Could you take a look at Discrimination please?

Hello there! I noticed you were active in counter-vandalism, and recent changes review; I've found some edits on Discrimination that do not follow WP:NDP however the offending editor is persistent, and I would rather not get flagged for edit-warring. Thanks! Stickymatch 01:04, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

@Stickymatch: Sorry, was typing a response to this but was a bit slow. Thanks for the message anyway. It looks like recent edits from the IP have been handled by other editors but I'll put the page on my watchlist and try to keep an eye on it. Edits like this are clearly disruptive and reportable to AIV if they continue. DanCherek (talk) 01:09, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
All good, I appreciate your reply in any case. Stickymatch 01:10, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Saint John's Methodist Episcopal Church

Hello Dan,

I do appreciate you sending me this information. I have to be completely honest and tell you that navigating Wikipedia is very challenging.

We as a church no longer go by that name. In fact, the Methodist Episcopal Church does not even exist anymore. We are also, no longer in the historic building.

This Wikipedia article is linked to a Facebook Community page that is not giving correct information when it comes to the name. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Do I need to create an entirely new article? I have already reached out to Facebook and they have said that the only thing for us to do is to update the information of the Wikipedia article that it is linked to. So any insight on how to continue would be very helpful! Thank you!

-Ali Devereaux, Youth Director @ St. John's United Methodist Church, Kingman, AZ — Preceding unsigned comment added by AliDevereaux (talkcontribs) 01:18, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

@AliDevereaux: Hi Ali, thanks for the message and sorry about the challenges of Wikipedia. I'll try to explain the concerns here. Each subject of an article on Wikipedia should have a claim of notability because it would be impossible to write an article about every single thing to ever exist. Something that distinguishes the 1917 church building described at Saint John's Methodist Episcopal Church (Kingman, Arizona) from millions of other churches in the world is that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In other words, it is the building that is currently presumed to be historic, not necessarily the congregation (your congregation) that used to be in that building and have now relocated. For that reason, if we suddenly change the whole page to be solely about the new church, there would likely not be a claim of notability anymore; Wikipedia is not simply a directory of organizations, and the page would likely be headed for deletion.
My suggestion is to try to locate a reliable, independent, secondary source (see WP:RS), such as a newspaper story, that documented the move to the new church, and to propose a change on the article's talk page to include some text in the current article that describes the fact that you're now in a new location, etc. If you haven't already, please read WP:PAID and WP:COI for Wikipedia's paid-editing guidelines, and thank you for disclosing your affiliation in your previous edits. I hope this is a helpful start, and I am happy to continue discussing anything that you might need clarification about. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) DanCherek (talk) 01:35, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Whoever is the admin in charge of a Facebook page or group — typically someone affiliated with the organization, or church in this case — has the ability to change the details of that page or group. I am not sure why that's not the case with your situation. DanCherek (talk) 01:42, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

@DanCherek

Thank you for responding so quickly! We will begin to work on this and getting the proper sources to add to the talk page. I know that this building is currently being used for the Mohave County Public Defender, does this affect the process in anyway? Again, please excuse my lack of Wikipedia knowledge! This is a whole new ball game for me! :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by AliDevereaux (talkcontribs) 01:49, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

@AliDevereaux: No problem. I know Wikipedia can be tough to navigate. We try to summarize what reliable sources say about a given topic, and ideally every fact in every article is backed up by a cited source, so if the public defender's use of the building has been reported, I think it would be fine to mention, but it does need to be verifiable as opposed to originating from your (or anyone else's) personal knowledge. Using Wikipedia a confusing process. But I thought I would alert you to this useful addition to Mr. Vogler's biography.76.176.201.201 (talk) 18:58, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

Rigatoni day

Hi Dan, I believe you may have removed my entry about rigatoni day under the topic of rigatoni. It may have appeared to be vandalism because of its odd nature as an event but I can assure you that it is in fact real. I have listed sources below.

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/eat-a-bowl-of-rigatoni-pasta https://tiktokmerch.com/blogs/tiktok-trends/eat-a-bowl-of-rigatoni-pasta-on-may-24-2021-tiktok-trend https://www.reddit.com/r/teenagers/comments/epafan/eat_a_bowl_of_rigatoni_pasta_on_may_24th_2021/ https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/rigatoni-pasta-tiktok-users-counting-172157221.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvLnVrLw&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAEj2DyIwogEtqDU7nzGspX2IDshJGM-0wshcj0Ib2oau_o_POk8nHFIHr9gGxiX4rcPZUTpM_aQChH7sWIKogBmxFXdL9DlTdwERzYKl1YPqtKBI93V-FpuW3qWx3AJ01RM7laZ923btY-zoLTXhmKFVOL0ioZBt3l6-jLxTE4ep

If the information was removed for another reason I would appreciate knowing what it is, however if it was purely that it appeared to be misinformation, spam or vandalism I hope this cleared up any questions.

Thanks82.20.64.66 (talk) 12:40, 24 May 2021 (UTC)r

Hi there. It was originally added completely without sources; however, it shouldn't be in the article anyway because it would give undue weight to a random TikTok meme that is not particularly important to the topic of rigatoni in general. Hope that helps. DanCherek (talk) 12:45, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.82.51.127 (talk) 03:18, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi there. The primary reason I undid the edit was that there was no source when you posted it the first time. Thanks for linking those sources here. However, I suggest thinking about this article in the grander scheme of things. A lot of newsworthy things happen each and every day, but not all of them will merit inclusion in an encyclopedic entry. (The ten-year test is a helpful thought experiment.) Regardless, you are welcome to propose the change on the article's talk page at Talk:Huntington Beach, California and see if you can gain consensus for its addition to the article. That's the BOLD, revert, discuss cycle — you made an edit, it was undone by another user (Binksternet), and then a discussion can be opened to decide whether the proposed change would be worth keeping. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions. DanCherek (talk) 03:27, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Roswell Daily Record, Inc.

Dear Dan, My name is Svitlana Anderson, and I am the attorney who represents Roswell Daily Record, Inc. in intellectual property matters in the U.S. and internationally. I understand that as an admin for Wiki, you have prohibited certain changes to the Roswell Daily Record’s page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roswell_Daily_Record. I believe you have denied changes submitted by an employee of Roswell Daily Record reflecting an indication of the current and valid Federal trademark rights to the mark “Roswell Daily Record”, i.e., “R” in circle. Also, I believe you have removed the following language referring to the source of the Federally protected trademark rights: “Roswell Daily Record and Roswell Daily Record (Stylized) are registered trademarks of Roswell Daily Record, Inc. (U.S. Trademark Registration Nos. 5,275,682 and 5,275,687).” In the subsequent email exchange between you and the employee of Roswell Daily Record you have indicated that you prefer to communicate through your “talk” page. Thus, I am writing to you to see what information and/or documents you need to make the requested changes to reflect the Federally protected trademark rights of the Roswell Daily Record. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Svitlana Anderson, Esq. Peacock Law P.C. P.O. @PeacockLawRoswell: Hi Svitlana, lots to unpack here. I'll respond to each of your points:
  • I am not an administrator on Wikipedia, but editors are generally allowed to edit any article, and no one "owns" an article (particularly not the subject of the article).
  • I removed the registered trademark symbol in accordance with Wikipedia's Manual of Style, which says Do not use the ™ and ® symbols, or similar, in either article text or citations, unless unavoidably necessary for context. It's not unavoidably necessary for context in this case. For similar reasons, articles like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal do not use the registered trademark symbols either.
  • I have not communicated with any employees of Roswell Daily Record via email, and any email exchange that you've had did not involve me in any way. It is true, though, that I prefer to communicate through my talk page. (@Nick Moyes: do you know anything about this? This presumably relates to the Rdraric account.)
  • Your username "PeacockLawRoswell" is a violation of Wikipedia's username policy because it is the name of a law firm and implies shared use. Please visit Special:GlobalRenameRequest and request a new username that identifies you individually, such as "Svitlana at PeacockLawRoswell", or create a new account that complies with the username policy.
Let me know if you have further questions. DanCherek (talk) 23:26, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
@PeacockLawRoswell: As I seem to have been 'pinged' here (and am an administrator), let me try to assist you.
  • Firstly, DanCherek is quite right in their reply to you (including the point about your username - but I will overlook that in the spirit of attempting good communication with you).
  • It looks like I was the admin who gave a WP:SOFTBLOCK to Rdraric, simply for a small breach of our policy whereby we require one person to have one account, and not to imply shared use, as happened with their edits. They have not been "prohibited" from making changes to that article (though see advice below); they were blocked per WP:SHAREDACCOUNT as they spoke using the collective term "our", suggesting more than one person has access to that account. Advice on editing again was given on their talk page.
  • They (and you) are free to choose a better account name, but we do very strongly discourage people working for an organisation to attempt to edit the article about that body. This is a clear Conflict of Interest, and we advise that they make a specific WP:EDITREQUEST on the relevant article's talk page, stating clearly what changes they would like to see, and asking for good citations to back it up.
  • Whilst Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation takes copyright very seriously, we do write about Notable topics in an encyclopaedic manner, not a legal one. That means that we never fluff up titles or trademarked names when simply collating reliably published sources about that subject just because the organisation itself has an internal convention to normally put the ™ or ® symbols or other legalese on its own literature. So the removal of that type of superfluous content added by Rdraric was quite justified, and any other editor here would do precisely the same should it ever be reinserted. If that was the sole issue that caused you to come here, then I am sorry to disappoint you and your client, as we will not be altering articles in that way, just to suit a subjects wishes. So, on that specific issue, I don't think any other information or documentation will be needed from you.
  • But was there any other issue we can help you with? If so, it would really be preferable to make that WP:EDITREQUEST on the article talk page, as suggested above, so that all editors with an interest in the article on Roswell Daily Record can see it.
  • Personally, my view (without doing WP:BEFORE) is that this tiny newspaper does not meet our Notability Criteria, and it would be better to have it as a simple WP:REDIRECT to the article on the Roswell incident.
  • Finally, two smaller points to draw your attention to: You wrote: "Furthermore, the communication is confidential and intended only for the named recipient.", but be advised that you actually agreed to release your text under a Creative Commons (CC-BY-SA) licence, per the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use when you created this account to communicate here. Of course, should you or your client not be happy with the response I or other editors give you, please continue to discuss in the constructive manner you have above, as this is very helpful. Nothing prevents legal action ever being taken against anyone, but this policy does mean that editing rights of a user are withdrawn should legal threats be made and whilst those matters are outstanding and are being dealt with by the Wikimedia Foundation.
I'm sorry if my response does not quite conform to your client's desires, Svitlana, but I hope my reply has been of some assistance in helping explain how Wikipedia operates, and in supporting DanCherek's removal of certain types of content. I'll try to clarify anything further if you need me to, and I'm sure Dan will ping me if you do. Regards from the UK, Nick Moyes (talk) 00:52, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

Tadia Toussaint

Hi, why was this not approved? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Tadia_Toussaint 15:59, 29 May 2021 (UTC)~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fembelle (talkcontribs)

Hi Fembelle, welcome to Wikipedia! In short, the draft needs to demonstrate notability of the subject before it can be accepted, and that means references that show significant coverage of Toussaint in multiple reliable, independent sources. Interviews like the Haitian Times source don't really count towards notability, and the Grungecake source is too short to qualify as significant coverage. Furthermore, since this is a biography of a living person, information in the article should be cited to high-quality, reliable sources. At present, there are many sections in the draft that are entirely unsourced. Feel free to continue to work on it and resubmit when you feel that you have addressed these issues, after which another reviewer will evaluate it. Thanks and let me know if you have any questions. OpenTopography wiki page

Hi Dan, thanks for reviewing the OpenTopography wikipedia article. Im a bit confused by the review. I see other projects like OpenTopohtaphy on wikipedia with even less references - e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNAVCO or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCSA_Brown_Dog. I have put in references from NSF as well as independent pubs like GIS Geography. I realize its not as long as the others but my aim was to have a page that the earth science community who are users of opentopography can then expand on. Can you please clarify what I need to update to make it eligible? Thank you

Vnandigam (talk) 16:37, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi Vnandigam, welcome to Wikipedia and thanks for the message. I declined the draft because the current references don't demonstrate coverage in multiple reliable, independent sources. This is the general standard by which notability is evaluated on Wikipedia. For example, references #2, #3, and #11 are directly connected to OpenTopography's institution and website, and references #4 through #7 are citations related to datasets that OpenTopography provides, but don't constitute significant coverage themselves. Furthermore, the article should not be written in a way that sounds like it's advertising the various features of OpenTopography. Feel free to address these issues and resubmit, after which another reviewer will evaluate the draft. Note that drafts are typically reviewed on their own merits, not in comparison to other articles; you are welcome to improve the other articles you mentioned with better references or nominate them for deletion if you don't think they're notable. Finally, if you have a conflict of interest related to OpenTopography, please read the guidelines at WP:COI and follow the appropriate instructions. Let me know if you have any questions. From a quick glance, I would additionally recommend removing the external links to YouTube from the article body (see WP:ELNO) and either sourcing or removing statements like After playing the trombone for 9 years, she taught herself to play the piano. When you feel that you have adequately resolved all issues, you can click "Resubmit" to return it to the review feed. As a personal practice, I very rarely review the same draft twice, so I will leave it to another reviewer in case they see something I may have missed. In the meantime, I will leave a welcome message with some helpful links on your talk page, and feel free to seek additional guidance from the volunteers at the Teahouse. DanCherek (talk) 17:37, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Just making sure

Hi DanCherek, today I’ve gone on a bit of a spree— going through the drafts and nominating the vandalistic and promotional ones for speedy deletion. In the past, I’ve gotten into trouble for doing things I thought were right but ended up being wrong (e.g. deleting red links). I just wanted to know, am I doing the right thing in this case? Feel free to go through my contributions and let me know what you think. Thanks, 🐍Helen🐍 18:31, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Hey Helen, hope you're doing well! Thanks for the message. Yes, vandalism drafts can be tagged as G3 and super promotional drafts can be tagged as G11. For the latter, keep in mind that drafts have a little bit more leeway than mainspace articles, since draftspace is designed for issues to be worked out. If only part of the draft contains promotional language that can be simply removed, it might be better to do that. If the entire draft would require a fundamental rewrite (like the whole thing is just a blatant advertisement), then fine to tag for speedy deletion. In your Twinkle preferences, it may be helpful to check the box that says "Keep a log in userspace of all CSD nominations" — this will automatically log all of your Twinkle CSD tags at a page like User:DanCherek/CSD log so you can go back and look at them later and see if any were declined. Hope that helps! DanCherek (talk) 18:37, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
Also, I don't think it's necessary to tag things lke Draft:JUNAID HABIB AHMED because it doesn't fit any of the speedy deletion criteria (I've never specified a custom reason), and abandoned drafts like that are typically deleted by WP:G13 after six months of no edits anyway, so it doesn't do any harm to let them sit in draftspace. Babak Khorramdin (director)

Hi DanCherek. You mentioned something on my user talk page about Khadempour322 and machine translations; so, I'm wondering if you wouldn't mind checking Babak Khorramdin (director) for something similar when you've got some spare time. I asked Fastily about the article, and (as I suspected) G5 speedy deletion probably doesn't apply in this case. I know zero about the subject matter, but an administrator over at Commons seems to think the murder of Khorramdin might be more notable than Khorradim himself. So, if the article can be kept but only needs to be rewritten, then all the copyvios which might be hidden in older versions would need to be cleaned up. I can ask an admin who does this type of things to check the article, but a revision deletion might not be necessary if all that's need is cleanup per WP:RIA. Of course, if the article is deleted, then none of this matters. If you're assessment is that the article can't be saved, then I think the only option is going to be WP:AFD (maybe WP:PROD); on the other hand, if you feel the article just needs fixing and wouldn't mind helping to figure out how much copyvio stuff needs to be cleaned out, then I can ask as some WikiProjects to see whether someone has any ideas on how to fix it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:41, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: Sorry, I don't read Persian and am not confident about assessing the article's notability, so will leave it in the NPP queue for now. Though it is a machine translation (which I could tell by going to fa:بابک خرمدین (کارگردان) and clicking Google Translate), Khadempour322 actually provided proper attribution when they initially created the article (Special:Diff/1024012509), in that they indicated that the article was translated from the fawiki article which they linked to in the edit summary. That's all that's required per WP:TFOLWP, though I'll go ahead and add {{Translated page}} to the talk page as well just for extra clarity; nothing needs to be "cleaned out" in terms of complying with copyright in this case. I'm not actually sure if I answered any of your questions or if I'm just telling you things that you already know, so let me know if the latter is the case. DanCherek (talk) 01:56, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
I missed the attribution in the edit summary and that is probably more than sufficient for attribution, but thanks for adding the "Translated page" template. Everything should be OK now from a copyright standpoint. As for the other stuff, I'll put it to some WikiProjects and see if they have any ideas. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:01, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
Sounds good, thanks! DanCherek (talk) 03:07, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
I posted something about this at WT:IRAN so perhaps someone who belongs to that WikiProject will have a suggestion on what to do with the article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:53, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Useful templates

Re your comment at UAA: I was wondering who that'd turn out to be. Such a clear sleeper pattern. Thanks for clearing that up. P.S.: Are you aware of {{noping}} and {{noping2}}? Very useful in situations like these, lest one bait the trolls. -- Tamzin (she/they) | o toki tawa mi. 22:49, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

@Tamzin: Thanks. Does {{user}} ping the user? I thought it didn't, as opposed to {{u}}, but I might be mistaken. Probably time for me to turn on that preference that lets me know when a ping goes through... DanCherek (talk) 23:07, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
Actually, just noticed that {{noping2}} must be the equivalent of that, so that's a yes to my own question. Thanks for the tip! DanCherek (talk) 23:19, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
(edit conflict) My understanding is that any template that, when fully expanded, contains [[User:<anyone>]], with or without piping, pings that user, so long as it appears:
  1. On a new line
  2. That contains your signature (or technically any link to your username, I think, but there's bugs with the whole sig thing, which is why I can no longer have a parser in my sig)
To my knowledge, {{noping}} templates and a few vandalism specific ones like {{checkuser}} are the only ones that deliberately hack their way around that. Anything else will go through. I definitely recommend using that preference. I find it very helpful. User:Example is pingable, so you can always test with that in your sandbox.
P.S. Some interesting stuff at T66778, including a suggestion I have for reworking this. -- Tamzin (she/they) | o toki tawa mi. 23:29, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
Whoa, learning so much — including the existence of Special:ExpandTemplates! Thanks for the information and links. DanCherek (talk) 23:32, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

Love jihad

Why you write incorrect information about this topic The correct one is....... Love jihad means when one causes the other to convert to Islam through fake love then intruding to marriage. In this process they convert the non-Muslim with reasons like Muslim men cannot marry polytheistic women unless she converts as per their religious rules. This practice is commonly seen as Muslim men pretending to be in love with hindu women with an intention of converting them . Radical groups often use this propaganda where they are not majority in any nations like in India. In many nations like Pakistan Bangladesh Muslim men forcefully convert & marry Hindus perticularly hindus taking advantage of their majority in society. It can be observed that their motto is universal as they usually marry more than one wife, produce too many children irrespective of their financial circumstances, give radical teaching and target on being majority to rule society by physical domination. Love Jihad is no conspiracy theory as there are thousands of love jihad cases reported in India Me kon hu (talk) 15:40, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

(Copied from the FAQ at Talk:Love Jihad) The consensus of high-quality academic sources is that Love Jihad is a conspiracy theory or fabricated claim. Please see Special:Permalink/1007713474 § cite note-conspiracy theory-15 for the list. Wikipedia articles are based on reliable sources, and not original research. @OaxacaGenius: The text you just added was again copied from [4]. Please stop copying text from that website into the article, it will have to be removed and redacted every time because it is a copyright violation. You need to identify reliable sources about Reynolds and summarize information in your own words. DanCherek (talk) 15:54, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
Every article begins with a biography, see Kevin Peraza, also the references are reliable red bull and https://rideukbmx.com/people/garrett-reynolds he still does not understand it will be that the athlete is a ghost.OaxacaGenius (talk) 15:57, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
Sure, but the biography can't be copied from elsewhere if it creates a copyright violation. You will need to write the article in your own words. DanCherek (talk) 16:27, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
I am improving the article could you give a help please. OaxacaGenius (talk) 17:11, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
You are on the right track — thanks for not copying verbatim from sources — but this is a blog and is not considered a reliable source for referencing a biography of a living person. Apologies, I'm a bit busy elsewhere and can't commit time to work on the article directly. DanCherek (talk) 17:23, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

Textile Research Centre

Dear Dan Cherek, many thanks for your work on the entry for the Textile Research Centre in Leiden, the Netherlands, and my apologies for the mistakes and errors I made yesterday. Yes, there may be a conflict of interest, since I am sideways attached to the TRC.

Yesterday I read the entry, and noticed it was hopelessly out of date. I made various changes and additions, trying to be objective and factual. Forgive me for being 'new' to the editing of texts. I only made an account yesterday. As for copyright infringements for TRC Needles, yes, I copied the texts straight from the TRC website. Not good, I now realise (I naively thought it would not matter). I can of course shorten it and rephrase the text.

As the text stands now, it still has a list of exhibitions around 2010, which is not very useful. I suggested a list with the exhibitions between 2015 and 2021. I also suggested a list with online exhibitions.

Again, I fully understand you have your rules and must stick to them in order to uphold objectivity etc.

I hope this message will reach you or anyone else helping with his wonderful enterprise,

Willemvogelsang (talk) 10:49, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Willemvogelsang, thanks for the message. A couple things: first, if you expect to receive compensation for any contribution you make, please provide the proper disclosure according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY — that means on your user page, on the talk page of the article, or in your edit summaries. Be sure to read the policies and guidelines on paid editing and conflicts of interest.
Second, Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable, independent, secondary sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself. For that reason, basing most of an article on an organization or institute's "About Us" page isn't appropriate either. The article has been tagged for years for overreliance on primary sources, and that is still an issue with its current state. Adding more would just make it worse. Finally, I reversed the edit to the exhibitions because it replaced a sourced list with inline citations, with an unsourced one.
I recommend suggesting any future edits that you'd like to make on the talk page of the article, using edit requests. You may find the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard helpful. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 11:56, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Dear Dan Cherek, thanks for your prompt reply. I will see what I can do, but it may take some time. Is it an idea to delete the full entry? It looks a bit silly as it stands now, and it really is not very important. Yesterday I just wanted to update a text that was I think some ten years out of date ... Anyhow, does not matter. I wish you all success with your work, no hard feelings, Willem Vogelsang Willemvogelsang (talk) 12:22, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

If you don't think the institute is notable by Wikipedia's standards, you are welcome to make a case for its deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, but please don't nominate it just to make a point. Coverage such as this and this points to its notability. DanCherek (talk) 12:29, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Picture Removed for Vivian Moreno

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the update. My name is Chris Jonsmyr and I work for Councilmember Vivian Moreno in the City of San Diego. The picture I submitted as part of Vivian Moreno's Wikipedia profile is public domain. It was taken by me, for the City of San Diego. All of the work we publish is required to be public domain under California law. Please review the copyright claim and re-add the picture if possible, at the request of my boss: Councilmember Vivian Moreno.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Norseman91 (talkcontribs) 15:58, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

@Norseman91: Hi Chris, thanks for the message! I initially nominated the image for deletion because the source website had a copyright symbol, but looking more closely I indeed see that it may be in the public domain, according to this. Sorry about that. The image has already been deleted from Wikimedia Commons by an administrator, so I can't restore it myself, but I have added a message on their talk page to ask them how to proceed: commons:User talk:Túrelio#File:Official VM Council picture.jpg. DanCherek (talk) 16:26, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
@Norseman91: The image has now been undeleted. Again, apologies for the mix-up. Thank you for contributing the image to the article. (Addendum: since you are editing topics related to your employer, please take a moment to read WP:Conflict of interest#Paid editors in order to provide the proper disclosure. Thanks!) DanCherek (talk) 19:25, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Oregon Catholic Press wikipedia page

Hi DanCherek, I made some updates to Oregon Catholic Press's "History" section, but it got flagged for copyrighted content. I work at OCP and we own any copyrights that may have caused you to flag my additions. Please let me know what you need from me to prove copyright ownership and I'll be sure to get you proof of ownership. Or if there's anything about the text that was incorrectly uploaded please let me know. Thank you Eireish (talk) 23:57, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

@Eireish: Hello, and thanks for the message. First and foremost, since you have been editing the article of your employer, please read WP:Conflict of interest#Paid editors and provide the proper disclosure as required by Wikipedia's policies, and note that paid editors are strongly discouraged from editing affected articles directly, but may propose changes on talk pages by using the {{request edit}} template so that they can be peer reviewed.
Previously published content may be released by the copyright owner into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license by following the instructions at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. I will point out, however, that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable, independent, secondary sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself. For that reason, basing most of an article on a company's own "History" page isn't appropriate either. The article has been tagged for years for overreliance on primary sources, and adding more would just make it worse. Instead, I suggest identifying coverage of OCP's history in reliable sources that are independent of the company. DanCherek (talk) 00:05, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Copyrighted material on Philly D.A. page

Hi Dan,

I'll change the language.

Thanks! Ted Passon — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tedpasson (talkcontribs) 03:10, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

@Tedpasson: Hi Ted! Thanks for the message and for your work on the series. Because the text has been published on the Philly D.A. website with a copyright notice, we can't include it "as is" without verifying that it is actually compatibly licensed. Previously published content can be used if it has been released by the copyright owner into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information and instructions on how to do that. I know this can seem bureaucratic, but it helps protect copyright owners just in case (for example, while I trust you are Ted Passon, the reality is that anyone could have created an account named "Tedpasson"). Additionally, since you are editing the article of your show, please take a moment to read the WP:Conflict of interest guideline. Hope that makes sense! DanCherek (talk) 03:20, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
Noting that this was in response to your original message; I hit "Publish" before I saw the change. DanCherek (talk) 03:21, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

HI DanCherek

I need you to help me in creating an approved article is needed urgently sir/ma. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Habidex jaz (talkcontribs) 08:47, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

@Habidex jaz: I'm guessing this is about Draft:Mohammad Wahid ujjal, which was rejected because it is pure advertising about a non-notable subject. Why is the article needed urgently? Please note that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not an avenue for promotion, and that you should read WP:COI if you have a conflict of interest, financial or otherwise, regarding the article subject. Feel free to ask for further clarification here or at the Teahouse. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 11:26, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

declining for not meeting threshold of notoriety

Hi DanCherek! What to do when a new entry is being declined for not meeting threshold but it seems odd? Trying to write one for Jennifer V. Evans (which you kindly commented on) but same person keeps declining it. How to navigate? Mononoke99 (talk) 10:32, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

@Mononoke99: I did a quick search and believe that she is notable based on academic reviews of her published work. It needs a little bit of cleanup but I will do that and move it to mainspace shortly. Thanks for the message! DanCherek (talk) 11:48, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

@EditWiki45: It looks like you deleted the draft and created it directly in mainspace, which I probably wouldn't have advised given the multiple WP:BLP issues with the draft version. It looks like a patroller has moved the article back to draftspace, where I would encourage you to make sure everything is properly referenced to reliable sources before resubmitting for review. DYK for Homobiles

On 17 July 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Homobiles, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Homobiles has been called "Uber for drag queens"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Homobiles. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Homobiles), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Maybe not

This removal may not be correct. Although the material has a copyright notice at the bottom, note that if you click on copyright you are brought to:

https://www.chiefscientist.qld.gov.au/legals/copyright

Which appears to be an acceptable license.--S Philbrick(Talk) 00:47, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

@Sphilbrick: Thanks for the catch. I saw the copyright symbol on the website but didn't click through to see that they license material under a compatible license. Edit on X Corps (India)

Regarding the removal of my edit to X Corps (India). The part which has been removed has been taken from Indian Army Official website, which has been acknowledged in the reference. The copyright policy of the website can be seen here - [5] If you agree with my views, please revert your edit. Thanks Akk7a (talk) 06:21, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Akk7a. That website's copyright policy places limitations on how the material can be used or modified in the future. You were reproducing the text accurately at the X Corps (India) article, but putting it on Wikipedia licenses it under CC BY-SA 3.0, which allows anyone to create any derivative work using that text (with attribution). Wikipedia is generally not compatible with licenses that include such restrictions (see WP:COMPLIC), which is why I removed the text. Hope that makes sense. DanCherek (talk) 11:52, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks DanCherek, I will rewrite it. Akk7a (talk) 09:11, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Draft: Veteran

Hi , this is in regard with the message you left in my talk page . I am confused whether the page Draft:Liluah Veteran (Eng. Med.) School is now on the main page or not because I have not submitted the draft page for verification yet so I was in the dilemma that this page is not visible to others. I am really sorry for the activities , I was experimenting there as I thought it is only visible to me. Pls clear the page status now and whether it is there on main page or not. Thank you. I want to know whether this is in the main page or not ? This is me Jarvis (talk) 15:35, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

@This is me Jarvis: Because it is a draft, it is not in mainspace. But your edits are still visible to anyone, as with all edits on Wikipedia. What were you trying to test with edits like Special:Diff/1034556344? DanCherek (talk) 15:38, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Yeah I am sorry for the inconvenience caused . Thank you

This is me Jarvis (talk) 15:40, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Dan is absolutely right but if I might add a small point of clarification — working in draft space is the right place to work on material that's not quite ready for main space but it is visible to any editor in Wikipedia. Draft space is noindexed, which means people outside Wikipedia using a search engine aren't going to stumble upon the draft in progress, so sometimes people think of draft material is being "invisible", but it's only invisible to searches in external search engines. Editors and even the general public can see the material if they know where to look.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:11, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

thank you for your assistance. all has been corrected, with notations, and written by the author of the wiki article. Please let me know if i can help in any other way — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.230.8.94 (talk) 15:39, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi IP. The copyrighted material has been removed, but the draft does not contain reliable sources that indicate the group's notability. Please note that the article was previously deleted after a discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sin City Deciples, so any resubmitted drafts will have to address the concerns raised there. DanCherek (talk) 15:54, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

I think it's a shame that you have erased all my work because of copyright. An official report such as the GEO cannot be reworded. It was referenced as the GEO-6 report already but if you really wish to go the extra mile why don't you just add the reference rather than erase the entire entry? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cinanina (talkcontribs) 16:13, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

@Cinanina: Sorry, but since the source material is copyrighted, it can't be copy-and-pasted into Wikipedia. We can't quote the entire report in its entirety either, because that would not be in accordance with Wikipedia's non-free content criteria, specifically #1: Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose. In this case, the free equivalent would to write original prose summarizing the report, as there is no reason why the article needs to use the GEO's specific text. Topic: Sayeed Abubakar (Poet)

Dear DanCherek, Thank you very much for your advice. Actually I am a very new editor in this line. I thought that the literary life of Sayeed Abubakar given in PoemHunter will help enrich my article. I am trying my best to improve this article everyday. If you have any suggestion for me so that this article may not be deleted, please tell me. Sincerely yours, Shish Mohammad Jakaria. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shish Mohammad Jakaria (talkcontribs) 07:41, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Shish Mohammad Jakaria — I'm not very familiar with the topic, but the article has been put up for deletion because the nominator wasn't able to identify significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. That is generally Wikipedia's standard by which topics are deemed to be notable, so you should see if there are any journals, news articles, etc. that discuss him in more detail. If not, the article may be deleted. Please note that whatever you do, you should summarize information in your own words, rather than copy directly from sources. Thanks! Socio-Economic Planning Sciences

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your messages. Please note that I was trying to update the wikipedia page for socio-economic planning sciences current in my role as it senior associate editor. I understand the copyright issues you point. Hopefully I can still include relevant links at the very least for the benefit of the user community.

Sincerely, Jomon A. Paul Jpaul17 (talk) 02:12, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Jpaul17, it sounds like you have a conflict of interest (COI) with respect to this article. See the conflict of interest guideline for more information. Because of this, you are encouraged to:
Adding a dozen external links to the submission process, call for papers, etc. isn't really appropriate for a Wikipedia article — the link to the official website is sufficient. Wikipedia:External links is the full guideline on external links to Wikipedia articles. Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 02:19, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your message. I understand. The page with the current contents is fine in that case. I will appreciate if the inserts that mention copyvios report etc. be removed unless it has to go through a review process by another entity. I appreciate any inputs.

Sincerely, Jomon A. Paul

Jpaul17 (talk) 02:26, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

@Jpaul17: Thank you! I appreciate your understanding. A Wikipedia administrator will come by shortly to hide the copyrighted material from the page history and they will remove the banner at that point; I expect it will be handled in a few hours if not sooner. Let me know if you have any other questions. DanCherek (talk) 02:30, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Regarding declined submission

Hello Dan,

This is regarding declined submission for: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Henry_Childs_II

The reason given is "This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article".

However, the following link about the subject is from the official website of the Government: https://www.mbda.gov/news/press-releases/2018/09/us-secretary-commerce-announces-henry-childs-ii-national-director

The subject is actually the national director of the Minority Business Development Agency, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. This is reiterated on the following listed reference: https://middlemarketgrowth.org/a-qualified-opinion-henry-childs-ii/

As I am new to Wikipedia, please explain your reasons for not considering the above two links.

Thanks for your contributions!

Wickedwiki2 (talk) 15:17, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

@Wickedwiki2: Welcome to Wikipedia! I'm happy to explain. Notability on Wikipedia is generally assessed by the extent of significant coverage that a subject has received in reliable, independent secondary sources. Your first link is a press release and is clearly labeled as such, so it is not considered an independent source — it comes from the agency associated with Childs. The second link is an interview and essentially all of the text on that page originates from Childs himself, and so again it is not an independent source that would contribute to an argument for notability. You may wish to read Wikipedia:Reliable sources for more information on expectations for sourcing, particularly in a biography of a living person. Because the draft's references at the time did not demonstrate that the notability threshold was met, I declined the draft. Please note that a decline means that the subject may be notable, but additional work is needed to demonstrate that — I intentionally did not select the reject option which is designed for drafts that have essentially zero chances of ever being accepted. Hope that helps. DanCherek (talk) 15:28, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

Makes sense, thanks for the clarifications. Wickedwiki2 (talk) 15:36, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

Pipe Bands Australia

Hi Dan,

I've added content to Draft:Pipe Bands Australia. You previously erased nearly all of it. Please note I am the author of the content you noted as being copyright. It has been published with legal authority. Any assistance you can offer in publishing the article would be appreciated. Joel.ONeal (talk) 14:31, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

@Joel.ONeal: Welcome to Wikipedia! The material was preemptively removed due to the copyright notice on the website. Check out Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on how to release material under a compatible license, which allows anyone to share, distribute, transmit, and adapt your work, even commercially. Please note that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable, independent secondary sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself, and so basing most of an article on an organization's "About Us" page may not necessarily be appropriate. DanCherek (talk) 14:38, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks Dan, its a volunteer organisation dedicated to assisting Bagpipe Bands... there's no other media out there on the subject...it's hardly a political movement. I'm just trying to accurately created a third party record of it's history... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joel.ONeal (talkcontribs) 14:43, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

@Joel.ONeal: Sure, I understand and appreciate your work on the subject. The primary issue here is copyright. The bottom of your website reads "© 1960–2021 Pipe Bands Australia" which protects your work from being copied elsewhere, and so that is an issue when the text is copied to Wikipedia. You will need to follow the instructions in the link I provided above or the text may be removed again. The second issue is notability, which is generally assessed by the extent of significant coverage that a subject has received in reliable, independent secondary sources. If the entire draft is based on a primary source (in this case Pipe Bands Australia's own website), it is exceedingly unlikely to be accepted. You should summarize information from any coverage that the group has received in reliable sources such as newspapers, magazines, etc. DanCherek (talk) 14:50, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Dan, Apologies if I'm not replying correctly, getting my head around this format and platform. I take you're point and I'll work on the release of copyright. The website copyright is to protect against unsolicited copyright where as this is approved and realistically the same author. Citing it is proving difficult as its based on contributions from members of the wider community as not a lot of records exist from the time... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joel.ONeal (talkcontribs) 23:14, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Yes, I understand. Unfortunately, the threshold of notability has to be set somewhere, and significant coverage in independent sources is how that is determined on Wikipedia. Groups without that kind of coverage in reliable sources should first seek it out, and then a good article could be written based on those sources. DanCherek (talk) 23:20, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Draft:Trobar de Morte

Hi DanCherek,

Thank you for your revision. The point is that I'm a member of the band, we have written all this information, the copyrigth doesn't belong to anybody but ourselves and there isn't an original source. So, could you tell me the correct way to express that information in order to achieve that the content and the draft be published? And sorry for our lack of experience, this is the first time we edit or create something in Wikipedia. Thank you!!

Penumbrator (talk) 10:49, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Carlos

@Penumbrator: Welcome to Wikipedia! The material has been redacted due to the copyright notice on the website — see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on how to release material under a compatible license, but note that it allows anyone to share, distribute, transmit, and adapt the text, even commercially. I will also add that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable, independent sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself, and so basing most of an article on your band's website rather than secondary sources would not be desirable either. Finally, since you have a conflict of interest (COI) with regards to the subject you are writing about, please read the conflict of interest guidelines for best practices, including how to disclose a COI. Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 11:13, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Andrew Webster page

Hi There Dan,

I submitted a page for my father, who is a Professor of Sociology and has terminal cancer so was keen to create a wiki page.

We initially copied and pasted a section from the York university website (where he was Dean) which we intended to edit but I submitted the page. You understandably rejected the page due to copyright.

We have now changed the page and have written it ourselves and are trying to resubmit it but I cant work out how.

This is the updated page we are talking about-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Andrew_Webster

I look forward to hearing from you on how we can get this live on the amazing Wikipedia.

Many thanks

@Qotchin: Hi Matt, thanks for the message and I'm very sorry to hear about your father's cancer. I took a look and he is certainly notable enough for an article. I will take some time to update the draft's formatting and references so that it is more consistent with other articles and then accept the draft. I'll ping you again when I'm done! @Qotchin:  Done, now at Andrew Webster (sociologist). Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for your work on the article. DanCherek (talk) 21:01, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks :) StjepanHR (talk) 12:37, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

I think you're placing a copyright violation on this article is a very heavy-handed move and frankly a waste of an admin's time to review. Why not re-write the text and delete/reference the offending link. It is not even clear here [unless I'm missing something] as to whether the web-page you've linked for CV took text from Wikipedia in the first place. I just don't understand your approach, you've left all the work to other editors to re-write his early life and redact a seemingly good reference rather than write it in in a way that doesn't violate CV. Mountaincirquetalk 15:09, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

@Mountaincirque: I strongly disagree — I don't think it's a waste of time for an administrator to redact a large amount of text copied verbatim from a copyrighted source, which is a violation of Wikipedia's policy. It was added only six minutes before I removed it so no, it's not reverse copying from Wikipedia. A very small group of editors deal with dozens of copyright violations that are introduced every day, and it is not and should not be incumbent upon them to spend hours rewriting every affected article. I've retained the URL in my edit summary so that anyone who is interested in the article is able to see it as a viable reference in the future. DanCherek (talk) 15:21, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

Great work

Great work on the copyvios from here, many thanks! You may have already noticed that much of this may have similar or the same problems. Anyway, I'm considering what to do about it all (and particularly whether a CCI is needed); by convention we'd want to see five solid examples of unacceptable copying to make a request. Do we have those, do you think? Well, OK, I can see from your recent contribs that we do; which are the most egregious, in your opinion? By the way, if you come across a really bad page you're always free to just blank it and list it at WP:CP. That has several advantages: it saves time for you; it makes sure that the page will be thoroughly checked for any residual copyvio, or deleted if the copyvio is too pervasive; and it allows you to alert other editors who work in this area that there may be a long-term problem. I'm going to get some sleep now, will check here in the a.m. Thanks again, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:59, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Justlettersandnumbers, thanks for the message! I was initially hoping to go through their ~1000 contributions and remove the copyvios that I could find, but it was getting trickier the further back I went. There definitely are issues dating back to 2010 and possibly earlier based on their talk page so I'd definitely appreciate your thoughts on whether a CCI is warranted. From what I could tell, just about every significant addition of text from them has included copyright violations, specifically copying sentences from the sources that they cite (this helps with detection, but the inline citation doesn't always correspond to the one being copied from). This 21kB addition to Chris Martin (artist) was particularly bad, and Lever (1966) and Jason Stopa needed to be reduced to stubs to get it all. I think the fact that basically every diff that I checked was a hit for copyvio indicates that there is much more to be cleaned up. Thanks for the WP:CP tip — I'll definitely look towards using it in the future. DanCherek (talk) 02:58, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Barbad

Hey DanCherek, many thanks for assisting with the book requests I had the other day. I'm afraid I gave you the wrong page numbers for the citation below:

  • Kia, Mehrdad (2016). The Persian Empire: A Historical Encyclopedia. Empires of the World. Vol. 1. Santa Barbara: ABC-CLIO. ISBN 978-1-61069-391-2.

I'm not sure what the correct ones are, but its the three pages that contain the entry on the Barbad (entries are in alphabetical order). Would it be possible for you to send these pages instead? No worries if not, best - Aza24 (talk) 23:54, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

@Aza24: Whoops! You actually specified the correct pages, but I pulled them from Volume 1, not Volume 2. Now Yes Sent via email. DanCherek (talk) 00:17, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
Ah, well a volume-numbering error on my part then! Thanks again, these pages should be really helpful when aiming for GA with Barbad - Aza24 (talk) 00:19, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
Always happy to help, and glad it got sorted out Good luck with the GAN! DanCherek (talk) 00:21, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

Tagging pages for speedy deletion

Hello, Dan,

Please do not tag pages for speedy deletion for being the creations of a blocked sockpuppet unless the editor is a confirmed sockpuppet and is blocked for that reason. This identification should not be based on suspicions or for merely being reported at SPI but confirmation by a checkuser. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 05:54, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

Could you point me to where G5 requires checkuser confirmation? The user has already been blocked specifically for sockpuppetry. DanCherek (talk) 06:02, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

Il Piccolo Marat Edit

Hey Dan - sorry about the Il Piccolo Marat edits. I was surprised that there was no synopsis for the opera and the NYTimes review appears to be the lone online source for one (even in Italian, which is very surprising). As it's highly unlikely NYTImes will permit the kind of licensing iikiPedia requires, I may draft my own synopsis from the score itself which will take a bit of time. There is likely no English libretto (the only vocal score I have is Italian only). But I'll make that a project. The work deserves more than the currently sparse entry. Thanks for your summary of Copyright requirements - I was just not thinking about it. Will do better in the future.

I see now this big box with "It has been requested that certain historical revisions of this page ..." Do you want me to restore the previous version fo the page? Or, because of my goof, is there some more complicated effort that must be made (the reference to "redact" perhaps)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gstalnaker (talkcontribs) 21:22, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Gstalnaker! Thanks for your work on this article, your efforts to expand it are much appreciated. Yes, you can either write your own synopsis from scratch or summarize the NYTimes one in your own words — the latter might be an easier task in the short term. The big box was just to indicate that a particular revision (with the copyright violation) had to be hidden from the page history, since this is something only a Wikipedia administrator can do. The revision deletion is complete and the box is now gone, so everything is good to go. Let me know if you have any other questions! DanCherek (talk) 22:53, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

Chetansing rajput moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Chetansing rajput, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. DMySon (talk) 08:39, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

Question from Awesome Peacock (16:58, 19 August 2021)

How do you create a article --Awesome Peacock (talk) 16:59, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Awesome Peacock! Please see Help:Your first article for a detailed guide on creating your first article. The first thing I do when I want to create a new article is to determine whether the article topic is notable. Important things to keep in mind are that the article's topic should be notable. This generally means that it has already been covered in detail in good references from independent sources. Make sure to summarize information in your own words, rather than copying content from other websites. Writing an article from scratch can be tough for new editors, so if you are finding it challenging, I would encourage you to edit existing articles for a while to get the hang of things. Let me know if you have additional questions or need more detailed guidance DanCherek (talk) 21:45, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

Gilmour Academy

HI There, I work for Gilmour Academy and am trying to update our wiki page but keep getting final warnings about copyright. I am the owner of the information and it can be shared in other places. How can I get around this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marisaleemartin (talkcontribs) 19:58, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

@Marisaleemartin: I see you have been trying to copy text from Gilmour Academy's welcome page into that article. Even if it was licensed compatibly, phrases like Gilmour emphasizes development of the whole person with a focus on a rigorous academic program complemented by a moral imperative to foster the development of faith are extremely promotional and not appropriate for Wikipedia, where articles are written from a neutral point of view and supported by reliable, independent sources.

Help for Reviewing

Hello, DanCherek! I aspire to be a professional editor here on Wikipedia. My aim is to publish an article before my birthday but because it's more difficult than I thought, I contributed so much to a draft [[6]] which I hope will be reviewed soon. It would be a great pleasure to have it reviewed by you, please.

Thanks!!! Ugochukwu75 — Preceding undated comment added 21:21, 25 August 2021‎ (UTC)

Hi there, Ugochukwu75, and happy early birthday. Unfortunately, I don't believe the current draft demonstrates the subject's notability. Generally if someone is notable enough for Wikipedia, there will be multiple reliable, independent sources with significant coverage of them. I looked at all of the sources in that draft and they appear to be either interviews, promotional articles, or articles that don't really discuss Rowshan in detail. In my opinion, the draft doesn't show that the notability threshold is met for these reasons. Sorry, and I hope that makes sense — please let me know if you have any questions. DanCherek (talk) 22:41, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

Much obliged, DanCherek. Can you run a background check on Rowshan, please? Just to know if I'm the one that cited wrong articles or if he's just not too notable. Thank you so much. Ugochukwu75 (talk) 23:01, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

@Ugochukwu75: Based on my own search for sources, I don't believe he is notable by Wikipedia's standards. That's related to the fact that Alliance Football Club does not seem to be a particularly notable group in its own right, and so it's not too surprising that there are not that many high-quality sources about the group's coach. I don't think an article about Rowshan would survive an AfD discussion. If you would be interested in expanding an existing football-related article, I'd suggest looking at Category:Association football biography stubs, which contains a ton of super short stubs that are more likely (but not guaranteed) to be notable — these would be good candidates for expansion!
