Find a peaceful and mature solution

Dear Mr. Michael J. Lowrey (Administrator Orangemike)

I am writing to you because I want to find a peaceful, mature solution with you which will please both of us. The situation is that I edited several articles concerning British education lately. I am very engaged in the study of the Education System of the United Kingdom and simply wanted to delete archaic and out-of-date information which have no contemporary relevance and to therefore simplify British education articles to make them more succinct and easier to read. Of course, Orangemike (if I may call you by your username), I understand that editing Wikipedia articles is also subjective to a great extent. I also understand that you as the administrator are in charge and obviously more powerful within Wikipedia than me so that I am approaching you, as explained before, to ask you for a peaceful and sophisticated solution to our "conflict".

Reading your user page I was actually surprised that you disapproved of my editing geared towards shortening articles since you seem to be (just like me) a supporter of the delitionist wing within the inclusionist-delitionist debate.

I only saw this measure as a way of contacting you because I would not create an account since the one and only topic I am really interested in editing is just the British education system.

Thank you for your time.

Best, R. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:1205:5038:BEC0:108D:21A6:849E:8560 (talk) 18:08, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

I tend to the deletionist side because I believe that we need fewer, but better articles here. Your edits were all removals of information, simply in order to shorten the articles. If information is accurate, and sourced, there is no reason whatsoever to remove it. We are not a paper encyclopedia; there is no merit in terseness qua terseness. Indeed, we have an entire eco-system of tags called stub tags, dedicated to signaling some willing editor: "Behold, here is an article in a field wherein you've taken an interest: make it longer, more detailed, more encyclopedic."
There is no quarrel between us. I merely ask that you improve articles which you find stale, flat and unprofitable by augmenting them: by adding details, nuances, subtleties, of which an auslander like myself will not be aware, until you enlighten us. Save your metaphorical machete for the partisan, the crusader for The Truth™; for the character assassins and rumormongers; and for the smarmy, the euphemistic, the misleading, and the ever-present peacock words of which the advertiser and the huckster are so fond. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:53, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

I thought I would be able to find a peaceful solution by writing to you in a polite way. I was obviously wrong. You don't seem to be interested in any way to solve the problem which occurred. Instead, after reading your last post, I believe you simply wanted to degrade me in your last post; demonstrating your "power" in order to strengthen your(supposedly)weak ego. Don't you find it shameful, primitive and immature to get snotty towards a complete stranger just to boost your self-esteem? Especially towards someone who actually approached you in a polite way anyway... I don't know what personal problems you have that makes you behave towards strangers like this but I hope you will get better soon and if you need help then you should get some. It is not shabby if someone gets help. Remember this.

Hopefully, this was not too "smarmy", "euphemistic" and "peacock"-like while still polite. As said before, I am fully aware of your position at Wikipedia and tried to approach you with respect and politeness. However, if you feel that because of your privileges you have to, bluntly speaking, show-off and humiliate others then you shouldn't wonder when there is at least someone who will defy you. Still, I am interested in a peaceful solution and to communicate in a polite and mature manner. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:1205:5038:BEC0:9D46:558:8C88:4392 (talk) 08:49, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

???? I am totally non-plussed by your response to my comments. I am welcoming and urging you to contribute to this project, and explaining the kinds of edits which we find most helpful. I was not accusing you of any of the literary offenses I enumerated, but merely urging you to join the rest of us in expanding the good and trimming the bad. I was not getting snotty towards you, I was welcoming you as a potentially valuable contributor in the fields where you have an interest. I remain gobsmacked and puzzled by your response. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:31, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Dear Admin Orangemike,

In all honesty, but your post is contradictory to me too. You say you would like to welcome me as an editor, yet you blocked all my edits. You say you are a potential deletionist and would welcome me "trimming the bad", yet you rebuked me when I wanted to edit while making articles succinct. And I also don't believe that you would really appreciate me anyway, one editor more or less, it doesn't really matter, especially if the editors' editing is edited by the admin anyway. Be that as it may, whether your post is contradictory or not, whether you are right or wrong or whether I am right or wrong doesn't matter because in a situation where I am a user without any rights whereas you are an admin with all the power and privileges, you will always be right, at least in the spheres of Wikipedia. That's why I believe arguing with you, the admin, makes no sense because me, as an ordinary user, I will always be the loser.

Therefore, I ask you (yes, me, the general user, implores you, the mighty admin) to please accept my edits, to deblock me and to give me back some rights.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:1205:5038:BEC0:142:FB8D:106B:A99F (talk) 13:32, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Steaming piles of crap

Morning Mike. Please could you avoid referring to new editors' attempts to contribute, however pathetic, as "a steaming pile of crap" and "hucksterism".

Pointing out that the submission was "full of promotional language, first-naming and fulsome praise", as well as being a copyright violation, and also mentioning the conflict of interest, would have been entirely sufficient. Many new contributors simply do not know that this is not Facebook or MySpace, and telling them so politely can be effective.

If you can't find it within yourself to avoid such unpleasantness, please do it somewhere I won't see it, and therefore won't be tempted to revert it.

Thank you. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 17:07, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

I concede your point, Demi, and I thank you for calling me on it. While I still feel that my characterization is quite accurate, I concede that it was perhaps not politic to say so out loud. I do not feel, however, that anybody who could post something like that is likely to ever become a useful contributor in the mode of, say, CorporateM. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:35, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
What is the editor/article in question? CorporateM (Talk) 21:13, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
Draft:Dean Graziosi, by User:DGenterprise, who admits that Graziosi is a client of his. It is full of such jewels as, "Dean has been blessed enough to change the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across the whole world with his passion and desire to help others." (and that's not even the worst). --Orange Mike | Talk 23:46, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

OrangeMike: How do you even know who Dean Graziosi is? He in fact has helped thousands of people across the world and for you to make him sound like a "worthless piece of crap" is completely embarrassing. Instead of being an absolute ass hole about the whole situation, you could have simply informed me of the writings you did not like and I could have changed it. Now if you decide to talk like an adult instead of treating me like an uninformed child, I would like to speak with you. A simple edit could have done, the name calling however, was childish. Please contact me when you have a calmer head and are ready to talk. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DGenterprise (talkcontribs) 00:32, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

Since I have never met Graziosi, it would be obnoxious and despicable for me to call him (a human being like myself and yourself) a "worthless piece of crap"; and in fact, I did not do so.
But since I've been writing professionally for thirty years, I do reserve the right to call a piece of promotional drivel a piece of promotional drivel. As User:CorporateM, himself a marketing professional, can attest, I am quite firm in insisting that promotion and publicity find no toeholds here. The piece you posted was entirely composed of promotion: of peacock words, of first-naming and gleeful unsourced claims of marvelousness and a pep-rally tone that may be acceptable in a marketing brochure aimed at the desperate and credulous, but has no place in a reference work such as this. I had naively assumed that everyone understood this by now. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:43, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
It doesn't look like any changes could be made that would make the article acceptable. In order for Mr. Graziosi to qualify for a Wikipedia article, we require at least two credible, independent sources (such as The New York Times, Fortune Magazine, or a respected trade magazine) that have covered him in substantial depth, such as through an extensive profile. My searches for archived newspapers, Google News, Google Books, etc. only reveal press releases and books written by him. He does not qualify for a Wikipedia page. Most "gurus" or "experts" do not, unless they invent something, create a billion dollar business or do something else truly substantial in the scope of world history. CorporateM (Talk) 01:02, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
Regarding @Demiurge1000's point about civility, I do think we should treat all people with respect, even if they are not and will never be useful contributors as a matter of human dignity. OrangeMike has seen me thoughtfully persuade editors to abstain and for them to understand that their objectives cannot be served here; that should be our first reflex and it is much more effective. But it does matter that the article has already been deleted 3 times (4 now) and in the case of that level of persistence, I have more support for beating off the editor with a stick and less sympathy to the article subject who is obviously not getting the hint. I recommend salting the page. CorporateM (Talk) 01:30, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

ZPE Systems

Hi Mike, Thanks for your message regarding my ZPE Systems entry. I made a page about my company ZPE Systems. ZPE has been around since 2013 and have crafted a new type of software appliance that no other company has created in similar fashion, to date, for managing both physical and virtual data center assets. I don't think the format is what's wrong - it's based on a similar company in our industry. Is the lack of "notability" the main cause of deletion? Please advise. We have been covered in the technology press already so am wondering what else is missing. Thank you for your help. I consult for ZPE, and although I am not compensated specifically to promote ZPE on wikipedia, I thought it should be included as another example of a valley tech company startup within a very niche space of data center asset administration. Thanks for any feedback you may have. I can try to rewrite the post keeping in mind COI... 104.36.252.114 (talk) 17:33, 25 September 2014 (UTC) -Ken

Teacher in Sweden needs help

Hello, Orange Mike! I see that you are active with the campus ambassadors program. I was wondering if you can help a user named User:Karin Steen, a teacher in Sweden, who has been trying to set up something to use Wikipedia in her classes. I encountered her when she launched this into mainspace as an article. It was obviously not an article so it got moved to a draft. But apparently what she had in mind was some kind of overall structure to which her students could link while working in their sandboxes. She then asked me on my talk page for help, but I haven't a clue. Do you want to work with her? If you don't have time or inclination, just let me know and I will ask someone else. Thanks! --MelanieN (talk) 18:32, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Question

I don't understand. Somedifferentstuff was constantly reverting my edits. He's done so twice already today. The edit warring page on Wikipedia says I should place that warning on his page, so he doesn't do it a third time (in which case he would be blocked). How can it be vandalism? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnonymousGANGSTA2568 (talkcontribs) 02:44, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

I don't think of "been editing since July of 2012" as being new here. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:00, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
In fairness, depending on how you look at it, only 200 edits since 2012 may still qualify as "new" in the sense of "inexperienced". ~Amatulić (talk) 03:34, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
AnonymousGANGSTA2568 Regarding the article you have shown an interest in, it looks pretty good at-a-glance. It is difficult to write neutral articles on political-related topics, because there is so much campaigning going on for and against the candidate and a lot of spin or mis-information. I don't know what to think of the Business section, because it doesn't seem to explain the significance, if any, of his relationship to Rajat Gupta, except that it exists and seems to be fairly trivial in scope. I am somewhat familiar with the situation with Gupta, due to my COI work on the McKinsey & Company page, where he use to be the managing director (CEO). For the McKinsey page there are significant sources that discuss the effect the situation has on them and their reputation, but in this case there doesn't seem to be anything except "hey he knows the guy in the news." And if $50k is trivial to him as described, than he must have some more substantial business dealings than just that. Cheers. CorporateM (Talk) 05:12, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

I wish we could add non-existent pages to our watchlist, so we can watch to see if someone else re-creates it. I am betting that page will sprout up again and the game of wack-a-mole will continue. Surely it would have been more effective (albeit a bit more work) to peacefully get the COI editor to understand why their objectives cannot be achieved here, rather than creating the impression that they are being treated with hostility unfairly and should in the future better shroud their efforts and avoid other editors. Roger Jenkins Theatre Director

Dear Orangemike,

Thank you for your comments.I am new to Wikipedia and am floundering around. Hopefully, I am correctly communicating with you now.

I have many theatre programmes supporting my submission but fail to see how I can refer to these for the purposes of citation.

I am not close to Roger Jenkins, I merely know him. However, like many people, I believe his extensive contribution to our theatre and TV entertainment over a number of decades deserves to be recorded and published.

Do your comments mean that my submission is rejected? I am unclear and welcome your further advice.

Many thanks,

KeithKeithhmorris (talk) 10:30, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

There are two problems as a I see it. The first one, if properly addressed, may enable us to deal with the second. The first is that you simply don't have proper citations for much of anything in the draft article. Citations are a sine qua non; we must have them, and they must be formatted properly, in order for the reader to know that what they are reading is not made up. Please take a look at this article, and provide citations to published sources, not old playbills and the like buried in archives somewhere. If such sources can be found, then we can know whether the allegations of Jenkins' notability can be substantiated (the second issue I mentioned). --Orange Mike | Talk 12:30, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi Keith and Mike. I've had a look at Draft:Roger Jenkins (director) and done some fairly radical work on it. Take a look at it now. More importantly, see my lengthy comment at Draft talk:Roger Jenkins (director) on the way forward. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 14:36, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

Deleted Article for Creation

Good Afternoon,

You have recently deleted my Article for Creation/Daniel Kanu, and I am not sure why. Could you please kindly give me an explanation since I am really new on Wikipedia and still trying to catch up with everything.

Thank You and Regards Ljiljana K (talk) 14:36, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Ljiljana K

This was done as a courtesy action subsequent to the discussion on the Wikipedia Help page, since the Article for Creation was duplicative of the Draft:Daniel Kanu page, which could lead to confusion. It's never a good idea to have both a Draft: and an Article for Creation going simultaneously. Good luck with the Draft article! --Orange Mike | Talk 14:53, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Change from "Athlete"

I just discovered you have moved Edward Burke (athlete) to Edward Burke (hammer thrower). I object because this was not discussed. OK, maybe it was discussed somewhere, but it was not mentioned on the article. In regards to other similar over specificity I have objected, so this is an underhanded trick to eliminate my comments from the discussion in order to push through this unnecessary, POV laden move. I know, you are just an admin doing the work, but we should discuss it and it is not fair to cause such drastic action, multiple actions, without inviting involved editors into the discussion. A handful of editors are trying to snowball this kind of move into our structure. There are no other track and field athletes named Edward Burke. Trackinfo (talk) 06:48, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

There are, however, a number of other Edward Burkes who are also athletes. If it actually matters to you, there's no reason it couldn't be moved to "track and field athlete"; in fact, I'll do that ASAP. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:27, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
Done. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:29, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
Here's the issue: My concern is for the common disambiguator wikipedia wide. Some individuals have jumped in saying "(athlete)" is wrong because Footy players or American Football Players could all be considered athletes. And athletics instead of track and field is not a common term in the USA. I'm fine with a change but there are so many . . . thousands . . . of articles that need this change. We need a real discussion to decide what to change it to, so things match and make sense. GBR needs to argue it out with USA to come to a decision. Instead we are doing a handful at a time finding a new gullible admin to do the work with each package kind of made up as they go. I see chaos down the road. As long as they keep chipping away at what exists now, we will never find all these articles to unify them when a decision is made. Of course, so few people care about the sport, we are still talking about trying to get a consensus from a handful of people. Trackinfo (talk) 22:23, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
Athletics (sport) is a bizarre usage and totally new to me; in most of the English-speaking world, "athletics" is just a more polite or pretentious was of saying "sports". Disambiguation pages are not a good place to exercise WP:ENGVAR in this way. I do not mean to disparage ENGVAR or the events, many of them of great antiquity, included under that header. But try telling an American that Aaron Rodgers is not an athlete, or a Canadian that Wayne Gretzky was not an athlete: hoo-boy, fiddler bar the door! --Orange Mike | Talk 22:36, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
I understand. Here in the US Dale Earnhardt is an athlete. The issue is WP:TITLECHANGES that affect thousands of articles should be discussed and changed on a wholesale basis. We need a decision before action. Trackinfo (talk) 23:36, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Probable paid editor(s) and problematic articles

Hi Mike. I need some advice. Also pinging DGG. Alarm bells ring when I see a series of non-related articles on non-notable blp/commercial subjects by the same editor (who has clearly edited under a different account before). All of them were created fully formed—complete with infobox and "padded" references. See:

I'm also concerned that the editor who has marked several of these articles as "reviewed" or "patrolled" is likewise creating articles which have all the hallmarks of paid editing. See [3].

Dear Sir, Thank you so much for the note regarding my father's photo. I had sent a note to citing that it was a family photo taken by my mother in 1954. So, that the photo can be added back, please help me with returning it to the page. I will do what is required today if you can please assist me. Realize that I am an "old girl" and thus not very savy in computer protocol. Here is my letter of statement that you can use to reinstate the photo. I hereby affirm that I, Ellen Conant Krohn, the creator and sole owner of the exclusive copyright of Judge Alonzo Conant (photo).File:ACphoto.jpg/thumb/Judge Alonzo Conant ,https://commons,wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AC_photo.jpg. The problem is not technological but legal. You are not the creator of that photo, your mother was. Her estate retains the copyright and will for many years to come. You would need to establish who inherited her intellectual property when she died. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:44, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Judge Alonzo Conant jpg deletion by Ronhjones

Dear Sir:

My father died in 1962, my mother died in 1997, her estate was left to me and my sister. My sister had given the photo to me in 1997. This should clarify the ownership. Help. What do I do next?

I think I could use some help here. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:05, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
The place to ask is Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. My non-expert opinion is that while the image is probably not "free" - ownership of a copy of the photo does not give copyright, which normally belongs to the photographer - it should be possible to use it in an article under the non-free content criteria. JohnCD (talk) 15:32, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your continued assistance regarding the re-posting of my deceased father's photo that is owned solely by me to the Wikipedia page: Alonzo Conant. Given the fact that you are an Administrator for the site and my "in good faith" substantiation of my ownership of this photo, would you kindly re-post his photo to the page? I assure you, legally, Wikipedia will never be in any legal debt in regards to my father's photo. I have provided everything needed and now I just need to know when you folks will re-post my father's photo to the : Alonzo Conant page. The photo is of importance and supportive to the page. It has been posted for over a year, and those who have viewed the page have appreciated and approved of the photo. Please let me know when this will be replaced. Thank you in advance. In appreciation of your concern and assistance. Sincerely, Ellen Conant Krohn (Econantkrohn47 (talk) 18:09, 16 October 2014 (UTC)) daughter of Alonzo Conant

(talk page stalker) The issue is not ownership of the physical photo, but ownership of the copyright. That said, I agree with JohnCD that the image should be covered by fair use. Huon (talk) 19:00, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
I have restored a low-resolution version of the file that complies with the non-free content criteria. If you can provide evidence that you own not just the physical photo, but the copyright as well, please do so. Huon (talk) 19:15, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Category: School board members in Wisconsin

Hi Mike-Many thanks for starting the Category: School board members in Wisconsin. Okay-in starting articles about Wisconsin legislators-the Wisconsin Blue Book legislators biographies mention that those legislators were clerks of the school boards, directors of school boards, board of education, even high school boards. This can be interpreted as being the same office. A clarification? Thanks-RFD (talk) 12:40, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

I'd say that "director of the school board" is more like Superintendent of Schools, even if it's elected by the school board from among their own number; whereas if Milwaukee is any example, in the 19th century "commissioner of schools" meant you were on a multi-member "school commission"= school board. Clerk of the board sounds like a position not held by a board member. A high school board is the board of education for a separate high-school district: you'd have six to ten local boards for six to ten primary/middle schools (one-room or two-room); then a single unitary high school with its own board. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:49, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Bands

Do you have any experience on band pages? I was hoping to get some input on whether "Twice as Good" warrants an article (see sourcing:[5][6][7]) The sources look good/in-depth, but have a strong local California leaning, as oppose to national level sources.

I pinged user:DGG[8], but he said he doesn't have much familiarity with band pages. He did point me to Native American Music Awards where the band is listed. I have zero experience doing band pages, because any inquiry I have received were obviously non-notable cases. CorporateM (Talk) 17:35, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Orangemike- you stated the violation as: "Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia, as you did to The Martin County Library System. We were creating the page as informational. As many public libraries are doing. References were going to be included such as the library home page, demographics and others to the same standard before it was deleted. There is no way to create a better page because each attempt to link from the county page it simply links back to the county. Ej1128lib Ej1128lib (talk) 20:56, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

First off, you need to change to an acceptable username. Then, you have to fully disclose your conflict of interest. Last but not least, I very very very VERY strongly advise you to make other edits here, to establish your legitimate presence here, before suggesting that somebody else, somebody other than yourself or anybody else at Marco, create an article about this company. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:43, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

By advising me to make other edits here, does that mean to practice editing around before I create mine? Thank you. Marco Technology (talk) 21:53, 13 October 2014 (UTC)Marco Technology

By doing legitimate edits, edits in which you do not have a conflict of interest, you establish that you are not one of those people obviously not here to build an encyclopedia. This will strengthen the legitimacy of your appeal for help in finding somebody else (NOT YOU) to write an article about Marco. But first: get a name change. --Orange Mike | Talk 22:00, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi Mike. Hoping to make a new Marco, Inc. article with the unambiguous advertising tone removed. The promotional content would be removed and it would be a completely neutral point of view article, just simply stating facts. Wondering what your thoughts were or any advice you suggest? Thanks. We do not absolutely forbid the creation of an article by somebody with a disclosed conflict of interest, such as yourself; but we do very strongly discourage it. If this company is legitimately notable, then suggest the creation of such an article at our Articles for Creation page, fully disclosing your COI as you do so. Profer your neutral information from vefiable reliable sources to be used in such an article. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:57, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Warning about Promotion regarding PZAB

Hi, a page I was creating (PZAB) was flagged by an ASCII art filter recently, and I have received a message from you containing a warning/information about self-promotion.
Just to clarify: I'm not trying in any way to self-promote, if what I wrote came across in that way please tell me what I could to to correct it. The article itself was written in an entirely informative manner; I am not making (or trying to make) any money from anything mentioned within my article.
I did link to a wiki page on another site. If that's not appropriate, please let me know.
Thanks for your message. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrDetonia (talkcontribs) 23:08, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

You admit it's about a language you wrote youself, so you've got a blatant conflict of interest. You provided no substantive evidence that it is in any way notable enough to appear in an encyclopedia. Instead of reliable sources, you "sourced" the article to an entry in a wiki, which is pretty much the definition of an unreliable source. If this language is genuinely notable, somebody without your COI will write a neutral, properly-sourced article about it. In the meantime, forgive us if we have trouble distinguishing you writing about this programming language you created from mere self-promotion of something you made up in class one day. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:33, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Dear Sir,

I have received this message,

Please do not write or add to an article about yourself. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged – see our guideline on writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later (see Wikipedians with articles). If you wish to add to an existing article about yourself, please propose the changes on its talk page. For example, if you wanted to add that he was born in Udaipur, this article in The Times of India could be used to verify that fact. Also, we're allowed to make basic calculations, so based on his age in that article, we should be able to post a year of birth. In the future before adding any information to the page, you need to find a source like this that verifies it and include the source with the content. CorporateM (Talk) 13:13, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Wisconsin Senate, District 19 may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "{}"s. INSPIREDBYDESIGN ACCOUNT

Hello and greetings Orangemike, it looks like the ONLY reason that account was made was to reach out to me personally. Would you PLEASE unblock that account for now, the user has made no contributions to anything other then my talk page and clearly does not understand our syntax. I will personally guide the user into the creation of another account, and try to educate them accordingly, but I can not do it with your block in place. I was reading that the number of contributors is really down compared to a few years ago, perhaps a less heavy handed approach in these cases might change that. Poul Anderson question

Hi -- we've interacted a couple of times, and I know you're knowledgeable about sf. Would you mind taking a look here and giving your opinion? Blanche's suggestion doesn't seem completely out of line to me, but I'm hesitant because this sort of thing leads to everyone mentioning their favourite author. On the other hand there's no question Anderson is notable and the series itself certainly has coverage. But should it be mentioned in the Planet Stories article? Thanks. Alexander M. Alling

Hi-I am trying to find information about Alexander M. Alling. I think Alexander M. Alling is only one person who lived in New York and served in the New York Legislature and then settled in Wisconsin and served in the Wisconsin Legislature also. You had a number of New York legislators who moved to Wisconsin and served also in the Wisconsin Legislature or the two Wisconsin Constitutional Conventions. Just a thought-thanks-RFD (talk) 14:55, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Unblocks?

Recently, you blocked user:Taylorintime for 'spamusername', because he had posted an article about motivational speaker Harold Taylor. Taylorintime is actually a relative of Harold Taylor, thus the username, and would like to know how to do things properly. (For instance, the elder Taylor genuinely was a bestselling author in the early 80s.) Are you okay with my unblocking him so that he can learn how to do this right? DS (talk) 17:41, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

1. That name would still be unacceptable because it's the name of the Taylor business website.
2. This still absolutely reeks of COI. If they are just a relative, why are they using the name of Taylor's still-extant consulting practice?
Bluntly, I am inclined to say "No"; but I will not feud with you if you AGF, as long as you subsequently watch them for mischief. --Orange Mike | Talk 22:14, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Treasure Mammal deletion

Hi there. I noticed you deleted a page for Treasure Mammal back in 2008 on notability issues, which made sense at the time. In six years, the band has gained a lot of notability, which would be easy to cite, especially given their recent collaboration with The Flaming Lips on With a Little Help from My Fwends (see track 11). I was just wondering if you disagreed before I started making something that would end up being deleted again. Thanks Orangemike! Oneultralamewhiteboy (talk) 00:28, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Read and follow WP:BAND. Remember, also, that notability is not contagious; a band doesn't become notable by collaborating with or opening for or sharing a member with a band which is notable. The band must be of note as themselves. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:44, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Pleasant Valley, Grant County, Wisconsin/British Hollow, Wisconsin

Hi Mike-I look at the GNIS: 1562221 for British Hollow, Wisconsin in Grant County, Wisconsin and the alternative name for British Hollow, Wisconsin was: Pleasant Valley. This is something to look into. My best wishes to your wife, yourself, and your family-Many thanks-RFD (talk) 16:37, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Yup. I've found one history of Grant County which discusses the place under both names. I figure the main reason to use the Pleasant Valley name is that that is the name used in the original state constitution for the place. (Grant County [and some others] apparently did not have formal towns yet, so the 1848 constitution speaks instead of "precincts" of those counties.) --Orange Mike | Talk 18:40, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
I have lots of family/family history in Grant and drive through it regularly if you need something confirmed on paper. Gaijin42 (talk) 18:44, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
I've discovered that Hurricane, Wisconsin enjoyed a brief post-Civil War boom as a settling place for freedmen! It would be nice if some of that could go into the article. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:49, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Just look who started it (Bookandcoffee (talk | contribs) and then look at how an anonymous editor with the user name of Gideone (talk | contribs) did all the copy and paste from the IFALPA website, in violation of Wiki copywrite and plagiarism rules. Corruption on kickboxing, help

Hello, PRehse, Mdtemp and Papaursa are again destroying the Wikipedia kickboxing (I bet these 3 are also linked). There are no kickboxing records on the internet, all the people are informing from the Wikipedia site. Look what are they doing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Raul_C%C4%83tina%C8%99. The article is well written. Then the people had a discussion regarding this promotion which is currently the second in the world: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Martial_arts/Kickboxing_task_force#SUPERKOMBAT_Fighting_Championship. These users are simply ignoring the users based on their personal opinion and hate (SuperKombat should be added on the list, and even if a kickboxer is good to be allowed to be on Wikipedia if he holds first tiers trophies). Basically, PRehse deleted many SuperKombat fighters, now he asked help from his Mdtemp to do it. Before, it was Papaursa who helped him. They kept deleting kickboxers, unbelievable. Can't we have them on Wikipedia if they are notable enough? Remember, these were previously warned to stop deleting K-1 articles, huge events. Dammst (talk) 17:15, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

My ignorance of kickboxing is only exceeded by my indifference to it. I fear I would be a very poor choice to help on this matter. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:44, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello Orangemike. I saw your AFD for Ali Baba films. I did get a chuckle over Weekendmedia adding the advert tag when they started the article. It looks like the other article that W started Sata Lota Pan Sagla Khota might need and AFD as well. My question is - should it be bundled with the AFD you started it should it get a separate one? Oy, what a nightmare; I feel like I need a bath. The first version was actually a series of ads for one or more clubs he owned/managed, written in the slimiest promotional prose imaginable, like that skeezy nightclub review character on Saturday Night Live. The second was an almost equally smarmy advertisement for Kolodny himself written in the kind of slick faux hip press-release insincerity that makes you wonder how these copywriters can live with themselves after committing such crimes against the language. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:59, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

A couple of adverts

Hi Mike. I've just nominated the re-creation of M Capital Group for speedy deletion (previously deleted at Articles for deletion/M Capital Group) and now discover that the same editor has also created an article for its founder and managing partner, Christian Mouchbahani. A cursory check of the references shows the usual PR/passing mention/primary sources combo of non-references, and in a quantity that suggests the typical product of COI and possibly paid editing. Should it go to AfD? Voceditenore (talk) 13:40, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Please comment on SWIMM Article

Mike, I've donated to Wikipedia and I really want to help this band. I know that one page takes bandwidth. Would it really be so bad for locally prominent bands to be in an online encyclopedia? How can the rules be changed? Or do I need to create a Wikia style site if I want to have an encyclopedia for "not famous enough bands"? I need a solution, not more why things can't happen - I hope you can understand - I'm a millenial. GM2587 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gm2587 (talkcontribs)

There are lots of other sites where you can write about what you will: MySpace, Facebook, LiveJournal, etc. One of the standing principles here in Wikipedia is that on a planet of seven billion people, we have to set some minimum standards for notability; WP:BAND sets out those standards for bands. That's not gonna change. See also: "Wikipedia doesn't care about your garage band." --Orange Mike | Talk 18:27, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

Isaac Asimov Presents The Golden Years of Science Fiction

How odd. You recommended that Isaac Asimov Presents The Golden Years of Science Fiction, Fifth Series should be deleted (and it has been - missed it by that much!) yet Series 1-4 & 6 seem untouched... Perhaps it would be better if all six volumes and all 25 books of Isaac Asimov Presents The Great SF Stories were merged into one article? I would be in favour of increasing the quality of these articles rather than deleting them. I personally find low-interest/non-notable (however you want to word them) articles very useful as Wikipedia articles are generally edited by multiple people with the average overall effect of increasing the quality, whereas, single author articles on random webpages elsewhere are usually much lower quality with no way for the reader to affect the content. question , maybe advice ?

Hi Orangemike- I came across you only an hour ago and feel there's a kindred spirit. I've edited Aerotoxic syndrome in October, a problematic article, owned by EditorASC, whom you crossed path with I saw on ANI/NPOV re International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations in November. I dont know if you continued reading his response after you recused yourself. A very long tirade.

After seeing that today, I feel hopeless of lasting through an NPOV dispute that I declared with same EditorASC on Aerotoxic syndrome. Mr Boser appears to be a lonely person, with an unusual focus on just that page, and a declared POV. He has been hostile and non-cooperative. Though there were at least 2 supporters of change on the talkpage, as you can guess, nobody wants to stick their neck out. what to do? Editor ASC is threatening to take the flag off...

I may have dispute fatigue from another site I actively edit, Bitcoin, after we lost our second dispute with a similar kind of character; Today, I lost a 3rr filing for essentially unclear reasons.

Leaving WP sites because of people who own them? - and just then I read about the editor retention project on your user page - how awesome of you. I am quite impressed with your persona.

Hope you can help somehow, please advise, help me from dropping out..--Wuerzele (talk) 07:44, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

The story these two (APK & BMK) are spinning is not a correct version of what's taking place. These guys are ganging up on my for something that took place in November. The story that is on the admin board is not a accurate description of what is going on. Yes between Commons and these editors it has been non stop for about a week, and after my cat of 20 years had to be put down today, I was in no frame of mind to take on 3 editors that I could not even get in a word with as the three were working so fast that the chance of me getting a word in edgewise was nill. I could care less about lead images, but when a image is useful, I notate on talk pages that its going to be inserted, no one objects that the battery crew BMK APK and a few others just summarily remove it, in a vendetta. Yes the combined effects of putting down my pet, having 24 request in under a hour to remove photos I took and then this stuff, its all overwhelming. I have never said I am retiring. I said I am taking a break. That is what I would like to do, regardless of these two abrasive editors objectives. talk→ WPPilot  05:48, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mike.

Would you mind having a look at an emerging discussion over on this talk page? Without malice I'm sure, but the other party has essentially accused an editor and uploader of an image of being a paedophile. As I don't think the editor fully realises the seriousness of such an accusation I don't want to charge into ANI with it, so thought I'd ask you for an opinion first.

Thanks. Chaheel Riens (talk) 10:35, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mike. Thanks for the action - I should have been clearer; the same rationale (and comment) is also made on this page: Talk:School uniforms in England.
Chaheel Riens (talk) 19:29, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Wrong - the accusation was at the people who drive past the school almost every week and take photos of the girls waiting to go home - but I guess that is the beauty of the modern internet. The comments about the legal and moral aspects about taking and publishing photos of children without informed consent have also been deleted, I guess as they are inconvenient. Kingmoose8 (talk) 23:00, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

You made specific accusations of a grave and serious nature about people you do not know, without any basis but your own assumptions. You cannot use this encyclopedia as a soapbox on which to stand while flinging charges around without evidence, far less proof. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:04, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

I work at the school photographed, I know the girls photographed personally, and I am regularly called to deal with people coming on site, sadly this includes people driving through the school and being seen to photograph the girls when they wait to catch their bus home. I suggested on the talk page of the two entries for that particular photograph not to be used due to the questionable providence of its 'photographer'. I outlined both the legal issues with the publication of that particular image under UK and EU law, as well as the moral and ethical arguments with referenced to published academic articles relating to the use and publication of images of children. You have chosen to delete all of that argument rather than address the issues I have raised for reasons that I still do not understand.

I would still like that particular image not to be used as it was taken without permission on private land and has been taken and published without the consent of the owners of the land, or the informed consent of the children pictured. I dare not now write that on the two pages for fear or further censure. I apologise about the terminology I originally used, but I suppose working in a school with 600 teenage girls and being concerned about their safety in both reality and on-line has forced me to have developed a certain opinion about unknown persons entering our site without permission to photograph young children, but I am sure that it is perfectly normal behaviour and should be welcomed. I haven't yet informed the families of the girls pictured as I was rather hoping that the image would be replaced before potentially upsetting them. Kingmoose8 (talk) 19:22, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Discuss the ethical issues you believe are involved on the relevant talk pages 1) without bringing in irrelevancies such as UK or EU laws that you believe might be involved, since Wikipedia is not subject to those laws (see also WP:NLT) and such talk can create a chilling effect; and 2) without making slurs against the photographers involved. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:47, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

Requires Only That You Hate

Could you take a look at your leisure at Benjanun_Sriduangkaew, who -- as you doubtless know -- was also Winterfox and Requires Only That You Hate.

This raises interesting Wikipedia issues. For example, the ultimate source for Benjanun_Sriduangkaew's alternate identities are a pair of confessions published on her weblogs. These have been widely discussed and are apparently genuine. There has been coverage in Ansible, but editors of that page refused to consider Ansible a reliable source. It's not been covered at Locus as far as I know. It would be bad for Wikipedia to ignore what seems likely to be one of the major stories in the SFF community of the year and perhaps the era, but it needs expert hands and tact. A second opinion

Mike, back in december you blocked user:Phillipstyles for spam username. The user has since identified herself as a fan/friend of Mr Bloch (described in Phillipstyles' draft), who wants to do it right; based on the content of the draft you deleted, I think you overreacted. Would you be okay with my restoring the draft and unblocking the user? (Perhaps a namechange might be recommended as well) DS (talk) 16:47, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

The draft that was deleted was a pathetic piece of promotional trash, smarmy and full of braggartry. Because there was nothing in that draft which indicated that she was capable of writing with WP:NPOV. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:59, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

To Orangemike, My revisions of today to the Wiki page about the American Boychoir are accurate and far less biased than the information provided by the main author of the Wiki entry. I don't know how to write to you directly, but please let me know about this at <jamie.watson@ww-p.org>

The misleading, fictional narrative in the section about Allegations of Sexual Abuse at ABS are far more slanderous and misleading than anything I added today. I'm not exaggerating in telling you that these persons are out to close ABS, not fix the problem, which the School has already done.

Yah, it was written by a fan, but I just wanted to see if it had any good sources (looks like it doesn't). I have some JPEGs of woodworking magazines from them that have some good content about him, but I don't think it's quite enough to meet the notability bar. Stephen Fry

I removed Category:Books by Stephen Fry from his novels because Category:Novels by Stephen Fry is already a subcategory of the books category, so including it seemed redundant. There was *some* logic behind the edits. :) Trivialist (talk) 11:44, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

It's bad enough, albeit a cliche, when a preacher's son goes bad. But when a preacher's son devotes himself to doing evil, while wrapping himself in a cloak of false piety, it brings out the Baptist-raised preacher in me. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:04, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Check my talk page. I'm the person who added firefighters to the article in the first place--earlier today, for evidently the first time in the article's history--so no, I don't need you to introduce me to any. Safehaven86 (talk) 05:04, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Uncontroversial move request

Say, Mike, any chance I can con you into moving John Hickman (congressman) to John Hickman (politician)? That would be the typical WP naming form. The current name is particularly annoying because if it is spelled correctly as John Hickman (Congressman), the result is a red link. Question about Good Article process

Hi OrangeMike,

Sometime ago (2008), I created a page about John L. Spivak the author. A lot of editors have put in work over the years, and I think it's getting good(ish). Any advice about how to improve it to GA status? I have never been involved in the process. I know your busy, but thanks in advance for any thoughts. Capitalismojo (talk) 03:31, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

I've never gotten caught up in the GA thing; don't even know whether any articles I've started have ever gotten that far. Sorry. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:00, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
@Capitalismojo: I have done about 30 GAs, some on BLPs, and reviewed a few as well. If you'd like me to take a look, let me know. CorporateM (Talk) 02:07, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks OrangeMike. No worries. Capitalismojo (talk) 02:52, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Any interest in participating in the ongoing discussion on this BLP page? I have a disclosed COI and the other editor is an SPA with editing habits that suggest a non-disclosed COI. Needs at least one actual volunteer to watchlist and hammer out a few things where myself and the other paid editor seem to disagree. I suppose you're probably rolling your eyes (perhaps rightfully so, I'm not really sure), that the article has attracted two paid editors and zero volunteers. CorporateM (Talk) 03:55, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Aw, jeez, this one just is not pushing my buttons at all. I'd suggest trying at WP:COIN. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:29, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
Haha - yah the COIN post was recently archived without discussion. I suppose if I were in another editor's shoes I would have a similar response along the lines of "pff I don't want to deal with this". Meanwhile it's frustrating from my shoes that well-sourced information is getting removed and unsourced or promotional content added by an editor not complying with the terms of use. CorporateM (Talk) 04:03, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Referral request

Hey, while we're chatting, a while back you said something about me being a model to follow for paid editing - a pretty rare compliment coming from someone that generally dislikes the practice. Do you know of anyone else worthy of similar praise? I have a situation where I cannot take on a client, because I have already edited their article as a volunteer and do not want to create the appearance of abusing my volunteer role. I think they mean well and want to refer them to a paid editor I can trust. @Cullen328: said they know of no one else and @DGG: said he was uncomfortable recommending someone. I tried a Wikipedian that asked me about a job years ago, but no response. I know there's lots of folks that follow the Bright Line, but generally what I've seen from them was not very neutral, involved unfair business practices, or bullying and POV railroading. Lots of volunteers might jump at the chance, but even members of the community (especially those willing to take on a gig), don't "get it", wouldn't act professionally, and make even worse edits when paid than those with experience getting paid for it.

Just trying to find a way to help them that doesn't involve me accepting any money from them, or spending dozens of hours on an article I don't have an interest in. Is there another sponsored editor you feel is trustworthy? CorporateM (Talk) 15:57, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Possible Block Evasion

Just wondering how long the ban which you placed on User:True_Observer was. He seems to be editing from an IP, and when a bot automatically signs his posts, he proceeds to delete the information. It just raised a huge red flag of a possible attempt to evade a block. So I thought I'd give you a heads up, in case the block period hadn't lapsed. Quinto Simmaco (talk) 03:48, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
