. I'm just getting more active on Wikipedia. I feel like I might be starting to become a Wikipediholic! XboxGamer22408 (talk) 20:36, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Chet Kamal Parkash

Hey Samtar I just wanted to drop a line and let you know I bumped up the PP on Chet Kamal Parkash to admin required from extended confirmed user. For some unknown reason extended confirmed seems to be the default when salting deleted pages. If you set it at that level deliberately feel free to revert me. -Ad Orientem (talk) 20:56, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Huh, good call Ad Orientem! I might go poke one of the devs about that.. thanks for fixing it :) -- Samtar talk · contribs 20:57, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
Oh jeez they've all been ECP create protected since the beginning of this year... -- Samtar talk · contribs 21:00, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
That's annoying. I don't salt articles casually but when I do, it's because they need to be locked down. I've already had to go back and fix a few of mine. -Ad Orientem (talk) 21:13, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
@Ad Orientem: well after realising that I went and asked a couple of techy admins - apparently an RfC found consensus to use ECP for create protection, and using the philosophy of least protection it was decided that ECP should be the Twinkle default. The RfC is here -- Samtar talk · contribs 21:16, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

No1dead

Did you really check Special:Contributions/No1dead? Is there any useful contribution from this user than requesting fake page protection, did this childish thing, disruptive "anime" edits on Seinfeld article and listed it on this anime list? Hi Samtar, Thank you very much for your answer. Please don't worry - I did it ALL - all references, Sources, Links, Pictures, authorisation for the pictures - it's ready! But: I just would like to show it to you for one final check before putting it in the wikiworld... Where can I do this, just to show, not so save... Please - which kind of page (not this one, it's for talk only)? And the sandbox neither ...I am only elaborationg there, without saving...so WHERE can I show it to you? I AM So SORRY FOR MY HUMBLE STEPS , but I could not find out upt to now how to put my final version in the sandbox to show it to you....without risking, that it is automatically saved as an edit...Pas de chat (talk) 18:00, 6 January 2017 (UTC) Thanks a lot in advance Pas de chat (talk) 15:21, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Samtar, Thank you very much - but I am really surprized...why should more references and citations are necessary? And if they were, why did not you tell me....before....? I am sorry for my misunderstandings, but this is the complete translation of the German article, so from there nothing could be added, and the German version is highly appreciated!! in Wiki and linked internally a lot. If I compaire with other edits it is obviously a much higher category concerning all levels... You wants more...? The List of references, articles and catalogues is long.... What could you suggest to me? Pas de chat (talk) 11:09, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Samtar, I added some references and two citations in English - what else can I do?... More citations from German catalogues - but only Germans would understand... and there is already the German aricle. There are so many sources, everybody can read it everywhere... why should this not be enough...? Could you please help me one more time? Hi Pas de chat, some other editors have added those tags - they don't necessarily mean the article is bad, just that some more references could be added -- Samtar talk · contribs 16:28, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Ok - but how many....I just added a lot and can add some more... Can you stop that "game" (for me not logical...) Pas de chat (talk) 16:32, 8 January 2017 (UTC)Or do I have to contact other editors?

Hi Samtar, I added quite more...please have a look, can you now give green light and delete these tags...? PLEASE...? WHO, IF NOT YOU?? thank youPas de chat (talk) 21:16, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @Pas de chat: I have removed tags from areas which have now been sourced. Please bear in mind Sam is busy with off-wiki matters so he will not be able to reply unless he gets a spare moment, when this will happen, I don't know, as I don't know Sam personally. Blocked for edits to WP:Sandbox?

Did you really block someone for making 7 edits to the sandbox? I do not see anything disruptive about those edits. There were no attacks, no BLP violations nothing disruptive. The only disruptive thing going on was the edit summaries by Cyrus noto3at bulaga. They were experimenting in an area where they are allowed to experiment. I am unblocking per your edit notice. - GB fan 13:31, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

@GB fan: Thank you for the note - you're completely right, that was a crap block on my behalf and I will apologise to the IP. At the time I blocked to prevent the edit war continuing, and blocked the IP for disruptively re-adding multiple transclusions - I see now if anyone should have been blocked in that incident it was Cyrus noto3at bulaga -- Samtar talk · contribs 13:40, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
The only reason I saw this was that Cyrus noto3at bulaga left a note on my talk page asking about becoming an admin and I was reviewing their edits and saw that the IP was blocked and looked into it. I have blocked before for bad reasons also and have been told you shouldn't have done that. It is a learning experience and I bet you won't do it again. - GB fan 13:56, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

Unblock request on hold

There is an unblock request at User talk:Edelweiss Broking Limited, for a spam username block that you placed. If what the editor says is to be believed, it is a case of the remarkably common happening of a new editor using the name of the article he or she intends to create as a username, rather than an actual COI editor. Looking at the editing of that account and of its (admitted) sockpuppet Piyushpanc, that seems likely to be true. Also, the one edit that the account made before the block (here) was not blatantly promotional. I am therefore inclined to unblock the editor. Do you have any opinion on the matter? The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 08:29, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

@JamesBWatson: given the reasoning supplied in their unblock request, I wholly agree with your inclination to unblock - one thing to note is I believe you may have muddled up the parameters when placing the unblock request on hold! -- Samtar talk · contribs 08:58, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I shall go ahead and unblock. As for the mistake in placing the unblock request on hold, you are, of course perfectly right. That was a very careless mistake, and I have slapped myself on the wrist for it. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 09:29, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

CheckUser

Hi, Samtar! If you remember, I was going for adminship some time ago. One of the reasons was the sock puppet investigations. I learned, that if you get the CheckUser right, you can investigate sock puppets, but I did not find a page, where you could request for them. Can you help? - FriyMan talk 13:11, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Hi FriyMan. The short answer is, you can't. Please see WP:CHK for what the role involves and how it is managed. You knowe appreciate the efforts you are making on our behalf- but I think it's been suggested that you focus on editing the encyclopaedia and building up your experience, rather than aiming for positions within the beurocracy. Checkusers, to briefly answer your question, are some of the most trustworthy editors the community has- even more, perhaps, than mere admins (pace Samtar, of course...). Good luck with your editing! Bot creation help.

On your user page, you said, that you can mentor fellow programmers. Could you please help me set up a pywikibot on the PAWS? FriyMan talk 14:34, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) By far and away the easiest way to get into bot writing is to grab a Raspberry Pi, install the development stack using apt-get, download the Pywikibot source, compile it, and off you go. Getting used to the tarball / make / install cycle is a useful skill to have, that will move you closer to a professional developer. You can test your programming skills with readonly stuff - it's only when you need to write / edit pages that you need to prove you bot is not going to be disruptive. Wikipedia:Using AWB with 2FA

Hi, I saw Wikipedia:Using AWB with 2FA some time ago. One thing not mentioned on the page is that if you create the account will it still have access to the admin functions of AWB? I needed to move 100+ pages after an MfD but without redirects. I just noticed that the move edit does not say AWB but the next edit does. What I did was to log out of 2FA, run AWB, then restore the 2FA. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 00:08, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

@CambridgeBayWeather: Apologies for not getting back to you sooner - you should be able to grant the rights Create, edit, and move pages and Delete pages, revisions, and log entries and AWB will then be able to move without leaving a redirect behind.. To see/change the grants navigate to Special:BotPasswords and select the `bot` - you may wish to enable other "admin functions". Hope this helps -- Samtar talk · contribs 18:23, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. No worries I wasn't around anyway. At the moment I don't have a working Windows and I only ever got AWB working in Linux once. So until I get it working again I can only use AWB at work. And I'm off till Friday. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 15:28, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

Extended confirmed!

Hello Samtar, you had refused my request, you told me to (read the comment by xaosflux as it contains some useful advice). He had told me that (should you have edits to pages that are not covered under arbitration sanctions) that's what I did! and then (After you have avoided the restricted topics and amass more edits) there are 895 live edits excluding user sandbox of 1,390 live edits as of now. As per-talk there were 521 live edits excluding user sandbox (of 1016 live edits).--Marlo Jonesa (talk) 17:00, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Okay - my advice is still the same. Reflect on those comments (and comments by other admins at that request) and request the right again in the future. Frankly, having looked over the Enforcement again, it appears you are rushing in regards to Extended Confirmed, and the fact you requested the right five days after having it previously denied doesn't bode well - slow down, continue to edit constructively in the mainspace and please do request the right again (perhaps in a month or so?). Deletion of "Alonzo Church Award" page

Dear Samtar,

I created yesterday the wikipedia entry "Alonzo Church Award". This entry consisted of an introductory text that I more or less took from the ACM SIGLOG homepage, modulo some changes. However, the table with awardees was new. In response to the copyright strike, I rewrote the text and also gave notice about that, as required. However, the page was still deleted and I am wondering why that is. Would you mind explaining that?

Best, Henning — Preceding unsigned comment added by H.basold (talkcontribs) 07:41, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

As explained in the deletion rationale, the article was a copyright violation -- Samtar talk · contribs 09:42, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

Dear Samtar,

As I said, I wrote a new text, which contains even more information than the old one. Moreover, I responded to the notification, just as required. So I would have expected to be at least contacted before the page is taken down. In fact, the entry copyright violation that you quote says: "If you suspect a copyright violation but are uncertain if the content is copyrighted or whether the external site is copying from Wikipedia, you should at least bring up the issue on that page's discussion page, if it is active."

Best H.basold (talk) 10:24, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

but are uncertain - I wasn't uncertain, so I deleted the content. If you've now got the appropriate licence on the content you can request undeletion or re-create the article -- Samtar talk · contribs 10:46, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello

Can you help me in forwarding the following request to User:JamesBWatson.

Dear, JamesBWatson Can you create an article on Statistical Machine Learning with inclusion of LDA and QDA, PCA, clustering methods, cross-validation, bootstrap, linear model selection and regularisation, modelling with regression splines and smoothing splines, tree-based methods, support vector machines, etc. Kindly also maake the the educational language as non-technical as possible with good redirects to important concepts.

Samtar, if you could do it would be noice of you.45.249.239.44 (talk) 08:11, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Why do you ask for me to do this? I know next to nothing about Statistical Machine Learning, and I don't even know what LDA, QDA, and PCA stand for. If you do know about the topic, why don't you create an account and create the article yourself? Or perhaps better still create a draft for the article and submit it for review by an experienced editor, which yo can do with or without an account. Irene

When she said "the dumb users" she's probably referring to the ones she mentioned, not the whole community. I know I might be coming off as a bit insensitive, but if I see a personal attack, especially directed at me, I will redact it. I've been abused on online forums before and I'm not tolerating it on Wikipedia, where I feel I should be able to contribute without getting attacked. Linguisttalk|contribs 13:07, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

@Linguist111: I see - please don't for a moment think I accept what Irene was saying as being anywhere near reasonable and appropriate, just that when people are irritated they say and do things which they later regret. Unfortunately they have continued after a stern warning, so I have revoked talk page access. Please feel free to contact me directly if you ever require assistance, especially related to harassment - I won't tolerate it on Wikipedia -- Samtar talk · contribs 13:09, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello TheresNoTime/old,
A HUGE backlog

We now have 804 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

The fight continues.....

Hello sire. We interacted over at Fortuna's Page. You had asked me to remind you about getting rollback once i do a bit more anti vandal work. And thats exactly what I've been upto. Once again i run into the problem of not being able to use dedicated tools like Stiki, Huggle or igloo. Rollback would enable me to use these and be more effective. My niche of interest is in Indian articles which face their fair share of vandals. I try to bring the fight to the vandals here. Hope I'm worthy now! Arkhaminsanity (talk) 17:33, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

@Arkhaminsanity: Hi there - thanks for dropping by! I've had a quick look through your contributions and you are so very close to having rollback granted. The guidelines suggest 200 mainspace edits and this tool shows you have 102 - if you make a few more mainspace edits (lets say, 160 total?) I will give them a proper review and grant rollback if it's all looking good. Good luck, and talk soon! -- Samtar talk · contribs 19:30, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

No problem, I think I confused my total edits with mainspace edits. Still, I will keep the flamne of the fight burning even without rollback till my edit count is appropriate. Thank you for being supportive. Arkhaminsanity (talk) 04:51, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Review of my work!

I have the required number of edits now(170+). Kindly go over my contribs. I've focused on a lot of anti-promotional work. Backlog drive—NPP

I'm ambivalent toward contests, but I do have a suggestion on quantity v. quality (I thought I'd put it here on your tp to avoid clogging up the start of discussion of your idea).

  1. A NPPer can self-nominate one patrol they consider the best they've done to that point in the contest.
  2. A live list of the nominations will be displayed during the contest.
  3. An entrant may change their nomination during the contest.

I think this would encourage competition for the best work, show good examples for emulation, encourage additional patrols in to stay ahead of the completion. This would be more work than a straight numbers win, but I think it'd have better results and attract more attention, otherwise it'd be a magnet for sloppy patrols and very long patrolling session. — User:Neonorange (Phil) 06:05, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

@Neonorange: That's a good idea! There will definitely have to be some balance between getting the backlog down in a quick yet quality controlled manner and being able to reward editors who take part -- Samtar talk · contribs 10:46, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

At least can you mention what are the promotional features found in that article. How can you say it is poorly referenced?I have mentioned all references that i can pick in Internet. If everything must be referenced then check for other article . Think practically. You are doing this intentionally. Who are you to tell me to change my attitude. You must change your attitude. You haven't produced me proper reasons of deleting my article. Don't speak until you give me proof on my article that it was promotional Edson Frainlar (talk) 12:55, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

@Ranjana21: Hi there, thanks for getting in contact! I know it must be frustrating to have your article deleted, but thank you for contacting me in a polite and civil manner - I deleted your article for two reasons. Firstly, it lacked a credible claim of significance - this might sound confusing, but the link will help explain. Secondly, and I appreciate your above explanation that the article was not for promotion, it sounded a bit too promotional. So, what can you do? I'd recommend following the instructions at the Article Wizard and creating a draft which will be reviewed by an experienced editor. Potential edit filter?

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Catcreekcitycouncil

One of the tactics this user has taken to is creating sleepers in advanced, then on the day they use them, rapidly undoing themselves on an unprotected article to gain autoconfirmed. ACTRIAL

Hi, Further to the conversation last night, do you think consensus is clear enough to use the blacklist to enable an ACTRIAL-esque scheme? Thanks :) -DrStrauss talk 10:44, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

@DrStrauss: Which consensus? Any current discussions such as on the Village Pump is not widespread or specific enough to enable the blacklist (in my humble opinion) - especially as such a move would be somewhat against a previous WMF decision -- Samtar talk · contribs 10:55, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
Hmm, if we're thinking of doing it without the WMF an RfC would be inappropriate but it still requires a more "formal" (i.e. support/oppose) community discussion I guess. Where should this take place? Thanks, DrStrauss talk 10:57, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
@DrStrauss: I still believe the proposal Village Pump is the correct place, but I would recommend having a highly-defined RfC (as in, Should we do X?) and ensuring it is widely advertised. I'm worried that no matter how well defined the RfC is you'll still see topic-stretching discussions taking place which ultimately will end up with the RfC getting close and no action being taken.. -- Samtar talk · contribs 11:01, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)DrStrauss - the WMF did not reject it because it asked for 6 months. I and others have asked you many times to read up on the background of ACTRIAL - and then get a team to work on it. The future of NPP and AfC

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. The coordinators will do their best for for the advancement of the improvement of NPP and AfC and generally keep tracks on the development of those things. Coordinators have no additional or special user benefits, but they will be 'go to' people and will try to keep discussions in the right places. This very much involves this project too, especially with growing renewed interest around the site about what WP:ACTRIAL was all about.

We now have 804 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.

Strange article history

Hello Samtar,

can you tell me, what happened here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Claudia_Rosiny&action=history

Why were there versions of your sandbox in someone else's user namespace? I just don't understand.

Kindest regards, --Drahreg01 (talk) 22:50, 18 February 2017 (UTC)

Well I've been scratching my head over this one for a little while - I did help Pas De Chat previously (as seen here) so I'm guessing some mixture of page moves and wikipixies has somehow merged some history together.. As we can see from this revision of Claudia Rosiny this was my initial copyediting of Bruno Kurz from User:Samtar/pasdechat. My head hurts -- Samtar talk · contribs 10:14, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

Stats

Sam I really, really, really need those stats now. I've been asking around the site since October for them. I need them more than ever now before DrStrauss makes an error in his enthusiasm to run a premature RfC on ACTRIAL. If you haven't got time or don't know how, I'll understand, but please let me know. Cheers, Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:03, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

@Kudpung: Hi Kudpung, I understand it's pretty urgent - I'll try to get stuck into it again by this weekend. I've left some notes at the request. If I find this is beyond my SQL-fu I'll make sure it gets passed on to someone and not abandoned. The wonderful people in the #wikipedia-analytics connect IRC channel helped me with a very complex query recently so I may be able to convince them to take a look at this too -- Samtar talk · contribs 12:13, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
@Kudpung: I'm so sorry, have I messed it up? DrStrauss talk 12:16, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
I would be most grateful if you could,Sam, because if DrStrauss has his way, ACTRIAL will never happen and the other other software improvements I'm negotiating for with the VP of the WMF will be swept under the carpet again and I'll have them all laughing in my face for my 6 years of efforts. I'm verging on retiring from Wikipedia over this. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:20, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Kudpung, I'm not "having my way" - I'd like ACTRIAL to happen and maybe I went the wrong way with it. What are your other software proposals? DrStrauss talk 12:28, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) @DrStrauss: Just an non-involved comment (-too technical for me to understand!) but I think the unspoken advice here is- could you just hang fire with whatever it is you are keen to do? Apparently, time will reap rewards, and we will all get a better result by waiting. More haste, less speed eh! Good luck, ladies and gentlemen. Bad rollback grant?

Hi there, can you please offer an explanation for this? Assuming you actually conducted a review of the user, you surely would have noticed:

  • They are fairly inexperienced.
  • They just became active one month ago.
  • They didn't meet the bare minimum requirement of 200 mainspace edits.
  • They had virtually no substantive history of anti-vandalism work (only a few reverts in total).
  • They never claimed to be involved in anti-vandalism work, nor did they claim to actually have any need for the tool—they openly stated that it was meant to be a stepping stone in order to acquire a different user right, that they do not even qualify for. This is a wholly invalid reason for requesting permissions.

Since being granted this tool, this user has gone on a rollback spree. Most reverts are vandalism, but some border on misuse and make me doubt whether this user even knows when to not use rollback: [92][93] I would be inclined to revoke based on all of this. Swarm 17:55, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

@Swarm: Hi, thanks for the message - I'll preface with you're more than welcome to revoke rollback for this editor. I do conduct a review of editors before granting rights, but clearly I'm way too lax. I'm of the opinion that rights such as rollback, which with the advent of Twinkle's rollback is no great deal, should be granted to competent editors with clue, experience and desire to learn. As you've stated above, my cursory review was evidently lacking and I came to the wrong conclusion about the editor. This error has allowed an editor to cause damage with a right I had granted - and for that I apologise and take full responsibility. Perhaps I'll keep away from PERM in the future -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 19:44, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:National Mario Day.png

Thanks for uploading File:National Mario Day.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Majora (talk) 21:26, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi,

I'd to request a self-block as I'm spending too much time on WP and need to get stuff done for a temporary period (further explained on IRC). I've tried enforcer but I just change my PC time to circumvent it.

The conditions I'd like are as follows:

  • Don't let me talk you out of it

Thanks,

Two questions: 1. Why? and 2. Why can't I see your old pages in the history of the now-disambiguation? UNSC Luke 1021 (talk) 23:24, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
A mixture of disliking my current username and off-wiki harassment which my username didn't exactly help to prevent. I've discussed the link (and been asked to put redirects in) so the fact I did it is rather moot now. I'm not sure what you mean by the second part of your question - everything should be attributed to me properly, and in the rename subpages were moved to this (for example, User:There'sNoTime/about). I've elected to not link any of these subpages purely because I can't be bothered to and I prefer my user page nice and blank. They can be found here -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 08:27, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
When I ask question II, I mean when you go to the page User:Samtar (the disambiguation, not what it redirects to) and go into the history your old user page doesn't show up; there's only one recorded edit. I was just unsure. As for the name change, I hope the off-wiki harassment stops because of this. UNSC Luke 1021 (talk) 11:45, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Cowplain Community School, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Michael East. ShakespeareFan00 categories

User:ShakespeareFan00/furme.js is in seven categories (viz. Category:Incomplete file renaming requests, Category:Images in non-image formats, Category:Images with coins to indicate scale, Category:Images which should be in PNG format, Category:Wikipedia images using freedom of panorama, Category:Wikipedia files requiring renaming, and Category:Images for cleanup without reasons) that it should not be. I would have raised the matter with ShakespeareFan00, but I thought maybe we could remedy it without bothering them during their self-requested block, which you implemented for them. Even if I could edit the page, which I can't as a non-administrator, I can't quite discern which part is causing the problem. If you aren't able to either, perhaps simply blanking it would suffice? IP blocks

Hey,

I'm just a bit curious as to why you never seem to use the {{school block}} template when blocking IP addresses, and instead use the {{anonblock}} template... For example, [112] and [113] - the block logs in these IP addresses indicate that they have been school-blocked in the past. Also, both of these IP's are confirmed to be school IP addresses, see [114] and [115]. I know that the blocks say "Likely a school based on behavioral evidence", but I would think that using the {{school block}} template would be more accurate here...

No big deal, just a bit curious, that's all... 2601:1C0:4401:F360:B8DD:17E3:BAAB:24AB (talk) 03:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Hadn't noticed that - in Twinkle (which does all my heavy lifting in terms of templates) selecting the preset "anonblock - likely a school" applies {{anonblock}}. Having had a dig around, I see I can pick a different template for "likely a school", so I'll try to remember to do that in the future -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 21:41, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Good to know. I don't really know much about Twinkle, so I can't really understand what you mean by "selecting the preset", but it looks like, for example, you've placed a school block template on this IP address' talkpage, but you still used the anonblock template in the block log; so maybe that's what the "preset" means...? Anyhow, the only thing that really matters is that it helps to quell the vandalism, so thanks! :-) 2601:1C0:4401:F360:B8DD:17E3:BAAB:24AB (talk) 22:17, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
I think the IP is saying, if it's definitely a school IP then use the school preset which adds a schoolblock template. What I would say is if it's not definitely a school, but is likely one, then anonblock is appropriate. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:29, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Hey There'sNoTime, just noticed that the user you blocked for three hours yesterday, Drake1986, has now taken to blanking thousands of bytes of data from Drake (musician) and a sizable amount from Rick Ross (which were both reverted/treated as vandalism) with next to no explanation. I'm not sure if this user is turning out to be very productive here, unfortunately... not sure what can be done, just letting you know. Ss112 11:40, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

@Ss112: Well I was rather clear to them, and they didn't bother to respond to my block message so I've gone ahead and blocked for one week as this behaviour is just going to continue. Hopefully this significantly longer block forces them to start talking to us, otherwise they're just not here to build an encyclopedia and will be blocked indef as such -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 11:44, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

I would firstly like to acknowledge your efforts in diffusing the edit war that was occurring at the page above. It was admirable (hence the barnstar), and demonstrated skills that I, a novice editor, aspire to. Unfortunately, I am not here to report on positive news. While Vivvt has heeded your advice and stepped away from the article, User:Reddyvi has sadly failed to. While I cannot comment on the nature (disruptive or not) of his edits on the main article, he has wiped the talk page of all material relating to the edit war, including discussions which do not involve him, and continued to attack Vivvt who has since left the article alone. I do not know how to proceed, as I lack experience in these issues. I have asked him nicely to revert while applying WP:AGF (as previous efforts to revert have failed), but am pessimistic as to whether they will succeed. That is why I am asking you, an editor who is adept at diffusing such scenarios, to assist and guide me in this effort. Given its nominations at WP:ITNC, time is of the perogative, and this issue is becoming tedious. I also want to avoid being accused of edit warring, as it is my intention to end the conflict, not exacerbate it. What advice would you (pardon the atrocious pun) administer? Thanks in advance - Stormy clouds (talk) 17:55, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

@Stormy clouds: It's a tough little situation going on there, and whilst at the moment it seems(?) to have quieted down, it's likely to flare up again. Your actions were entirely correct, and I can see the sections were restored You note that this may be time sensitive with the ITNC nomination, but I've often found that any sort of haste on Wikipedia causes more issues than it solves - taking things slow, realising this is only a website and trying to be civil with everyone is pretty much the only thing you can do in situations like this. You might note that I and other admins have taken a step back from what is going on, and you may find yourself having to do that too - it can help for a number of reasons, as it allows people to either try to work things out or start again and show they have no intention of solving the dispute. Lastly, in my opinion, all editors on Wikipedia are novices in some regards - I for example am rather weak in several areas of administrator work, as well as having little experience in article creation. Wikipedia is not something anyone gets "good at", they just end up understanding the polices well and knowing when to offer advice. Good luck with your editing here, and keep up the great work! My talk page is always open -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 11:44, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
@There'sNoTime: - Thanks for the response. I have closed the WP:ITNC nom, so time is no longer an issue. Unconscionably? Goodness no, when I'm rude it's a conscious and rather colourful decision ;) -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 11:26, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

Warning User:BlaccCrab

Hi There'sNoTime. I saw you commented at the WP:AN thread started by BlaccCrab on me. However, I pointed out there that BlaccCrab was previously blocked for disruptive editing at my talk page, which he also did yesterday. I first told the previous blocking admin, Ritchie333, but they appear to now be confused about who did what and almost appear to be excusing the same actions they blocked BlaccCrab for in November of last year, and I'm confused as to why. It appears that BlaccCrab feels bold enough to revert me on my own talk page, which I never do to another editor, and I don't understand how he has not been warned about it. Would you please be able to issue a warning for this? An admin's word holds more sway than my own request that he not post at my talk page, which he clearly disregarded. Thank you. Ss112 12:50, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

I can see a number of other editors and admins have gotten involved in this so I'll abstain from continuing any involvement - too many cooks -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 09:23, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi,

Did you mean to perform a shorter block on this IP, given that the last one was for two months (so I would have guessed that the next one be for three months)? Cheers. 2601:1C0:102:29D8:CC06:F9E1:52DD:1E95 (talk) 11:18, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

NSEL Case

Hi There'sNoTime, I can understand why you have blocked the page. The edit war was going nowhere. Unfortunately, my attempts to revise the page to a neutral version with a balanced outlook that a page of public interest should associate with were getting lost to edit warring. This despite one of the warring handles CMshah was already blocked earlier from editing this page. The other handle NimrodIndia has also been been previously warned. Im not sure if they have an agenda but surely if you look at their versions, it does come across as if neutrality is clearly not been given a thought. I’m surprised at the extent to which this has gone given that some talk page comments have been undone. I’ll appreciate your guidance in restoring this page to a balanced, clean version. And if in any way I can validate my bona fide intent or if anywhere I have gone wrong. Thank you Anrdshr (talk) 12:29, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

@Anrdshr: Thanks for getting in contact - please go to the article's talk page and submit an edit request detailing why your version should be restored. I won't be making any restorations of any version unless there is some consensus on the matter. I don't endorse the version it is currently "locked", it just happened to be the one present when I clicked the button - it's almost always the The Wrong Version -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 12:33, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

Why my request to rename the username from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:SaschArt was rejected ? If it was true that we used our username to advertise/spam why you not rename or delete the name?

Do not advertise with our name and do not dirty our name!

You made a legal threat and thus I revoked your talk page access. I'm also blocking this IP as ban evasion. See WP:UTRS on how to get unblocked -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 14:33, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) @5.12.203.231 That is dangerously close to a legal threat. Please desist. Margarita Andreeva hoax restored

Hi There'sNoTime, I write to you as Снежная ночь is active again and you are familiar with the case. He/she restored the article, but now the details changed a bit. The Lada claim is now gone and he kept the more plausible opera singer bit, although is still a ridiculous hoax if you ask me. He/she tried to pass as a legitimate source a piece written in the free web hosting sitebuilder.com. I strongly suspect he/she wrote it, so the details can change as he/she reads this, but Lada isn't even mentioned in the version I read, "Andreeva" supposedly made money thanks to her talent, "Lada" shares had nothing to do with that this time (archived version). He/she has a strong interest on introducing this hoax to Wikipedia, I don't know why, maybe he/she has a strong attachment to the real person behind the picture he/she keeps adding. In any case, he/she is WP:NOTHERE. I would like some advice on this case, as he/she seems an expert on Wikipedia mechanics and he/she is very capable of gaming the system. --Urbanoc (talk) 06:29, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Could you have a look?

Hi, an IP keeps adding un-sourced material to the article Hammad Miah I don't want to keep undoing it as it will get into an edit war and I have no wish to get involved in one, I have warned them on their talk page, could you possibly have a look? Thanks --MJ500 Fancy a coffee? 11:14, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Off-topic tip: The reason the link didn't work was that you formatted it [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hammad_Miah&action=history|to this article] instead of [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hammad_Miah&action=history to this article] (URLs use a space before the custom text, whereas internal links use a vertical bar, | <-- that character). I know I've made that mistake quite a few times. I also see that you managed to make that custom signature. Nice! TompaDompa (talk) 11:27, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

I've reverted and given them a final warning - good job not getting into an edit war :) -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 12:09, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Now a registered account has recently undone your edit with the exact same information as the IP, not sure what's going on. MJ500 Fancy a coffee? 18:49, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Hi MJ500. Out of the idle curiousity for which I am famed, why does that particular tournament need sourcing when that entire section is ensourced? Incidentally, sources seem to exist, try [122], [123], [124], for example. See WP:PRESERVE. (In-off-the-cushion comment: He's already mentioned in our 2017 Riga Masters article too.) Cheers! — O Fortuna semper crescis, aut decrescis 10:09, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

Thanks...

...for semi-protecting List of current ships of the United States Navy. However, the template expires in a month and it is almost a certainty that the problems will continue after that. It seems that a little friend of ours has been causing all kinds of disruption on this page over the last 7 or 8 months and using up to 30 different IP addresses to do so. They are all 182.130.*.*, which is based in Chengdu City. in the Sichuan province of China. A look at the entries and edit histories shows this is likely the same person the various talk pages of these IP accounts show many, many warnings and even multiple blocks, and these should be more cumulative than they are.

Could this protection be extended for a longer period, or even made permanent? Also, any advice on how to best deal with this person? Thanks - theWOLFchild 23:22, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

@Thewolfchild: Hmm, we could definitely look at a longer term protection or even a range block (though, it's likely 182.130.0.0/16 is going to have way too much collateral) - we could also consider the use of an edit filter if there is some pattern we could figure out privately. As for dealing with them, consider the three revert rule and revert, warn, report - if AIV is being slow consider popping onto #wikipedia-en connect and using the !admin stalkword to get someone's attention sharpish -- There'sNoTime (to explain)

Anthony Bailey

Whilst I am new to Wikipedia and I did read up the various points before I made my changes to the above article. I do feel They are relevant and maintain The high standards expected on Wikipedia. So in the absence of any reply from The author to the individual changes made to the article I'm surprised that you have sore fit to protect the article at the request of the author of the quesrionable Text. Could you kindly advise me what I need to do so that the wider Wikipedia community can consider what I've made and why to enhance this article. I would Also like to understand why you have acted too in this way as again I have only acted to enhance an article rather than to vandalise it as I'm wrongly accused of. I Appreciate your understanding. Wonderground (talk) 14:56, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

@Wonderground: Firstly, welcome to Wikipedia - secondly, I responded to your concerns at the ANI thread but will repeat them here for clarity; "My decision to protect the article isn't anything against yourself personally - you can use a edit request on the article's talk page to request a change be made". If you have a quick look at that link you can see how to request a change be made - alternatively you can use our dispute resolution processes to get a wider community input. As an administrator, I make choices which not everyone is going to agree with - to protect an article from non-confirmed editors is something I don't like doing, and it was only done to prevent disruption. Also, your account is nearly confirmed (your account needs to be four days old and have made at least 10 edits) so you will shortly be able to edit the article directly -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 15:02, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

Can you please have a quiet word

Sorry to bring this up again, but can you please have a word with a certain editor who you have spoken to before. I think this diff is potentially the basis of a problematic beginning if it is not nipped before it develops. Referring to other users motives as 'Islamaphobic', 'absurdist POV', and ascribing it as nothing more than 'don't like', is particularly unhelpful. This kind of language and associated commenting, is not helpful. The discussions have become very civil and constructive. It is best to try and keep discussions that way. I also think the user is missing the point of Wikipedia with the line 'white-washing/rose-colored glass which is trying to convince WP that islamic terrorism is not happening'. No user as fat as I can tell is going anywhere near those sentiments, and the user is forgetting this is an encyclopedia, and not a news site, or a historical/political book for publication. Can you please have a gentle word to prevent this getting out of hand, I do not want to comment directly as that could just inflame the situation. Sport and politics (talk) 09:10, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

@Sport and politics: I'll keep a close eye, I agree the tone of the comment is a little terse, and everyone is being rather civil so it would be a shame to see it become heated again.. -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 10:40, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

Edit warring at Battle of Ia Drang

I am happy to report to you that your advice in handling the edit war at the Battle of Ia Drang did work: I flagged the editor in question; he responded by admitting one of his mistake; I further explained to him that he erred likewise in his other bogus 'dubious' and 'synthesis' tagging; he hasn't responded to this and it appears to be a silent consensus. I revert the remaining bogus tags of his. Let's hope he does not resume an edit war. I will alert you if he does. Thanks for referring me to WP:BRD.Tnguyen4321 (talk) 13:07, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

IP Block evader

Hi and thanks for taking care of 92.22.168.155. Can I ask you to revdel (RD1) the additions he made and then removed today. They're technically unattributed copyvios, even from other WP articles, so RD1 would apply. I'm not sure why he's doing that, so this would also cover DENY. Thanks! CrowCaw 16:39, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Sock question

A while ago you blocked Dal8986 for (among other things) socking. I'm not familiar with this sock drawer; are MJF1986 and 95.160.154.117 part of it (see their deleted edits)? Worth filing a centralized SPI? Is it worth salting the other variants of the article-title that that IP worked on? DMacks (talk) 08:47, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

@DMacks: Apologies for the late reply - MJF1986 is a sock as far as I'm concerned, and 95.160.154.117 is related. I think an SPI might be useful here, and salting would be helpful until they evade it again -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 07:13, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

List of video game emulators

Hello, you may remember that an edit war was starting earlier at List of video game emulators; the same thing is happening yet again, and instigated by the same editor.

User:KAMiKAZOW remains adamant that none of the entries of this list need to be notable in any way, and is deliberately re-adding non-notable entries. WP:BRD is not working here, as KAMiKAZOW is refusing to hold discussion; he is deliberately ignoring sections of WP:LISTN which establish that some lists must be culled to adhere to Wikipedia's notability guidelines. After adding a [citation needed] to one of the entries he re-added and leaving a note on his talk page that he should attempt to find a reference, he blanked his talk page and removed my citation tag with his only explanation being "citations aren't needed".

It is becoming very difficult to clean this article up to Wikipedia's notability standards when this user is aggressively reverting any removals from the list without allowing meaningful discourse afterwards. Could you please step in once more and offer guidance/judgement? FlotillaFlotsam (talk) 19:02, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
