Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 August. It will be on all wikis from 8 August (calendar).
Problems
- A change in RelatedArticles extension accidentally enabled it for everyone, not just for mobile users. This has been fixed. [1][2]
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 7 August at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Today everyone can see IP addresses if someone edits without an account. In the future this could be more hidden. This is to protect unregistered editors so fewer can see their IP address. This would only happen after we make sure the tools for vandal fighting can still be effective. You can read more and comment.

Scarlett Johansson lead image
Hi, I started a discussion regarding the lead image of the page. I would like to hear your opinion and sorry for the bold edit that I made before. --Mazewaxie (talk • contribs) 16:13, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Mazewaxie, Many thanks for starting a discussion, I apologise if my edit summary was overtly rude however I find it extremely frustrating when people ignore hidden comments and do exactly what the comment says not to do,
- Your actions go a long way in my book, Many thanks for peacefully resolving this (as opposed to edit warring) :),
- Happy editing, –Davey2010Talk 16:19, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

- No worries, Le moulin de la sorcière, Happy editing .... or whatever it is we do over there :). –Davey2010Talk 20:46, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- The previous file I changed to the article has a better frame, that’s why I changed it, can you retrieve them at the article...--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 20:53, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Le moulin de la sorcière, What do you mean by a "better frame" ? I can't see any differences between the images. –Davey2010Talk 21:09, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- I mean the space around, currently there’s too much blank space upper the file.--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 21:13, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- The new file is more centered, that’s why I nominated the previous file for deletion--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 21:15, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- I changed it I don’t received answer.--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 21:38, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Le moulin de la sorcière, Sorry real life called, I see what you mean, You can just crop the image the other editor uploaded, If you're only cropping white space out then you can overwrite it :), Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:46, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- OK but maybe you should review the last version of file you uploaded, when I watch the article in mobile version, there is not enough space left and right, which hides a bit the left and right end of the file. I think it does the same problem when we watch the article on a PC. Thanks.--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 22:25, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- I changed it I don’t received answer.--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 21:38, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- Finally I think it will be OK.--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 22:38, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- Le moulin de la sorcière I see what you mean, I'll have a play around either later or tomorrow as it's 23:50 here in the UK, Please don't reinsert the other logo as I'll have no choice but to report you to WP:Edit warring noticeboard, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:54, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- It's OK! I nominated to deletion the file that I downloaded, I didn't want to make an edit warring. Thanks!--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 17:42, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
- I would like to thank you to deleting the history of the file. I discovered something that when the previous version of file is smaller in height and width, it displays correctly in the article. When the previous version is bigger in height and weight, it not display perfectly in article, the file appears stretched in height or weight. I don’t know if it’s a bug or something like that in the system. Maybe this little problem should be reported in the Wikipedia or commons wikimedia community. Thanks.--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 16:14, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hey Le moulin de la sorcière, This is indeed a bug - If you're on a laptop and Chrome > CTRL and F5 usually does the trick, It's a cache thing :), Thanks. 16:21, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- The new file is more centered, that’s why I nominated the previous file for deletion--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 21:15, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

- Hi Le moulin de la sorcière, What do you mean by a "better frame" ? I can't see any differences between the images. –Davey2010Talk 21:09, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- Can you erase the history of the file File:Consumers Distributing 1986 logo.jpg, I made some inutile reverts. Also I uploaded a better version of File:Consumers Distributing original logo.jpg which it appears full at left side on article. Thanks.--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 16:54, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- History's fine, also the next time you edit those images I'll being going here. Thanks. –Davey2010Talk 16:58, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- I'll be going to COM:AN. –Davey2010Talk 16:59, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
- Where you will be you mean? Also the history is not very essential, it has been reverted to original version.--Le moulin de la sorcière (talk) 17:06, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

Tech News
- There will be no Tech News issue next week. The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 2 September 2019.
Problems
- Some abuse filters stopped working because of a code change. Only variables for the current action will work. Variables defined inside a branch may not work outside of that branch. You can read more to see how to fix the filters.
- Only six accounts can be created from one IP address per day. Between 12 August and August 15 this was two accounts per day. This was because of a security issue. It is now six accounts per day again. [6]
Changes later this week
- Only a limited number of accounts can be created from one IP address. An IP address can be whitelisted so that it can create as many accounts as needed. This is useful at events where many new persons learn to edit. IP addresses that are whitelisted for this reason will also not show CAPTCHAs when you create accounts. This will happen on Wednesday. [7]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 20 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 21 August. It will be on all wikis from 22 August (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 21 August at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- There is an RFC about creating a new global user group with the right to edit abuse filters. This will be used to fix broken filters and make sure all filters will still work when software changes happen. You can read more and comment.
Special:Contributions/newbies
will no longer be working. This is because of performance reasons. It showed edits by new accounts. You can see this in the recent changes feed instead. [8]

RfC at Stanley Kubrick

On the contrary
On the contrary, dear Davey, you do a great job doing the stuff I can't do. You don't have to create content around here to be considered valuable. I've long considered you to be valuable and a trusted ally around here, and that kind of relationship is worth more than any featured article creation. Eric is not a difficult person to get along with, but he is if you piss him off by behaving like a monumental tool, as certain people have found out to their detriment lately. That is no different to real life; behave like a twat, expect to be called one, or at least treated like one. Even the most diplomatic of diplomats have their opinions on people. Sadly, we live in a world where people love taking offence. It's been made out to be such a bad thing that it now restricts the ability to speak freely and openly. Offence is not given, it is taken - and that is beyond anyone's control. The knack is to do what you and I do and do it without expecting everyone to be the same as you or I. And if you do expect that, well fuck off. Lol CassiantoTalk 17:52, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Cass, Nice to see a friendly face again!, Hope all is well,
- Thank you that means a lot, I consider you a great friend here, I absolutely agree it's definitely worth more than any article creation,
- I absolutely agree - In some ways WP is no different to RL in how you want to be treated etc,
- Agreed, The world would be boring if we were all the same and did the same things!, Being different and doing different things is what makes every individual on this site unique I guess :),
- LOL well one of me is bad enough ... don't need anyone else copying and being like me dear god no! ,
- Anyway thanks for your message and for popping by :), Take care, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 18:19, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Naffset?
Can you explain this revert? It's common and advisable to link to our sister projects. ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 15:00, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
- User:Koavf - Sure, Our readers knowledge isn't enhanced by visiting WikiData ..... it's pretty much just a condensed version of the article itself ..., There's nothing to be gained from visiting that website which is why I reverted you/removed it, You're more than welcome to link to Commons or Wikinews or any other sister projects that would help our readers in some way, Thanks, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 15:03, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

Honda Civic & TBAN
Davey2010 It been a week and I haven't seen any other consensus as you imply on the Honda Civic talkpage, if this what I have to do every time I want to propose a image by me and also get hounded by a certain individual then I might as well pack up and leave, but I won't. This TBAN is highly patronising but who am I kidding? People don't listen to me anyway. They think I'm some malicious sockpuppet user that want nothing but power. Being painted like that can get really tiring you know? --Vauxford (talk) 16:58, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Vauxford, Unfortunately I can't close it as I've already !voted in it, As much as I love IAR given the recent issues there I'd rather not close it, You're more than welcome to go to WP:Request for closure and have an uninvolved person close it tho,
- Thanks, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 17:08, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
Happiness
You just thanked me for "The happyness of the FA writers is of higher importance than being helpful to our readers." Would you sign that line? Just curious. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:02, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Gerda Arendt, Oops sorry I think I may of misread what was said, Unfortunately I would disagree with that, IMHO from what I've seen all FA writers put the reader first over themselves .... But then again I never contribute there so there's probably a lot I don't see.... –Dave | Davey2010Talk 13:00, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- Well, I worded it in a hopefully thought-provoking way, and hope a closer will stumble over it. I have been educated - by arbitration enforcement from the Laurence Olivier discussion (just look for my name, the third comment there got me to AE) with a similar history: a ten-year-old infobox removed to please the FA writers - to have to believe in it, because there's really no other answer to the simple question "why not?" Why not have a feature if it helps some readers, even if I don't need it myself? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:13, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt Admittedly I remove infoboxes myself from articles (those that have barely anything in them and or those that are "outshined" by the lead),
- I guess it's down more to user preference than it is FA writers I guess. –Dave | Davey2010Talk 13:22, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- I never ran into problems with you, but with FA writers. "outshine" seems to be a key word, thank you, - competition for the reader's attention? What do you think about these 2016 comments, then (not by me), nutshell: "it would really help if people who make "editorial choices" not to use infoboxes would do some more thinking about how they are going to serve their less prose-oriented readers - people who are just skimming, who aren't sure this article is the one they're looking for, who don't read English well, who are reading on their phones, who are trying to reuse our content". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:43, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- Some of those are really good points and admittedly I've never thought about the visually impaired (Is that the politically correct word ? ... I don't know can never keep up these days!) or dyslexic people,
- I would like to see a 2019/2020 RFC with all of those key points included and see what (if anything) needs changing, We should cater for everyone but then again we have Simple EN which could work better for those visually impaired or dyslexic, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 14:37, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- Do you imply that we should send the blind over to Simple English? - I don't think we ever need another RfC. I regret I took part in this one. - What do you think of Yay! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:10, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
- My train of thought was that Simple EN was perhaps better because the majority of articles have infoboxes and is much simpler in terms of reading although granted not every visually impaired person is "slow" .... All ideas and what not, Thanks. –Dave | Davey2010Talk 16:18, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
- Thinking of Graham87 who does the most complex history merges. What do you think of Yay! or "live and let live"? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:33, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
- I would agree with it, Thanks, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 16:50, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
- As I said before, "Infoboxes are just data tables, which can be navigated fine with screen readers. I like them when they contain a lot of statistical info; otherwise I'm generally meh about them, to be honest." Graham87 03:17, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi there. Thanks for the ping. I have blocked the above user for disruptive editing. I concur with you that WP:CIR applies. I'm reluctant to invoke WP:NOTHERE at this point and block indefinitely, although I accept that may yet prove to be necessary. Feel free of course to open discussions at the relevant noticeboard if you feel that an indef is required right now. Otherwise, if they continue to disrupt after they return from their block, and if I am active, feel free to ping me again and I'll deal with it - quite possibly more decisively next time. - Hi kingboyk, Apologies somehow missed this,
- Blocks can and do work sometimes so hopefully a short block might do some wonders :),
- I'm happy with your block - I don't mean this in a funny way but you're the admin and most admins know best :),
- Many thanks for your intervention again and if it continues I'll ping you,
- Many thanks and Happy editing :), –Dave | Davey2010Talk 01:35, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

Davey2010, note that the IP in question is very likely an editor named Mickeydee15. They've previously edited at 65.93.223.100, which is similar to 65.92.31.95, and both geolocate to Canada, near Montreal. (All 3 have hit Sarah Michelle Gellar before, so that's one of their primary articles of interest.) For more context, please see this thread on my Talk page. If you ever see esp. the named account continuing this nonsense, let me know – I'll eventually get around to filing an WP:ANI report the next time this gets out of hand. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 23:07, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi IJBall, Ah interesting, As the reverts went on I did have a feeling this was a sock of someone ...., I went to AIV a few days ago to report the 50 IP but that went declined ... and then the smart arse hopped to another IP anyway,
- If you (or anyone) did go to ANI you've have my 110% support easy,
- Thanks for the information here much appreciated, Thanks, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 01:26, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can use the new termbox interface if you edit Wikidata on a mobile device. This is to edit labels, descriptions and aliases easier on the mobile pages. [9]
- The new version of MediaWiki has been deployed during the last week.
- The previously announced change of positions of the "Wikidata item" link on all wikis has been rollbacked due to unexpected cache issues. [10]
- The limit for rollbacks has been increased from 10 to 100 rollbacks per minute. [11]
- The advanced version of the edit review pages (Recent Changes, Watchlist, and Related Changes) now include two new filters. These filters are for "All contents" and "All discussions". They will filter the view to just those namespaces. However the "All discussions" filter does not include pseudo talk pages, like discussions that are in the Project: or Wikipedia: namespaces. But it will include changes happening on Project talk: or the Wikipedia talk:. [12]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 September. It will be on all wikis from 5 September (calendar).
- When you log in, the software checks your password to see if it follows the Password policy. From this week, it will also complain if your password is one of the most common passwords in the world. If your password is not strong enough, please consider to change your password for a stronger password. [13]
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 4 September at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Grosse Pointe South High School
Hi Davey2010,
I must admit I'm confused why my edits where reverted. I'm new to editing on Wikipedia and am having a hard time figuring out if I did something wrong or if there is some sort of misunderstanding. I'm not even sure what 'rv coi' means. Googling gives the impressions it might mean something along the lines of "reverted due to conflict of interest."
Could you please explain what's going on? I'm feeling awfully deflated right now because not only did I spend hours looking up information and figuring out how to edit infoboxes but I also spent hours going out and taking those photographs myself.
I hope this can be cleared up because I thought I did a good job.
'lectric eye (talk) 19:37, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
- My apologies 'lectric eye I thought you were adding tons of promo content to the article but indeed on closer inspection you were only updating the infobox so sorry about that, I've gone ahead and restored your edits :),
- Thanks, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 19:51, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
Hi Davey2010,
Since you have deleted information about the exits at some MRT station in Singapore, will you be doing the same for all of them? If not, can you explain why pages about some stations can retain their exit information while others cannot?
Yuhui (talk) 03:11, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Yuhui, I will but at the moment there's an RFC at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Trains#RfC_about_station_layouts_and_exits so for the time being I'm waiting for that to conclude, From my understanding of that RFC unless it's prosed and [[wp:|sourced]] then they should be removed but as I said I'll let the RFC continue/conclude first, Thanks, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 09:32, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I've opened up a an ANEW report on the IP, as they're clearly edit warring on this. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 17:11, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi IJBall, No worries, Indeed and the lack of edit summaries certainly doesn't help their case neither, Thanks, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 17:14, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

Maya Hawke revisited
Heh – you were right on this one, though the original version(s) was a bit of a mess: e.g. [18].... I'm "fixing" right now. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 15:57, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
- IJBall, Ah sorry, I wasn't sure if access dates etc should've been changed as I noticed a few other MDY dates remained (I thought the script worked on them all), As you're about to edit it I shan't reinstate my edits but let me know when you've done and I'll use that YYYY script again :), Cheers, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 16:00, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've basically just restored your edit – only a couple of the article's original refs used ISO dates for accessdate; the rest were "all mdy", so the article should be "all mdy"... You might want to double-check my work, though... --IJBall (contribs • talk) 16:01, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
- IJBall Ah okay, I know some people prefer MDY and others prefer YYYY so yeah if I'm reverted I let it stand and admittedly I thought you reverted because you preferred that format lol, All looks good I think :), Thanks, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 16:04, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
- Oh, I personally do prefer the mixed mdy/ISO dates ref format – it's generally what I use when I create articles. But that's neither here nor there – in articles I haven't created, I (try to) go strictly by WP:CITEVAR and WP:DATERET: whatever the original ref dates format at the article was should be what's currently used (unless there was a Talk page consensus to change it). So, in the case of Maya Hawke, it started out (predominantly) as "all mdy dates", so that's what it should be now... I generally check this, but in this case I didn't check this until after your edit... --IJBall (contribs • talk) 16:08, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
- Admittedly I don't check the history at all - I just go by what the article is currently in, Some people agree with my approach ... and others.... not so much ,
- I prefer the MDY/DMY format and so used to edit war and get into arguments over it but you begin to realise that the energy and time spent on arguing could be much better spent on articles :),
- Many thanks for your message, Happy editing :), –Dave | Davey2010Talk 16:26, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

Astra1999
Have you looked into it possibly being EurovisionNim? Their MO was constantly changing car pics to their own, which resulted in a topic ban followed by an inappropriate rename, which my guess was to avoid scrutiny. Also of interest...Praxidicae (talk) 18:11, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Praxidicae, Nope definitely not EurovisionNim - Compare EurovionNims image with Astras :),
- I mean absolutely no disrespect to you none at all but I've given up caring at this point, The report was there the whole day and not one person commented on it, Given it's a highly watched and highly used board I expected some sort of reply even if it was a "I'll warn and see how it goes"... but nope nothing,
- Ah well I tried,

Reading comprehension
Sorry, if it wasn't clear — I meant my own incomprehension (on RfPP)! I obviously am also suffering from writing incomprehension! El_C 19:07, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

Your edit on Heathrow Airport
Hey there, just to avoid confusion: Your edit on Heathrow Airport restoring a large portion of content using Twinkle had to be undone. The removal by another user was justified as WP:AIRPORTS clearly states that we do no longer list terminal or alliance assignments in destination charts. This had been abandoned approx. two years ago in accordance with WP:NOTRAVEL. Please do not restore this and refer to the Aviation portal if in doubt. Thanks and best regards! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.217.122.192 (talk) 18:15, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

DJ Mangoo
A user (who has now been blocked as a sockpuppet) has remade Mangoo, which you previously nominated for deletion (when it was at "DJ Mangoo"). There's little more there now, although some might argue that his featuring on a newer, higher charting song now makes it meet notability guidelines, although I'm not entirely convinced of that. Not sure if you want to nominate it again, but just letting you know. Ss112 23:59, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Ss112, Many thanks for letting me know, I agree the 2019 song certainly seems more notable than him, I've gone ahead and renominated it for deletion, Thanks again foe the heads up much appreciated. –Davey2010Talk 00:16, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

- I don't know how to handle this – there are a bunch of other editors and Admins that have tangled with this editor before, and I bet at least some of them have further evidence... However I'm guessing contacting them would be considered "WP:CANVASSING". But I'd like to hear from other editors who have dealt with AnimeDisneylover95 previously (and there are a lot of them!!). --IJBall (contribs • talk) 17:31, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
- I think ANI was the best way to handle it tbh, Seems Neil and Rob both have had dealiings with him however Rob's vanished and Neil's on a break (I think), Hopefully someone will do something soon, –Davey2010Talk 17:37, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
- Actually, I think NeilN just got back from break. Drmies has also dealt with this editor before. But I'm leery of pinging them into this. Right now, EdJohnston, an actual Admin, seems to agree that this editor is a problem, so I'm hoping that will carry the day with other Admins... --IJBall (contribs • talk) 20:53, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
- Oops, no, you're right – NeilN hasn't posted in a year! However, Drmies is definitely still around... --IJBall (contribs • talk) 20:55, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
- Ah okay well if you wanted you could ping them in the ANI thread as it wouldn't be like you're pinging a complete random admin, ANI has a\ plenty of eyes there tho so yeah hopefully something will be done, Thanks –Davey2010Talk 20:59, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

- IJBall It's at times like this I feel like headbutting a wall in the hope it'd somehow help! .... somehow I don't think it will unfortunately. –Davey2010Talk 17:28, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
- And back to editwarring at Michaela Conlin, again contrary to the MOS. And then "fixed" it in subsequent edits – again totally WP:POINTy... --IJBall (contribs • talk) 17:19, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

regarding your reverts of my edits
hello, recently you've been reverting my image replacements, saying it need to be "consensus" in order for me to actually replace them. i'm sure you are able to tell that which images are better in angle, quality, etc. but i guess not really. while i've been inactive to focus more on schoolwork & etc i don't have the time to keep getting into a "revert war" because i was trying to improve articles by providing better pictures. but i guess i'm not allowed to replace images anymore unless its someone else, so if you see that if the pictures i upload in the future could be used, feel free to do so(remember it has to be consensus). otherwise i'm wasting my time here. thank you
--Kevauto (talk) 05:05, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, As I've reverted you on a good few articles it'd take forever to bring all the images forward and explain why they're not great, You're more than welcome to improve articles here just don't unneedlessly replace good images with yours Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 06:58, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Problems
- There is a problem in the visual editor when you copy or delete text with footnotes. It will be fixed soon. [23]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 October. It will be on all wikis from 10 October (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 9 October at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Community Wishlist Survey has a new format. It will focus on wikis that typically get less support. It will probably go back to the normal format next year. It is not decided exactly how it will work this year. You can leave feedback.
- The URL of the Wikimedia wiki main pages could be changed. This is because the current URLs cause several problems. For example
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Main_Page
would behttps://www.wikidata.org/
instead. You can tell the developers if this would cause problems for your wiki. - There is a new technical community newsletter. You can read more about the work of Wikimedia's technical community. Subscribe to get the information in the future.
- Outreachy is an internship program for groups who are underrepresented in free and open-source software. There are seven Wikimedia projects about coding, documentation and quality assurance in the next round. Persons who fit the criteria can apply. The last day to apply is 5 November.

The U.S. Navy guided missile cruiser USS Josephus Daniels (CG-27) maneuvers around an island as it passes through the Strait of Magellan en route to Punte Arenas, Chile, on 1 July 1990, during exercise "Unitas XXXI", a combined exercise involving the naval forces of the United States and nine South American nations.

Recent changes
- You can now use more advanced editing tools on the mobile web. You can turn them on and off in your preferences in the mobile version. [24]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 October. It will be on all wikis from 17 October (calendar).

Future changes
- Internet Explorer 6 and 7 are no longer supported. This means the browsers might start looking a bit weird. They will not get security support. You can't read Wikimedia wikis in Internet Explorer on Windows XP or Windows versions that are older than Windows XP. This is because almost no one uses the browsers anymore. Supporting them made the wikis less secure for everyone else. [25]
- In the future section headings might have a share link. This is to make it easier to link to the section. You can read more and discuss.

Editing News #2 – Mobile editing and talk pages – October 2019
Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter
Inside this newsletter, the Editing team talks about their work on the mobile visual editor, on the new talk pages project, and at Wikimania 2019.
Help
What talk page interactions do you remember? Is it a story about how someone helped you to learn something new? Is it a story about how someone helped you get involved in a group? Something else? Whatever your story is, we want to hear it!
Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.
Talk Pages
The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.
The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.
Mobile visual editor
The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.
- On 3 September, the Editing team released version 3 of Edit Cards. Anyone could use the new version in the mobile visual editor.
- There is an updated design on the Edit Card for adding and modifying links. There is also a new, combined workflow for editing a link's display text and target.
- Feedback: You can try the new Edit Cards by opening the mobile visual editor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Edit cards talk page.
- In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
- One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
- New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
- Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
- Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.
Wikimania
The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.
Looking ahead
- Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
- Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.
- Measuring the impact of Edit Cards: The Editing team hopes to share results in November. This study asks whether the project helped editors add links and citations. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: Edit Cards project page.

- Well, some will not like my description of AE, but that's my experience. I was there. Compare the complete waste of time when my friend Andy improved a newbies malformed "infobox" (and the formatting made it a real infobox, something he was prohibited to create even in his "own" articles, - another of these kafkaesque restrictions arbcom comes up with that don't improve the project), which kept two noticeboards busy for weeks, and the filer desysopped in the end, instead of a short thank-you for helping a new user. Recent changes
- The API sandbox and help pages now show more clearly when API modules are marked as

. API modules marked as internal were probably internal before. It was easier to miss. You should look for non-internal alternatives. [26]
Problems
- There is a translation tool we use on wikis with more than one language. For a few days it did not create pages for new languages when someone translated a page. The languages did not show in the language bar. This has been fixed. [27]
- The history and diffs can show wrong content. This is because of a cache problem. It will soon be fixed. [28]

Shock Sites Revisions
Hello! I wanted to discuss the revisions on the Shock Site page that you reversed earlier today. I saw your comment that many things appeared to be removed or changed and the categories had been removed. All of the content (other than the See Also list) were incorporated into the text of my revision as I did not want to remove any content, only format it in a way that was less example listing and more an explanation of different facets of shock sites. Given the issue template on the top of the site requesting sections of history, legality, and impact, I thought that incorporation may solve those issues. Would I be able to get more information from you on how you think I might better approach this revision so that I can still add the information on history, ethics, legality, and impact? Additionally, I am tagging Reagle and Shalor (Wiki Ed) as they are aware of the proposed revisions I had, and I would like to keep them up to date on the conversation. Many thanks, -Bcstanley1 (talk) 22:59, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Bcstanley1, My apologies you indeed didn't remove any content so apologies for saying you did, Having looked at both IMHO the "old" layout is much much better, You could still add those 3 to the article but still keeping the "old" revision, Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 08:39, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Parallelism
Good evening, user Davey2010. Recently, I stumbled upon a deletion discussion (you opened) in which I find that despite the subject having multiple charted songs and essentially satisfying WP:NMUSIC, the article was deleted for lacking notability. Another page associated with this musician — K-391 — is also a similar case. K-391's notability is hugely dependent on his friend Alan Walker who is a chart-topping DJ and producer. The issue with K-391 is that the page discusses nothing more than his association/collaborations with Walker. I think, to qualify for a Wikipedia page, a subject has to have independent notability that must not purely be dependent on another person (according to WP:N). Given that you thought Mangoo warranted deletion, I figured you might think the same for K-391 as they are both similar in structure and notability (content about collaborations, charted songs, no great info & no in-depth coverage about themselves). I was wondering if you, when you have the time, could take a look at the page and consider it for a deletion discussion. Kind thanks, Agenzmale (talk) 15:07, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
- Good Afternoon Agenzmale, Thanks for your message - Having looked at the article & sources I concur this is the exact same issue as with Mangoo so I've nominated it for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/K-391 (2nd nomination),
- Many thanks for your message,
- Enjoy the rest of your afternoon/evening, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 15:56, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Thoughts
Hi, Davey - I'm hoping my most recent comments at the RfA may provide more food for thought. [36] and [37]. I just feel that RfA has become more like a whipping post for any editor who has been on WP for a substantial length of time and dared to throw his name in the hat at RfA. GRuban has been here going on 14 yrs, and is as close to exemplary as they come. What is happening to him now is sad and undeserved. I think the whole thing has been blown out of proportion, and needs to be brought back into context. I've seen other RfA's where discussions were clerked and quickly moved to the TP but that isn't being done with this one. Anyway, thanks in advance for your consideration. - Hi again Atsme, I think GRuban's a great editor don't get me wrong but for me being an comes with a lot of trust, You need to trust the person you're giving the bit too .... If they can make an easy slip up such as this who's to say it won't happen again or who's to say more sensitive data won't be slipped out,
- The stalking I'm not really fussed about as such but for me the email is a serous concern although to others I appreciate it not be an issue at all.
- Unfortunately had it not been for the email issue my !vote would've firmly remained in the support section still,
- Thanks. –Davey2010Talk 13:23, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

- Hi Vauxford, Nice to see you back :),
- In future if you come across him or his socks please file an SPI via WP:Twinkle (but don't tick CU or you'll get a good slapping as I have done previously),
- Next week I'll be doing 8 hour shifts in a new job so my time here will be limited and obviously I'm not flaffing around with SPIs the moment I get home so you or someone else would need to continue it the SPIs if he continues,
- Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 20:47, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

Problems
- You will be able to read but not to edit some wikis for up to 30 minutes on 26 November at 06:00 (UTC). You can see which wikis. It will probably last much shorter than 30 minutes. This will also affect the
centralauth
database. This could for example affect changing passwords, logging in to new wikis, changing emails or global renames. [39]
Changes later this week
- You can soon vote on proposals for the Community Wishlist Survey. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on. You can vote on proposals from 20 November to 2 December. This year the wishlist will focus on Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage and Wikinews. You can read more about the format for this year.
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 20 November at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.

- The mobile beta mode will be disabled to have less maintenance. The developers will focus on the desktop improvements project. You can turn on advanced mobile contributions mode if you want to see the categories. You could also jump back to the top. This can instead be done with a gadget or user script. [40]
- Parsoid is software we use for the visual editor, content translation, Flow and the Android app. This has been rewritten. It will come to the wikis gradually over the next two weeks. It has been tested, but there could be some diffs or previews that don't look right. If you see any you can report them. [41]

Outing
Discussions at ANI tend to bring out emotional responses. It looks like you were doing some good work there that got supported (I haven't looked at the background), so thanks for that. However, I noticed the edit summary at the top of my watchlist and it is not acceptable to gratuitously use a name that another editor has specifically asked not be used. You may disagree but it would be easier to let it go and accept that we have different opinions. The alternative is to make a lot of drama about a very trivial word. Johnuniq (talk) 22:46, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Johnuniq, My sincere apologies for reverting you earlier, I genuinely had forgot you were an admin otherwise I obviously wouldn't of reverted you,
- His name is here in black and white as well as elsewhere so in this specific instance I don't understand how I'm OUTING him if his name is already public here?, If his name wasn't public here then I could understand but given his full name is still public as I said I don't understand how I'm outing him?,
- That being said I have no fight in this like I said had I known you were an admin I would've left it at your revert,
- Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:53, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for the very considerate response. Of course you don't need to check if the person you are reverting is an admin, and yes, my RfA was quite recent. The main point is that the editor specifically asked that the name not be used. Under those conditions, using it is just a stick to poke them, and insisting on using it is really poking them. That approaches harassment territory. If someone starts editing with a username that suggests their real name, they have a right to be renamed and continue without others unnecessarily drawing attention to their former name. Of course if the person were being disruptive in a way that continued disruption conducted under the original name, it might be necessary to draw attention to that in an ANI report. However, the editor and the name are a sideshow in the discussion in question. My opinion, which I think others might share, is that it is best to avoid using personal names in a situation like that. Johnuniq (talk) 23:03, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- Fair point, To be fair tho if he didn't show up and make a random comment I wouldn't of poked him lol, I'll just shut up now probably the wisest thing I could do at this stage is simply not speak :), Anyway thank you for your message, Have a great day, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 23:19, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

Perhaps you didn't notice, but Begoon recently uploaded a cleaner version of this file in png format as File:GHR logo.png and there's really no need to have two of what are essentially the same files per WP:NFCC#3. Now, I'm not exactly sure why JJMC89 is contesting the jpeg's non-free use in Greatest Hits North East, but my guess is that it has to do with WP:NFCC#8 and item 17 of WP:NFC#UUI (perhaps he will clarify his reasons), but png generally considered to be a better format for logos than jpeg (because there tend to be no artifacts I think); so, if you think the file should be used in the "North East" article, then perhaps you should add a non-free use rationale for that particular use to the png file's page and replace the jpeg with the png in the article. If JJMC89 or anyone else disagrees, then they can tag the file with {{Di-disputed fair use rationale}} or nominate it for discussion at FFD. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:34, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Marchjuly, Unfortunately I didn't have the faintest idea otherwise ofcourse I would've left it, I've self reverted on that file,
- I absolutely agree PNG is much much better than JPG and I welcome any conversions to that format that are made :),
- Thanks for making me aware, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 20:49, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- This kind of things happens quite a bit, particularly with logos. An existing file is "re-created" in another format (most of the time these new files seem to be svg) and replaced in various articles, thus making them orphans in many cases or somehow otherwise have problems per WP:NFCC#10c. There's really no automatic notification that goes out to anyone that says "hey this file has been replaced by another file". The file's uploader will be notified if the file is tagged for speedy deletion, but they won't know why other than that the file is no longer being used. Sometimes the person doing the recreating will add {{SVG version available}} or {{PNG version available}} to the relevant file pages, but not always. So, please understand I'm not faulting you for not catching this.Per WP:NFCCE, however, you are responsible for providing a separate, specific non-free use rationale for the png file if you feel that it's non-free use Greatest Hits North East is justified. The file does have a separate specific rationale for its non-free use in Greatest Hits Radio, but it needs one for each use. Files missing a rationale for a particular use will picked up by a bot which then will remove the file from any article(s) where it lacks the required rationale. One thing about missing rationales is that just providing one isn't always automatically enough per WP:JUSTONE. I didn't go into to much detail about item 17 of NFC#UUI above, but generally corporate/team/brand logos are considered OK for use in primary identification purposes in the parent article about the parent entity, but not automatically so by default in articles about child entities of the same organization unless there content (ideally sourced) about the child entity using the parent's branding in its article. In such cases, a logo specific to the child entity is considered more appropriate. So, in an article about a TV network, the network's primary logo is fine for the main/parent article about the network, but the same primary logo is almost always not considered acceptable for any articles about any individual stations of the network unless there is something discussing the station's choice of branding. In such cases, a logo particular to the individual station is preferred, even if its pretty much the same logo with a slight difference (e.g. call letters). So, please keep this in mind when providing the missing rationale because the better you can clarify in the rationale how the file meets policy with respect to the particular non-free use and the better you can provide content to the relevant article in question showing this to be the case, the easier it will be for others to assess the non-free use. Many people simply copy-and-paste the rationale they see provided for one use, only changing the article parameter, but then do nothing else since they assume that adding any rationale makes everything OK; some times this does by coincidence work OK, but most of the time it doesn't per WP:OTHERIMAGE. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:32, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

I've told you this before. Per policy you are not permitted to remove CSD notices from files that you have uploaded. — JJMC89 (T·C) 23:44, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- Policy ignored, Take it to FFD. –Davey2010Talk 00:34, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- The best thing for you to do here is to follow the template's instructions and challenge the CSD tag on the file's talk page. You can also add {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed}} to the file's page as well. The administrator who reviews the file will see that the CSD tag has been challenged and decide whether the file should be deleted or whether further discussion at FFD is necessary. Whatever your reasons are for thinking the files should be kept, they are going to be overlooked or lost in the fact that you're basically edit warring by repeatedly removing the CSD tags. I'm not trying to be a jerk about this, but I've seen files tagged for CSD which have been declined by the reviewing admin who then suggested further discussion take place at FFD after reading challenges to the CSD tag on the file's talk page, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone edit warring by repeatedly removing a CSD tag who ended at ANI or AN3 not be blocked. When it comes to former logos like this, there is a pretty strong consensus established through previous FFD/WP:NFCR discussions that there needs to be some sourced critical commentary about the logo itself for it to be deemed WP:NFCC compliant per WP:NFC#cite_note-4 and WP:NFCC#8, and being "former" in and of itself is not really enough. Given the way the files are currently being used, however, they seem unlikely to be kept as non-free unless more sourced content specifically related to the station's change in branding/logos is added to the article which actually discusses the logos themselves. These two former logo files might actually be WP:PD based upon there simplicity of design at least in the US, and that would be a valid thing t discuss on their respective talk pages. I've seen non-free files tagged for CSD converted to PD by the reviewing admin when this has been brought up, but again the best way to bring it up is by posting on the file's talk page. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:27, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

I'm wishing you a Merry Christmas, because that is what I celebrate. If you don't like Christmas or just don't celebrate it in any of its forms, then please accept a generic "Happy Holidays". If you celebrate no holidays at this time of year, then hopefully you will be satisfied with an even more generic "Season's Greetings". :) BOZ (talk) 21:43, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hi BOZ, Thanks so much and I wish you and yours a fantastic Crimbo and a very happy and healthy new year,
- Also off-topic but have you ever thought about removing the last paragraph inre to not liking or celebrating Christmas? .... You shouldn't need to be afraid of offending anyone over Christmas greetings and you shouldn't feel the need to justify your own greeting - Offence is taken, not given :) (I wish everyone a Merry Christmas regardless of religion or whatnot - If they're offended then hey ho)
- Anyway take care, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:01, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
