About Me
[edit]Hello! I'm interested in the taxonomy and identification of orchids, primarily those of North America, Australia, and New Zealand, although I am expanding to other continents as well. My identification skills lie mainly within the orchids of North America, and I am slowly starting to tackle the orchid diversity found in Australasia. I tend to focus on the mostly terrestrial subfamily Orchidoideae, as well as terrestrial members of the Epidendroideae, though all orchids fascinate me. On Wikipedia, my goal is to create and improve botany-related pages, especially those related to orchids. Besides botany, I also take a special interest in Latin and Roman history.
I highly encourage you to join the platform iNaturalist. In brief, it's a citizen science platform where users can upload media of any organism(s) they encounter. Other users with varying degrees and fields of expertise can then identify the organism(s) depicted accordingly. It's a great place to learn more about nature, as well as taxonomy and identification. I've always been interested in orchids, but it is there that I was able to build the majority of my identification skills and get a better grasp on orchid taxonomy. More importantly, I got to know a community of people similarly interested in orchids who are greatly, greatly knowledgeable and more than willing to share their expertise. I know for a fact that there a similar communities for many, many other taxa. If you'd like to learn more, you can poke around iNaturalist's website (maybe start here), and you can always read iNaturalist's Wikipedia page, if you'd like. My username on iNaturalist is catullus, like the Roman poet, and you can find my profile here.
My personal pages are here; they mainly consist of a few drafts that I've put away for later. For fun, I am also compiling a list of pages I have created or expanded, similar to the very impressive users Peter coxhead and Gderrin. It is currently very short, but you can find that here.
