To all: Please note. I received the sad news that JohnCD has died suddenly from a heart attack. You can see the message from his son on my talk page. I hope that no one will be disturbed by my placing this news on his talk page for information. Donner60 (talk) 04:58, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
JohnCD you were the best. To me, you were a model role Wikipedian almost from the beginning of my participation here, and I can't believe it's almost nine years ago. I learned so much by watching your always professional and competent attitude and manners. This is a very very sad morning. R.I.P. John. It was a honor to work with you. --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 06:39, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm so sad to hear of your death, John. Thanks for everything you've done, including protecting my user page (that was the first time we ran into each other). You will be greatly missed on Wikipedia. My condolences go to John's family at this awful time. RIP John. I have changed my signature colour as a mark of respect. Class455 (talk|Stand clear of the doors!) 09:52, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know you personally, but always saw you in the recent change fighting vandalism and granting page protection. Thanks for all your dedication into this online encyclopaedia especially when you sacrificing most of your precious life time in here. I'm really sorry to hear this news. My sincere condolences to all your family members, relatives and friends. :'( Molecule Extraction (talk) 10:12, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
My deepest condolences to John's family and friends. I didn't interact with John alot, but I always seemed to notice him helping others whenever possible on various noticeboards, etc. The project will indeed miss him. -- Marchjuly (talk) 7:37 pm, Yesterday (UTC+9)

You can see on the administrator noticeboard that I have been justly criticized and chastised for probably being taken in by a fake death news vandal as User:Someguy1221 has been unable to verify that the name attached to the message is in fact JohnCD. If you wish to read these criticism and my explanation but mainly apology, please feel free to do so. While I am embarrassed and sincerely apologize for my lack of care, vigilance and sensitivity, I will be most pleased if in fact JohnCD is alive and well. The draft referred to above has been deleted by an administrator as unverified, as well. I hope it is not inappropriate to notify you here so that I get all the posters copied and, hopefully, to let JohnCD know about these notifications. Donner60 (talk) 12:32, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks all. Even my mother can appreciate the irony of this situation. My father's funeral is being arranged by Joseph Edwards and Sons, Funeral Directors, of 144 Crewe Road, Alsager, ST7 2JA, UK. Their telephone number (in the UK) is 01270 882097. I can't think how else I can help you with verification but I have given my email address and we are still using John's. I hope you'll understand the skepticism, if you read John's user page you'll know he'd appreciate it. I note that I've blocked User:JohnCD (test), John's verified alternate account which was editing recently, without prejudice. -- zzuuzz(talk)14:20, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Your messages are much appreciated, thank you all sincerely for your words. John devoted a great deal of time to Wikipedia and it gives us comfort to learn that online, as in life, his intelligence, civility, patience and good humour were appreciated. - John's family
John would be laughing his socks off at the {{citation needed}} we chiselled on to his epitaph :D Condolences to the family. Keri (talk) 14:45, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
My condolences, and I'm sorry that there was a bit of a hoo-hah about whether this report was genuine. That's the last thing you needed to be dealing with at this time. Rest assured though that John will be missed around here. Cordless Larry (talk) 15:18, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Condolences to everyone in his family. John was indeed a great editor and administrator. And I appreciate your bearing with us while we sorted out the situation. I agree that he would have appreciated the comments you made in the Draft page. DMacks (talk) 16:55, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
While I don't think JohnCD and I ever interacted, his name has for ages been known to me and the encyclopedia is dimished with the loss of such a valuable, long-term contributor. Acalamari17:00, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Me & John never really interacted however you saw his name everywhere because he was always helping anyone and everyone, He was an amazing editor and & an amazing admin and He will be greatly missed by everyone, My condolences to friends & family at this very sad time, RIP John xx. –Davey2010Talk17:36, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I can't quite remember where John and I interacted (I want to say images on an FA somewhere) but what I do remember was his friendliness and willingness to help. Regrettably, we never came across one another after that but he certainly left a good impression on me. Condolences to his family at this difficult time and apologies for any offence inadvertently caused by my cautiousness. CassiantoTalk17:48, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In the light of Wbm1058's comment I have something to confess that may amuse John's fellow admins. I myself introduced my father to Wikipedia ten or so years ago, with the idea of him doing the complete opposite of what you know him for. He had been retired for some time and I suggested one day that if he needed an intellectual challenge he and my mother could try to invent something completely out of thin air, a new musical genre or something, and insert it into Wikipedia. Even then it was clear that simply adding a page to the site wouldn't work: the exercise would be to create enough spurious material online in other places to allow the creation of plausible references, so as to give it the air of authenticity here. He started looking into Wikipedia with interest... Little did I know I had given a new direction to the remaining years of his life, doing the precise opposite of my suggestion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RHCD (talk • contribs)
I, on more than one occasion, had the pleasure of working with John on helping cleaning up vandalism here. He always was polite and courteous, and I thought he added so much to the project. It's said that the best way to measure the worth of a person is to hear what is said when they are gone. To his family, reading this page in your hour of utmost sorrow, I hope these words from fellow contributors just shows how much he was respected here, and give you a small measure of comfort. My deepest condolences to all of you, and to his friends off-Wikipedia. RickinBaltimore (talk) 00:44, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't interacted with John on Wikipedia, but I have seen him around and my impressions of him were nothing but positive. My condolences, this is not how a new year should start.—CYBERPOWER(Chat)01:26, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have expressed my condolences elsewhere and directly but I think it appropriate to add them again here since they are not properly expressed in my original posting here. John's diligence, patience and civility will be remembered in addition to his substantive contributions. Donner60 (talk) 07:39, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
God, that's terrible. I saw John around all the time; I think every now and then he would delete pages I tagged for CSD... terrible news indeed. Rest in peace sir. You'll be missed. Patient Zerotalk11:37, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think John and I ever interacted, but I'd always see his name around Wikipedia and I know he will be missed. My thoughts are with his family and friends. – JuneGloom07Talk17:01, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It has been my pleasure to discuss with JohnCD on various pages on Wikipedia. Thank you for all the good work you've given to us in your life! Deryck C.18:00, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have been happy to know JohnCD and to get help on various topics. Thanks and love for all the good words. I hope his family can take comfort in the knowledge that he was respected, admired and will be missed. ☕ Antiqueighthaver21:37, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Very sad news indeed, my condolences to your family. I interacted with JohnCD rarely but saw him around often, I always thought of him as one of our most respected editors, and that is evidenced by his almost-unanimous request for adminship a little more than 7 years ago. He will be missed here, and I hope his family finds peace in this sad time. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 13:48, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The deepest of condolences, in the brief, but fruitful time I've interacted with John, I am deeply sadden by the lost of a great contributor who was always here to lend a helping hand. You will be missed! Valoemtalkcontrib13:59, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I had the greatest respect for John, as an editor and as an administrator. I had contact with him a number of times over the years, and always had positive experiences of him on those occasions. I am sincerely very much saddened by the news of his death. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 16:13, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I feel like mentioning one very trivial fact. John was, so far as I know, the only administrator other than me who has ever used {{Bio-warn-deletion}}, which I created about five years ago. In fact, he used it far more often than I have done. I have no idea why no other administrator has ever thought it worth using, nor why John had a different view from everyone else, but in a silly way it made me feel as though he and I had a special friendship. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 16:20, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please accept my sympathy. JohnCD and I have interacted on many pages, perhaps most frequently while talking about notability (the standards for whether a subject should have a separate article) and various tools, such as Special:Thanks. I will miss him. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:26, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if there are any particular articles or works which the family might like seen done as a kind of gesture of respect to John, there might be some people willing to pay him homage in that way. I personally probably do more mainspace work over at wikisource than here right now, so if there are any scanned verifiably in the public domain which he might have liked to seen made available on the internet which could maybe be added to wikisource and done as at least a small gesture of respect for him, I would be more than willing to do what I can in that regard. John Carter (talk) 23:59, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm shocked to hear this. I just can't believe it. JohnCD was one of the good guys. He has done so much to preserve the integrity of our project. He will be greatly missed. My condolences go out to his family in what is surely a very difficult time for them. Kurtis(talk)06:58, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Very belated message, as I've only just found out. JohnCD was one of the fairest-minded admins I've come across, and I too will miss him greatly. Peridon (talk) 17:44, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
John was one of those editors that you would always wander into eventually no matter what part of the Wiki you were busy with yourself; So much in fact that I initially came to this talk page to see why I didn't run into him for some time, and the reason for that couldn't have been more unexpected and unwelcome. One hat-launching hat tip for all your work around the Wiki, and rest in peace no matter where you are now. Excirial(Contact me,Contribs)21:17, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to hear of John's passing. Our paths crossed in the past and I always found him to be an editor commanded one's respect. Mjroots (talk) 13:57, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So sorry to hear about this. JohnCD was a clear-headed editor and admin whose commitment and values I greatly admired, even on the occasions where we disagreed. Guy (Help!) 14:33, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am so sad to hear about this. A couple of years ago John came all the way down to Oxford just to meet me for a day on one of my flying visits to the UK. That's the kind of guy he was. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:41, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Only just seen a reference to John's death. We worked for the same computer company, where our paths crossed on a number of occasions, and later on lived in the same small town, even having children who I believe were in the same year at school. I remember him as one who was always well respected by everyone at meetings, one who had a very clear mind, and was always able to explain things so clearly. I hadn't realised that he was even a Wiki contributor, let alone a well-respected administrator. R.I.P. Drawoh46 (talk) 18:59, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
John was a friend as well as a colleague to me, we worked together many times. I'm very sad that he's gone. I'll really miss him. -- Atama頭20:53, 3 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Only just this evening stumbled upon the news. In reading through discussions, there are certain Wikipedians whose opinions you look for and whose actions you can count on. John was one of those people. Sad to hear about his passing. Killiondude (talk) 05:30, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Terribly sad to hear this news. John was one of those people it was always a pleasure to interact with. A huge loss to the Wikipedia community and I'm sure an even greater one to his family and friends. Jenks24 (talk) 07:06, 10 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I emailed the address JohnCD's son left and got a lovely reply from John's wife. She would like to pass on her thanks to the editors here who have spoken about John. It has given her comfort and pride to hear about his work and our impressions of him. She wanted to let every here know of her appreciation of our memories and thoughts. As many of us have lost people we all know how much it can help to hear about a loved one. ☕ Antiqueighthaver22:39, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I came across an edit where you removed a message, that was quite rude, from a new users talk page and replaced it with a kind welcome message with a personal note. I was pleasantly surprised by the kindness with which you addressed the new user, a reminder of the importance of WP:BITEVinegarymass911 (talk) 23:51, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
