In an ideal world ... no, bear with your editor for just a minute ... there would be a format for scientific publishing online that was as much a standard as SI units are for the content. Likewise cataloguing publications would not be onerous, because part of the process would be to generate uniform metadata. Without claiming it could be the mythical free lunch, it might be reasonably be argued that sandwiches can be packaged much alike and have barcodes, whatever the fillings. The best on offer, to stretch the metaphor, is the meal kit option, in the form of XML. Where scientific papers are delivered as XML downloads, you get all the ingredients ready to cook. But have to prepare the actual meal of slow food yourself. See Scholarly HTML for a recent pass at heading off XML with HTML, in other words in the native language of the Web. The argument from real life is a traditional mixture of frictional forces, vested interests, and the classic irony of the principle of unripe time. On the other hand, discoverability actually diminishes with the prolific progress of science publishing. No, it really doesn't scale. Wikimedia as movement can do something in such cases. We know from open access, we grok the Web, we have our own horse in the HTML race, we have Wikidata and WikiJournal, and we have the chops to act.

Recent changes
- Ordinary pages can no longer be loaded as javascript. You could do this using
?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript
in the URL. Only fully protected pages in the MediaWiki: namespace or user javascript subpages can be loaded as javascript now. This is for better security. [1][2]
Problems
- New and updated translations from translatewiki.net will not reach the wikis for a while. You can still translate messages on translatewiki.net. The Wikimedia wikis will be updated with the new translations later. This is because of work on the translation system. [3][4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 October. It will be on all wikis from 4 October (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 3 October at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the meeting with the Wikimedia Foundation Search Platform team. The meeting will be on 3 October at 15:00 UTC. See how to join if you want to know how the search function works or have questions.
Future changes
- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour. You can read more about this.

Problems
- Some pages, edits and users disappeared for a short while after the server switch. Missing content and users was fixed within a day. Some preferences and other things might take a few more days to fix. [7]
- Wikis are updated with new and updated translations from translatewiki.net again. This will happen once a week. The developers are working on fixing the problem so we can have translation updates more often again. [8]
Changes later this week
- When you create an abuse filter that prevents edits you can now write a specific error message for it. Before this all abuse filters that prevented edits had the same error message. [9]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 October. It will be on all wikis from 18 October (calendar).
Meetings
- There will be no more meetings with the Editing team. This is because not enough Wikimedians were interested. To tell developers which bugs you think are the most important you can use Phabricator as normal. [10]
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 17 October at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Hello Seraphim System, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!
- Backlog
As of 21 October 2018[update], there are 3650 unreviewed articles and the backlog now stretches back 51 days.
- Community Wishlist Proposal
- There is currently an ongoing discussion regarding the drafting of a Community Wishlist Proposal for the purpose of requesting bug fixes and missing/useful features to be added to the New Page Feed and Curation Toolbar.
- Please join the conversation as we only have until 29 October to draft this proposal!
- Project updates
- ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
- There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.
- New scripts
- User:Enterprisey/cv-revdel.js(info) — A new script created for quickly placing {{copyvio-revdel}} on a page.

Armenian Genocide...
Is there a reason you like to use the lowercase G when referring to the Armenian Genocide on Wikipedia (as you did here)? The Armenian Genocide article has the letter g capitalized so it should be the same throughout Wikipedia. Étienne Dolet (talk) 07:38, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
- We should consider moving the article, it's not consistent with Wikipedia's capitalization style. Seraphim System (talk) 07:50, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
- Um, that'll be like making up your own rules. If you feel the title of the article doesn't meet with Wikipedia's capitalization style, that should be something to handle at the article itself. But changing it as you personally see fit throughout Wikipedia is out of line with consensus. And by the way, it was decided a long time ago to keep the Genocide capitalized per WP:COMMONNAME. Neuturality, references and spellings
Hello, You have a reply in my talk page. Thank you. --Aciram (talk) 15:56, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Aciram: I replied there. I can help add some of this content to the article, but we should probably move the discussion to the article talk page. Seraphim System (talk) 16:06, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you, I have replied. I have explained, I have asked you for a reply on the accusation of lack of neautrality as it is somewhat hurtful, and I have also a request for a potential block of me as editor. My request is honest, and I do hope that request can be reviewed soon, or at least performed as soon as I repeat something which may be regarded as non-neautral or a breach of spelling. Thank you.--Aciram (talk) 16:16, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- I have repeated my request for a block of myself on my talk page. Can you perform this block? Thank you--Aciram (talk) 16:48, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Aciram: I can't block you and even if I could block you I don't think you've done anything that deserves a block as of yet. I believe that your non-working spellcheck would cause this type of problem. I have no reason to think you are editing in bad faith. I'm not accusing you of anything either, if there is something critical that needs to added to the article, we can add it, but most likely a condensed version that covers the essential points without giving them WP:UNDUE weight. I'm also concerned about some of the removals because while your edit summary said you were "tightening the test, phrasing it more neutral", you later told me you consider your English
extremely bad
and the edit in question removed content about Tanzimat era reforms that improved the status of women - these did not seem like neutral removals. We can continue to discuss this at the article talk page, if you want.Seraphim System (talk) 16:49, 24 November 2018 (UTC) - I cannot recall bias removal of such content. I am deeply hurt by your accusation of bias. I do not understand it, and you refusal to describe it makes it impossible to meet and explain. They have also caused my to realize, that I am not in any way suitable for editing in wikpedia because of my mental state, as I suffer from panic attacks and anxiety and your accusation have in fact triggered one. Because of this, my mental state clearly make me unsuitable as an editor even if I have done nothing else wrong. I do beleive I should be blocked for the reason of my own mental health. You should report me to wikipedia, with the purpose of having mee blocked for violating neutrality. I may never understand why, I may regard it unfair, but perhaps you are correct and I simply do not possess a sense to understand it because of my mental state, which would mean, that a block would be beneficial for my health as well as for wikipedia. I would therefore support your report of a block of me; I would not contest it, and would not violate it when it has been perform. If would rather be beneficial for me to stay away, as I can clearly not contribute, for which I am deeply ashamed, and rightly should be. I appoologize, and I am not ironic. Thank you for making me aware of my fault. --Aciram (talk) 16:58, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Brother I updated that becuz thats my Family memeber , I updated the correct information, May I know the reason of you reverting that back . Jayzeekay (talk) 04:39, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
- I don't think I reverted, are you sure you haven't confused me with Shellwood? Seraphim System (talk) 04:49, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
reliable sources noticeboard
Hi, I noticed you reverted my changes made to the reliable sources noticeboard, re the book Fear. May I ask why? Thanks.Chapmansh (talk) 23:49, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Chapmansh: Hmm, it was an accident. This is the second time this has happened with rollback, I'm going to look into running a script to remove that button from my watchlist. I only use it with huggle anyway ... I'm really sorry about that, please restore whatever was reverted. Seraphim System (talk) 00:25, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

- @Redman19: Thank you, I don't think the brief discussion on that page is sufficient to revert claiming a past consensus. I would suggest starting an RfC about this, or at least a discussion on the talk page.
Edits to Ron Dermer
Hey there. You just added a paragraph to the page about Ron Dermer regarding his acceptance of an award from the CSP. Please note, that incident was already included (more concisely) in the paragraph before.
Additionally, I think the original is the better version, it doesn't have any unnecessary details. Hydromania (talk) 20:03, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
- Didn't see it, will take a look. Seraphim System (talk) 20:17, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Hydromania: Thanks, I didn't see it because it was tacked on to a paragraph discussing events in 2015. I developed a habit of scanning topic sentences that goes back to days of lengthy reading assignments in school and it's sort of automatic now. I've split them up so the paragraphs are organized chronologically and removed some of the extra details. Seraphim System (talk) 20:25, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
- Great! another thing, the term "branding" isn't in quotation marks in the Haaretz article. Were those his words? would you mind if I change the line to "Dermer criticized the SPLC for calling Gaffney, Daniel Pipes, Maajid Nawaz and others critical of Militant Islam "anti-Muslim extremists"" - As noted in the article, much of his speech was centered on the theme of "defeating militant Islam" Hydromania (talk) 00:28, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Hydromania: I put branding in quotes without putting much thought into it because I borrowed the language from the article, so no objection to changing that, but I don't think we need to specify "Militant Islam". The article actually says
branding Gaffney and other activists critical of Islam as extremists
without qualification. We also don't need scare quotes around anti-Muslim extremists, it's not creative language. The one thing I do see is that we should probably change it to "anti-Islam extremists" since that is more precise per the source (but without the quotes, since it's not a direct quote). Seraphim System (talk) 00:40, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
- As per here the correct quote actually is anti-muslim . can we add Aayan Hirsi Ali to those mentioned? (really hope I'm not annoying you :) "Measure twice cut once") Hydromania (talk) 00:53, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, ok, we can change that back. I'll add Aayan Hirsi Ali also. I also added something about militant Islam but I don't think we can merge it with his comments on SPLC because the source doesn't connect that part of the speech to the SPLC's comments about Gaffney (who remains on the SPLC's list of anti-Muslim extremists and we have to give the SPLC some weight here). Seraphim System (talk) 00:58, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
- Perfect! Hydromania (talk) 01:20, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Around 2.7 million Wikidata items have an illustrative image. These files, you might say, are Wikimedia's stock images, and if the number is large, it is still only 5% or so of items that have one. All such images are taken from Wikimedia Commons, which has 50 million media files. One key issue is how to expand the stock. Indeed, there is a tool. WD-FIST exploits the fact that each Wikipedia is differently illustrated, mostly with images from Commons but also with fair use images. An item that has sitelinks but no illustrative image can be tested to see if the linked wikis have a suitable one. This works well for a volunteer who wants to add images at a reasonable scale, and a small amount of SPARQL knowledge goes a long way in producing checklists. It should be noted, though, that there are currently 53 Wikidata properties that link to Commons, of which P18 for the basic image is just one. WD-FIST prompts the user to add signatures, plaques, pictures of graves and so on. There are a couple of hundred monograms, mostly of historical figures, and this query allows you to view all of them. commons:Category:Monograms and its subcategories provide rich scope for adding more. And so it is generally. The list of properties linking to Commons does contain a few that concern video and audio files, and rather more for maps. But it contains gems such as P3451 for "nighttime view". Over 1000 of those on Wikidata, but as for so much else, there could be yet more. Go on. Today is Wikidata's birthday. An illustrative image is always an acceptable gift, so why not add one? You can follow these easy steps: (i) log in at https://tools.wmflabs.org/widar/, (ii) paste the Petscan ID 6263583 into https://tools.wmflabs.org/fist/wdfist/ and click run, and (iii) just add cake.

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- You can post proposals for the Community Wishlist Survey. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on. You can post proposals until 11 November. You can vote on proposals from 16 November to 30 November.
- The wikis now have a content security policy report. This means that you might get a warning in your javascript console when you load external resources in your user scripts. For security reasons it is recommended that you don't do this. It might not be possible to load external resources in your scripts in the future. [11]
Problems
- Your watchlist can show which changes you have already seen. This did not work for a few days. It has been fixed. [12]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 31 October. It will be on all wikis from 1 November (calendar).
- The 2006 wikitext editor is no longer available. It will be removed from Special:Preferences. It has not been the standard editor for a long time. It was replaced by the 2010 wikitext editor. [13][14]
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 31 October at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Recent changes
- Some old mobile browsers can use the watchlist again. This has not worked for a while. These browsers are called grade C browsers. This helps for example Windows Phone 8.1 with Internet Explorer and Lumia 535 with Windows 10. [15]
Problems
- You can choose to see edit conflicts in a two-column view. This is a beta feature. You can find it in your preferences. Users who use this view saw the edit conflict resolution page when they wanted to see a preview. This has been fixed. [16][17][18]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 November. It will be on all wikis from 15 November (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 14 November at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You can use the content translation tool to translate articles. The developers are working on a new version. One of the changes will be a maintenance category. Articles where users add a lot of text from machine translation without changing it will be in that category. This is so the community can review it. The users will also have been warned before they publish the article that it has a lot of unchanged text from machine translations. [19]

- There is an A/B test for
sameAs
data. This is to make it easier to find the right information with a search engine. This changes the metadata for a wiki page. It doesn't change how the page looks. [20]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 21 November at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Wikimedia wikis use templates to show readers there are problems with the content on some pages. For example if there are no sources or the page needs to be rewritten. The mobile website will soon show more information when you use these templates. Some templates may need to be updated. [21]
- The Education Program extension was removed from all Wikimedia projects. The database tables used by the extension will be archived. This will happen in a month. If you want the information on your wiki you should move it to a normal wiki page. [22]

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- On wikis with translatable pages you could create a mess when you moved a page that had translatable subpages. A subpage is when you use
/
to create a new page:/wiki/Page/Subpage
. The subpages would be moved but not the translations. The subpages are no longer automatically be moved. This is to make it safer to move pages. [23]
Changes later this week
- The advanced search interface will be available by default on all Wikimedia wikis. It makes it easier to use some of the special search functions that most editors don't know exist. It's already active on German, Farsi, Arabic and Hungarian Wikipedia. [24]
- Special:UnusedCategories show empty categories with no files or other categories. You can soon choose to not show soft redirect categories or some maintenance categories there. You can do this with the magic word
__EXPECTUNUSEDCATEGORY__
. [25] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 November. It will be on all wikis from 29 November (calendar).
