adding a Wikipedia page on a new genus

Hello, I was just browsing the Wikipedia pages on orchids (my interest) and saw that the page on Psychopsis (titled "Psychopsis") says that there are five species in Psychopsis. The problem is that there are only four species because one of them was moved to a new genus (Psychopsiella). The change is widely accepted and is listed in the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families, which is endorsed by Kew. Would it be possible to create a new page on Psychopsiella? I have just started to do more research to make it a meaningful article and wanted to know if the creation of a Psychopsiella page is warranted.

Thanks!

(talk page stalker) @JadeSpire: Yes, just run it through AfC, as long as you have reliable sources to back it up. NonsensicalSystem(err0r?)(.log) 11:42, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi JadeSpire! As NonsensicalSystem said above, definitely go through the articles for creation process to create a draft of this article. This way, you'll have access to assistance from experienced users and creators, and you'll have all the time you need in order to write the article, receive assistance (if needed), get it to the point where it's ready, and have it approved to be posted as an article in the mainspace. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks for the message, and I wish you good luck with writing the article. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:21, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

Curious about why a block shows on a different IP address' talk page

I saw a block on 49.195.142.189 IP address stating user can't edit Rosetta Stone for two weeks but that IP address never edited that article. Is that a bug? Just curious.--The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 16:36, 1 March 2020 (UTC)

It's not a block on that IP. It's a very wide range block that affects that IP and all other IPs in the 49.195. range.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:41, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi The Eloquent Peasant! Nope, it's not a glitch at all. As Bbb23 stated above, this is a partial block that I imposed on the IP range 49.195.0.0/16 due to long-term IP hopping and adding vandalism and disruption to the article. This way, other editors within that range will be able to edit as normal, they just will not be able to edit Rosetta Stone. This, to me, was the best way to address the issue while keeping any possible collateral damage to a minimum. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:25, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

Request

Hi, I'm Abelmoschus Esculentus and I'm back. I have thought about this for a while and I have decided to come back since I'm an old man over 70 and dosent have much time to spend except playing violin. But the problem is when I left I thought I would never come back so I logged off my account and don't remember my passwords, is there a way to recover my account? So sorry for wasting your time.2402:3A80:A16:1664:0:13:C4E8:5701 (talk) 07:56, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi, Abelmoschus Esculentus, it's (talk page stalker) CiaPan here. If you:
  • have defined your e-mail address in your Wikipedia user's preferences, and
  • have not removed it when leaving Wikipedia, and
  • still have an access to that mailbox,
then the page Help:Reset password and the section Help:Logging in#What if I forget the password? contain guidelines for you. Otherwise I'm afraid your only option is to create a new account. --(talk page stalker) CiaPan (talk) 08:20, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi CiaPan, I removed my email from my preferences when I left as I was so desperate at that timr, I thought I'd never come back so I removed all details from my account. Maybe Oshwah can suggest something, awaiting his comment. 2402:3A80:A16:1664:0:13:C4E8:5701 (talk) 09:55, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

You may think you removed e-mail from your account, but you did not. You should be able to reset your password.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:38, 8 March 2020 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)You likely will need to make a new account sadly, try entering the passwords you think it might be. Otherwise, you will need to make a new account, and find some way to prove you are not an imposter, since you were a well known user before, we dont want someone to be pretending to be you. LakesideMinersCome Talk To Me! 16:04, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
LakesideMiners, I had the rollback, pending changes reviewer and new page reviewer rights on Wikipedia. I also made user scripts and userboxes, many users requested me to make these. My rollback right was revoked twice for misuse. The second time when my rollback right was revoked, I was also blocked by Ritchie for edit warring. That's when I left Wikipedia. Hope that's enough to prove my identity.2402:3A80:A92:7A70:0:4F:F4BE:2E01 (talk) 07:33, 8 March 2020 (UTC)
  • @LakesideMiners: that IP geolocates to India whereas Abelmoschus wrote on his userpage that he lives in Hong Kong. It is most probably a sock trying to troll Oshwah and his talk page watchers. WP:DENY and move on. Don't feed the trolls. Spanishgirlswantmypesos (talk) 10:15, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
    • Plus Abel is most certainly not a 70 year violin-playing man as I inferred based on his edits Spanishgirlswantmypesos (talk) 10:17, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Spanishgirlswantmypesos, most probably you are a sock because it's highly unlikely that a very new, non autoconfirmed user like you would know so many of our policies and guidelines based on your edits. 2402:3A80:A92:7A70:0:4F:F4BE:2E01 (talk) 10:56, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

You are mistaken. I learned some basics about Wikipedia during a briefing session in school. Also, this is not rocket science. Spanishgirlswantmypesos (talk) 11:26, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
Spanishgirlswantmypesos, your first few edits clearly state you know much more than what is called basic, at this point I am pretty sure you are someone's sock. And I am currently in Chennai and will depart for Hong Kong on 13th for your kind information. 2402:3A80:A92:7A70:0:4F:F4BE:2E01 (talk) 11:51, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) @Spanishgirlswantmypesos and 2402:3A80:A92:7A70:0:4F:F4BE:2E01: Please stop casting aspersions unless you have proof of anything. NonsensicalSystem(err0r?)(.log) 12:05, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Elisa Lam

I know it's probably not, but is her own blog a reliable source? --Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 04:15, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Thegooduser: No, blogs are not considered reliable sources. See WP:SPS. Interstellarity (talk) 15:52, 8 March 2020 (UTC)
As Interstellarity stated above, blogs are not generally considered reliable sources. This is especially true due the fact that it's neither a secondary source, nor is it independent of the article subject. Take a look at Wikipedia's policies on reliable sources here and here if you have any questions. If these pages still leave you with questions, let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:32, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Question about username

I ran across this username, [REDACTED - Oshwah] and saw that you reverted their edits, but forgot to block. I would think this username violates the username policy, but not sure why you decided to hold off on blocking the account. Interstellarity (talk) 19:19, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Interstellarity! The user is blocked; I hid the username from the block log due to its offensive username (as well as the user creation log and any edits this user made to pages). This will hide that pink block notification that you'd normally see on the user's contributions page and pages within that account's user space from non-admins. This was done in order to hide the username as much as possible and from all pages and logs. It has no place anywhere on Wikipedia and therefore was hidden accordingly. Fear not; all has been handled. ;-) Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks for the message and for letting me know about this. I'd much rather have someone bring concerns like this to me in good faith just to have it be a non-issue than to have someone not bring this to my attention and have it be an actual mistake or action that I overlooked. ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:00, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Do all the revisions containing the username need to be suppressed? Is it a big deal if they are? Interstellarity (talk) 20:37, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Interstellarity - Well, let's define "suppression" vs "revision deletion" first, just so there's no confusion... ;-)
Revision deletion (or "redaction") is where any admin can hide the action/target/revision text, the edit/log summary, and/or the username/IP address of the performing user from page revisions and logs. Use of this tool is restricted under the criteria for redaction, and each action created an entry in the public log that anyone can review. Suppression (or "oversight") works in the exact same way as redaction. The only exception is that Oversighters have access to another checkbox on the deletion page that, when ticked, says that "this is a suppression instead of a redaction" - which changes the removal to be visible only to oversighters (not even administrators have access to suppressed content). Use of suppression is restricted under the criteria for suppression, and such actions do not create any public logs.
Now that we've clearly defined both "redaction" and "suppression" and know the difference between the two: The redaction (rev del) of disallowed usernames from logs and page histories depends largely on the nature of the username, as well as how severe of a violation the username is. Usernames that simply advertise, promote, represent a company or organization rather than an individual person, or even those that are disruptive (but not grossly offensive) - don't need to be redacted from any logs or pages. I just handle those as necessary and move on. However, usernames that are blatantly or obviously highly insulting, degrading, or offensive, blatantly libelous, or those that make threats of harm or violence or attempt to engage in "outing" or "doxing" of other editors - I will not only block the account, but will also redact that username from all logs, page histories, and wherever else possible within reason. Libelous usernames that violate Wikipedia's policies on BLP are usually suppressed from all logs and pages (again, it depends...).
On one random subject: I've also redacted the username of editors from relevant page histories (but not any logs) if the username was a blatant attempt to impersonate the article subject of an obviously-famous person. An example would be an account with username "TheRealBarrackObama" making changes to the Barrack Obama (and related) articles. I would block this user, give them the proper blocking notice with instructions in order to contact the proper team and prove their identity, and I'd remove their username from the history of those pages under RD5 pending the authentication of the user's identity. This is due to the fact that other users, editors, and readers could be confused by the username, believe it to be from an account actually belonging to that person, and hence all of their edits, comments, change, and claims made are true. This could open the door to issues with libel, false statements, false identity, and other big problems... Hence, I use RD5 for that purpose and under this very situation.
To answer your question in a nutshell: It depends on the username, how bad it is, and the damage, issues, and disruption that are possible if many others were to read that username. I'm sorry if my response here was much more in-depth and lengthy than you expected or wanted, but I wanted to answer your question fully and make sure that any relevant terms that could be mixed up and misunderstood were defined so that were was no confusion. :-) Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. RMCDbot 2

I have made a suggestion to improve the code of RMCDbot on the user's talk page - it has left some "clutter" behind when removing some "transcluded notice of move discussion" which points to the talk page when a move discussion no longer exists because users removed silly discussions. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 15:58, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Iggy the Swan! Excellent! Thanks for taking the time to do that! Tell me about it - the top of my user talk page shows how I felt. It will remain up there until sport is back in full swing in the British Isles and no-one gets ill. People are not isolating themselves when they're ill, causing the disease to be pandemic. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 15:08, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Iggy the Swan - We're definitely in a unique and interesting time in humanity and global society right now... If anything, I hope that this COVID-19 event results in some changes that will make good personal habits stick with everyone, as well as implement good changes to help countries better handle and stop the spread of cases that occur in the future. Knowing humanity and the fact that human history shows how we repeat the same mistakes and stupid decisions over, and over, and over... I'm not holding my breath. :-P ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:50, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
It's always likely that there are more people with it than the number of reported cases.
I should think sport seasons should continue in the normal manner around the world and Tom Hanks continues filming after catching it. The consequences may be to delay the start of newer seasons but that's for WP:CRYSTAL to read. The Queen and Jimmy Carter are two examples to be concerned about rather than the annual sporting events. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 22:03, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

User talk:163.129.251.97

Hi. Since you are an admin, and the last to give a final warning to User 163.129.251.97, I thought I'd let you know that that IP has resumed its vandalism. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 18:03, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

@Nightscream: (talk page stalker) Oshwah issued the warning 2 years ago. The IP could be a different person. I don't think blocking the IP is appropriate until the user has been issued recent warnings. Interstellarity (talk) 19:03, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi Nightscream! As Interstellarity pointed out above: This IP user was last warned on October 18, 2017 (by me) for vandalism (you can click here to see the diff). Since so much time has passed, as well as the fact that this IP is tagged as a school (meaning that it's shared among many people), the likelihood that this is the same person causing the disruption from this IP and from many years ago is pretty much zero. We just need to properly handle and respond to the vandalism as we normally would: By removing the vandalism and disruption that this IP user adds, leaving appropriate warnings on the user's talk page asking them to stop the behavior, and reporting the repeated vandalism and blatant disruption by this user to the appropriate noticeboard after enough warnings have been left to no avail. :-) Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, or if you need input or assistance with anything else. I'll be more than happy to lend a hand and make sure that the project continues to function smoothly. :-) Thank you for letting me know about the concern. I'd much rather have you report something that you believe requires immediate attention just for it to turn out to be nothing of concern, than for you to be blinded by false feelings of discouragement, fear of retaliation or getting flack in return, or hesitation due to not wanting to bother anyone - and not report a concern to me just find out that it was something that really needed immediate attention. Keep that in mind... ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:26, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

About Joaan bin Hamad

Hello,

First of all thank you for informing me.

I am in talks with the communication department in QOC. I would like to add some correct information on HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani's page. Can you please help me how I can continue about this?

ST190324 (talk) 10:50, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi ST190324! Welcome to Wikipedia! Modifying content such as this needs to be accompanied by an in-line citation or a reference to a reliable source. Unreferenced content can be challenged and removed. If the content is not correct as it is, and if no reference or source is provided that adequately supports it, you can resolve the issue in the interim by removing it (just make sure you explain your removal in the edit summary). Then, things will at least be temporarily improved or improved somewhat while you locate a reliable source to support the changes you wish to make.
On a side note, are you being paid or compensated in any way to edit Wikipedia? If so, you're required to disclose this information. Just follow the directions provided here in order to do this. I'd also advise reviewing Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines as well. You need to be sure that you don't have any personal conflicts of interest with the article subject before you continue editing the article.
Please let me know if you have any more questions after reviewing the policies and guidelines I've link you to here. I'll be more than happy to answer them and help you further if you do. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:02, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi Oshwah! Thank youu! I am trying to do the writing things as you did. I hope I am doing right. Ok it is fine to stay like Doha.
I am not getting paid for Wikipedia edits for sure. Just trying to help. Can I do it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ST190324 (talkcontribs) 11:20, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi ST190324! Of course you can help! We welcome and encourage everyone to join, contribute, and improve Wikipedia! :-) Since you're brand new here, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you make any edits or take on any major tasks around here. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be very helpful to you. Most users who take this advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and saved them hours of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise. This is the best thing you can do in order to help Wikipedia! If you go through the entire tutorial, you'll gain a significant amount of walkthroughs, learning, and information, and you'll be able to use that knowledge to make significantly more meaningful and higher-quality contributions to Wikipedia and much sooner than you'd be able to without completing it. I think it'll be good for you, and I urge you to consider going through it! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 11:24, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

So I made fircking mistake of leaving my laptop charger "hanging" in the air when it was on the dc jack, this was about for 35 mins, i plugged it in the jack, and the charger was not untied so it was hanging on the edge, wondering if it does any severe damage (the charger it's self is those typical dell chargers with the fat box thing that gets hot in the middle) , nothing seems wrong or damaged though... --Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 02:49, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

NonsensicalSystem - Don't let trolls and idiots discourage you. Fighting vandalism and reverting disruption can get frustrating - especially when the user is going rampant and when it takes a long time for an admin to finally block them. Trust me, I've been there. Take a break and clear your head; don't let dumb stuff like that get to you. If anything, you're giving these users exactly what they want by letting their behavior affect you. :-) It's people like us that are here and active on this project who cleans up these messes, and we often have to step into a large pile of disruption and abuse. Odd message

I received this odd message on my talk page. Can you figure out what it is and why the IP posted it there? Interstellarity (talk) 22:53, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Interstellarity - I'm not gonna lie: That message makes absolutely no sense to me. Have you by chance been involved with the Spanish flu article or its talk page? This is the only other edit this IP has made; maybe he/she thought that you were associated with it somehow? The contributions of the /64 range show an extensive edit history... Do any of the pages or articles they recently edited look familiar to you? If not, then I have no idea... I'd perhaps respond and just ask the user what in the heck they're talking about (not with those exact words, of course... lol). WHY WAS MY PAGE DELETED

why did you delete my page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Izzy Produx (talkcontribs) 00:23, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Izzy Produx! Welcome to Wikipedia! Your user page was deleted under U5 and G11 of Wikipedia's speedy deletion criteria. Specifically, your user page is not to be used as a host for content that isn't Wikipedia-related. Wikipedia is not a social network, nor is it a place for self-promotion. Please review Wikipedia's policy on what may not be on user pages so that you understand it, and please let me know if you have any questions. Re: Your warm welcome

The sole edit I'd made before you deleted "User:Andrew Kvalheim" without prior notice was to add contact information. You could have at least used it. People warned me that the Wikipedia community was toxic but I expected a little more courtesy than this. — Andrew Kvalheim (talk) 02:41, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Andrew Kvalheim, and welcome to Wikipedia! I apologize if my deletion came off as being brash or "toxic" toward you. It was not my intent. I was going through some creation logs (namely, creation logs that were tagged as likely to be spam or advertising). I thought that your user page may have been intended solely to promote the URL you provided, so I deleted it under U5 of Wikipedia's speedy deletion criteria. I've gone ahead and restored it for you; I'm sure that you meant well, and I'd rather side toward good faith and caution rather than the latter. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to help you further. Please accept my apologies, and I hope you have a great day. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:46, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Hello Oshwah! Am still getting my way around wikipedia. I wanted to write a page about me. But you deleted it. Lol — Preceding unsigned comment added by RosaSaade (talkcontribs) 12:03, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi RosaSaade! Welcome to Wikipedia! Be careful, as user pages are supposed to be primarily Wikipedia-related. Wikipedia isn't for social networking, nor is it for advertising or promotion (including self-promotion). See this section of Wikipedia's user page policy for more information.
Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you make any edits or take on any major tasks around here. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be very helpful to you. Most users who take this advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and saved them hours of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise. Please let me know if you have any questions, or if there's anything I can help you with, and I'll happy to lend a hand. :-) Thanks for the message, and I wish you a warm welcome and happy editing! Pointimage deleted page

Hi, I'm Mike from Mstar (Asia) holding Company. I'm writing a Wikipedia page on Pasit Viwatkurkul. I follow all guidelines and rules. I don't understand why you deleted the page? Is it due to the name PointImage? If so please tell me in detail how the page have error. If there is error then we can fix it. But a deletion is a bit harsh. Please let me know your concern. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pointimage (talkcontribs) 13:22, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Pointimage! Welcome to Wikipedia! Are you writing about yourself? Or someone else? I was under the impression that you were trying to make a "profile" about yourself on your user page. If this isn't the case, please accept my apologies; I'll be happy to restore the page for you. I highly recommend that you go through Wikipedia's articles for creation process and work on this page there instead of your user page. This way, you'll have more access to assistance and relevant guides to walk you through things. Again, please accept my apologies - I'll go ahead and restore the page for you. Thanks for letting me know. Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:27, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

KXEG AM 1280 Edit

Hi there, and thanks for messaging me with your honest explanation regarding your edits. Just know that we cannot cite "ourselves" as a reference when adding content to articles. This means that we cannot cite our personal relationships, knowledge, experience, or even our own research and data on Wikipedia. This is known as original research, and it is not allowed on Wikipedia. As an example, I cannot cite my personal knowledge of London, England and the fact that I lived there if I were to add content to the article. This situation with your edits apply in the exact same way. :-) Thanks again for the message, and I wish you a great day. Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:09, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Huggle Question

Hello! How are you? I had a question, so when I use Huggle and mark it as a good edit it welcomes the user, which is a bit annoying. Do you know how to make it so it does not do that. Thanks The4lines (talk) 14:54, 22 March 2020 (UTC)The4lines

Hi The4lines! How exactly do you mark the edit as 'good'? Do you do it by pressing the button at the top of the interface? Or do you do it by pressing the shortcut key? You can configure the shortcut key and exactly what it does by changing your preferences on Huggle (System --> Preferences). If you use the button at the top, it should only mark the edit as good by default; it shouldn't automatically leave a welcome message... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:08, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
I press the green button on the top. The4lines (talk) 15:20, 22 March 2020 (UTC)The4lines
The4lines - And it leave a welcome message automatically? Are you sure that you're pressing the correct 'green button'? You should be pressing the one near the left that looks like a pencil, not the one that has a message balloon and a smiley face. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:25, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I think it is that one but I may be wrong. Thanks The4lines (talk) 15:29, 22 March 2020 (UTC)The4lines
The4lines - I'll have to test it on my Huggle installation and see what happens... Who knows, I could've been wrong the entire time and that button may actually leave welcome messages automatically... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:40, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

The4lines - I'm on Huggle now. Once I find a good edit by someone who does not have a user talk page created yet, I'll use the button and see what happens. I'll let you know as soon as I find out... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:51, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
The4lines - I just tested it; pushing the 'good edit' button on the GUI will automatically create a welcome message for that user. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:53, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Interesting... How do you do so it does not do that. Also do you mind telling me how to change my signature. Thanks. The4lines (talk) 01:55, 23 March 2020 (UTC)The4lines

The4lines - Try using the hotkey instead of pressing the button. The default hotkey for marking an edit as 'good' is the 'G' key. See if this acts differently and let me know... :-) You can change your signature by navigating to your preferences page. Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:00, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

You bet! :) I try it tomorrow as I don’t have time right now, also I need more help with the sig. as I don’t understand how to fix it and stuff. Thanks The4lines (talk) 02:41, 23 March 2020 (UTC)The4lines
It still sends a welcome, even with the hotkey. Thanks The4lines (talk) 15:01, 10 April 2020 (UTC)The4lines
Hi The4lines! Sorry for the delay responding to your message here. Were you able to figure it out? Have you asked your question on the Huggle feedback page? If you haven't, I highly recommend doing so, as someone there may have an answer. As far as my testing has gone, I was incorrect with my original thought; Huggle seems to automatically include a welcome message in this situation, and I don't see that there is a setting in the program's settings or UI to disable it. :-/ ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:43, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
Hello Oshwah, how are you? Sorry for the delay in response, hmmm I have not been able to play around with Huggle as the computer I have Huggle one is acting funny. I try to get one that later. I will ask and see. Thanks! :) The4lines (talk) 03:22, 16 April 2020 (UTC)The4lines

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. :-) Thanks - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:28, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Mark Walport BLP issue

Hi Oshwah - hope you're keeping well in the current chaos. You and I seem to have taken opposite sides at a bit of an edit war at Mark Walport today - I wanted to get your take on it quickly, if you've got a moment. The content that I removed (which you reinstated earlier when an IP removed it) asserts that the subject of the article acted in a way that was not compliant with his duty or the law - but the sources do not support that assertion. Indeed, it looks like coatracking off this BLP, since it's really about the institution he was in charge of rather than himself. I think the material should probably be revdelled for the BLP concerns, certainly not reinstated, but I wanted to get your take on it before doing so myself. As ever, your thoughts and guidance would be much appreciated. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 18:58, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Girth Summit! I take absolutely no issue with your removal of the BLP content. I just noticed that an IP user removed content without explaining anything in the edit summary, so I restored it. That was the only reason I reverted that edit. If there's a problem with the content, by all means - remove it (which is exactly what you did). :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:27, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Oshwah, thanks - definitely didn't want to get into an edit war fist fight with you! Would you be willing to comment on the revdel question? I hesitate to revdel an edit of yours, but it looks to me like a serious BLP issue. GirthSummit (blether) 20:43, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Girth Summit - Sorry I didn't answer the question! I reviewed the content in-question, and nothing looked to be serious - that is, until I read the very last sentence. That sentence is not only unreferenced, but can imply that he's violating law. If you think it needs RD2, then I agree and I trust your judgment - go for it. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:48, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Yeah - it was the last sentence I was worried about. I'll do it now, thanks for the steer, appreciate it. GirthSummit (blether) 20:53, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Girth Summit - Always happy to help! Thank you for messing me about this and for letting me know. I didn't notice the last sentence when reverting, and I wouldn't have done so had I seen it... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:54, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Dibyendu Barua wiki

Hello Oshwah-

This is in regards to my changes on Dibyendu Barua wiki page, which you erased.

I am a journalist and chess enthusiast. The changes I made to Dibyendu Barua page are all supported by other sources. Furthermore saying:

"he one of the greatest chess player in the world." is not only grammatically incorrect it's factually wrong. Barua has not been active in international competitive chess since 2012. His current rating wouldn't put him the top 500 players in the world currently. To call him "one of the greatest chess player in the world" is patently absurd. If you would like to try and defend that statement I'd be glad to hear it.

My changes were are reasonable and factually accurate. I suggest you reinstate them. Yours, Rob Schwartz — Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.100.28.233 (talk) 02:13, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

I agree that the edit by the Indian IP was absurd. I did what Oshwah should have done and restored the original version. There were a few problems with your edit; (1) it was subjective ("from that perspective his success is remarkable") (2) it included unsupported attributions ("some say lack of resources..."), also known as weasel words and (3) it was unsourced. Barua is an interesting player, he probably deserves a better article, but we need solid sources. MaxBrowne2 (talk) 05:38, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
MaxBrowne2 - Thanks for restoring the article further back. I didn't notice that another user had edited the article before this user above, and added similarly problematic content to it. Much appreciated! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:51, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi there! As MaxBrowne2 stated above, your edit did not comply with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The main concern that I had was in regards to Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, which mandates that we word articles to reflect a neutral tone, and avoid any commentary, opinionated statements, bias, or even due and undue weight with the content as a whole. Not only is this policy very important to the community, it is a founding principle behind Wikipedia's foundation as a whole. Please review this policy, and let me know if you have any questions. I'll be happy to answer them if you do. :-) Thanks! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:53, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! I believe that you're talking about the edit you made here to Dennis Chinnery that I removed shortly afterwards. The reason I removed your edit was due to the fact that it did not cite or reference any reliable sources to support your changes. Please review Wikipedia's policies on verifiability, as well as the two links I provided to you in the previous sentence, and let me know if you have any questions. I'll be happy to answer them if you do. :-) Thanks - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:57, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Geoffry on monmouth edit

truly I can understand your point on neutrality, but one thing that passed me is that it seems that your "neutrality" completely rejected the idea of any of this being true. I agree that we cannot offend people in the information, but you must as well report all the facts. I have nothing against your edit, but I just wanted to state my comment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.110.198.244 (talk) 13:27, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! Thanks for leaving me a message regarding the edit you made here to Geoffrey of Monmouth. I'll be happy to explain my removal and point you to the relevant policies and guidelines. The reason I removed your edit was because it did not comply with all of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The main concern that I had was in regards to Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, which mandates that we add content and write articles in order to reflect a completely neutral tone and word use, as well as avoid any commentary, opinionated statements, bias, or even due and undue weight. Your also appeared to consist of content that would've needed to cite a reliable source to support it. Verifiability is also very important to this project. Keep in mind that the two policies I mentioned are two of Wikipedia's founding principles, and depending on the content being added and the article they're being added to, compliance with these policies is something we take very seriously. Please review this policy, and let me know if you have any questions. I'll be happy to answer them if you do. :-) Thanks! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:07, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Inaccurate data on Yancy Butler

This one inaccurate article has been continually reposted. It’s inaccuracy has caused professional harm. It has been rectified by the courts but clearly this is a personal vendetta to slander Ms. Butler by repeatedly posting this spam. Crazyeyes85 (talk) 04:46, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Yancy Butler

I’m new to this format so apologies. The data that is repeatedly being added to Ms Butler’s page is clearly a personal vendetta. It’s in inaccurate and sites the one article by a small town paper. This was not what was brought as a “charge” and by reposting you are damaging her professional career. These charges did not result in anything and they were completely inaccurate. Please stop reposting this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Crazyeyes85 (talkcontribs) 04:50, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Biblioteca Marciana infobox

Hello Oshwah,

I hope all is well. I have a slight problem ... again ... and I am hoping you can help. On the Biblioteca Marciana page, a map (really ugly) is now appearing in the infobox. No changes have been made to the page itself. So I assume this is being generated elsewhere. I specifically did not want the map, and on the coding for the page, it says "no" to the map. Not only is it really ugly, it makes the infobox too long and pushes all of the other images out of alignment with the relative texts. What can I do?Venicescapes (talk) 12:06, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Yesterday Evad37 made a few edits that added automatic mapframe to the {{Infobox library}}. Evad mentions that this was decided at a talk page but there is no recent discussion at the talk page for the template. Evad if you could add a link to the discussion here it might help Venicescapes to understand what is going on. Now this is guesswork on my part so if something else is involved my apologies to everyone. I was just trying to provide some info until Oshwah gets back on-wikiP. MarnetteD|Talk 12:20, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Oops I didn't scroll up far enough. Template talk:Infobox library#Mapframe maps? looks to be the relevant discussion. MarnetteD|Talk 12:25, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
@Venicescapes: It's easy to turn off, just needs |mapframe=no within the {{infobox library}}, which I did here.
@MarnetteD: Thanks for the notification. That is the relevant discussion. - Evad37 [talk] 12:56, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Evad and MarnetteD, thank you for speedy response and help. It looks better. Best wishes.Venicescapes (talk) 13:35, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Evad I just noticed that the following message appears in the middle of the infobox: The template Infobox building is being considered for merging. Can this be removed?Venicescapes (talk) 13:39, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
I'll pop back in here Venicescapes. It can't be removed but what is happening is the discussion here Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2020 March 24#Template:Infobox property development. When that TFD is closed in a week or so that message will disappear. I understand that it can be irritating to see that but if you'll just be patient things will work themselves out eventually. MarnetteD|Talk 14:24, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
MarnetteD Okay. Thank you for the explanation.Venicescapes (talk) 15:22, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi Venicescapes! I apologize for the delay with responding to your message and your request for help. It looks like other editors were able to assist you and resolve the issue. I owe many thanks to MarnetteD and Evad37 for working to help this user and resolve the matter. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:10, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Wondering what to do

Good evening, I made edits to "Cedar Crest College". All of these edits were minor and included information that was up to date. I am currently a student there, and that's how I knew what i put there was correct. What exactly should I cite then? I didn't make and drastic changes, just update what buildings were for. thank you. Aknit123 (talk) 22:36, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Aknit123! Welcome to Wikipedia! I apologize for the delay responding to your message, your questions, and your request for help. In short, you can use any source that's considered reliable and cite it in-line with the content that you're trying to add. Being a student and hearing information third-hand does not count; you have to treat everything you write, expand, and add to on Wikipedia as if the reader has no information on the article subject nor any information about you. You should also assume that the reader will be someone who will often be asking, "how do you know that this is true? Prove it!" This is why citing reliable sources is important. As a student in school, you will repeatedly learn about citing sources and verifying information, as well as be required to do so. The two policy pages I linked you to will give you more information.
Please let me know if you have any more questions or if I can point you to any other resources that can help you, and I'll be more than happy to do so! :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:17, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Unable to create/edit a page about a music label based in Argentina

Hi Oshawa,

I am pretty new to Wikipedia but I recently successfully published an article. I am trying to make a new page for a music production company based in Argentina. But I am getting the following error:

"The page title or edit you have tried to create has been restricted to administrators at this time. It matches an entry on the local or global blacklists, which is usually used to prevent vandalism. If you receive this message when trying to edit, create or move an existing page, follow these instructions:

Any administrator can create or move this page for you. Please post a request at the Administrators' noticeboard. You may also contact an administrator on their talk page or by email."

The company name is " chaos Music". The page doesn't exist on Wikipedia. Please help me out....--Rashijain1992 (talk) 16:38, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)@Rashijain1992: you do not need to post this message in multiple places. This is the third place I have seen it so far. As stated at ANI, where you posted it, make a draft and we will see if it is notable enough to move to article space. ThatMontrealIP (talk) 16:41, 30 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi Rashijain1992, and thank you for leaving me a message here with your questions and your request for help. The reason that you're receiving this error when attempting to create the article is because an administrator has protected it from creation due to the history of spam, issues, and abuse with previous creation attempts. As ThatMontrealIP stated above, you'll need to follow the instructions listed on this page in order to create a draft of your article. Doing this has many advantages: It allows you to easily ask for and receive help by experienced editors, it gives you all the time you need in order to learn, review guidelines, and expand your draft article, and it allows for experienced editors to review and approve of your draft and have it published as an article (assuming no problems are found).
However, since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you make any edits or take on any major tasks around here. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be very helpful to you. Most users who take this advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and saved them hours of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise. Please let me know if I can answer any more questions for you, and I'll be happy to do so. :-) Cheers, and good luck! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:24, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
