Question from ArleneGe (03:28, 15 August 2024)

[edit]

hola necesito publicar un articulo ORCID. pero no se como hacerlo podrás ayudarme? --ArleneGe (talk) 03:28, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ArleneGe - Hi there! What exactly is an ORCID article? Can you elaborate a bit more so I can help you? :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:16, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
https://orcid.org/ Polygnotus (talk) 09:46, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Polygnotus - Ah, thank you. I was trying to search here for the information thinking that it was something MediaWiki, Wikipedia, or WMF-related. ArleneGe - Do you have the URL to the webpage you'd like to cite? I can certainly help you from there once I have it. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:29, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My Spanish is not great, and they are not very clear, but I think they would like to publish an article on ORCID, and may mistakenly believe that we are (related to) ORCID. Since ORCID is just a database of people and works they can't publish on ORCID; they need to publish elsewhere and then follow these instructions to add their work to ORCID. But I am just guessing. Hello how make a citation --Caumeran.angelo miguel (talk) 05:31, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Caumeran.angelo miguel! Welcome to Wikipedia! Check out this page; it will show you exactly how to do that. If you have questions about this page, please don't be a stranger; I'll be happy to answer them and help you. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:29, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Oshwah. Please check your email; you've got mail!
It may take a few minutes from the time the email is sent for it to show up in your inbox. You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{You've got mail}} or {{ygm}} template.
Lectonar (talk) 11:54, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lectonar - Ring ring! Did I respond to your email? I want to make sure that I did, and I apologize if I haven't. I've been trying to figure out life (where to move, if I can work remotely, blah blah blah...), but I think I do owe you a response. If so, you will receive one. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:14, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lectonar - I'll be checking my email and responding shortly. I apologize for the delay. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:48, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lectonar - I just cleared out my inbox, but I didn't see an email from you - though an on-wiki notification shows that you definitely did email me like you said, and a search through my mailbox pulled up nothing. Did I respond to your email? If not, can you resend it to me? let me know; I want to make sure that emails from other users arrive and go into my inbox like they should be. Thanks - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:42, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Top of the morning to you....no worries, I did send an e-mail, but the problem is long solved. It had to do with the sockpuppets plopping up left and right on History of the chair, and is long solved (as much as it can be solved). I can go on a search for the "lost email", but would do so only if you insist. Cheers. Lectonar (talk) 07:06, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lectonar - If it's resolved, then nah... no need. If you see any more instances like this, please don't be a stranger; you're welcome to email me and let me know, and I'll be happy to help. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:39, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question Thanks so much from AradhanaChatterjee (15:38, 23 August 2024)

[edit]

Thank you for letting my very non-wikipedia style (sleep deprivation induced) rant/vent post stay on the wonderful Oshwah's talk page for this long. It did ward off the definitely not good faith editor from my talk page.

I made the post here after an editor with an older account assumed that because my account was new, they could just throw a bunch of (very incorrect) jargon at me (with a bunch of unrelated shortcut wikilinks) and assert some faux authority, I suppose? Then when I pointed out to them that only this account is new, I've been on this website all my life and their post was redundant, they made some ai text generation accusation (with no links or diffs this time) and warned me about "being cautious" and avoiding Wikipedia policy violations. 🤥🤯😖

I figured might just leave this post here that'd show up in my contribs so they know new user accounts have nice, kind and experienced editors helping them out and who definitely would see through that editor's nonsensical disruptive edits.

Anyway now I'm back to my peaceful copy-editing and adding citations wherever I can editor mode - so I'd be remiss not to edit this post too :) AradhanaChatterjee (talk) 22:14, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AradhanaChatterjee - Hi there! I'm happy to hear that the issue is resolved. I always want disputes to end peacefully, but (as you very likely already know) that doesn't happen sometimes. If someone is being a bad faith user, they're usually users who end up being blocked for vandalism or other problems. My recommendation is to take the meat and leave the bones; what I'm saying is that there will often be someone who will try their best to help you, but the way and manner in which they relay this to you might be translated differently or "give a bad vibe". It takes skill and it takes experience to be able to convey your feelings, attitude, message, really your... "voice" ... through text. That's why I say, "take the meat and leave the bones" in these situations. People might not have a great attitude or they'll come out as outright mean - but they'll have a helpful message behind their thoughts. If you have any questions or if I can help you with anything, please let me know and I'll be happy to lend you a hand. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:28, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Replying here bacause I kinda forgot about this interaction and failed to follow up after that. Additionally, the talk pages were not added to my watchlist and hence, I wasn't able to follow up. Glad to hear the issue has been settled somehow, but since I am the involved user here, I would like to clarify my points regarding what happened.
  • The user named AradhanaChatterjee !voted support on the move discussion at Talk:2024 Kolkata rape and murder (permalink) without providing any rationale, but with an edit summary Too many feelings to write out a more technically correct response - which is kinda what i do if u check my contribs. But the impact of proper nouns in India is something i'll never truly accept. i'm still here tho. so take my silent solidarity as a message before i lash out at the status quo enablers. in dec 2012, this is where i came to find out more information about the case because i'm not fear motivated and my parents for the first time imposed gender roles on me was confusing. I reverted it AGF within 3 minutes with an edit summary of Not exactly the place to show solidarity and support. The discussion is about the change of the title. The revert was because of the summary and blank support with no rationale (WP:VOTESTACKING) on the discussion.
  • Following that, I placed the level 1 warning template in the user talk, explaining the inappropriate usage of talk page for such edits. Since the account was new and few edits were there, I assumed it's a new account (also from the edit patterns).
  • About an hour later, the user added a rationale and !voted support on the move proposal.
  • Thereafter, this discussion took place. Some of the edits were giving a little LLM vibe and hence I pointed that put too and mentioned See WP:LLM for more. If not, ignore. Thanks.
  • One final point I'd like to make is about the I've literally had to put my original text to the scary LLM and humanise it. Sad. Kind of like most Indian men even comment from them, which I'm still unable to figure out quite as much. I'm not sure if it was a general comment about all Indian men or a personal attack on me. Nonetheless, I just let them be because last I checked, they went admin shopping and ranting on various talk pages, and giving long edit summaries about me gatekeeping.
It was never my intention to intimidate or be condescending to them and I apologise if I came out like that. If only they have asked me more for the diffs and permalinks, I'd have happily given them so. They are prolific and highly enthusiastic editor and I hope my behavior haven't caused them any pain or given a reason to quit Wikipedia.
Except on the case of very obvious vandals, I always assume good faith when any editor makes a mistake and try to help them out. I'm sure scores of users who have interacted with me can vouch for that. I have been doing the same for over a decade and never had such a interaction. Anyways, it's on the past and I just wanted to make my side of the story set right before proceeding. Thanks Oshwah. Happy editing yall :) The Herald (Benison) (talk) 15:46, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Herald - Thanks for responding and for adding your input. It sounds like this issue can be put to rest, so I'll leave things be and let you both work things out. However, if I'm needed again, please don't be a stranger. I'm happy to help with anything you need; just leave me a message here. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:46, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Old edit apology

[edit]

You probably don't remember this, but I tried to edit a page back in 2019 without adding a source, and when you removed it (obviously) I tried to argue back (here is the link to that discussion: User:Oshwah/TalkPageArchives/2019-02#Ohi Day). I wanted to thank you for removing my edit and apologize for arguing back. Have a good day. CristinaK1756 (talk) 19:48, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi CristinaK1756! I really appreciate your message. No apologies are necessary at all, and I have no qualms, ill-will, or anything at all against you. We were all new here at some point in time. Just because you made a mistake or didn't do something correctly here doesn't make you a bad editor. We learn from failure; I have made WAYYYY more than my fair share of mistakes, including ridiculous stupid ones that had big effects on the site and other contributors. If you're not making your mistakes, you're not learning and growing. Never take a failure as a failure; take them all as learning opportunities. You will succeed; failure is not a "left-or-right split in the road" where you have to pick which way is the right way to go. It's nearly always one direct path - fail, fail, maybe fail again, and then success. :-) Thanks again for the message. It feels good to know that what we're doing is actually making a good difference for others, and that is something I strive for and do so seriously. :-D Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:39, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jermaineqweli (20:08, 4 September 2024)

[edit]

Hello, pls how can I create a page that talks about me as an artiste? Like my own wiki page that talks about my story as an artiste --Jermaineqweli (talk) 20:08, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jermaineqweli - Writing an article about yourself, or writing an autobiography on Wikipedia, is a highly discouraged activity. In nearly all cases, users who do this end up finding out that they wasted all their time doing this. If you don't meet the notability guidelines, any article you create about yourself will be deleted. I recommend that you spend your time creating or improving existing articles that interest you. If you are indeed notable, someone will undoubtedly write an article about you. Please let me know if you have any more questions. I'll be happy to answer them and help you. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:52, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion tag

[edit]

Hello, I see that you deleted the biography of the new artist article I was working on. I just wanted to let you know that I worked really hard on that trying to find new artist who don't have biographies. I am not misusing Wikipedia as a web host but instead using it so other people can find information about their favorite people. I have been using Wikipedia for 3 years and with my experience I think its better to have a conversation with someone before deleting their hard work. I will be creating a new article and as trust I am not using my favorite website a host for myself or others. Tati02lovee (talk) 15:53, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from ShenikaSChapman (21:15, 10 September 2024)

[edit]

Is editing very useful and accurate on the first try? --ShenikaSChapman (talk) 21:15, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ShenikaSChapman (talk page watcher) That depends on how accurate your edit is and how useful. This seems to me to be a question that you knew the answer to already.
As an example, this question of yours was accurate, but, because you knew the answer already and because that answer was in your control, it was not useful to the recipient, and the answer was not useful to you. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 21:30, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can I add a fact to a subject? --Break78745 (talk) 23:05, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Break78745! Welcome to Wikipedia. You can of course add facts to any article. Just make sure your additions are neutrally-worded, verifiable, and include a citation to a reliable source if the information is not common knowledge. I encourage you to see Wikipedia's getting started page as well as complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial to get the basic, but very important, concepts down before you venture into editing. Those two pages will save you a lot of time and frustration if you take advantage of both. Please let me know if you run into any questions and I'll be more than happy to help you. :-) Cheers, and have fun! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:37, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Cassiopeia -  Done; I'm extending the range block now... Oh yeah, please do. My email is always open to you. Cyber security requires a significant amount of knowledge and a somewhat-heavy pocket full of certifications if you want to be dropped with a nice job offer and take home very very decent pay. There's a lot more to it than what TV shows and movies have most people to believe (as you very much already know). Certificates, encryption, standardizations and best practices, breach, containment, and disaster protocol - I could go on forever. But hey, if you enjoy it, you'll find the good parts of the job fun (but you'll still have a lot of mundane tasks that you have to perform because certifications). Keep me posted! I'd love to see how you advance in this area! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:37, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Eaglelizard (08:47, 12 September 2024)

[edit]

Hello, I am wanting to make my first contribution to a wikipedia article referenced in a blog post circulating on hackernews, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amygdala_hijack

I cannot add a new topic to the "talk" page to suggest adding a warning banner or disclaimer about the information being not based in actual research.

1. Is there something I am missing? 2. What is the best way to go about making an edit like this?

Thanks! --Eaglelizard (talk) 08:47, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eaglelizard! Welcome to Wikipedia. I just checked the protection level of Talk:Amygdala hijack and verified that the page is not protected or restricted in any way that would prevent you from editing. Are you not seeing the "New Section" tab at the top of the page? That is where you go in order to add a new topic. You might also find Wikipedia's new user tutorial useful if you're having issues. Please let me know if I can provide any further assistance. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:48, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Actions on Wikipedia wrongly attributed to me.

[edit]

Hi. I notice in my notifications (bell icon) several references to me that are misattributed. I also received a warning about alleged vandalism I committed in the "Susan Sarandon" page. None of this relates to me. I don't know if using a VPN leads to IP address sharing, which may have caused this mix-up, so I'd like to ask if you would suggest I stop using a VPN and could recommend how I can clear my name. Thanks! Cuatito (talk) 03:17, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Correction: The only action wrongly attributed to me seems to be the claim of vandalism. Cuatito (talk) 03:52, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Cuatito! Welcome to Wikipedia! It sounds like your IP address is shared between multiple people. This is why you're getting these warnings. However, fear not! By creating your account, Cuatito, you've already resolved the issue. Have you continued to see warnings on your account's talk page? It doesn't appear so... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:19, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi can i make a page of a girl famous --Kompf560 (talk) 21:46, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Someone using my IP to edit?

[edit]

Hello @Oshwah

Hope this message finds you well. Apparently someone has been vandalizing Wikipedia articles using my IP address? I genuinely do not know what is going on but I am logged on my user account and messaging to let you know about the issue. The address is 2600:1700:1D6C:2800:55D8:2699:D2E1:40E4.

Best, Kevin9217 (talk) 00:36, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kevin9217! I saw the message you left that pinged me. What internet connection are you using? The best way to avoid warnings that don't belong to you is to do what you've already done - create and use an account. Most IP blocks will still allow users to log into their accounts and edit Wikipedia without fear of the IP block affecting them. Even if a block is set so they also apply to accounts that are using the IP address, the block just restricts you - it doesn't create any record in your account's block log. I'd say to you to just make sure that you log in before you edit. If the vandalism isn't your doing, you'll have nothing to worry about. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:36, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for that reassurance! Cuatito (talk) 01:27, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jokeryoung (06:34, 19 September 2024)

[edit]

Hi mentor. I would like to write an article about myself. How do I do it? --Jokeryoung (talk) 06:34, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jokeryoung! I'll give you the straight-up answer: Don't do it. You're going to end up wasting hours, if not days, worth of time creating an article about yourself - just to find that article deleted. If you're notable, someone else will undoubtedly write an article about you here. Instead, I recommend that you focus on article topics and subjects that interest you. If you have any questions, let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:39, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Banxxy (08:31, 20 September 2024)

[edit]

Hello. I have contributed to Wikipedia anonymously in the past on the subject of food and wine, but recently decided to register as a user and add the titles of two relevant films to a list of movies in the article "BDSM in culture and media." The first title took without problem, but the second resulted in the following error message/warning:

abusefilter-disallowed Your action has triggered an edit filter An automated filter has identified this edit as potentially unconstructive, so it has been disallowed. If this edit is constructive, please report this error. Disruptive behavior may result in being blocked from editing. Report error

The only reason I can surmise for this rejection might be due to the fact that, unlike the first, successful, addition, the second one did not have its own page in Wikipedia with which to validate its inclusion, therefor unable to verify it's categorical appropriateness.

The film in question is a 1967 Japanese social satire titled A Fool's Love/Love for an Idiot, based on the novel Naomi by renowned Japanese author Junichiru Tanizaki. Naomi bears a certain resemblance to Lolita, Of Human Bondage and My Fair Lady, about an older man, Joji, who decides to adopt a neglected teenage girl, Naomi, and to eventually mary her when she reaches the age of majority. Joji's plans to transform his diamond-in-the-rough into a sophisticated, westernized girl meet the cold ice water of reality as the supposedly exploited Naomi proves to have a vastly superior social IQ to her "benefactor" and by novel's end she has virtually taken over every aspect of their relationship.

The 1967 adaptation brilliantly transports the setting of mid 1930s Japan to the mid 1960s, with great comedic effect.

If you could possibly explain the Wikipedia error I committed here, as I would like to contribute a lot to Wikipedia. I take it that the entire selection/rejection process is a function of AI.

Thanks for whatever suggestions you may have. --Banxxy (talk) 08:31, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Banxxy! Have you created a discussion on this page? Depending on the context and the words you used in your edit, fixing this issue can become difficult. However, it's important to discuss. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:19, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why was I blocked from edits

[edit]

I was linked to some page about a weird prophet dude I’ve never heard of. There might be a bug in the code. I created a new account as a result, was just using the app for years. Never editing etc. Mj2024aok (talk) 18:01, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mj2024aok! Welcome to Wikipedia! Can you link me to the exact article or page that you're referring to? What were you doing when you were linked to the page? It's possible that you accidentally clicked on a wiki link within the page you were at originally, which would take you to that particular page. It happens; I do it all the time when I'm editing, adding content, or fixing vandalism... ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:12, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

September block

[edit]

You blocked my IP address for vandalism. I am in a perfect storm. I got a new modem and internet service; my new IV6 IP is 2600:1700:8151:2b90:3c0a:fc00:b98:47de. I never edited or even heard of the article you said I vandalized. Then my computer died - I kept all my passwords in it and, right now, they're not retrievable. I couldn't use the password help, because of the block. So I opened a new account. Can you help me? Am I doing the right thing? I can redirect my old account to the new one and would certainly note it on my talk page - i'm just afraid of the seeming over-large block. Boriesailor (talk) 18:59, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Boriesailor - Your account, as well as the Benetsee account that you mention on your user page - are not blocked. You might've just been caught by an autoblock or were trying to edit Wikipedia from an IP range that was hard blocked. No need to redirect anything or transfer anything over; just abandon the account you don't want to keep, and then resume using the original one that you want to use. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them and help you further. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:09, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Everything now works - no longer blocked; found my passwords and am doing a couple of edits. I will abandon the editor Boriesailor. Do I have to do anything? Or just let it go? Thanks for responding. Benetsee (talk) 16:39, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Benetsee - Hey, that's great news! I'm glad to hear that all is resolved on your end. Nope, you don't have to do anything special - just stop using the account and pretend it doesn't exist anymore. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:55, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Nerlygranada27 on Talk:JET Programme (11:20, 23 September 2024)

[edit]

Hello, What is in JET PROGRAMME? --Nerlygranada27 (talk) 11:20, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nerlygranada27! Welcome to Wikipedia! Did you happen to take a moment to read the article page instead of the talk page you linked me to? It explains (in a nutshell) that it's short for The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme. It's a teaching program sponsored by the Japanese government that brings university graduates to Japan as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs). ;-) Basically, it's made by the government of Japan that encourages, incentivizes, and helps pay graduates from foreign universities to come to Japan and provide instruction at a university in that person's native language. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:18, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from NilocSnave (19:29, 26 September 2024)

[edit]

Hello Oshwar, My project is only two pages in length with no visuals. My first question is can I easily cut and paste from Word? I should say that I have only briefly perused the advice pages, which I will do before I start. I look forward to hearing from you but there's no hurry, Colin --NilocSnave (talk) 19:29, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi NilocSnave! Welcome to Wikipedia! The only concern I have with your question here is in regards to Wikipedia's copyright policy and Wikipedia's policy that disallows close paraphrasing. Can you verify that what you're cutting and moving over from your Word document is written entirely by you and in your own words, and that there is absolutely no content that would cause a copyright violation concern if you were to add it? Even modifying content you've copied straight from an external site into your Word document, and then going through and modifying verbs, key phrases, sentences and content in order to no longer make it an exact copy - is a serious violation of copyright. That's close paraphrasing, and absolutely not allowed. Otherwise, if everything is original, written entirely by you, and if nothing was copied from the internet first, etc, then yes that's totally fine. I will frequently start an article, policy page, etc by writing it into a simple text file first. When I'm ready to publish it, I'll copy it straight over. I've accidentally exited out while adding a bunch of content to a new page, and the experience is infuriating. The other thing I'd advise is to not use Microsoft Word, but use a text file for this instead. Microsoft Word likes to add additional formatting, code, fonts, etc that you won't see until you copy the document over. Text documents don't do that. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:57, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Oshwar,
Thank you for your detailed response to my query. I can confirm that everything in my text has been written by myself. I was about replace the content that I had posted with longer and better version that was written in Word. Now I will make a text version. This will take me a little time. 2600:1700::/30

[edit]

In my opinion, this block is way too wide and affects an entire ISP (AT&T). I don't think this is a WP:T-MOBILE situation, but if you can provide me with any previous discussion about this range, that would be helpful. Have smaller blocks been tried before? I also don't like how you are not responding to questions from new/inexperienced users about the block. wizzito | say hello! 18:32, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded, a /30 of IPv6 address space is not the same as a /30 of IPv4 space. An IPv6 address is 128 bits, so a /30 would be 2^98 hosts. Probably a bit over-broad?
ShadyNorthAmericanIPs (talk) 22:59, 9 October 2024 (UTC) (one of those hosts)[reply]
Hi Wizzito, ShadyNorthAmericanIPs! Please accept my apologies for the delay responding to your inquiry about this range block applied. I recently went through... a major life event, and it caused me to have to take a temporary hiatus from editing here so that I could figure things out and get my personal life under control. I see that there have been an extensive number of blocks that've been applied to this range in the past. The range block has expired now, but if you look at the range's user talk page, an appeal was filed but denied by another administrator, as they agreed that it was necessary given the circumstances and level of disruption it was causing. I hate applying such wide range blocks like this, but disruptive editing will (occasionally, definitely not commonly) start appearing from IP addresses that are hopping to others and over its very large range like this. If the severity level and/or volume of vandalism is high enough, applying such a wide block sometimes becomes necessary. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them and discuss this further with you. Again, I apologize for the delay responding to your message here. It was absolutely not because I was avoiding and trying to ignore you. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:42, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MarySmithson! Welcome to Wikipedia! I understand that you're interested in creating a new article. Have you by chance gone through Wikipedia's getting started page? A tutorial that I also highly recommend you complete is Wikipedia's new user tutorial. It'll provide you with a bunch of very important walkthroughs and guides that will show you how to edit, how to communicate with other users, locate important policies and guidelines, as well as other important guides. After you've done those things, I recommend you navigate to Wikipedia's my first article page. It will help you to verify that the topic or article subject is notable, as well as help you perform other important checks before you decide whether or not to proceed. It also will help answer most common questions and discuss the most common issues and pitfalls that new editors will fall into when they attempt to create their first (as well as subsequent - for a little while) article. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them and assist you further. Good luck! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:25, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from AthenaBC (14:51, 16 October 2024)

[edit]

Hello Ixtal

Have a question on interting references. Having used the button under the text box to create the code to intert the URL, and entered it, and saved, can see in the references list below that the citation is only coming up with the URL, but not with the text that's needed before the URL. How do you edit the references list to insert the correct citation needed, so you don't just get a URL link? --AthenaBC (talk) 14:51, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AthenaBC! Welcome to Wikipedia! Is there a specific example that you can point me to so that I can show you exactly what to do? :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:28, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Mentor! How i create a wikipedia? --Elijahsese (talk) 05:43, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Hi, new user. When you are talking about a wikipedia, do you mean to create an article? New users who are not 4 days old and have less than 10 edits (non-autoconfirmed users) cannot create new articles in the mainspace, unfortunately. However, there is an article wizard that can allow you to create drafts. Drafts are new articles that can be created and developed for a limited time, and can receive feedback before being moved to the article namespace. I hope my response helps, and happy editing. Advice on Editing

[edit]

Hi Oshwah,

Nice to meet you. My primary motivation for registering with Wikipedia is to write a page about Leonard Currie who was Colonel of the 133rd New York Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War. The 133rd have a page and Currie is referenced.

I have done some background reading for new users and understand that I should start by editing articles before writing a new page. As I have a significant amount of information with references about the 133rd do you think that it would be appropriate for me to start my editing by adding more detail to the page on the 133rd New York Infantry Regiment?

Kind regards - R3NBM

R3NBM (talk) 12:36, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Although I'm not Oshwah, you could use the article wizard to create a draft version of the page. Once you're done with it, you could then submit it for review and then others will give feedback on it.
If you want to experiment though, you can create a sandbox to do editing tests (such as seeing how different infoboxes look and such).
Wikipedia:A primer for newcomers is also a good resource to use for become familiar with Wikipedia.
Best of luck! R0paire-wiki (talk) 16:08, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you
R3NBM (talk) 16:20, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi R3NBM! Welcome to Wikipedia! R0paire-wiki pretty much gave the same response that I would've given; you'll want to use the Article Wizard when creating new articles for awhile (at least until you become familiar and proficient with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines that are relevant to new article creations - such as the notability requirements for article subjects). Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:16, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Heyo, how's it going? I don't know if you'll remember me and I know this is a minor one, but a few years ago we were engaged in a dispute over disclosing personal information on my user page due to my age, and as part of that you reset my page's public view edit history. While I understand and respect your actions, I just wanted to ask if I could have the edit history restored please as I've now come of age? GOLDIEM J (talk) 19:15, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GOLDIEM J! Welcome back! I do remember you; it's sure been awhile! I hope you're doing well and that life is treating you kindly. :-) I really do not recommend this (since we, as standard protocol, tell all users to keep any and all personal identifiable information off of Wikipedia), but sure - if this is what you really want, I can unhide those revisions if you wish. Since this action will make personal identifiable information public, can you do me a favor and respond to this message confirming that you wish for me to unhide those revisions on your user page? Since this modification will expose personal identifiable information, I want to verify for 100% certain that this is what you'd like me to do. If you have any reservations or hesitation with unhiding any of the information added to your user page, now is the time to let me know. I don't want your information exposed if you have any level of hesitation or uncertainty. In nearly all cases, once personal identifiable information has been added or made public, it's very difficult (if not impossible) to take back later. Even with the content gone and the revisions hidden, the community has a very long memory. Please take some time to think about this, and let me know what your decision is. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:35, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes please, I am comfortable with this information being publicly findable.
Just for your peace of mind, I don't intend to readd this information as extensively any time soon, but I thought I'd ask because I wanted to be able to look back on my page's edit history (for nostalgia's sake🤭)
And also, thank you for your help with infoboxes all those years ago, I've definitely got the hang of it now😅 GOLDIEM J (talk) 21:06, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
GOLDIEM J - I'm glad to hear that you've become familiar and proficient with infoboxes. Those are important to learn and understand if your goal is to become experienced with the creation (or expansion) of quality articles. The next step is to make sure that you understand Wikipedia's notability guidelines, since any future article subjects that you create a new article about will be required to meet them. :-)
Regarding your request:  Done. Please let me know if I can assist you with anything else. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:28, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Question from Joao Zero Fernandes (15:01, 25 October 2024)

[edit]

Olá... Gostaria de publicar uma página sobre o fotógrafo: joao zero --Joao Zero Fernandes (talk) 15:01, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Joao Zero Fernandes, welcome to Wikipedia! I always recommend that new users reference and use the new article wizard to assist you with the creation of new articles. It will help you to verify that certain important items are verified and checked before you can proceed (mainly in order to avoid creating an article about a subject that already exists, among other things). I also need to note that it appears that the article subject you wish to create an article about matches the name that you set to be the username of your account. If you are the actual photographer that you're attempting to create an article about, you should know that creating autiobiographies (or articles about yourself) is a highly discouraged behavior that will very likely be unsuccessful and result in the article's deletion. If this is the case, I highly recommend that you do not waste your time. In nearly all cases where users try to create an article about themselves, the article ends up being rejected (if created in the draft space), or deleted (if published directly as an article). I'd also recommend that you review Wikipedia's guidelines concerning conflicts of interest. Instead of doing this, I recommend that you contribute and spend your time and efforts toward expanding and improving existing articles. This way, you can gain important experience and hands-on learning and you can work toward becoming proficient at adding quality contributions and content that's referenced by reliable sources. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them and help you further. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:59, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Revision deletion

[edit]

Hello Oshwah. I understand you're able to handle RevDel requests? Would it be possible to RevDel this change? It includes defamatory content of a living person.

If this isn't the normal process on how to do this, please drop me a line and let me know for future reference. --My Pants Metal (talk) 17:01, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My Pants Metal -  Done. Next time, you'll want to email me these particular requests, as reporting and requesting RevDel or suppression on revisions here instead of via email makes these requests public and for anyone to see and read. In many instances, this will cause a Streisand effect to occur, as readers will see your request, and then quickly run to view the revision and content before it becomes hidden from them to be able to see. ;-) No worries, though. I happened to be on my user talk page as your message came in, so I was able to take care of it quickly. Just email me next time... :-D Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:06, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Oshwar, I've written my article but I can't find guidance on the other items needed for it to be complete and visible. Somewhere on Wikipedia I've seen direction on the overall structure needed for a complete contribution before it would be accessible.

hello I'm new I need to know the basic skills required in editing. What I'm trying to ask, as a beginner where and how do I start --Cindy Liruma (talk) 12:59, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Special:WantedTemplates

[edit]
Hi! I have been cleaning up WP:Database reports/Transclusions of non-existent templates and Special:WantedTemplates and I noticed that your javascript page is transcluding Template:Dategroup.date and a few other non-existent templates. Due to a "feature" in the backend software, even though this is a javascript page, the software parses braces and brackets the same to generate links. It would be very helpful if you could add
 // <nowiki>
to the top of your script page and
 // </nowiki>
to the bottom of your script page. Because these <nowiki>...</nowiki> are inside of javascript comments, it won't impact the functionality of your script, but it will keep the backend sofware from thinking you are transcluding templates. Thanks in advance for your help! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:31, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know if you need help, I can have someone make the edits for you. Here is an example of what the edit looks like: [1]. Thanks again. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:35, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Plastikspork -  Done (diff is here). Thanks for letting me know that I didn't add those tags... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:19, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from SouthDweller (23:13, 26 October 2024)

[edit]

Thanks Oshwah for offering to be my mentor. I'm a newbie and would like help -- I added a comment in the "Cryptids" talk page and inadvertently stirred up a lot of discussion. Now I get about 5 emails a day following the discussion and frankly, life is too short. How do I stop getting the emails? Can I unsubscribe from this "talk" page? --SouthDweller (talk) 23:14, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) You can change your notification preferences here. FifthFive (talk) 23:15, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
SouthDweller - FifthFive is correct. Email settings can be changed in your Preferences. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:23, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New Mentor

[edit]

Hi, I got a message saying you are my new mentor. It's a privilege to have such an experienced user. My main expertise on the The Troubles in Ireland as well as Great Britain] & Europe. Nice to meet you. Shanegallager (talk) 13:45, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shanegallager - It’s good to meet you too! Let me know if you need help with anything and I’ll be happy to lend a hand. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:18, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much I will do. I'm currently creating a Timeline of the The Troubles on mainland Europe (Germany, Netherlands & Belgium), as there are already ones for Timeline of the Troubles in Great Britain Britain and Timeline of the Troubles in the Republic of Ireland the Irish Republic. I think if I finish this all the Timelines relating to The Troubles should be complete.
Thank you again. Shanegallager (talk) 23:59, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Shanegallager - You bet! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:20, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Newmentor

Hi Yummyumbby! Welcome to Wikipedia! This page details the mentorship program on Wikipedia, how it works, and describes its purpose and goals. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:25, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Alina Fazal Karim Baigal (15:53, 29 October 2024)

[edit]

Hi I am Alina. I want to publish an article on wikipedia, can you guide? --Alina Fazal Karim Baigal (talk) 15:53, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alina Fazal Karim Baigal! I recommend reviewing Wikipedia's getting started page, as well as completing Wikipedia's new user tutorial before doing anything. Afterwards, when you're ready, you can navigate here to go through the wizard for new users regarding a new article creation. Please let me know if you need anything else. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:37, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Hellokitty2387 (17:04, 29 October 2024)

Hi Oshwah- Thank you for being my mentor. I was wondering how I can change a photo on a wikipage? Please let me know! thank you in advance --Hellokitty2387 (talk) 17:04, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hellokitty2387! Welcome to Wikipedia! Wikipedia has a manual of style guideline page dedicated entirely to images. You can click here to review it. The page should provide you with all of the information you're looking for. :-) Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any more questions. I'll be happy to help! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:39, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Disruptive overtagging

[edit]

Hi there! You recently wrote on a topic at ANI that you could help with a user who is engaging in disruptive overtagging from multiple IP addresses. It is still going on, from new IPs all the time, although the user is at least now using edit summaries so it's slightly easier to find. Most recently:

  • User:2001:448A:1020:5990:3824:C3C7:253E:8C13 has tagged me and other users in some edit summaries of the overtagging (like so and so).
  • User:36.69.22.237 is also adding the same tags, with the same summaries, see here and here for example. A curious thing that I can't get my head around is that this user (as with previous IP they have used) keeps targetting articles I have recently edited, see here and here. There are dozens of examples of this from the last few months. As I am specifically engaged in clearing the backlog of articles with too many maintenance tags, this is particularly infuriating.

Now and again the tags are appropriate for the article, but given that they are adding the same 4 tags each time ({cleanup rewrite}, {copyedit}, {more sources needed}, {unreliable sources}), it's rather a question of a stopped clock telling the right time twice a day. I have written on each of these IPs' talk pages (and the previous ones), but there has been no reply, apart from at ANI, which did not result in a change of behaviour. How can we proceed? Any help much appreciated! Jdcooper (talk) 01:21, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jdcooper! I apologize for not being able to review and respond to your message sooner. I've been busy as of late, and I'm just now catching up with all of the messages, emails, pings, requests, etc that I received here. It looks like these IP users have not edited since the end of October, so I'm going to hold off on applying any blocks or taking any action for now. If they resume their disruption, or if you see additional users doing the same, please don't hesitate to let me know, and I'll be happy to put the kibosh to it. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:43, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Timeline of the Troubles in Europe

[edit]

Hi, new mentor, I created this topic sort of as a companion piece to the Timeline of the Troubles in Great Britain and Timeline of the Troubles in the Republic of Ireland. I thought The Troubles in Europe deserved their own topic. Timeline of the Troubles in Europe - What do you think mate? Shanegallager (talk) 20:31, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shanegallager - Hi there, and welcome to Wikipedia! I gave the page a quick look-through, and overall, everything seems to look great. I would recommend, however, moving the references listed under the "Sources" section at the very end of the page, removing that section, and combining those references to be listed under the "References" section. If you have questions about that or if you need assistance, let me know and I'll be more than happy to help you. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:46, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Bob

[edit]

I think I've seen a picture of you before. Is your real name Bob Ross? JohnMLoftus (talk) 00:21, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JohnMLoftus - Nah, he's (unfortunately) been dead since 1995 (I actually didn't know when he died so I went and checked the Wikipedia article on him to read about it). Yes, my hair is ridiculous. Whoever threw that into my family gene pool has never been determined. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:48, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IRC

[edit]

Hi Oshwah, I just IRC'ed you. I don't think we should bring this up on talk pages. Myrealnamm (💬pros · 📜cons) 00:39, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Myrealnamm - Okay, let me take a look... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:48, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from ChromeAndy (08:10, 8 November 2024)

[edit]

how can I improve the lipstick goby article? --ChromeAndy (talk) 08:10, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ChromeAndy: Hi, it's CiaPan (talk) (talk page stalker) here. As a very first thing I would convert the subsection titles from '''''<big>Title</big>''''' into == Title == form. --CiaPan (talk) 09:02, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from A person of sorts (18:09, 9 November 2024)

[edit]

Good morning-

So I have created four articles on wikipedia. However, only one of them has appeared in google searches. Is there something I did wrong in my creation of these articles? --A person of sorts (talk) 18:09, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editor(s) adding unsourced content

[edit]

There is an anon or anons who appear to be using multiple IPs adding unsourced content, to articles. Most of the IPs geolocate to Montreal and one nearby. Meat? Some edits just add categories which mostly are not supported by the article. Some add the names of artists influenced to articles such as Cultural impact of Beyoncé. Interestingly, Trainsskyscrapers (talk · contribs) restored the anon's edit with references (I think). 69.158.123.230 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is a good example of these edits. I started putting together a list of IPs User:Adakiko/sandbox. I'm getting overwhelmed. Any suggestions? Cheers Adakiko (talk) 10:09, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Query on NOEDIT tag

[edit]

Hello, I am rather new to the scene and has completed one article (Syed Nizamuddin Bin Sayed Khassim). I have plans to write other articles but the fact that my article doesn't show up on search engines due to the presence of "NOEDIT" &/or "DISALLOW" tags, which I've no idea how to remove - I am not sure if I have the motivation to proceed with other articles in the pipeline.
