Deceased

[edit]

To all: Please note. I received the sad news that JohnCD has died suddenly from a heart attack. You can see the message from his son on my talk page. I hope that no one will be disturbed by my placing this news on his talk page for information. Donner60 (talk) 04:58, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@MarnetteD:, @Anna Frodesiak:, @Vejvančický:, @King of Hearts:, @Marvellous Spider-Man:, @Mkdw:, @Gerda Arend:, @Blakegripling ph:, @Valenciano:, @Class455:, @Valenciano:, @Molecule Extraction:. You can see on the administrator noticeboard that I have been justly criticized and chastised for probably being taken in by a fake death news vandal as User:Someguy1221 has been unable to verify that the name attached to the message is in fact JohnCD. If you wish to read these criticism and my explanation but mainly apology, please feel free to do so. While I am embarrassed and sincerely apologize for my lack of care, vigilance and sensitivity, I will be most pleased if in fact JohnCD is alive and well. The draft referred to above has been deleted by an administrator as unverified, as well. I hope it is not inappropriate to notify you here so that I get all the posters copied and, hopefully, to let JohnCD know about these notifications. Donner60 (talk) 12:32, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Condolences to everyone in his family. John was indeed a great editor and administrator. And I appreciate your bearing with us while we sorted out the situation. I agree that he would have appreciated the comments you made in the Draft page. DMacks (talk) 16:55, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • While I don't think JohnCD and I ever interacted, his name has for ages been known to me and the encyclopedia is dimished with the loss of such a valuable, long-term contributor. Acalamari 17:00, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Me & John never really interacted however you saw his name everywhere because he was always helping anyone and everyone, He was an amazing editor and & an amazing admin and He will be greatly missed by everyone, My condolences to friends & family at this very sad time, RIP John xx. –Davey2010Talk 17:36, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I can't quite remember where John and I interacted (I want to say images on an FA somewhere) but what I do remember was his friendliness and willingness to help. Regrettably, we never came across one another after that but he certainly left a good impression on me. Condolences to his family at this difficult time and apologies for any offence inadvertently caused by my cautiousness. CassiantoTalk 17:48, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I admired JohnCD's work here for a long time. He will be missed very much. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 18:12, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • The family may be interested to know that John ranks as the 264th most active Wikipedian by number of edits – he made a major contribution to one of the world's top-ten websites. I'm not old enough to remember mercury delay lines (I learned to program on the Programma 101 and IBM 1620), but I'll carry on in his memory, working to preserve the history of computing. Condolences, wbm1058 (talk) 18:59, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rest in peace, John.--MarshalN20 🕊 22:51, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • In the light of Wbm1058's comment I have something to confess that may amuse John's fellow admins. I myself introduced my father to Wikipedia ten or so years ago, with the idea of him doing the complete opposite of what you know him for. He had been retired for some time and I suggested one day that if he needed an intellectual challenge he and my mother could try to invent something completely out of thin air, a new musical genre or something, and insert it into Wikipedia. Even then it was clear that simply adding a page to the site wouldn't work: the exercise would be to create enough spurious material online in other places to allow the creation of plausible references, so as to give it the air of authenticity here. He started looking into Wikipedia with interest... Little did I know I had given a new direction to the remaining years of his life, doing the precise opposite of my suggestion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RHCD (talkcontribs)
  • I, on more than one occasion, had the pleasure of working with John on helping cleaning up vandalism here. He always was polite and courteous, and I thought he added so much to the project. It's said that the best way to measure the worth of a person is to hear what is said when they are gone. To his family, reading this page in your hour of utmost sorrow, I hope these words from fellow contributors just shows how much he was respected here, and give you a small measure of comfort. My deepest condolences to all of you, and to his friends off-Wikipedia. RickinBaltimore (talk) 00:44, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is very sad news. John will be greatly missed. SarahSV (talk) 01:16, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I haven't interacted with John on Wikipedia, but I have seen him around and my impressions of him were nothing but positive. My condolences, this is not how a new year should start.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 01:26, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have expressed my condolences elsewhere and directly but I think it appropriate to add them again here since they are not properly expressed in my original posting here. John's diligence, patience and civility will be remembered in addition to his substantive contributions. Donner60 (talk) 07:39, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • God, that's terrible. I saw John around all the time; I think every now and then he would delete pages I tagged for CSD... terrible news indeed. Rest in peace sir. You'll be missed. Patient Zerotalk 11:37, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't think John and I ever interacted, but I'd always see his name around Wikipedia and I know he will be missed. My thoughts are with his family and friends. – JuneGloom07 Talk 17:01, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Very sad news indeed, my condolences to your family. I interacted with JohnCD rarely but saw him around often, I always thought of him as one of our most respected editors, and that is evidenced by his almost-unanimous request for adminship a little more than 7 years ago. He will be missed here, and I hope his family finds peace in this sad time. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 13:48, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sad news and John will be greatly missed. As an enduring WP memoriam, is an entry here appropriate [1] at some point? Leaky Caldron 14:48, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I had the greatest respect for John, as an editor and as an administrator. I had contact with him a number of times over the years, and always had positive experiences of him on those occasions. I am sincerely very much saddened by the news of his death. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 16:13, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I feel like mentioning one very trivial fact. John was, so far as I know, the only administrator other than me who has ever used {{Bio-warn-deletion}}, which I created about five years ago. In fact, he used it far more often than I have done. I have no idea why no other administrator has ever thought it worth using, nor why John had a different view from everyone else, but in a silly way it made me feel as though he and I had a special friendship. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 16:20, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know if there are any particular articles or works which the family might like seen done as a kind of gesture of respect to John, there might be some people willing to pay him homage in that way. I personally probably do more mainspace work over at wikisource than here right now, so if there are any scanned verifiably in the public domain which he might have liked to seen made available on the internet which could maybe be added to wikisource and done as at least a small gesture of respect for him, I would be more than willing to do what I can in that regard. John Carter (talk) 23:59, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

I emailed the address JohnCD's son left and got a lovely reply from John's wife. She would like to pass on her thanks to the editors here who have spoken about John. It has given her comfort and pride to hear about his work and our impressions of him. She wanted to let every here know of her appreciation of our memories and thoughts. As many of us have lost people we all know how much it can help to hear about a loved one. ☕ Antiqueight haver 22:39, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Barnstar of Diplomacy
I came across an edit where you removed a message, that was quite rude, from a new users talk page and replaced it with a kind welcome message with a personal note. I was pleasantly surprised by the kindness with which you addressed the new user, a reminder of the importance of WP:BITE Vinegarymass911 (talk) 23:51, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
