The Order of the Superior Scribe of Wikipedia
For all the time and effort you have put in — across thousands of edits — to markedly improve numerous articles related to Christianity all these years. The magnitude of the positive impact you have had with regard to Wikipedia's coverage of academic topics related to Christianity is unprecedented; I cannot think of any other editor who has worked so rigorously and improved those topics to the extent that you have. You are still the one I will reach out to when I have a problem, but you have taught me a lot, and this article was just too much to ask someone else to do for me. I would have enjoyed banging my head against a wall more, but hey, I followed your example and got it done. October music

[edit]
story · music · places

You may remember Maryvonne Le Dizès, my story today as on 28 August. Some September music was unusual: last compositions and eternal light, with Ligeti mentioned in story and music. - About the FAC: how about a very limited topic for a first FAC? We are all overwhelmed by the History ;) - I take just one cantata at a time, not the history of cantatas. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:22, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you dear one. It isn't FAC that I am committed to, it's the article itself - the topic - that needs to be WP's highest quality. I will deal with all their comments and renominate, then do it again, and again until it's what it needs to be. I was too focused on being concise. I over-combined and left out facts. I will go back to being thorough which I'm good at. Jenhawk777 (talk) 18:06, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd still recommend: do one FAC before, on a limited topic. - When my friend and conductor and the group she founded wanted to do Bach's Mass in B minor, they patiently started with a few Bach cantatas which all contained one piece of the complete music. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:03, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Would one section of this history be appropriate? Jenhawk777 (talk) 19:05, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That might be an option but I didn't think of that, - I rather thought of one biography (not a specific one). - Today brought a timely promotion of Helmut Bauer (bishop) to the Main page on the day when pieces from Mozart's Requiem were performed for him. From no article to Main page in three days ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:36, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I made Leif Segerstam my big story today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:33, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My story today is a cantata 300 years old, based on a hymn 200 years old when the cantata was composed, based on a psalm some thousand years old, - so said the 2015 DYK hook. I had forgotten the discussion on the talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:44, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome! That is truly cool. Jenhawk777 (talk) 22:31, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

History of Christianity and Anglo-Saxon England

[edit]

Hi @Jenhawk777 :) I have taken a lot at the History of Christianity page which I know you have been working hard on. I belief the section I wrote on Early Medieval England has been compressed to the point of inaccuracy and I was wondering if I could possibly help out a little.

As it stands we have: In southeastern Britain and Ireland, Nordic forms of paganism were introduced by Scandinavian settlers causing Christianity to adopt some aspects. Suppression of paganism is first recorded in England in the mid-seventh-century. (197 characters without spaces, 227 with)

I propose: Germanic paganism was introduced to parts of Britain by settlers from the 5th century onwards. Its suppression is first recorded in England in the mid-7th century and there are no recorded heathen kings after 954. (179 characters without spaces, 213 with)

This addresses the lack of reference to Anglo-Saxon paganism which was if anything more influential here than Nordic paganism, the wider geographical scope than south eastern Britain and the ambiguous meaning of "causing Christianity to adopt some aspects".

It's still imperfect but I think it's better. What do you think? I can pull up references and swap it out if it's wanted or we can talk to find a better alternative. Ingwina (talk) 20:36, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're right. Everything keeps getting compressed to the point of inaccuracy it seems. Your suggestion is good and much appreciated. Jenhawk777 (talk) 22:31, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Blog

[edit]

I came across this series of articles [1] awhile back. With titles like that, you'd think they would be interesting. But IMO, they're mostly not, so I can't really recommend them. Maybe I'm reading them wrong, or I'm not the target audience. Parts actually make me wonder about AI-writing. However, they say they are looking for people like you to write, so maybe you'd be interested in writing something better.

Btw, the 30 Aug 2024 piece by "Tracing Woodgrains" is a re-print from another blog, and apparently inspired the series. It's different, somewhat interesting, but it's long and I can't really recommend that one either, unless you're very interested in WP:s coverage about cryptocurrencies. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:42, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanx, I will look it over. Some of it could be interesting. Generally, I would say WP editors try really hard to be unbiased. Sometimes they are. Jenhawk777 (talk) 18:26, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In other news, an Indian media company, ANI (I kid you not), sued WP for what Asian News International stated. This got a lot of press, so a Wikipedian created Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation. The court found that article in contempt of court, and ordered the WMF to remove it. Somewhat to the surprise of the WP-community, they did, a first-time-ever afawct. Minor discussion on that at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(WMF)#The_Asian_News_International_vs._Wikimedia_Foundation_situation. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:45, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Zanjar Records (03:30, 27 October 2024)

[edit]

Is it possible to change the username? I made a mistake with the name and added an extra letter. --Zanjar Records (talk) 03:30, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Zanjar Records, yes, see WP:CHU. If you want the org-name as part of the username, you need to make it "Kim from Zanjar Records" or somesuch. Note also that your userpage User:Zanjar Records is not the place to try to write a WP-article, but you should put something like "I work at Zanjar Records and I'm here to try to make a WP-article about Zanjar Records" on it.
I recommend you take the time to read WP:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing, WP:COI, WP:YFA and WP:NORG. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 05:44, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Timothy Venia (18:09, 31 October 2024)

[edit]

I want to add an article, but I'm unsure whether to create a new one. The topic I want to cover is the Neiman family market. Would it be better to include this information in the Mayville article instead? --Timothy Venia (talk) 18:09, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It depends upon how much material there is - how many sources specifically. I am guessing adding to the existing article is the best approach. Jenhawk777 (talk) 15:33, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For a surprise, a Bach cantata is on the Main page today, where it was last year for the 300th anniversary, and they were too lazy to find something new ;) - Look at my story, and listen to the 3 whole-tone steps and the dialogues of Fear and Hope. - An open letter open to be signed (more info just below and on the talk), - I haven't checked if you did, please ignore then. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:32, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I did sign it. I think maybe I've read some of Beutler tho not Riffaud. We are losing that whole generation aren't we? They are leaving behind a valuable legacy. Who is coming up to take their place? Jenhawk777 (talk) 18:53, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I uploaded more pics, on a mountain in the sun above the fog. - Madeleine Riffaud - remember. - Another theologian died, - please check the English. No idea what Fundamentaltheology is, for example. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:23, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Btw, I don't know if you remember, but I think one of your earliest "clashes" on WP (check your 2017 archive) was with the Great Wikipedian Doug Weller. Sadly, User_talk:Doug_Weller#Update_on_cancer. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:31, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I can get behind that.
My interaction with Doug doesn't really qualify as a clash. He was trying to help me by directing me to the Teahouse for additional learning back when I was in a panic over Jytdog. Inexperience on WP on my part, and bias on Jytdog's, produced a perfect storm for me, but Doug was nice about it. I'm very sorry to hear he is ill. Jenhawk777 (talk) 19:46, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He's one of the very few I've contacted off-wiki when I saw the need. Admin, former arbcom member, sound mind. And we were both disliked by a Wikipedian who thought she was a descendant of Jesus and Mary Magdalene (true story). She did some socking and one of her accounts was named Doug Dumbass (subtle). For some reason he don't think [2] is funny, but Great Wikipedians are allowed to be eccentric. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:09, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good night nurse!! I don't think I was ever rude to Doug! I hope not. Perhaps if I was it was a case of fork handles... . Jenhawk777 (talk) 20:23, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That petition took of a bit. I actually started this thread Wikipedia:Community_response_to_Asian_News_International_vs._Wikimedia_Foundation#The_Asian_News_International_vs._Wikimedia_Foundation_situation in October (originally at the the Village pump, but it's been moved), and I'm pretty sure it's the longest WP-thread I've ever started. It's Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_327#Scriptural_texts_(WP:RSPSCRIPTURE) x5. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:31, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. A long and seemingly pointless argument imo. Primary sources have limited value and not just in religion. Most commentaries are akin to a modern blog, and should not be quoted as authoritative.
I went to a State school. My religion professors were not all believers, and of those that were, they weren't all Christian. They flunked any paper, any person, who did not practice accepted mainstream scholarship. They defined mainstream scholarship by its use of modern critical method - by "methodological naturalism" - and what is verifiable historically - which in religion, isn't much when it comes down to it. I graduated #1 in my class and won a full ride to Vanderbilt grad school, and I did not do so by quoting dubious commentaries that reflected personal belief. On WP, I have never used a commentary in any religion article I have ever worked on and never will. (I am clearly infinitely superior in every way... and humble of course...)
We just have to follow the same standards no matter the topic. Problem solved. Religion discussions are not quite as bad as politics, but they tend to be filled with passionate personal opinion that is usually blind to its very nature as personal - and that happens on both sides of the divide. Sigh. You and me bud. And Gerda of course. Everyone else is a bit nuts... Jenhawk777 (talk) 20:12, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the laugh! Yep, noone would think there's something nuts in dedicating hours to this place. But as I told my brother recently, I can do this, or something like watch a tv-series, play a video-game, read a novel, solve a crossword (and I do most of those). But WP has elements of all those things, so I like to do that too. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:25, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is hard to explain the appeal to non-wikipedias isn't it? Long hours of research and reading, recording minutiae into an outdated format to occasionally obtain over-the-top criticisms from people you'll never meet for work they don't even recognize. Whhoohoo! What fun! At least one of my children thinks I am simply wasting time, and that is no doubt absolutely true from time to time. Yet we all go to WP first when looking something up! But you know, personal tastes are impossible to explain or justify to others. My dad loved golf and that is completely inexplicable to me... :-) Jenhawk777 (talk) 20:41, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there are annoying people you encounter, but there is also the complete opposite, like yourself, and that makes it worth it. And the successes, though perhaps minor, can be so effing rewarding. Cooperating with unknown people you perhaps just share a narrow interest with can be so fun.
A while back, the wife of Skeeter Reece asked me if there was any way we could get a pic she had of her husband and a somewhat known boxer onto WP, she had the only copy. I managed to find the photographer who took it in 80:s online (unusual name, now an astronomer and used to be married to Richard Pryor). Mrs Reece called her, and she agreed to do the Commons-thing, which is not that easy for a beginner. So now the world can look at File:The Champ and The Clown.jpg, I put it in every article I could think of. Call me nuts, but I like that. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:02, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
