Quick question

So a few times today I was using WP:Citation Hunt to help find sources for articles, so I would copy and paste the sentence where a citation was needed into Google search. After I did that, a few times I would see the same exact words pop up from other websites. Should I be bold and remove that part of the article or just use those websites as citations? Hi SoyokoAnis, are you asking what to do if you suspect that the article copied from another website? This can be tricky because often it happens the other way around as well, with websites copying from Wikipedia. Usually it helps to try to figure out when the text was added to the article, and compare that with the website's date, if you're able to determine that. Did you have a specific case in mind? If a website copied from Wikipedia, it's not a reliable source and should not be used as a citation – that's called circular referencing. DanCherek (talk) 03:56, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

As it seems, this author and book are better-known in Canada, and coverage on it may be tied up in government archives, so I'll have to see what I can find. On Wikipedia, sometimes people use it as described at Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a soapbox or means of promotion, meaning that users should not try to "climb a soapbox" and write opinionated, non-neutral pieces about controversial subjects. By the way, feel free to just call me Dan Also, you'll notice that my reply to you is slightly indented, because I started my message with a colon (:). If you were to reply to me again, you would typically increase the indentation by another level by starting your message with two colons (::). That helps organize talk page posts a bit to make it easier to tell who is replying to whom. There's more information about that at Wikipedia:Indentation. @EvantheMendel: No, it's not a requirement, but when you have dozens of people talking to each other, as there are on some pages, you can imagine that it gets confusing if there is no indentation. I have seen that you recently used duplication detector report on my recent changes on Music of Iraq and added template about this. I understand your action, but I have been misunderstood. Usually I paste the text I want to write and save immadietly and then go back and write with my own words. I make these measures since English is my third language and it takes a lot of time to do this and to make sure that I dont forget anything. Your work on the article is commendable. As I alluded to in the peer review, I think it is inherently limited by the fact that you are trying to describe something still in development that does not fully exist yet. That's a limitation due to the subject matter, not your efforts. Regardless, it means that most of the article is speculative or relies on what SpaceX says they think it will be able to do. Yep, it is quite a ride to write the article. I constantly have to monitor every nut and crackles in forums and tweets, and trying to weed out speculations. Starship has a lot of coverages, but even in reliable sources, there are a lot of speculations and such. Vandalism or Misleading Information?

Hi, thank you for your attention to the article Indonesian Malaysians. But someone keeps changing the information listed. As an Indonesian, I can confirm that this is a mistake because Anak Dagang (Foreign Malays) means Non Malay Malaysians =/ Indonesian Overseas. One must remember that the term "Indonesia" is a modern construct and only came to prominent following the Indonesian revolution in the early 20th century. Dutch East Indies Citizens, Srivijayans and Majapahitans definitely were not Indonesians. In the same way, you cannot equate the modern Italians with those Romans of antiquity, "Italian" is a modern identity. Thanks in advance🙏

Take down the Larry Dale Brimner article, it’s lousy, poorly written and inaccurate. and he’s a thief and a scam artist. Brimner says on his web page he’s written more than 200 childrens books since 1987. How? By plagiarizing, theft and copyright infringement.

I know that first hand. I license my own photography from 1960s Civil Rights. He sought a license for a 2010 book “Birmingham Sunday.” Unwilling to pay my standard license fee, he bought a bootlegged copy and stole my copyright fee.

He never paid a dime for the stolen property. GE should known about copy right given all of his boasting about how many he holds.

He is now trying to republish “Birmingham Sunday” book in paperback and had his publisher contact me. It took me a while to dig through my files. My first thought was an absurdly high figure. Instead, Ijest refused.

I would not license that photo or any other to him. He’s already robbed me once and my impression is that I’m not the first.

It should note he is a plagiarist and serial copy right abuser, not just of my work. It’s not my dispute with him, it is what I know is a pattern of practice. In fact, the Wikipedia article looks like a his web site bio. At 78 I don’t have time to deal with lawsuits etc. I will leave that to Getty which also holds copyrights he violated regularly. Hello! Thanks for your review of my initial work, and the guidance on doing it right. As you noted, I have copied the Aubrey de Grey Wikipedia entry, and pasted it into my draft. As a newcomer, there is tons to learn, and finding detailed instruction is not always easy. The copy/paste action was simply to use an existing biography page as a newbie's template for the bio I am working on. In the end, my entries will have no content that in any way mentions or refers to de Grey. You instruction to give attribution does not appear to be very burdensome, but neither does it add value that I can think of. In those circumstances, is attribution still necessary? @Walticular: Yes, whenever you copy content from another Wikipedia article, even if it's just temporary, you should provide attribution in the edit summary to indicate where you copied from. There are at least two reasons you should do this. The more important one is that this attribution is required by the terms of Wikipedia's license. The second reason is that if the edit is flagged as a potential copyright violation, as your edit was, it's helpful for the reviewing editor to see that it was copied within Wikipedia and not from another website. Your edits to Ray tracing (graphics) and Physically based rendering only superficially modified the copyright source material. It was mostly slight reordering of words while retaining much of the original word choice and sentence structure. That is called close paraphrasing. Please don't use software to generate the text that you add to Wikipedia. You should be summarizing information from sources in your own words, from scratch. I didn't delete any of your articles. Here's what actually happened: a few days ago, you created numerous soundtrack articles by splitting off content from film articles. None of these contained the required attribution as detailed in the instructions at WP:SPLIT, and I went through them one by one, fixing all of them by hand. I then posted on your talk page asking you to do this yourself in the future.

So today it was frustrating to see that you had created another dozen soundtrack articles, all without attribution, and with logged-out editing on many of these articles making it difficult to see exactly what had been copied from where. I redirected many of these back to the main articles because you can't just continuously expect other editors to clean up after you. Before you create any more new articles, please carefully read Wikipedia:Splitting#How to properly split an article, including step 4, which is critical. Up to now, your edit summary when creating new pages has been something like "Creating an article for ______ Soundtrack". Instead, I'm just asking that you use the edit summary to indicate where you are copying content from – for example, "Moved from [[page name]], see its history for attribution". A few things:

1. Since you have been editing the article of someone you are advising, please read the conflict of interest guidelines and provide the proper disclosure as required by Wikipedia's policies. Note that COI editors are discouraged from editing affected articles directly, but may propose changes on talk pages by using the {{request edit}} template so that they can be peer reviewed.
2. Please stop copying text from other websites that are not compatibly licensed. It is a copyright violation and will be removed every time.
3. The existing citation in the article mentions 8 April as his birthday; if that is incorrect, please provide a new citation to a reliable source that supports 1 April.

There are a few issues here. Since you have been editing a draft about your father, please read the conflict of interest guidelines and provide the proper disclosure as required by Wikipedia's policies. Additionally, Wikipedia can't accept text copied from those previously published articles just because they've been republished on your website. The copyright holder of each article (typically the author and/or the publisher, depending on the specific situation) would need to release it under a compatible license. That interpretation is not correct. Copyright typically persists even after the original author's death and regardless of whether the use of the material is "aimed towards any financial liabilities" (and even then, Wikipedia's license permits commercial reuse). Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution

I'm new to wiki so for the Henry Cushier Raven article I wrote, I copied a random page's template of a man with similar background as Raven. The article I wrote kept nothing from the copied page, other than the general template. Do I need to disclose the copying and link to the copied page in that case?

Any time you copy text from another Wikipedia article that you did not originally write yourself, you should provide attribution in the edit summary, even if it's temporary. There are at least two reasons you should do this. The more important one is that this attribution is required by the terms of Wikipedia's license. The second reason is that if the edit is flagged as a potential copyright violation, as your edit was, it's helpful for the reviewing editor to see that it was copied within Wikipedia and not from another website. Actually, content on the Texas Department of Insurance website is not compatibly licensed by default: the terms of use do not allow commercial use, which is incompatible with Wikipedia. As a social media editor who is editing the article of your employer, you are considered a paid editor and should disclose your status as detailed above.
