Request for guidance

[edit]

Hello, my name is Esther. You created my Wikipedia page in 2022. I'm reaching out because I'd like to focus on creating pages and or uploading images of Caribbean persons of note. Would you be interested in providing guidance on how to do so, or supporting by starting the pages? I'm in the beginning stages of the project, but I'd like to start laying the groundwork.

Thanks in advance for your consideration and I look forward to your response. Esther EstherGriffith (talk) 20:25, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@EstherGriffith Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! Did I..? Ah yes, the Wiki Unseen artist, Esther Griffith.
Creating an acceptable WP-article without any experience in WP-editing is hard. It is recommended that you stick around awhile and edit existing articles to try to get a hang of this place. WP:TUTORIAL can help you with that, and learning how to add references correctly is essential, I can't stress this enough. Really. No good sources (WP:RS), no article content. This is even more important if you intend to write about living people, see WP:BLP. A WP-article about a person is supposed to be a summary of WP:RS independent of that person, WP:ABOUTSELF sources have a very limited use here.
If you have a subject in mind, read WP:BACKWARD. If you conclude "Yeah, I have those sources, no problem!", move on to WP:YFA. If the sources don't exist, you can't make a WP-article on that subject, so pick another subject. More at WP:N, the "rule" for "Can I make a WP-article about whatever-it-is?"
On pictures, WP and Commons, where we keep the "free" pictures, are both very strict on copyright. You can upload pictures you have taken yourself with your own camera, and so can other people, but there is a lot of devil in the details. The basic assumption is that any random pic you find online is under copyright and can't be used here (again, devil in the details). More details at Commons:Licensing and WP:A picture of you.
Hope this helps some. It may interest you that Wikipedians had some discussion about one of your pictures in 2022. When Wikipedians disagree, we must talk:

DYK for Elayne Harrington

[edit]

On 29 September 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Elayne Harrington, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that poet and rapper Elayne Harrington carried all her property in her bodhrán case while homeless in Dublin? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Elayne Harrington. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Elayne Harrington), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Question from Kassiani hymn (20:32, 7 October 2024)

[edit]

Hallo! Thank you for doing this. As I am new here and have lot of things to learn, I just wanted to apologize for not adding a link to the title of the book I added in the bibliography of the article "Yannis A. Papaioannou", also for the lack of a citation for a phrase in the main text. It will be done later on, eventually. --Kassiani hymn (talk) 20:32, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Of more importance

See my post on Bishonen's t/p. Apparently, WMF has agreed to disclose the details that were sought but in a "sealed cover". TrangaBellam (talk) 14:21, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Noted. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:28, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How it played out in the Court — this is a RS. Indeed, it appears that WMF's lawyer had agreed to share atleast some of the sought details in a sealed cover. Now, whether he was acting under the instruction of WMF is unknown, for now. TrangaBellam (talk) 14:57, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TrangaBellam I thought I could always ask: [1]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:35, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So, I think the response I posted (Googling weird combinations within quotes have its benefit!) at the VP thread is all that we will get. It will be crickets for a long while and I do not blame them. Time to get back to usual stuff. TrangaBellam (talk) 20:29, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TrangaBellam I thought this headline [2] was meant to be sarcastically humourous, but it doesn't seem so. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:14, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia news

[edit]

Hi Gråbergs Gråa Sång. I think that you collate interesting snippets about Wikipedia in the news. I've just noticed this comment from the UK Skripal enquiry. See this BBC link which says that the "most comprehensive source of information to local police was Wikipedia," in the early stages of the operation. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:37, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Michael D. Turnbull Collated. OOH I'm well aware that WP can do "current event" stuff quite well, the storming of the Capitol, Charlie Hedbo, Thai kids in a cave, various new wars etc. OTOH I feel that orgs like THE POLICE should have better, but in cases like this, maybe there are no better, we are that part of the cloud that is obsessed with reliable info. Still, The Madras High Court has directed the courts to refrain from using crowd-sourced websites such as Wikipedia in legal dispute resolution. Good advice, I think. Not that everybody listens. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:09, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Very off-topic, but if you haven't seen this [3][4] you might enjoy it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:12, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, per other media [5] it's not clear they looked at a specific article. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:41, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've been following this since it began. I noticed that you've contributed quite a bit to discussions etc so I thought this might be the best place to ask my question.

I'm slightly concerned that this case plus the case of name removal from the recent 2024 Kolkata rape and murder case that we (Wikipedia) might be in danger of losing some of our dedicated Indian editors.

It's too far fetched to say, at this stage, that it's a problem right now but I worry that it might become so in the future with internet censure and threats of disclosure. With the Kolkata Rape Case, obviously it ended with community concensus rather than any further court action in India, but it's still a small example of censorship.

We have enough problems retaining good editors as it is, we don't need to find our existing Indian editors dropping off the edge so to speak. I wondered what your thoughts were on this? (Or if anyone else wants to chime in). Knitsey (talk) 19:23, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Knitsey I won't be very surprised if India actually blocks WP at some point, from what I've read the position of their current law/courts seems incompatible with "us", at least judging by the Delhi coverage. If that happens, it happens. It might turn out like Pakistan, Turkey or China. If courts starts demanding to know who you are when you pretty much say whats in decent news-reporting, that will of course be a chilling effect. If the WMF should say "fine, we'll delete Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation by WP:OA", that would be very strange. It's not a bad article, and the event is quite interesting.
From what I've seen there's also this incomprehension that complicates thing, the judges ask stuff like "How could WP allow Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation to be published?" An editor was BOLD, that's how, we (can) publish first and ask questions later. If it would make them happier if we changed "judge threatened" to "judge said", I might be ok with that, though I've definitely seen "threatened" in sources. And the name thing, jeez. But from their POV there is no difference between what you and I do and what WMF does. Personally I'm pretty adamant that there is.
Well, I have no solutions atm, if they want to block us, they can block us. I assume you saw the Wikipedia:Village_pump_(WMF)#The_Asian_News_International_vs._Wikimedia_Foundation_situation thread. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:34, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Btw, I think the next Signpost is going to mention this, there's sometimes interesting discussions in the comments there. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:38, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've been following all the discussions at various places. I understand there have been 'mutterings' about a complete ban, which would be disappointment to say the least. The loss of a large percentage of experienced Indian editors could be damaging.
Hopefully it won't get to that. Knitsey (talk) 21:51, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Asmallbigworld (18:04, 18 October 2024)

[edit]

Hello - I was looking to update a page that was blocked. I am not sure who the original owner was, or their login. I wanted to rewrite the page so it followed the guidelines but wasn't sure if I need access to the previous version that was blocked or if the correct route would be to start a new one altogether. Thanks. --Asmallbigworld (talk) 18:04, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Asmallbigworld Are you talking about an article that exists now, or a deleted one, perhaps WP:SALTed? Either way, what is/was the name of the article? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:08, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång It was a company article about DataXoom and was written by Dataxoom2020. The block reason was it read like an advertisement. Asmallbigworld (talk) 18:13, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Asmallbigworld Ok. Well, you can try, but per what I see at [6], it might not be possible to find the sources to meet the demands of WP:NORG. If you have those sources, the recommended route is to use WP:Article Wizard. Without good sources, an article will not be accepted. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:28, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yahoo (see the entry at WP:RSP) fairly often posts stuff from elsewhere, it's marked at the top of the article. #1 is from TechRepublic, but it may be ok anyway. Trademag "articles" is sometimes targeted advertising, but this isn't obviously that.
2 looks like a press release, not independent.
3 Possibly ok-ish. I don't know anything about that site. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:34, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Got it. So, if I rewrote it and linked to some of those articles, it would still be rejected. Noted. I'll try again once more savory articles are available. Asmallbigworld (talk) 13:34, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Boston Globe article on Wikipedia's reliability

Edinburgh Council reviewing if Wikipedia library access is ‘still fit for purpose’

[edit]

Saw this and wondered if it was suitable for WP:PRESS. All it seems to show is that Edinburgh Council is not fit for purpose, because Wikipedia never has and never will promise that all of its articles are suitable for children to read. ♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:41, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at it and IMO it's borderline, so I didn't add it. I won't object if you do. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:29, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ZM

[edit]

I just remembered my concerns about that source you put in the McLellan article.[8] I'd like to remove it because the headline of the news article sensationalizes something we don't (for good reason) contextualize in the WP article. Would you oppose the removal? Should I raise it at BLPN? I'm in no rush and not looking for trouble. Thomas B (talk) 16:17, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm opposed since it's a good source, adding to WP:N. The WP:HEADLINE doesn't matter, and the context is what it is. You can raise it at BLPN and WP:APPNOTE the talkpage, or vice versa. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:13, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK. If you're opposed and think it's important, I think I'll leave it alone for now. Cheers, Thomas B (talk) 21:05, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding RSN

[edit]

Hello, Gråbergs Gråa Sång. I was in the middle of responding to you when you remove the thread at some point. While it seems like the situation might have been resolved, I figured I would still send this reply in case it changes anything.

So, this seems to be a birthday issue. Reviewing past discussions, E! Online has been discussed three times that I could find: 2008 where one person agreed it was reliable, 2009 where one person said it was reliable, and 2016 where one person said it was unreliable. Given the limited past discussion and that this is just regarding a date of birth, I have a suggestion. Rather than trying to determine if E! Online is or isn't reliable, we could use a verified social media account of an article subject instead. Perhaps, this Instagram post from January 13, 2021 might be enough to do the trick. --Super Goku V (talk) 08:22, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Super Goku V Did you see my ES:[9]? I am generally ok with WP:ABOUTSELF sources for WP:DOB, but your insta here is of the kind that makes me ask "Is he saying "Thank you all for the birthday wishes." the same day, the next day or the week after?" See Wikipedia_talk:Biographies_of_living_persons/Archive_48#Tweets_announcing_"Happy_birthday_to_me!_I'm_21_today!". Hope this makes an amount of sense. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:29, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see it now. I don't see how ABOUTSELF would apply as the author is not Tyler Henry, but if the situation is resolved, then I am fine with it. Regarding the Instagram post, I do understand your meaning. I hadn't considered that earlier about this post. (I did have a similar thought with a different post this year where I thought that one was too vague.) In any case, sorry for any trouble. --Super Goku V (talk) 08:41, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Super Goku V My take is that since E! is writing about their employee, he had an upcoming show there at the time, I'll consider it close enough to a profile page on a company website, and I would consider such a page ABOUTSELF-good.
Of course they might be lying about his age to make him older/younger and prettier, or to align his DOB with ancient prophesies, but that is not my default assumption. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:56, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
