Administrators' newsletter – October 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2022).
- Following an RfC, consensus was found that if the rationale for a block depends on information that is not available to all administrators, that information should be sent to the Arbitration Committee, a checkuser or an oversighter for action (as applicable, per ArbCom's recent updated guidance) instead of the administrator making the block.
- Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.
- Community comment on the revised Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines is requested until 8 October.
- The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. If you wish to help out at AFC, enable AFCH by navigating to Preferences → Gadgets and checking the "Yet Another AfC Helper Script" box.
- Remedy 8.1 of the Muhammad images case will be rescinded 1 November following a motion.
- A modification to the deletion RfC remedy in the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been made to reaffirm the independence of the RfC and allow the moderators to split the RfC in two.
- The second phase of the 2021-22 Discretionary Sanctions Review closes 3 October.
- An administrator's account was recently compromised. Administrators are encouraged to check that their passwords are secure, and reminded that ArbCom reserves the right to not restore adminship in cases of poor account security. You can also use two-factor authentication (2FA) to provide an extra level of security.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections open 2 October and close 8 October.
- You are invited to comment on candidates in the 2022 CUOS appointments process.
- An RfC is open to discuss whether to make Vector 2022 the default skin on desktop.
- Tech tip: You can do a fuzzy search of all deleted page titles at Special:Undelete.

... for your help with the images and the review of Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen, BWV 56! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:15, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
- Congratulations on getting it on the Main Page! I haven't had much time to write recently (too busy in my real life job) but I hope to be back at DYK and GAN soon. I have my childhood hero at FAC, which is keeping me busy enough at the moment. Happy editing, —Kusma (talk) 16:03, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

Abdullah Bin Rashid Al Khalifa page deletion?
Hello, you recently deleted the page for the current Bahrain Ambassador to the U.S. Is it because he has a similar name to another person? NYMediaGuy (talk) 14:46, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
- No. @NYMediaGuy, you can see the reason in the deletion log. The page deletion had nothing to do with who the person is. I deleted the page because it was too close to a copy / paraphrase of a copyright protected page, so the content was a copyright violation and could not be used on Wikipedia, where content needs to be under a Creative Commons license. —Kusma (talk) 22:37, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

- Eligible editors are invited to self-nominate themselves from 13 November 2022 until 22 November 2022 to stand in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections.
- The arbitration case request titled Athaenara has been resolved by motion.

{{rangeblock|create=yes}}
or{{uw-ublock|contains profanity}}
.
Can I prevail on you for help?
I am looking for a journal article, which seems like it would be German, but I don't know the name of it in German. The article was written by Varia Kipiani, probably in 1905 or 1906. This newspaper article reported in 1907 that Kipiani's article appeared in the Walbaum Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie. World cat shows only "L'ergographie du sucre" (1905) but the description here and here of that French article seems to be a discussion of the sugar crash, and not a comparison of cane sugar and fructose. After your detective work on Foote, I wondered if you might be able to assist me in finding this. If you are too busy, or uninterested, no worries. SusunW (talk) 22:20, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- @SusunW, I am pretty busy but I really like doing this kind of research, so I went right ahead. The title is "Der Kraftwert des Zuckers", and Google makes it look likely that it is on page 674 of Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie, Volume 30, Part 1 (1906). Searching through German library catalogues makes me think this volume hasn't been digitised yet, so you probably need to ask at WP:RX if you want a copy (it is reasonably widely available, for example in the Bavarian State library in Munich: [1]). If you manage to get hold of it and need help reading/translating, just let me know. (I haven't yet managed to figure out what "Walbaum" is in this context, but it is easier to find without that bit). —Kusma (talk) 23:01, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- Nope, I'm wrong. I think the thing in Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie is also only a review/short form, and not written by Kipiani (but that may be helpful as a somewhat secondary source). Looking at this Google snippet, the original seems to have appeared (probably under its French title?? in "Ann . de la soc . roy . des sciences méd . et nat . de Bruxelles Bd . XIV . Hft . 1.", so Annales de la société royale des sciences médicales et naturelles de Bruxelles, vol. 14, issue 1. Let me know if you get anywhere with this information, I'm curious to hear more. —Kusma (talk) 23:24, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much, I really appreciate the help. Let me see if there is any avenue for me to obtain. Probably RE, unless I can find anything at archive.org or Hathitrust or figure out the Belgian archives, which so far have eluded me. I am happy to know that you enjoy the hunt, it's my favorite part too. I'm sure I'll be back asking questions as my knowledge of German is that I can count to 100. If I find something, I'm happy to let you know. SusunW (talk) 13:55, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, well that was too easy. The google link says snippet view, but it isn't. If you click on it, it is full access. What I would normally do at this point it type out the page and run it through multiple translation machines, but if you are willing, I would appreciate your help in translating it. WikiCup 2022 November newsletter
The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is
- Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
- Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
- BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
- Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
- Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
- Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
- PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
- Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.
During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.
- Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
- Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
- Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
- Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
- Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
- SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
- Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
- Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
- Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
- Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.
Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! Taiwanese Mandarin GA Review
First, hi! I wanted to say thanks so much for taking on the article, it's been a pet project of mine for a while. I was very happy to see the review got taken up so quickly, especially by someone with background knowledge. I don't want to drop off the radar — I'm going to try to implement fixes you point out this month. I think I mentioned on the page that I sort of got hit with a bunch of real world life stuff (in a good way!), which I wasn't anticipating when I submitted the review. Just wanted to let you know, and again, thanks so much :) WhinyTheYounger (WtY)(talk, contribs) 19:25, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- @WhinyTheYounger, no need to rush, it is fine if it takes another week or two. I am currently also unable to put in as much wikitime as I'd like, although I hope it will get better next week. (This is why I haven't taken on the task of diving more properly into your impressive selection of sources yet!) —Kusma (talk) 21:41, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
- Well, it's taking a bit longer than anticipated. Just wanted to say a) I'm still alive and b) thanks for your patience and thoughtful feedback so far. This will hopefully be my first ever GA, and it was quite the behemoth, as you can probably tell (and still I feel like I only covered a fraction of what I wanted, haha) WhinyTheYounger (WtY)(talk, contribs) 03:21, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- @WhinyTheYounger, no worries. It is a tough topic for a first GA, and I know it can be hard to find time to really concentrate on this type of work. I would appreciate it if we could wrap this up before I have forgotten everything I thought during the review, though, so please don't leave it until next year to come back to this. —Kusma (talk) 09:17, 9 December 2022 (UTC)

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. - Consensus has been found in an RfC to automatically place RfAs on hold after one week.
- The article creation at scale RfC has been closed.
- An RfC on the banners for the December 2022 fundraising campaign has been closed.
- A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. - Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 12, 2022 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.
- The proposed decision for the 2021-22 review of the discretionary sanctions system is open.
- The arbitration case Reversal and reinstatement of Athaenara's block has been closed.
- The arbitration case Stephen has been opened and the proposed decision is expected 1 December 2022.
- A motion has modified the procedures for contacting an admin facing Level 2 desysop.
- Tech tip: A single IPv6 connection usually has access to a "subnet" of 18 quintillion IPs. Add

Signature Filing Deletion
Greetings: We have permission to use the copyright of smobserved.com. New link for that article: https://www.smobserved.com/story/2023/01/13/news/signature-filing-offers-online-filing-service-to-california-customers/7363.html Also, competitors such as Legal Zoom and Biz File Inc have existing wikipedia pages, so it seems fair for www.SignatureFiling.com to also have a page. DLEWIS527 (talk) 03:00, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- This is about Draft:Signature Filing, which was deleted as advertising in addition to the copyright concerns. If you want to submit a new article that is not advertising, make sure you observe WP:COI. Decisions whether an article about a company should be included in Wikipedia are not based on similarity between companies, but on coverage in reliable sources. —Kusma (talk) 07:12, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
Hello,
Can we please restore this page. I am one of the earliest contributors to Wiki. I was surprised that the page was deleted and no reason was given for its deletion.
This history is authentic as there are many references that give details of its rule and accomplishments.

Pretty sure that this is not the case. Consult their block-log. Bishonen, fyi. TrangaBellam (talk) 19:55, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
- @TrangaBellam, it was the AGF option. If this fits with earlier behaviour (which there was no time to thoroughly research), the indefinite block is also the correct first response. —Kusma (talk) 20:18, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

- Just use User:Þjarkur/NeverUseMobileVersion.js and you never see mobile diffs :) If the user is known to have episodes of disruptiveness, we'll need to keep them blocked at least until the episode is over (but every nine months or so is a bit often for episodic disruption). WikiCup 2023 March newsletter
So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
- Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
- Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
- FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
- TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
- Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.
The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, Trainsandotherthings, Lee Vilenski, Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, SounderBruce, Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.
These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! World War II and the history of Jews in Poland: Arbitration case opened
Hello Kusma,
You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/World War II and the history of Jews in Poland. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/World War II and the history of Jews in Poland/Evidence. Please add your evidence by April 04, 2023, which is when the first evidence phase closes. Submitted evidence will be summarized by Arbitrators and Clerks at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/World War II and the history of Jews in Poland/Evidence/Summary. Owing to the summary style, editors are encouraged to submit evidence in small chunks sooner rather than more complete evidence later.
Details about the summary page, the two phases of evidence, a timeline and other answers to frequently asked questions can be found at the case's FAQ page.
For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration.

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter
The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:
- Iazyges (1040) with three FAs on Byzantine emperors, and lots of bonus points.
- Unlimitedlead (847), with three FAs on ancient history, one GA and nine reviews.
- Epicgenius (636), a WikiCup veteran, with one FA on the New Amsterdam Theatre, four GAs and eleven DYKs
- BennyOnTheLoose (553), a seasoned competitor, with one FA on snooker, six GAs and seven reviews.
- FrB.TG (525), with one FA, a Lady Gaga song and a mass of bonus points.
Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, PCN02WPS, and AirshipJungleman29.
So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Charles III
Kusma, see this. The reviewer passed it. Tim O'Doherty (talk) 16:19, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Why?
My user page was not a hate crime or an attack against someone, and it was indeed actually me who i was talking about, so why would it get deleted? ZestyMonkey2962 (talk) 17:30, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

Charles III sources
Sorry for being abrupt before, Kusma, that wasn't my intention, and I apologise. Looking at the sources on Charles III more closely, I can't seem to find the reference from Metro; perhaps you could tell me where it is. I found the one from the IB Times you mentioned (ref 164). Looking at the article, it seems to report on the public's reaction via Twitter. I accept that the IB Times is marked as generally unreliable; however, here they aren't making up a story, and they have the evidence on the article. If you can point me to the Metro ref, I'll gladly replace it. Again, I apologise for saying that you trashed the review, that was wholly unacceptable behaviour on my part.
Best wishes, Tim O'Doherty (talk) 18:29, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Tim O'Doherty: No need to apologise too much, I understand that this is a bit frustrating. The article is in decent shape and certainly deserves a more in-depth GA review. Anyway, the Metro source is Reference 7 in the current version and can probably be deleted without harm. I don't want to review the article, but if I did, I would probably also raise a "broadness" concern: shouldn't we learn a little bit more about his sons? Good luck with getting this to GA level. Happy editing, —Kusma (talk) 19:28, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

- The letter from Therese Forster is actually from her mother Therese Huber, before her second marriage. Of the 14 addressed to Therese Forster, 13 are to the daughter and one to the mother. (Why did everybody have the same names, it is infuriating when studying the 18th century). —Kusma (talk) 08:54, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Hello, I'm Sixkwnp. For discussing the problem of Taiwanese Mandarin article.
There are three reasons why I removed it: Firstly, the neutrality of the wording might be misleading. Secondly, reliable reference links need to be added to the description. Thirdly, as you can see from the content of the Chinese entry, "1913年,教育部讀音統一會議定老國音,標音用注音符號。1932年後,以教育部出版之《國音常用字彙》為標準音,與中華人民共和國於1955年制定的普通話標準有一些差異。1945年臺灣進入戰後時期,當時剛結束日本統治的臺灣人並不熟悉國音;在中華民國政府的國語政策與九年國民義務教育下,國語才逐漸普及" As you can see, the it's more neutral than deleted part. Also, I think that if there is controversial content in the overview section, it should be written as a sub-entry below. Sixkwnp (talk) 13:51, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Sixkwnp, what the Chinese Wikipedia has to say about 中華民國國語 has very little bearing on what the English Wikipedia should say. The content you removed is a summary of what you find in the section Taiwanese_Mandarin#Under_KMT_rule, where it is cited to reliable sources. What do you find non-neutral about it? Do you think more of zh:國語運動 should be included? —Kusma (talk) 14:03, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- Yep, zh:國語運動 is more appopriate and reflecting the historical context also explaining the reasons . Sixkwnp (talk) 14:09, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Sixkwnp, best to explain on Talk:Taiwanese Mandarin what you think should be added/changed. The article is fairly well-developed, and its main author @WhinyTheYounger knows a wide range of sources for it. —Kusma (talk) 14:12, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- Ok thanks for the reply! Appreciate it. Sixkwnp (talk) 14:15, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Plantas
Howdy, Kusma! I saw that you have promoted two GAs on the Plantas; I remember you asked me about them a few months ago, so I hope I have been of some assistance. Congratulations on this impressive feat. Cheers, Unlimitedlead (talk) 01:17, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks! There are two more Plantas I have written about: Elizabeth and Eliza. Your answer was helpful to confirm I had most of the information I need about Frederica, and will be quite useful for the Planta I have not yet written about: Margaret (called "Peggy"). I think I'll leave the Plantas for a moment to work on a few other interesting 18th century people but I guess I'll return to her and her brother Joseph Planta at some point. —Kusma (talk) 06:32, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
Clara Forster in Bôle
Hello Kusma, You have to read the article: Gabrielle Berthoud, Neuchâteloises du siècle de Voltaire et de Rousseau. In: Musée Neuchâtelois, 46 (1959), p. 97-114. See https://doc.rero.ch/record/12458?ln=fr see page 109-110 where is mentioned that Clara Forster stayed in the house of Sarah/Marguerite Wemyss, daughter of David Wemyss. Lord Elcho. He lived in Cottendart and was suiter of Isabelle de Charrière. Boss-well63 (talk) 16:26, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Hinuber
Hi, you were kind enough to help me out with Henry de Hinuber's family and the German sources involved. The article is nearing the end of a GA review now. Hinuber's service in the Hanoverian Army after 1816 is mostly cited to a master's thesis, and I can't find any other source that talks about Hinuber and the Militärcomité/Bundesmilitärkommission. I wondered whether you might be willing to have a quick look to see whether any German sources have touched on either Hinuber or the commission? Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 19:22, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
- Replied at the GA review. —Kusma (talk) 21:23, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'd probably have had to delete most of that section without your assistance. Please do say if there's ever anything I can do to help you out, I've got a lot to repay! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 21:02, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- Glad I could be of help. I certainly will take up your offer in the future (I have a few things related to British voyages of exploration planned and will definitely work on them any decade now). —Kusma (talk) 21:13, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Deletion of Alveus Sanctuary
Hey! I had recently contributed to the Alveus Sanctuary article, but notice that it was deleted overnight. Could you provide some more context on why it was deleted? It looks like the message references copyright infringement of a news article, and the sancutary's website itself? Is that images that were pulled from the website, or is the implication that the wikipedia article itself infringed on those websites (if so, which bits?)? I'd like to get that page live again and fixed up if that's okay. MattIPv4 (talk) 14:13, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- @MattIPv4, unfortunately the article contained material that was directly copied or closely paraphrased from the sources. These sources, for example [2], all have copyright notices that state "all rights reserved" and so are not compatible with Wikipedia's CC-BY-SA license. As such content was present since the first revision after the original redirect to Maya Higa, there was nothing that could be kept without violating the copyrights of the source pages. You are free to write a new article if it does not infringe on copyright. (By the way the article Maya Higa suffers from poor sourcing, Sportskeeda is considered generally unreliable). —Kusma (talk) 14:51, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- Ah okay, thank you! Is there a way to view the content prior to it being deleted for reference when rewriting the article? MattIPv4 (talk) 14:54, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- @MattIPv4: There might be archived versions around somewhere, but we can't spread around copyright infringing content so I won't be able to restore this for you. The sources used (other than the Alveus Sanctuary's own website, which isn't an independent source anyway) were:
- https://dallasexpress.com/lifestyle/texas-sanctuary-raises-money-on-twitch/

- https://www.guidestar.org/profile/86-1772907
- Overall the sourcing wasn't great at demonstrating notability by showing coverage in multiple reliable sources independent from the topic of the article. —Kusma (talk) 15:04, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks -- could the redirect be restored until I have time to rewrite the article itself? MattIPv4 (talk) 15:05, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Kanikka kapur
Why you deleted Kanikka kapur page? Itv0007 (talk) 15:10, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Itv0007: As the deletion log entry says, because the article was previously deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kanika Kapur and there was no substantial improvement over the previous version (in fact, the article deleted in 2020 was substantially better, as it included references). Unreferenced articles about living people are subject to being deleted after seven days in any case. —Kusma (talk) 15:14, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

my story today |
---|
My story today is that 300 years ago, Bach became Thomaskantor, with BWV 75, writing music history. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:18, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt, that is a great anniversary! One of these days I'd like to fix up the Leipzig churches, especially St. Thomas Church, Leipzig, a page I created back in the Dark Ages of Wikipedia. If you have any good sources or ideas what to do about the page, I'd be happy to hear them (but I probably won't work on it in the next couple of months). —Kusma (talk) 10:20, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- I didn't know that you made that, but agree about improvements welcome, including a move. Saint Thomas is rather not a Protestant focus ;) - I just made a specific corner on my talk for the music around Pentecost and before, - a concert filmed, that's a first! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:28, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- The original page title, Thomaskirche, still redirects there :) I haven't paid enough attention to know what our current naming conventions for churches are like. —Kusma (talk) 10:51, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- I use the redirect often. I was asked recently, - and the discussion about moving Thomanerchor (still on the talk, 2010) was interesting. (It was moved, but only for a few hours.) Thomaskantor was not debated, afaik, so - regardless of conventions in general - in this specific case I'd go for consistency. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:17, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- It is currently more consistent with St. Peter, Leipzig (one of your many Leipzig church articles). If the page ends up at "Thomaskirche", I would also like to see Nikolaikirche (after all, it is just a few minutes from the site of the Paulinerkirche). I haven't been to Leipzig for too long. —Kusma (talk) 15:29, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Agree, with all. 2008, with Chor St. Martin, listening to Motette and Sunday service in the Thomaskirche, and seeing the instruments' museum, where Schumann and Mendelssohn lived, and the new buildings of the Forum Thomanum under construction. This year's trip will be to Aachen. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:50, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Collaboration?
Would you be interested in working on a French icon of debauchery with me? In the name of transparency, it must be finished this month and it is really hard for me who doesn't speak French to know how to search so that my subject is separated from the fashion designer of the same name. If you aren't interested, or don't have time, no worries. SusunW (talk) 20:11, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- @SusunW, that is an interesting challenge, but it seems Choquette did a fairly thorough job. I can have a look at her French sources and see if I think there is a chance that there is anything else to say (or at least to corroborate what she says). I'll finish responding to a GA review and then see what I can do. —Kusma (talk) 21:48, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- Yay! Thank you SusunW (talk) 21:54, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- I think I have scraped everything I possibly can from Choquette, even down to the footnotes. There is another source with sigcov, but as it seems to be totally based on Choquette, I didn't use it. As is my usual wont, things that don't make sense or that were too my French for my brain to handle, I have noted. If you can do anything with it, I'd appreciate it. SusunW (talk) 19:36, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
- @SusunW, I'll try my best, but it seems Choquette was rather thorough. I added another source (Davray) describing the bar (according to an earlier Choquette article; no idea why she says nothing about him in the other one) and will go through your notes later. —Kusma (talk) 20:24, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
- Cool. I'll try to find time to look again tomorrow. Thanks for the sources. I tried to search in gallica, but it is very slow going and most articles there seem to talk about the fashion designer. SusunW (talk) 20:55, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
- I replaced the 2012 version of Choquette's article with the 2002 version. Thanks. I so prefer page numbers if that is possible. I think I am down to 3 sources, all French. The first is on the page. The other 2 I have ordered from the RX and hopefully I'll have in a few days, if you can peruse them. Choquette only mentioned 250-252 in Carco, but I asked for 245-255. Seems weird that she would accept his version of Dumont's mill work and prostitution, but not his report of her first bar. But maybe it was just a matter of the fact that she couldn't find it. I'm going to ask Adam Cuerden to look at the images (other than the Spanish balcony). If we can glean anything from these 3 sources, I think we've covered what is out there. I really appreciate your help with her. SusunW (talk) 18:12, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
- Actually, it seems that the book isn't by Carco, but by Yaki, with a preface by Carco? What do you mean by not accepting the report of her first bar (or are you talking about Davray)? —Kusma (talk) 20:59, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
- Different book. The one Choquette cites is this one (1938, not 1933) and full text is supposedly available, but I can't figure it out. I get the impression she didn't accept his report of an earlier bar near the opera because it only appears in her footnotes, she doesn't actually discuss it in the body. Sorry, going to be gone for 2-3 hours to the lab, etc. SusunW (talk) 21:28, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
- Right. The titles were so similar ... —Kusma (talk) 21:33, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
- Got and sent you Carco. SusunW (talk) 13:45, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you! It is a slightly questionable source, so I see why Choquette is careful not to just believe what he says without attribution. He seems to be the only one who claims that Oscar Wilde went to La Souris to meet some pretty boy, a story Choquette omits, but she does mention Jean Lorrain, and I think he would be worth including. Up to you whether to use the story about Wilde (the other juicy namedropping you didn't do is the question whether the "S.B." ring found after her death belonged to Sarah Bernhardt). —Kusma (talk) 15:18, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
- Since I cannot read it, I am relying on your expertise. I am most interested in what he says about the first bar, but will let you decide if there is anything else that is pertinent. Please feel free to add whatever you think is relevant from any of the sources. I am no expert on actors, art, literature, or music, so often the significance of cultural figures escapes me. Even when I know who they are, like Bernhardt, I am never sure if it will seem like name-dropping or gossip to include others the subject interacted with. I try to avoid anything that would allow someone to imply "inherited notability", because it is so often tossed at articles on women. I do appreciate you. SusunW (talk) 18:01, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
- Added a bit (and fixed some things around the menu; feel free to remove the picture again if you think it isn't useful). I think the Oscar Wilde bit in Carco is a rumour from before his time, so it is better not to include it. —Kusma (talk) 21:35, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, I just noticed. Looks good. I may move the menu down to the bottom in legacy, just so all the photos aren't at the top, but we'll see. Thank you so much. I'm going to ask Adam Cuerden if he can work on the sketch of her playing cards. There are two on commons, but neither is ideal and I want the words off of the colored one of Bouboule if that's possible. SusunW (talk) 21:49, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

- Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
- As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.
- Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.
- The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.
- Following a community referendum, the arbitration policy has been modified to remove the ability for users to appeal remedies to Jimbo Wales.

Alexandrina Onslow
aka Alexandrina Marie/Maria Onslow, Alexandra Onslow. Born 27 January 1868 in Wales; died 2 February 1950 (ancestry probate record). Supposedly there is an obit in the Times, but I have no access to that. This is blocked to me, but perhaps you can see it? She was a driver from 1914-1917 for various medical ambulance services, got some medals. She was the partner of Nasta Rojc. Weird thing is other than census records, I find diddly squat about her until 1914, when she was 46. That seems totally weird. Any chance there is stuff on your side of the pond? SusunW (talk) 22:17, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- @SusunW, I found very little. Do you have this photograph yet? (Also here). The archive site doesn't show me anything more either and I don't believe in a Times obit right now (searched The Times for "onslow 1950" and only got people getting married or dying in a place called Onslow something; do you have suggestions for better search terms?). Found a claim that Rojc got divorced in 1925, [3]. There are a few things (starting in 1914) catalogued in the National Archives, [4], apparently held in London School of Economics, The Women's Library, but I haven't been able to find out more. Will try some more newspapers tomorrow, but I'm not very hopeful. —Kusma (talk) 23:03, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for those. The claim of divorce is interesting. The dude who lives in her house and another source both say they remained married. I'll run through these items tomorrow. I've posted a query on George's page about images. I think I can use them for photos she took and her paintings, but I'm not sure. If we can't find stuff on Onslow, we can't. No worries. I just know I am perpetually blocked from British sites, so I thought it might be that. I appreciate you taking the time to look. SusunW (talk) 23:12, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- I certainly don't know, but I also note a bunch of discrepancies in the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon with all the other sources. It says they married in 1909, others say in 1910. It says she met Onslow in Britain in 1923, but because she appears in the 1918-1919 autobiography, began living with Rojc in 1923 in Zagreb and didn't go to Britain until 1924, the chronology seems wrong. Says they divorced in 1925 when Rojc and Onslow returned to Zagreb, but they didn't return until late 1926, so that seems entirely improbable. I think the best bet is to put it in a footnote, explaining the discrepancies. SusunW (talk) 14:57, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- It is so frustrating how often tertiary sources get things wrong. —Kusma (talk) 15:07, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- Perhaps they had access to Branko's family's version of events? I didn't use that because no sourcing to support the primary record and I found nada to support a divorce. SusunW (talk) 15:22, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- Both parents died by 1881, raised by her aunt, Udea Onslow (weird that her dad is sort of crossed out), Udea died in 1883, her husband Astley Thompson died in 1887 and rest of the family moved to Australia. obit 15 Feb 1950?, what the heck is this boarding school? None of this requires you to do anything, just pondering out loud. Explains why there aren't more records, she was orphaned at 13 and then her guardians died by the time she was 19. SusunW (talk) 16:44, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- The school is the "Crofton Grange School", no longer in the same location. —Kusma (talk) 18:47, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- Run by Mary Alice Lyster – the irony... SusunW (talk) 19:40, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- Why is this ironic? Anyway, let's recap. Onslow is in the boarding school in 1911, doing nothing much according to the census, then in 1914 the school serves as a hospital for a week [5] (no idea if Onslow is still there). She joins the SWH at some point.
- another picture history of the SWH (terrible scan, at least two mentions of Onslow: in 1916 she is in Tulcea, in 1917 in Odessa). Onslow later had a yacht and knew Oskar Kokoschka? Lots of mysteries, but searching for "Miss Onslow" together with the SWH or some of their staff seems helpful. —Kusma (talk) 20:46, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- Ironic because I am looking for a lesbian and the lady she was living with, Mary Alice Lyster's name is very similar to Britain's "most famous" 19th century lesbian Anne Lister. We might come up with enough for a bio after all. SusunW (talk) 21:27, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

Hello Kusma, where were you able to locate the higher resolution colour version of the Portrait of Alexander Buchan you have and where is it possible to get a copy of the colour portrait?
Thank you, 2001:56A:7434:2D00:E933:A309:1400:CB9A (talk) 02:58, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
- Private email without attribution (and my correspondent did not know where the portrait is now). I don't think it is published anywhere in colour, but I hope I'm wrong. —Kusma (talk) 22:02, 25 June 2023 (UTC)
